Fully pseudospectral solution of the conformally invariant wave equation near the cylinder at spacelike infinity. III: Nonspherical Schwarzschild waves and singularities at null infinity

We extend earlier numerical and analytical considerations of the conformally invariant wave equation on a Schwarzschild background from the case of spherically symmetric solutions, discussed in Class. Quantum Grav. 34, 045005 (2017), to the case of general, nonsymmetric solutions. A key element of our approach is the modern standard representation of spacelike infinity as a cylinder. With a decomposition into spherical harmonics, we reduce the four-dimensional wave equation to a family of two-dimensional equations. These equations can be used to study the behaviour at the cylinder, where the solutions turn out to have logarithmic singularities at infinitely many orders. We derive regularity conditions that may be imposed on the initial data, in order to avoid the first singular terms. We then demonstrate that the fully pseudospectral time evolution scheme can be applied to this problem leading to a highly accurate numerical reconstruction of the nonsymmetric solutions. We are particularly interested in the behaviour of the solutions at future null infinity, and we numerically show that the singularities spread from the cylinder to null infinity. The observed numerical behaviour is consistent with similar logarithmic singularities found analytically on the cylinder. Finally, we demonstrate that even solutions with singularities at low orders can be obtained with high accuracy by virtue of a coordinate transformation that converts functions with logarithmic singularities into smooth solutions.

Asymptotics of solutions of a hyperbolic formulation of the constraint equations

In this paper we consider the hyperbolic formulation of the constraints introduced by Rácz. Using the numerical framework recently developed by us we construct initial data sets which can be interpreted as nonlinear perturbations of Schwarzschild data in Kerr-Schild coordinates and investigate their asymptotics. Our results suggest that, unless one finds a way to exploit the freedom to pick the free part of the initial data in some suitable way, generic initial data sets obtained by this method may violate fundamental asymptotic conditions.

The numerical initial boundary value problem for the generalized conformal field equations

In this paper we study a numerical implementation for the initial boundary value formulation for the generalized conformal field equations. We propose a formulation which is well suited for the study of the long-time behaviour of perturbed exact solutions such as a Schwarzschild or even a Kerr black hole. We describe the derivation of the implemented equations which we give in terms of the space-spinor formalism. We discuss the conformal Gauss gauge, and a slight generalization thereof which seems to be particularly useful in the presence of boundaries. We discuss the structure of the equations at the boundary and propose a method for imposing boundary conditions which allow the correct number of degrees of freedom to be freely specified while still preserving the constraints. We show that this implementation yields a numerically well-posed system by testing it on a simple case of gravitational perturbations of Minkowski space-time and subsequently with gravitational perturbations of Schwarzschild space-time.

Criticality of inhomogeneous Nariai-like cosmological models

In this paper, we construct and study solutions of Einstein's equations in vacuum with a positive cosmological constant which can be considered as inhomogeneous generalizations of the Nariai cosmological model. Similar to this Nariai spacetime, our solutions are at the borderline between gravitational collapse and de-Sitter-like exponential expansion. Our studies focus in particular on the intriguing oscillatory dynamics which we discover. Our investigations are carried out both analytically (using heuristic mode analysis arguments) and numerically (using the numerical infrastructure recently introduced by us).

Fully pseudospectral solution of the conformally invariant wave equation near the cylinder at spacelike infinity. II: Schwarzschild background

It has recently been demonstrated (Class. Quantum Grav. 31, 085010, 2014) that the conformally invariant wave equation on a Minkowski background can be solved with a fully pseudospectral numerical method. In particular, it is possible to include spacelike infinity into the numerical domain, which is appropriately represented as a cylinder, and highly accurate numerical solutions can be obtained with a moderate number of gridpoints. In this paper, we generalise these considerations to the spherically-symmetric wave equation on a Schwarzschild background. In the Minkowski case, a logarithmic singularity at the future boundary is present at leading order, which can easily be removed to obtain completely regular solutions. An important new feature of the Schwarzschild background is that the corresponding solutions develop logarithmic singularities at infinitely many orders. This behaviour seems to be characteristic for massive space-times. In this sense this work is indicative of properties of the solutions of the Einstein equations near spatial infinity. The use of fully pseudospectral methods allows us to still obtain very accurate numerical solutions, and the convergence properties of the spectral approximations reveal details about the singular nature of the solutions on spacelike and null infinity. These results seem to be impossible to achieve with other current numerical methods. Moreover, we describe how to impose conditions on the asymptotic behaviour of initial data so that the leading-order logarithmic terms are avoided, which further improves the numerical accuracy.

Global simulations of Minkowski space-time including space-like infinity

In this work, we study linearised gravitational fields on the entire Minkowski space-time including space-like infinity. The generalised conformal field equations linearised about a Minkowski background are utilised for this purpose. In principle, this conformal representation of Einstein's equations can be used to carry out global simulations of Minkowski space-time. We investigate thoroughly this possibility.

Numerical solutions of Einstein's equations for cosmological spacetimes with spatial topology S3 and symmetry group U(1)

In this paper we consider the single patch pseudo-spectral scheme for tensorial and spinorial evolution problems on the 2-sphere presented in [3,4] which is based on the spin-weighted spherical harmonics transform. We apply and extend this method to Einstein's equations and certain classes of spherical cosmological spacetimes. More specifically, we use the hyperbolic reductions of Einstein's equations obtained in the generalized wave map gauge formalism combined with Geroch's symmetry reduction, and focus on cosmological spacetimes with spatial S3-topologies and symmetry groups U(1) or U(1) x U(1). We discuss analytical and numerical issues related to our implementation. We test our code by reproducing the exact inhomogeneous cosmological solutions of the vacuum Einstein field equations obtained in [7].

Numerical evolution of plane gravitational waves in the Friedrich-Nagy gauge

The first proof of well-posedness of an initial boundary value problem for the Einstein equations was given in 1999 by Friedrich and Nagy. They used a frame formalism with a particular gauge for formulating the equations. This `Friedrich-Nagy' (FN) gauge has never been implemented for use in numerical simulations before because it was deemed too complicated. In this paper we present an implementation of the FN gauge for systems with two commuting space-like Killing vectors. We investigate the numerical performance of this formulation for plane wave space-times, reproducing the well-known Khan-Penrose solution for colliding impulsive plane waves and exhibiting a gravitational wave `ping-pong'.

Fully pseudospectral solution of the conformally invariant wave equation near the cylinder at spacelike infinity

We study the scalar, conformally invariant wave equation on a four-dimensional Minkowski background in spherical symmetry, using a fully pseudospectral numerical scheme. Thereby, our main interest is in a suitable treatment of spatial infinity, which is represented as a cylinder. We consider both Cauchy problems, where we evolve data from a Cauchy surface to future null infinity, as well as characteristic initial value problems with data at past null infinity, and demonstrate that highly accurate numerical solutions can be obtained for a small number of grid points.

Numerical evolutions of fields on the 2-sphere using a spectral method based on spin-weighted spherical harmonics

Many applications in science call for the numerical simulation of systems on manifolds with spherical topology. Through use of integer spin weighted spherical harmonics we present a method which allows for the implementation of arbitrary tensorial evolution equations. Our method combines two numerical techniques that were originally developed with different applications in mind. The first is Huffenberger and Wandelt's spectral decomposition algorithm to perform the mapping from physical to spectral space. The second is the application of Luscombe and Luban's method, to convert numerically divergent linear recursions into stable nonlinear recursions, to the calculation of reduced Wigner d-functions. We give a detailed discussion of the theory and numerical implementation of our algorithm. The properties of our method are investigated by solving the scalar and vectorial advection equation on the sphere, as well as the 2+1 Maxwell equations on a deformed sphere.

Linearized gravitational waves near space-like and null infinity

Linear perturbations on Minkowski space are used to probe numerically the remote region of an asymptotically flat space-time close to spatial infinity. The study is undertaken within the framework of Friedrich's conformal field equations and the corresponding conformal representation of spatial infinity as a cylinder. The system under consideration is the (linear) zero-rest-mass equation for a spin-2 field. The spherical symmetry of the underlying background is used to decompose the field into separate non-interacting multipoles. It is demonstrated that it is possible to reach null-infinity from initial data on an asymptotically Euclidean hyper-surface and that the physically important radiation field can be extracted accurately on $\scri^+$.

Charged particles constrained to a curved surface

We study the motion of charged particles constrained to arbitrary two-dimensional curved surfaces but interacting in three-dimensional space via the Coulomb potential. To speed-up the interaction calculations, we use the parallel compute capability of the Compute Unified Device Architecture (CUDA) of todays graphics boards. The particles and the curved surfaces are shown using the Open Graphics Library (OpenGL). The paper is intended to give graduate students, who have basic experiences with electrostatics and differential geometry, a deeper understanding in charged particle interactions and a short introduction how to handle a many particle system using parallel computing on a single home computer

Numerical space-times near space-like and null infinity. The spin-2 system on Minkowski space

In this paper we demonstrate for the first time that it is possible to solve numerically the Cauchy problem for the linearisation of the general conformal field equations near spacelike infinity, which is only well-defined in Friedrich's cylinder picture. We have restricted ourselves here to the "core" of the equations - the spin-2 system - propagating on Minkowski space. We compute the numerical solutions for various classes of initial data, do convergence tests and also compare to exact solutions. We also choose initial data which intentionally violate the smoothness conditions and then check the analytical predictions about singularities. This paper is the first step in a long-term investigation of the use of conformal methods in numerical relativity.

Interactive visualization of a thin disc around a Schwarzschild black hole

In the first course of general relativity, the Schwarzschild spacetime is the most discussed analytic solution to Einstein's field equations. Unfortunately, there is rarely enough time to study the optical consequences of the bending of light for some advanced examples. In this paper, we present how the visual appearance of a thin disc around a Schwarzschild black hole can be determined interactively by means of an analytic solution to the geodesic equation processed on current high performance graphical processing units. This approach can, in principle, be customized for any other thin disc in a spacetime with geodesics given in closed form. The interactive visualization discussed here can be used either in a first course of general relativity for demonstration purposes only or as a thesis for an enthusiastic student in an advanced course with some basic knowledge of OpenGL and a programming language.

Blow-up of the non-equivariant 2+1 dimensional wave map

It has been known for a long time that the equivariant 2+1 wave map into the 2-sphere blows up if the initial data are chosen appropriately. Here, we present numerical evidence for the stability of the blow-up phenomenon under explicit violations of equivariance.

Free Versus Constrained Evolution of the 2+1 Equivariant Wave Map

We compare the numerical solutions of the 2+1 equivariant Wave Map problem computed with the symplectic, constraint respecting Rattle algorithm and the well known fourth order Runge-Kutta method. We show the advantages of the Rattle algorithm for constrained system compared to the free evolution with the Runge-Kutta method. We also present an expression, which represents the energy loss due to constraint violation. Taking this expression into account we can achieve energy conservation for the Runge-Kutta scheme, which is better than with the Rattle method. Using the symplectic scheme with constraint enforcement we can reproduce previous calculations of the equivariant case without imposing the symmetry explicitly, thereby confirming that the critical behaviour is stable.

A note on the post-Newtonian limit of quasi-local energy expressions

An `effective' quasi-local energy expression, motivated by the (relativistically corrected) Newtonian theory, is introduced in exact GR as the volume integral of all the source terms in the field equation for the Newtonian potential in static spacetimes. In particular, we exhibit a new post-Newtonian correction in the source term in the field equation for the Newtonian gravitational potential. In asymptotically flat spacetimes this expression tends to the ADM energy at the spatial infinity as a {\em monotonically decreasing} set function. We prove its positivity in spherically symmetric spacetimes under certain energy conditions, and that its vanishing characterizes flatness. We argue that any physically acceptable quasi-local energy expression should behave qualitatively like this `effective' energy expression in this limit.
