Witten spinors on maximal, conformally flat hypersurfaces

The boundary conditions that exclude zeros of the solutions of the Witten equation (and hence guarantee the existence of a 3-frame satisfying the so-called special orthonormal frame gauge conditions) are investigated. We determine the general form of the conformally invariant boundary conditions for the Witten equation, and find the boundary conditions that characterize the constant and the conformally constant spinor fields among the solutions of the Witten equations on compact domains in extrinsically and intrinsically flat, and on maximal, intrinsically globally conformally flat spacelike hypersurfaces, respectively. We also provide a number of exact solutions of the Witten equation with various boundary conditions (both at infinity and on inner or outer boundaries) that single out nowhere vanishing spinor fields on the flat, non-extreme Reissner--Nordström and Brill--Lindquist data sets. Our examples show that there is an interplay between the boundary conditions, the global topology of the hypersurface and the existence/non-existence of zeros of the solutions of the Witten equation.

Studying null and time-like geodesics in the classroom

In a first course of general relativity it is usually quite difficult for students to grasp the concept of a geodesic. It is supposed to be straight (auto-parallel) and yet it 'looks' curved. In these situations it is very useful to have some explicit examples available which show the different behaviour of geodesics. In this paper we present the GeodesicViewer, an interactive tool for studying the behaviour of geodesics in many different space-times. The geodesics can be represented in several ways, depending on the space-time in question. The use of a local reference frame and 'Cartesian-like' coordinates helps the students to develop some intuition in various situations. We present the various features of the GeodesicViewer in the form of readily formulated exercises for the students.

Generalized Transformation Optics of Linear Materials

We continue the development of a manifestly 4-dimensional, completely covariant, approach to transformation optics in linear dielectric materials begun in a previous paper. This approach, which generalizes the Plebanski based approach, is systematically applicable for all transformations and all general linear materials. Importantly, it enables useful applications such as arbitrary relative motion, transformations from arbitrary non-vacuum initial dielectric media, and arbitrary space-times. This approach is demonstrated for a resulting material that moves with uniform linear velocity. The inverse problem of this covariant approach is shown to generalize Gordon's "optical metric".

Dielectric Analog Space-Times

We generalize the notion of a dielectric analog Schwarzschild black hole model to analog models of arbitrary space-times; in particular, the approach is not restricted to static space-times. This is done by establishing a correspondence between electrodynamics on a curved, vacuum manifold, with electrodynamics in a general linear dielectric residing in Minkowski space-time. The mapping is not unique, allowing for some freedom in the specification of equivalent materials, which could be useful for exploiting recent developments in the production of metamaterials. Some examples are considered, with special attention paid to the dielectric analog of the exterior Kerr geometry, which is found to be reproducible with regular, linear, dielectrics.

A Completely Covariant Approach to Transformation Optics

We show that the Plebanski based approach to transformation optics overlooks some subtleties in the electrodynamics of moving dielectrics that restricts its applicability to a certain class of transformations. An alternative, completely covariant, approach is developed that is more generally applicable and provides a clearer picture of transformation optics.

Discrete differential forms for cosmological space-times

In this article we describe applications of the numerical method of discrete differential forms in computational GR. In particular we consider the initial value problem for vacuum space-times that admit plane gravitational waves. As described in an earlier paper the discrete differential form approach can provide accurate results in spherically symmetric space-times. Moreover it is manifestly coordinate independent. Here we use the polarised Gowdy solution as a testbed for two numerical schemes. One scheme reproduces that solution very well, in particular it is stable for a comparatively long time and converges quadratically.

Application of Discrete Differential Forms to Spherically Symmetric Systems in General Relativity

In this article we describe applications of Discrete Differential Forms in computational GR. In particular we consider the initial value problem in vacuum space-times that are spherically symmetric. The motivation to investigate this method is mainly its manifest coordinate independence. Three numerical schemes are introduced, the results of which are compared with the corresponding analytic solutions. The error of two schemes converges quadratically to zero. For one scheme the errors depend strongly on the initial data.

Algebraic stability analysis of constraint propagation

The divergence of the constraint quantities is a major problem in computational gravity today. Apparently, there are two sources for constraint violations. The use of boundary conditions which are not compatible with the constraint equations inadvertently leads to 'constraint violating modes' propagating into the computational domain from the boundary. The other source for constraint violation is intrinsic. It is already present in the initial value problem, i.e. even when no boundary conditions have to be specified. Its origin is due to the instability of the constraint surface in the phase space of initial conditions for the time evolution equations. In this paper, we present a technique to study in detail how this instability depends on gauge parameters. We demonstrate this for the influence of the choice of the time foliation in context of the Weyl system. This system is the essential hyperbolic part in various formulations of the Einstein equations.

Calculating initial data for the conformal Einstein equations by pseudo-spectral methods

We present a numerical scheme for determining hyperboloidal initial data sets for the conformal field equations by using pseudo-spectral methods. This problem is split into two parts. The first step is the determination of a suitable conformal factor which transforms from an initial data set in physical space-time to a hyperboloidal hypersurface in the ambient conformal manifold. This is achieved by solving the Yamabe equation, a non-linear second order equation. The second step is a division by the conformal factor of certain fields which vanish on $\scri$, the zero set of the conformal factor. The challenge there is to numerically obtain a smooth quotient. Both parts are treated by pseudo-spectral methods. The non-linear equation is solved iteratively while the division problem is treated by transforming the problem to the coefficient space, solving it there by the QR-factorisation of a suitable matrix, and then transforming back. These hyperboloidal initial data can be used to generate general relativistic space-times by evolution with the conformal field equations.

On a class of consistent linear higher spin equations on curved manifolds

We analyze a class of linear wave equations for odd half spin that have a well posed initial value problem. We demonstrate consistency of the equations in curved space-times. They generalize the Weyl neutrino equation. We show that there exists an associated invariant exact set of spinor fields indicating that the characteristic initial value problem on a null cone is formally solvable, even for the system coupled to general relativity. We derive the general analytic solution in flat space by means of Fourier transforms. Finally, we present a twistor contour integral description for the general analytic solution and assemble a representation of the group $O(4,4)$ on the solution space.
