Quasinormal modes and self-adjoint extensions of the Schroedinger operator

We revisit here the analytical continuation approach usually employed to compute quasinormal modes (QNM) and frequencies of a given potential barrier $V$ starting from the bounded states and respective eigenvalues of the Schroedinger operator associated with the potential well corresponding to the inverted potential $-V$. We consider an exactly soluble problem corresponding to a potential barrier of the Poschl-Teller type with a well defined and behaved QNM spectrum, but for which the associated Schroedinger operator $\cal H$ obtained by analytical continuation fails to be self-adjoint. Although $\cal H$ admits self-adjoint extensions, we show that the eigenstates corresponding to the analytically continued QNM do not belong to any self-adjoint extension domain and, consequently, they cannot be interpreted as authentic quantum mechanical bounded states. Our result challenges the practical use of the this type of method when $\cal H$ fails to be self-adjoint since, in such cases, we would not have in advance any reasonable criterion to choose the initial eigenstates of $\cal H$ which would correspond to the analytically continued QNM.

Primordial universe with the running cosmological constant

Theoretically, the running of the cosmological constant in the IR region is not ruled out. On the other hand, from the QFT viewpoint, the energy released due to the variation of the cosmological constant in the late universe cannot go to the matter sector. For this reason, the phenomenological bounds on such a running are not sufficiently restrictive. The situation can be different in the early universe when the gravitational field was sufficiently strong to provide an efficient creation of particles from the vacuum. We develop a framework for systematically exploring this ossibility. It is supposed that the running occurs in the epoch when the Dark Matter already decoupled and is expanding adiabatically, while baryons are approximately massless and can be abundantly created from vacuum due to the decay of vacuum energy. By using the handy model of Reduced Relativistic Gas for describing the Dark Matter, we consider the dynamics of both cosmic background and linear perturbations and evaluate the impact of the vacuum decay on the matter power spectrum and to the first CMB peak. Additionally, using the combined data of CMB+BAO+SNIa we find the best fit values for the free parameters of our model.

The growth factor parametrization versus numerical solutions in flat and non-flat dark energy models

In the present investigation we use observational data of $ f σ_ {8} $ to determine observational constraints in the plane $(Ω_{m0},σ_{8})$ using two different methods: the growth factor parametrization and the numerical solutions method for density contrast, $δ_{m}$. We verified the correspondence between both methods for three models of accelerated expansion: the $ΛCDM$ model, the $ w_{0}w_{a} CDM$ model and the running cosmological constant $RCC$ model. In all case we consider also curvature as free parameter. The study of this correspondence is important because the growth factor parametrization method is frequently used to discriminate between competitive models. Our results we allow us to determine that there is a good correspondence between the observational constrains using both methods. We also test the power of the $ fσ_ {8} $ data to constraints the curvature parameter within the $ ΛCDM $ model. For this we use a non-parametric reconstruction using Gaussian processes. Our results show that the $ fσ_ {8}$ data with the current precision level does not allow to distinguish between a flat and non-flat universe.

Constraints from observational data for a running cosmological constant and warm dark matter with curvature

It is known than the inclusion of spatial curvature can modify the evolution of matter perturbations and affect the Large Scale Structure (LSS) formation. We quantify the effects of the non-zero space curvature in terms of LSS formation for a cosmological model with a running vacuum energy density and a warm dark matter component. The evolution of density perturbations and the modified shape of its power spectrum are constructed and analyzed.

Rastall's theory of gravity: Spherically symmetric solutions and the stability problem

We study the stability of static, spherically symmetric solutions of Rastall's theory in the presence of a scalar field with respect to spherically symmetric perturbations. It is shown that the stability analysis is inconsistent in the sense that linear time-dependent perturbations cannot exist, and we can conclude that these solutions are stable. Possible reasons for this inconsistency are discussed.

An infinite square-well potential as a limiting case of a finite square-well potential in a minimal-length scenario

One of the most widely problem studied in quantum mechanics is of an infinite square-well potential. In a minimal-length scenario its study requires additional care because the boundary conditions at the walls of the well are not well fixed. In order to avoid this we solve the finite square-well potential whose the boundary conditions are well fixed, even in a minimal-length scenario, and then we take the limit of the potential going to infinity to find the eigenfunctions and the energy equation for the infinite square-well potential. Although the first correction for the energy eigenvalues is the same one has been found in the literature, our result shows that the eigenfunctions have the first derivative continuous at the square-well walls what is in disagreement those previous work. That is because in the literature the authors have neglected the hyperbolic solutions and have assumed the discontinuity of the first derivative of the eigenfunctions at the walls of the infinite square-well which is not correct. As we show, the continuity of the first derivative of the eigenfunctions at the square-well walls guarantees the continuity of the probability current density and the unitarity of the time evolution

Vector perturbations in bouncing cosmology

An old question surrounding bouncing models concerns their stability under vector perturbations. Considering perfect fluids or scalar fields, vector perturbations evolve kinematically as $a^{-2}$, where $a$ is the scale factor. Consequently, a definite answer concerning the bounce stability depends on an arbitrary constant, therefore, there is no definitive answer. In this paper, we consider a more general situation where the primeval material medium is a non-ideal fluid, and its shear viscosity is capable of producing torque oscillations, which can create and dynamically sustain vector perturbations along cosmic evolution. In this framework, one can set that vector perturbations have a quantum mechanical origin, coming from quantum vacuum fluctuations in the far past of the bouncing model, as it is done with scalar and tensor perturbations. Under this prescription, one can calculate their evolution during the whole history of the bouncing model, and precisely infer the conditions under which they remain linear before the expanding phase. It is shown that such linearity conditions impose constraints on the free parameters of bouncing models, which are mild, although not trivial, allowing a large class of possibilities. Such conditions impose that vector perturbations are also not observationally relevant in the expanding phase. The conclusion is that bouncing models are generally stable under vector perturbations. As they are also stable under scalar and tensor perturbations, we conclude that bouncing models are generally stable under perturbations originated from quantum vacuum perturbations in the far past of their contracting phase.

Multidimensional gravity with higher derivatives and inflation

We elaborate on the inflationary model starting from multidimensional Lagrangian and gravity with second-order curvature terms. The effective scalar field is related to the Ricci scalar of extra dimensions. It is shown that the Kretschmann and the Ricci tensor square terms dominate during inflation. The observable values of the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are obtained for specific values of the model parameters.

Generic slow-roll and non-gaussianity parameters in $f(R)$ theories

In this paper we establish \textit{formulae} for the inflationary slow-roll parameters $ε$, $η$ and $ζ$ as functions of the Ricci scalar $R$ for $f(R)$ theories of gravity. As examples, we present the analytic and numerical solutions of $ε$, $η$ and $ζ$ as functions of the number of e-folds $N$ in two important instances: for the Starobinsky model and for a $f(R)$ reconstruction of the $α$-Attractors. The highlight of our proposal is to rewrite the slow-roll parameters in terms of $f(R)$, which allows to find directly $n_{\rm s}$, $r$, $α_{\rm s}$ and $f^{\text{equil}}_{\text{NL}}$ as functions of $R$ itself. We obtain that both models indicate a small contribution to the non-Gaussianity parameters, which are in good agreement with current observational constraints.

Quasi-normal modes of black holes and naked singularities: revisiting the WKB method

In this paper we revisit the analysis of the ringdown frequencies in the form of quasi-normal modes for Schwarzschild,Schwarzschild de-Sitter and Reissner-Nordström space-times. We plot these frequencies, using the third-order WKB semi-analytical method against the mass, charge and cosmological constant for each corresponding space-time for various different spin-fields. We verify the stability of each black hole solution, including the extremal Reissner-Nordström space-time. Finally, we discover four different traits for the Schwarzschild de-Sitter space-time: i) the frequencies vanish in the extremal case; ii) the frequencies swap behavior before and after the extremal value; iii) indication that the naked singularity is stable for positive mass; iv) for the naked singularity case, there exists a cut-off mass in the scalar-field perturbation which depends only on the multipole number $\ell$.

Some effects of non-conservative gravity on cosmic string configurations

We investigate some consequences of a specific non-conservation of the energy-momentum tensor on the physics of certain cosmic string configurations. This non-conservation is induced by a new gravitational theory recently introduced as an attempt to incorporate dissipative systems in the gravity description. This model of gravity is endowed with a variational principle, where an action-dependence on the geometric sector is assumed. For the Abelian-Higgs string we derive the dynamical equations and provide the numerical solutions describing the behavior of the Higgs and gauge fields as well as the profile of the metric functions for different cases of the parameter that characterises the model. Additionally, from this numerical approach we find how the inner structure of the cosmic string is affected by this underlying gravitational theory, by analyzing the deviations both on the mass per unit length and the deficit angle of the string. Next, we proceed with an analytical treatment obtaining the solution close to the string axis and also the corresponding vacuum solution. Our analytical results are also complemented with the study of a thick cosmic string model, where the defect is endowed with finite core. In this case we have obtained the proper interior solution which joined together with the vacuum metric outside provides an exact solution for the exterior geometry which generalizes previous results and leads to a decreasing of the mass per unit length of the cosmic string.

Cosmology from a new non-conservative gravity

In this paper we present a cosmological model arising from a non-conservative gravitational theory proposed in [PRD 95, 101501(R) (2017)]. The novel feature where comparing with previous implementations of dissipative effects in gravity is the possible arising of such phenomena from a least action principle, so they are of a purely geometric nature. We derive the dynamical equations describing the behaviour of the cosmic background, considering a single fluid model composed by pressureles matter, whereas the dark energy is conceived as an outcome of the "geometric" dissipative process emerging in the model. Besides, adopting the synchronous gauge we obtain the first-order perturbative equations which shall describe the evolution of the matter perturbations within the linear regime.

$f(R)$ global monopole revisited

In this paper the $f(R)$ global monopole is reexamined. We provide an exact solution for the modified field equations in the presence of a global monopole for regions outside its core, generalizing previous results. Additionally, we discuss some particular cases obtained from this solution. We consider a setup consisting of a possible Schwarzschild black hole that absorbs the topological defect, giving rise to a static black hole endowed with a monopole's charge. Besides, we demonstrate how the asymptotic behavior of the Higgs field far from the monopole's core is shaped by a class of spacetime metrics which includes those ones analyzed here. In order to assess the gravitational properties of this system, we analyse the geodesic motion of both massive and massless test particles moving in the vicinity of such configuration. For the material particles we set the requirements they have to obey in order to experience stable orbits. On the other hand, for the photons we investigate how their trajectories are affected by the gravitational field of this black hole.

An exponential correction to Starobinsky's inflationary model

We analyse $f(R)$ theories of gravity from a dynamical system perspective, showing how the $R^2$ correction in Starobinsky's model plays a crucial role from the viewpoint of the inflationary paradigm. Then, we propose a modification of Starobinsky's model by adding an exponential term in the $f(R)$ Lagrangian. We show how this modification could allow to test the robustness of the model by means of the predictions on the scalar spectral index $n_s$.

Scalar-tensor theories with an external scalar

Scalar-tensor (ST) gravity is considered in the case where the scalar is an external field. We show that General Relativity (GR) and usual ST gravity are particular cases of the External Scalar-Tensor (EST) gravity. It is shown with a particular cosmological example that it is possible to join a part of a GR solution to a part of a ST one such that the complete solution neither belongs to GR nor to ST, but fully satisfies the EST field equations. We argue that external fields may effectively work as a type of screening mechanism for ST theories.

On Black Hole Structures in Scalar-Tensor Theories of Gravity

We review some properties of black hole structures appearing in gravity with a massless scalar field, with both minimal and nonminimal coupling. The main properties of the resulting cold black holes are described. The study of black holes in scalar-gravity systems is extended to $k$-essence theories, and some examples are explicitly worked out. In these cases, even while the existence of horizons is possible, the metric regularity requirement on the horizon implies either a cold black type structure or a singular behavior of the scalar field.

New views on classical and quantum Brans-Dicke theory

The Brans-Dicke action is one of the most natural extensions of the Einstein-Hilbert action. It is based on the introduction of a fundamental scalar field that effectively incorporates a dynamics to the gravitational coupling $G$. In spite of the diverse motivations and the rich phenomenology that comes from its solutions, Solar System tests impose strong constraints on the Brans-Dicke theory, rendering it indistinguishable from General Relativity. In the present text, new perspectives for the Brans-Dicke theory are presented, based on the possibility that the scalar field presented in the BD theory can be external, as well as on the applications to black hole physics and the primordial universe.

The Brans-Dicke-Rastall theory

We formulate a theory combining the principles of a scalar-tensor gravity and Rastall's proposal of a violation of the usual conservation laws. We obtain a scalar-tensor theory with two parameters $ω$ and $λ$, the latter quantifying the violation of the usual conservation laws. The only exact spherically symmetric solution is that of Robinson-Bertotti besides Schwarzschild solution. A PPN analysis reveals that General Relativity results are reproduced when $λ= 0$. The cosmological case displays a possibility of deceleration/acceleration or acceleration/deceleration transitions during the matter dominated phase depending on the values of the free parameters.
