Full-Trace Modules

Motivated by the definition of nearly Gorenstein rings, we introduce the notion of full-trace modules over commutative Noetherian local rings--namely, finitely generated modules whose trace equals the maximal ideal. We investigate the existence of such modules and prove that, over rings that are neither regular nor principal ideal rings, every positive syzygy module of the residue field is full-trace. Moreover, over Cohen-Macaulay rings, we study full-trace Ulrich modules--that is, maximally generated maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules that are full-trace. We establish the following characterization: a non-regular Cohen-Macaulay local ring has minimal multiplicity if and only if it admits a full-trace Ulrich module. Finally, for numerical semigroup rings with minimal multiplicity, we show that each full-trace Ulrich module decomposes as the direct sum of the maximal ideal and a module that is either zero or Ulrich.

Homological properties of the module of differentials

These notes were produced by Jürgen Herzog to accompany his lectures in Recife, Brazil, in 1980, on the homological algebra of noetherian local rings. They are are concerned with two conjectures made by Wolmer Vasconcelos: if the conormal module of a local ring has finite projective dimension, or if the module of differentials, taken over an appropriate field, has finite projective dimension, then the ring must be complete intersection. The notes present an accessible and self-contained account of the strongest results known at the time in connection with these problems; this includes a number of ideas that have not appeared elsewhere. In the last section, Herzog turns his attention to the cotangent complex, and conjectures himself that if the cotangent complex of a local ring has bounded homology groups, then the ring must be complete intersection. Among other results, he proves that the conjecture holds for local rings of characteristic zero over which all modules have rational Poincaré series. Sadly Jürgen Herzog passed away in April of 2024. The notes in this form have been prepared in his memory, newly typeset and lightly edited. A short appendix has been added to survey some of the results of the intervening decades.

On the Rees algebra and the conductor of an ideal

For an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring $R$, we introduce and study its conductor as a tool to explore the Rees algebra of $I$. The conductor of $I$ is an ideal $C(I)\subset R$ obtained from the defining ideals of the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra of $I$ by a colon operation. Using this concept we investigate when adding an element to an ideal preserves the property of being of linear type. In this regard, a generalization of a result by Valla in terms of the conductor ideal is presented. When the conductor of a graded ideal in a polynomial ring is the graded maximal ideal, a criteria is given for when the Rees algebra and the symmetric algebra have the same Krull dimension. Finally, noting the fact that the conductor of a monomial ideal is a monomial ideal, the conductor of some families of monomial ideals, namely bounded Veronese ideals and edge ideals of graphs, are determined.

Binomial ideals attached to finite collections of cells

We consider the ideal of inner $2$-minors $I_{\mathcal{P}}$ of a finite set of cells $\mathcal{P}$, which we call the cell ideal of $\mathcal{P}$. A nice interpretation for the height of an unmixed ideal $I_{\mathcal{P}}$, in terms of the number of cells of $\mathcal{P}$ is given. Moreover, the coordinate rings of cell ideals with isolated singularities are determined.

The divisor class group of a discrete polymatroid

In this paper we introduce toric rings of multicomplexes. We show how to compute the divisor class group and the class of the canonical module when the toric ring is normal. In the special case that the multicomplex is a discrete polymatroid, its toric ring is studied deeply for several classes of polymatroids.

Ideals and their Fitting ideals

For an ideal $I$ in a Noetherian ring $R$, the Fitting ideals $\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)$ are studied. We discuss the question of when $\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)=I$ or $\sqrt{\textrm{Fitt}_j(I)}=\sqrt{I}$ for some $j$. A classical case is the Hilbert-Burch theorem when $j=1$ and $I$ is a perfect ideal of grade $2$ in a local ring.

Traces of semi-invariants

This article investigates the traces of certain modules over rings of invariants associated with finite groups. More precisely, we provide a formula for computing the traces of arbitrary semi-invariants, thereby contributing to the understanding of the non-Gorenstein locus of rings of invariants. Additionally, we discuss applications of this formula, including criteria for rings of invariants to be Gorenstein on the punctured spectrum and nearly Gorenstein, as well as criteria for semi-invariants to be locally free.

Toric rings attached to simplicial complexes

We consider standard graded toric rings $R_Δ$ whose generators correspond to the faces of a simplicial complex $Δ$. When $R_Δ$ is normal, it is shown that its divisor class group is free. For a flag complex $Δ$ which is the clique complex of a perfect graph, a nice description for the class group and the canonical module of $R_Δ$ in terms of the minimal vertex covers of the graph is given. Moreover, for a quasi-forest simplicial complex a quadratic Gröbner basis for the defining ideal of $R_Δ$ is presented. Using this fact we give combinatorial descriptions for the $a$-invariant and the Gorenstein property of $R_Δ$.

The eventual shape of the Betti table of $\mathfrak{m}^kM$

Let $S$ be the polynomial ring over a field $K$ in a finite set of variables, and let $ \mathfrak{m}$ be the graded maximal ideal of $S$. It is known that for a finitely generated graded $S$-module $M$ and all integers $k\gg 0$, the module $ \mathfrak{m}^kM$ is componentwise linear. For large $k$ we describe the pattern of the Betti table of $ \mathfrak{m}^kM$ when $\mathrm{char}(K)=0$ and $M$ is a submodule of a finitely generated graded free $S$-module. Moreover, we show that for any $k\gg 0$, $ \mathfrak{m}^kI$ has linear quotients if $I$ is a monomial ideal.

Rings of invariants for three dimensional modular representations

Let $p>3$ be a prime number. We compute the rings of invariants of the elementary abelian $p$-group $(\mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z)^r$ for $3$-dimensional generic representations. Furthermore we show that these rings of invariants are complete intersections rings with embedding dimension $\lceil r/2\rceil +3$. This proves a conjecture of Campbell, Shank and Wehlau in [CSW], which they proved for $r=3$, and later Pierron and Shank proved it for $r=4$.

The toric ring of one dimensional simplicial complexes

Let $Δ$ be a 1-dimensional simplicial complex. Then $Δ$ may be identified with a finite simple graph $G$. In this article, we investigate the toric ring $R_G$ of $G$. All graphs $G$ such that $R_G$ is a normal domain are classified. For such a graph, we determine the set $\mathcal{P}_G$ of height one monomial prime ideals of $R_G$. In the bipartite case, and in the case of whiskered cycles, this set is explicitly described. As a consequence, we determine the canonical class $[ω_{R_G}]$ and characterize the Gorenstein property of $R_G$. For a bipartite graph $G$, we show that $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed. For a subclass of non-bipartite graphs $G$, which includes whiskered cycles, $R_G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ is unmixed and has an odd number of vertices. Finally, it is proved that $R_G$ is a pseudo-Gorenstein ring if $G$ is an odd cycle.

Behaviour of the normalized depth function

Let $I\subset S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a squarefree monomial ideal, $K$ a field. The $k$th squarefree power $I^{[k]}$ of $I$ is the monomial ideal of $S$ generated by all squarefree monomials belonging to $I^k$. The biggest integer $k$ such that $I^{[k]}\ne(0)$ is called the monomial grade of $I$ and it is denoted by $ν(I)$. Let $d_k$ be the minimum degree of the monomials belonging to $I^{[k]}$. Then, $\text{depth}(S/I^{[k]})\ge d_k-1$ for all $1\le k\leν(I)$. The normalized depth function of $I$ is defined as $g_{I}(k)=\text{depth}(S/I^{[k]})-(d_k-1)$, $1\le k\leν(I)$. It is expected that $g_I(k)$ is a non-increasing function for any $I$. In this article we study the behaviour of $g_{I}(k)$ under various operations on monomial ideals. Our main result characterizes all cochordal graphs $G$ such that for the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ we have $g_{I(G)}(1)=0$. They are precisely all cochordal graphs $G$ whose complementary graph $G^c$ is connected and has a cut vertex. As a far-reaching application, for given integers $1\le s<m$ we construct a graph $G$ such that $ν(I(G))=m$ and $g_{I(G)}(k)=0$ if and only if $k=s+1,\dots,m$. Finally, we show that any non-increasing function of non-negative integers is the normalized depth function of some squarefree monomial ideal.

The canonical trace of determinantal rings

We compute the canonical trace of generic determinantal rings and provide a sufficient condition for the trace to specialize. As an application we determine the canonical trace $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ of a Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ of codimension two, which is generically Gorenstein. It is shown that if the defining ideal $I$ of $R$ is generated by $n$ elements, then $\mbox{tr}(ω_R)$ is generated by the $(n-2)$-minors of the Hilbert-Burch matrix of $I$.

Dirac's theorem and multigraded syzygies

Let $G$ be a simple finite graph. A famous theorem of Dirac says that $G$ is chordal if and only if $G$ admits a perfect elimination order. It is known by Fröberg that the edge ideal $I(G)$ of $G$ has a linear resolution if and only if the complementary graph $G^c$ of $G$ is chordal. In this article, we discuss some algebraic consequences of Dirac's theorem in the theory of homological shift ideals of edge ideals. Recall that if $I$ is a monomial ideal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is the monomial ideal generated by the $k$th multigraded shifts of $I$. We prove that $\mbox{HS}_1(I)$ has linear quotients, for any monomial ideal $I$ with linear quotients generated in a single degree. For and edge ideal $I(G)$ with linear quotients, it is not true that $\mbox{HS}_k(I(G))$ has linear quotients for all $k\ge0$. On the other hand, if $G^c$ is a proper interval graph or a forest, we prove that this is the case. Finally, we discuss a conjecture of Bandari, Bayati and Herzog that predicts that if $I$ is polymatroidal, $\mbox{HS}_k(I)$ is polymatroidal too, for all $k\ge0$. We are able to prove that this conjecture holds for all polymatroidal ideals generated in degree two.

Toric rings arising from vertex cover ideals

We extend the sortability concept to monomial ideals which are not necessarily generated in one degree and as an application we obtain normal Cohen-Macaulay toric rings attached to vertex cover ideals of graphs. Moreover, we consider a construction on a graph called a clique multi-whiskering which always produces vertex cover ideals with componentwise linear powers.
