The normalized depth function of squarefree powers

The depth of squarefree powers of a squarefree monomial ideal is introduced. Let $I$ be a squarefree monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$. The $k$-th squarefree power $I^{[k]}$ of $I$ is the ideal of $S$ generated by those squarefree monomials $u_1\cdots u_k$ with each $u_i\in G(I)$, where $G(I)$ is the unique minimal system of monomial generators of $I$. Let $d_k$ denote the minimum degree of monomials belonging to $G(I^{[k]})$. One has $\operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) \geq d_k -1$. Setting $g_I(k) = \operatorname{depth}(S/I^{[k]}) - (d_k - 1)$, one calls $g_I(k)$ the normalized depth function of $I$. The computational experience strongly invites us to propose the conjecture that the normalized depth function is nonincreasing. In the present paper, especially the normalized depth function of the edge ideal of a finite simple graph is deeply studied.

Some homological properties of Borel type ideals

We study ideals of Borel type, including $k$-Borel ideals and $t$-spread Veronese ideals. We determine their free resolutions and their homological shift ideals. The multiplicity and the analytic spread of equigenerated squarefree principal Borel ideals are computed. For the multiplicity, the result is given under an additional assumption which is always satisfied for squarefree principal Borel ideals. These results are used to analyze the behaviour of height, multiplicity and analytic spread of the homological shift ideals $HS_j(I)$ as functions of $j$, when $I$ is an equigenerated squarefree Borel ideal.

Rings of Teter type

Let $R$ be a Cohen--Macaulay local $K$-algebra or a standard graded $K$-algebra over a field $K$ with a canonical module $ω_R$. The trace of $ω_R$ is the ideal $tr(ω_R)$ of $R$ which is the sum of those ideals $φ(ω_R)$ with $φ\in Hom_R(ω_R,R)$. The smallest number $s$ for which there exist $φ_1, \ldots, φ_s \in Hom_R(ω_R,R)$ with $tr(ω_R)=φ_1(ω_R) + \cdots + φ_s(ω_R)$ is called the Teter number of $R$. We say that $R$ is of Teter type if $s = 1$. It is shown that $R$ is not of Teter type if $R$ is generically Gorenstein. In the present paper, we focus especially on $0$-dimensional graded and monomial $K$-algebras and present various classes of such algebras which are of Teter type.

Classes of cut ideals and their Betti numbers

We study monomial cut ideals associated to a graph $G$, which are a monomial analogue of toric cut ideals as introduced by Sturmfels and Sullivant. Primary decompositions, projective dimensions, and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities are investigated if the graph can be decomposed as $0$-clique sums and disjoint union of subgraphs. The total Betti numbers of a cycle are computed. Moreover, we classify all Freiman ideals among monomial cut ideals.

On the set of trace ideals of a Noetherian ring

We consider trace ideals in Noetherian rings and focus our attention to one-dimensional analytically irreducible local rings. For such rings we classify those Gorenstein rings which admit only a finite number of trace ideals.

The tiny trace ideals of the canonical modules in Cohen-Macaulay rings of dimension one

We study one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay rings whose trace ideal of the canonical module is as small as possible. In this paper we call such rings far-flung Gorenstein rings. We investigate far-flung Gorenstein rings in relation with the endomorphism algebras of the maximal ideals and numerical semigroup rings. We show that the solution of the Rohrbach problem in additive number theory provides an upper bound for the multiplicity of far-flung Gorenstein numerical semigroup rings. Reflexive modules over far-flung Gorenstein rings are also studied.

Graded ideals of König type

Inspired by the notion of König graphs we introduce graded ideals of König type with respect to a monomial order $<$. It is shown that if $I$ is of König type, then the Cohen--Macaulay property of $\ini_<(I)$ does not depend on the characteristic of the base field. This happens to be the case also for $I$ itself when $I$ is a binomial edge ideal. Attached to an ideal of König type is a sequence of linear forms, whose elements are variables or differences of variables. This sequence is a system of parameters for $\ini_<(I)$, and is a potential system of parameters for $I$ itself. We study in detail the ideals of König type among the edge ideals, binomial edge ideals and the toric ideal of a Hibi ring and use the König property to determine explicitly their canonical module.

Graded Bourbaki ideals of graded modules

In this paper we study graded Bourbaki ideals. It is a well-known fact that for torsionfree modules over Noetherian normal domains, Bourbaki sequences exist. We give criteria in terms of certain attached matrices for a homomorphism of modules to induce a Bourbaki sequence. Special attention is given to graded Bourbaki sequences. In the second part of the paper, we apply these results to the Koszul cycles of the residue class field and determine particular Bourbaki ideals explicitly. We also obtain in a special case the relationship between the structure of the Rees algebra of a Koszul cycle and the Rees algebra of its Bourbaki ideal.

Ulrich elements in normal simplicial affine semigroups

Let $H\subseteq \mathbb{N}^d$ be a normal affine semigroup, $R=K[H]$ its semigroup ring over the field $K$ and $ω_R$ its canonical module. The Ulrich elements for $H$ are those $h$ in $H$ such that for the multiplication map by $\mathbf{x}^h$ from $R$ into $ω_R$, the cokernel is an Ulrich module. We say that the ring $R$ is almost Gorenstein if Ulrich elements exist in $H$. For the class of slim semigroups that we introduce, we provide an algebraic criterion for testing the Ulrich propery. When $d=2$, all normal affine semigroups are slim. Here we have a simpler combinatorial description of the Ulrich property. We improve this result for testing the elements in $H$ which are closest to zero. In particular, we give a simple arithmetic criterion for when is $(1,1)$ an Ulrich element in $H$.

Componentwise linear powers and the $x$-condition

Let $S=K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field and $A$ a standard graded $S$-algebra. In terms of the Gröbner basis of the defining ideal $J$ of $A$ we give a condition, called the x-condition, which implies that all graded components $A_k$ of $A$ have linear quotients and with additional assumptions are componentwise linear. A typical example of such an algebra is the Rees ring $R(I)$ of a graded ideal or the symmetric algebra $Sym(M)$ of a module $M$. We apply our criterion to study certain symmetric algebras and the powers of vertex cover ideals of certain classes of graphs.

On the symbolic powers of binomial edge ideals

We show that under some conditions, if the initial ideal in$_<(I)$ of an ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring has the property that its symbolic and ordinary powers coincide, then the ideal $I$ shares the same property. We apply this result to prove the equality between symbolic and ordinary powers for binomial edge ideals with quadratic Gröbner basis.

Canonical trace ideal and residue for numerical semigroup rings

For a numerical semigroup ring $K[H]$ we study the trace of its canonical ideal. The colength of this ideal is called the residue of $H$. This invariant measures how far is $H$ from being symmetric, i.e. $K[H]$ from being a Gorenstein ring. We remark that the canonical trace ideal contains the conductor ideal, and we study bounds for the residue. For $3$-generated numerical semigroups we give explicit formulas for the canonical trace ideal and the residue of $H$. Thus, in this setting we can classify those whose residue is at most one (the nearly-Gorenstein ones), and we show the eventual periodic behaviour of the residue in a shifted family.

The trace of the canonical module

The trace of the canonical module (the canonical trace) determines the non-Gorenstein locus of a local Cohen--Macaulay ring. We call a local Cohen--Macaulay ring nearly Gorenstein, if its canonical trace contains the maximal ideal. Similar definitions can be made for positively graded Cohen--Macaulay $K$-algebras. We study the canonical trace for tensor products and Segre products of algebras, as well as of (squarefree) Veronese subalgebras. The results are used to classify the nearly Gorenstein Hibi rings. We study connections between the class of nearly Gorenstein rings and that of almost Gorenstein rings. We show that in dimension one, the former class includes the latter.

Systems of parameters and the Cohen--Macaulay property

We recall a numerical criteria for Cohen--Macaulayness related to system of parameters, and introduce monomial ideals of König type which include the edge ideals of König graphs. We show that a monomial ideal is of König type if and only if its corresponding residue class ring admits a system of parameters whose elements are of the form $x_i-x_j$. This provides an algebraic characterization of König graphs. We use this special parameter systems for the study of the edge ideal of König graphs and the study of the order complex of a certain family of posets. Finally, for any simplicial complex $Δ$ we introduce a system of parameters for $K[Δ]$ with a universal construction principle, independent of the base field and only dependent on the faces of $Δ$. This system of parameters is an efficient tool to test Cohen--Macaulayness of the Stanley--Reisner ring of a simplicial complex.

Restricted classes of Veronese type ideals and algebras

We study ideals which are generated by monomials of degree $d$ in the polynomial ring in $n$ variables and which satisfy certain numerical side conditions regarding their exponents. Typical examples of such ideals are the ideals of Veronese type, squarefree Veronese ideals or $t$-spread Veronese ideals. In this paper we focus on $c$-bounded $t$-spread Veronese ideals and on Veronese ideals of bounded support. Their powers as well as their fiber cone is also be considered.

Homological shift ideals

For a monomial ideal $I$, we consider the $i$th homological shift ideal of $I$, denoted by $\text{HS}_i(I)$, that is, the ideal generated by the $i$th multigraded shifts of $I$. Some algebraic properties of this ideal are studied. It is shown that for any monomial ideal $I$ and any monomial prime ideal $P$, $\text{HS}_i(I(P))\subseteq \text{HS}_i(I)(P)$ for all $i$, where $I(P)$ is the monomial localization of $I$. In particular, we consider the homological shift ideal of some families of monomial ideals with linear quotients. For any $\textbf{c}$-bounded principal Borel ideal $I$ and for the edge ideal of complement of any path graph, it is proved that $\text{HS}_i(I)$ has linear quotients for all $i$. As an example of $\textbf{c}$-bounded principal Borel ideals, Veronese type ideals are considered and it is shown that the homological shift ideal of these ideals are polymatroidal. This implies that for any polymatroidal ideal which satisfies the strong exchange property, $\text{HS}_j(I)$ is again a polymatroidal ideal for all $j$. Moreover, for any edge ideal with linear resolution, the ideal $\text{HS}_j(I)$ is characterized and it is shown that $\text{HS}_1(I)$ has linear quotients.
