Synthesis of monoclinic IrTe2 under high pressure and its physical properties

In a pressure-temperature (P-T) diagram for synthesizing IrTe2 compounds, the well-studied trigonal (H) phase with the CdI2-type structure is stable at low pressures. The superconducting cubic (C) phase can be synthesized under higher temperatures and pressures. A rhombohedral phase with the crystal structure similar to the C phase can be made at ambient pressure; but the phase contains a high concentration of Ir deficiency. In this paper, we report that a rarely studied monoclinic (M) phase can be stabilized in narrow ranges of pressure and temperature in this P-T diagram. The peculiar crystal structure of the M-IrTe2 eliminates the tendency to form Ir-Ir dimers found in the H phase. The M phase has been fully characterized by structural determination and measurements of electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, DC magnetization, and specific heat. These physical properties have been compared with those in the H and C phases of Ir1-xTe2. Moreover, magnetic and transport properties and specific heat of the M-IrTe2 can be fully justified by calculations with the density-functional theory presented in this paper.

High antiferromagnetic transition temperature of a honeycomb compound SrRu$_2$O$_6$

The high temperature magnetic order in SrRu$_2$O$_6$ was studied by measuring magnetization and neutron powder diffraction with both polarized and unpolarized neutrons. SrRu$_2$O$_6$ crystallizes into the hexagonal lead antimonate (PbSb$_2$O$_6$, space group \textit{P}$\overline{3}$1\textit{m}) structure with layers of edge-sharing RuO$_6$ octahedra separated by Sr$^{2+}$ ions. SrRu$_2$O$_6$ orders at $T_N$=565\,K with Ru moments coupled antiferromagnetically both in-plane and out-of-plane. The magnetic moment is 1.30(2) $μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ru at room temperature and is along the crystallographic \textit{c}-axis in the G-type magnetic structure. We performed density functional calculations with constrained RPA to obtain the electronic structure and effective intra- and inter-orbital interaction parameters. The projected density of states show strong hybridization between Ru 4$d$ and O 2$p$. By downfolding to the target $t_{2g}$ bands we extracted the effective magnetic Hamiltonian. We performed Monte Carlo simulations to determine the transition temperature as a function of inter- and intra-plane couplings and find weak inter plane coupling, 3\% of the intra-plane coupling, permits three dimensional magnetic order at $T_N$. As suggested by the magnetic susceptibility, two-dimensional correlations persist above $T_N$ due to the strong intra-plane coupling.

High pressure floating zone growth and structural properties of ferrimagnetic quantum paraelectric BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$

High quality single crystals of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ were grown using the floating zone technique in flowing oxygen pressurized to 100 atm. Single crystal neutron diffraction was used to determine the nuclear and magnetic structure of BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ at 4 K and 295 K. At both temperatures, there exist local electric dipoles formed by the off-mirror-plane displacements of magnetic Fe$^{3+}$ ions at the bipyramidal sites. The displacement at 4 K is about half of that at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the specific heat shows no anomaly associated with long range polar ordering in the temperature range from 1.90-300 K. The inverse dielectric permittivity, $1/\varepsilon$, along the c-axis shows a $T^2$ temperature dependence between 10 K and 20 K, with a significantly reduced temperature dependence displayed below 10 K. Moreover, as the sample is cooled below 1.4 K there is an anomalous sharp upturn in $1/\varepsilon$. These features resemble those of classic quantum paraelectrics such as SrTiO$_3$. The presence of the upturn in $1/\varepsilon$ indicates that BaFe$_{12}$O$_{19}$ is a critical quantum paraelectric system with Fe$^{3+}$ ions involved in both magnetic and electric dipole formation.

Disorder from order among anisotropic next-nearest-neighbor Ising spin chains in SrHo$_2$O$_4$

We describe why Ising spin chains with competing interactions in $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ segregate into ordered and disordered ensembles at low temperatures ($T$). Using elastic neutron scattering, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, the two distinct spin chains are inferred to have Néel ($\uparrow\downarrow\uparrow\downarrow$) and double-Néel ($\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$) ground states respectively. Below $T_\mathrm{N}=0.68(2)$~K, the Néel chains develop three dimensional (3D) long range order (LRO), which arrests further thermal equilibration of the double-Néel chains so they remain in a disordered incommensurate state for $T$ below $T_\mathrm{S}= 0.52(2)$~K. $\rm SrHo_2O_4$ distills an important feature of incommensurate low dimensional magnetism: kinetically trapped topological defects in a quasi$-d-$dimensional spin system can preclude order in $d+1$ dimensions.

Spin liquid ground state in the frustrated J1-J2 zigzag chain system BaTb2O4

We have investigated polycrystalline samples of the zigzag chain system BaTb$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron powder diffraction, and muon spin relaxation measurements. Despite the onset of Tb$^{3+}$ short-range antiferromagnetic correlations at $|θ_{CW}|$ $=$ 18.5 K and a very large effective moment, our combined measurements indicate that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ remains paramagnetic down to 0.095 K. The magnetic properties of this material show striking similarities to the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Tb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, and therefore we propose that BaTb$_2$O$_4$ is a new large moment spin liquid candidate.

Flux growth utilizing the reaction between flux and crucible

Flux growth involves dissolving the components of the target compound in an appropriate flux at high temperatures and then crystallizing under supersaturation controlled by cooling or evaporating the flux. A refractory crucible is generally used to contain the high temperature melt. The reaction between the melt and crucible materials can modify the composition of the melt, which typically results in growth failure, or contaminates the crystals. Thus one principle in designing a flux growth is to select suitable flux and crucible materials thus to avoid any reaction between them. In this paper, we review two cases of flux growth in which the reaction between flux and Al$_2$O$_3$ crucible tunes the oxygen content in the melt and helps the crystallization of desired compositions. For the case of La$_5$Pb$_3$O, Al$_2$O$_3$ crucible oxidizes La to form a passivating La$_2$O$_3$ layer which not only prevents further oxidization of La in the melt but also provides [O] to the melt. For the case of La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$, it is believed that the Al$_2$O$_3$ crucible reacts with NaAsO$_2$ and the reaction consumes oxygen in the melt thus maintaining an oxygen-free environment.

Magnetic and structural transitions in La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been grown out of an NaAs flux in an alumina crucible and characterized by measuring magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, as well as single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction. La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals show a structural phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low-temperature orthorhombic phase at T$_s$\,=\,125\,K. This structural transition is accompanied by an anomaly in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. Concomitant with the structural phase transition, the Fe moments order along the \emph{a} direction with an ordered moment of 0.7(1)\,$μ_{\textup{B}}$ at \emph{T}\,=\,5 K. The low temperature stripe antiferromagnetic structure is the same as that in other \emph{A}Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (\emph{A}\,=\,Ca, Sr, Ba) compounds. La$_{0.5-x}$Na$_{0.5+x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ provides a new material platform for the study of iron-based superconductors where the electron-hole asymmetry could be studied by simply varying La/Na ratio.

Magnetic ordering in the frustrated J1-J2 Ising chain candidate BaNd2O4

The AR$_2$O$_4$ family (R = rare earth) have recently been attracting interest as a new series of frustrated magnets, with the magnetic R atoms forming zigzag chains running along the $c$-axis. We have investigated polycrystalline BaNd$_2$O$_4$ with a combination of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. Magnetic Bragg peaks are observed below $T_N$ $=$ 1.7 K, and they can be indexed with a propagation vector of $\vec{k}$ $=$ (0 1/2 1/2). The signal from magnetic diffraction is well described by long-range ordering from only one of the two types of Nd zigzag chains, with collinear up-up-down-down intrachain spin configurations. Furthermore, low temperature magnetization and heat capacity measurements reveal two field-induced spin transitions at 2.5 T and 4 T for $T$ $=$ 0.46 K. The high field phase is paramagnetic, while the intermediate field state may arise from a spin transition of the long-range ordered Nd chains, resulting in an up-up-down intrachain spin configuration. The proposed intermediate field state is consistent with the magnetic structure determined in zero field for these chains by NPD, as both phases are predicted for the classical Ising chain model with nearest neighbor and next nearest neighbor interactions.

Anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in single-crystalline CeFeAsO as seen via high-resolution x-ray diffraction

Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction studies of CeFeAsO reveal strong anisotropy in the charge correlation lengths along or perpendicular to the in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM) wave-vector at low temperatures, indicating an anisotropic two-dimensional magnetoelastic coupling. The high-resolution setup allows to distinctly monitor each of the twin domains by virtue of a finite misfit angle between them that follows the order parameter. In addition, we find that the in-plane correlations, above the orthorhombic (O)-to-tetragonal (T) transition, are shorter than those in each of the domains in the AFM phase, indicating a distribution of the in-plane lattice constants. This strongly suggests that the phase above the structural O-to-T transition is virtually T with strong O-T fluctuations that are probably induced by spin fluctuations.

Zero-Field muSR Search for a Time-Reversal-Symmetry-Breaking Mixed Pairing State in Superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report the results of a zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-muSR) study of superconducting Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0.5 < x < 0.9) in search of weak spontaneous internal magnetic fields associated with proposed time-reversal-symmetry breaking mixed pairing states. The measurements were performed on polycrystalline samples, which do not exhibit the mesoscopic phase separation previously observed in single crystals of Ba1-xKxFe2As2. No evidence of spontaneous internal magnetic fields is found in any of the samples at temperatures down to T ~ 0.02 K.

Magnetic Phase Transition in the Low Dimensional Compound BaMn2Si2O7

The structural and magnetic properties of BaMn2Si2O7 have been investigated. The magnetic susceptibility and specific heat, measured using single crystals, suggest that the quasi-one-dimensional magnetism originating from the loosely coupled Mn2+ chain carrying S=5/2 is present at high temperatures, which is similar to the other quasi-one-dimensional barium silicates, BaM2Si2O7 (M: Cu and Co). The Neel temperature (TN=26 K) is high compared to the magnetic interaction along the chain (J = -6 K). The neutron powder diffraction study has revealed that the magnetic structure is long-ranged with antiferromagnetic arrangement along the chain (c) direction and ferromagnetic arrangement along the a and b axes. The detailed structural analysis suggests that the interchain interaction via Mn-O-Mn bond along the a axis is relatively large, which makes the system behave more two-dimensionally in the ac plane and enhances TN.

Absence of structural transition in TM0.5IrTe2 (TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni)

TM-doped IrTe2(TM=Mn, Fe, Co, Ni) compounds were synthesized by solid state reaction. Single crystal x-ray diffraction experiments indicate that part of the doped TM ions (TM=Fe, Co, and Ni) substitute for Ir, and the rest intercalate into the octahedral interstitial sites located in between IrTe2 layers. Due to the lattice mismatch between MnTe2 and IrTe2, Mn has limited solubility in IrTe2 lattice. The trigonal structure is stable in the whole temperature range 1.80<T<300K for all doped compositions. No long range magnetic order or superconductivity was observed in any doped compositions above 1.80K. A spin glass behavior below 10K was observed in Fe-doped IrTe2 from the temperature dependence of magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat. The low temperature specific heat data suggest the electron density of states is enhanced in Fe- and Co-doped compositions but reduced in Ni-doped IrTe2. With the 3d transition metal doping the trigonal a-lattice parameters increases but the c-lattice parameter decreases. Detailed analysis of the single crystal x-ray diffraction data shows that interlayer Te-Te distance increases despite a reduced c-lattice. The importance of the Te-Te, Te-Ir, and Ir-Ir bonding is discussed.

Dy-V magnetic interaction and local structure bias on the complex spin and orbital ordering in Dy$_{1-x}$Tb$_{x}$VO$_3$ (x\,=\,0 and 0.2)

The spin and orbital ordering in Dy$_{1-x}$Tb$_{x}$VO$_3$ (x\,=\,0 and 0.2) was studied by measuring x-ray powder diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, and neutron single crystal diffraction. The results show that G-OO/C-AF and C-OO/G-AF phases coexist in Dy$_{0.8}$Tb$_{0.20}$VO$_3$ in the temperature range 2\,K$\sim$60\,K and the volume fraction of each phase is temperature and field dependent. The ordering of Dy moments at T*\,=\,12\,K induces a transition from G-OO/C-AF to a C-OO/G-AF phase. Magnetic fields suppress the long range order of Dy moments and thus the C-OO/G-AF phase below T*. The polarized moments induced at the Dy sublattice by external magnetic fields couple to the V 3d moments and this coupling favors the G-OO/C-AF state. Also discussed is the effect of the Dy-V magnetic interaction and local structure distortion on the spin and orbital ordering in Dy$_{1-x}$Tb$_{x}$VO$_3$.

Flux growth and physical properties of Mo3Sb7 single crystals

Millimeter sized single crystals of Mo3Sb7 are grown using the self-flux technique and a thorough characterization of their structural, magnetic, thermal and transport properties is reported. The structure parameters for the high-temperature cubic phase and the low-temperature tetragonal phase were, for the first time, determined with neutron single crystal diffraction. Both X-ray powder diffraction and neutron single crystal diffraction at room temperature confirmed that Mo3Sb7 crystallizes in Ir3Ge7-type cubic structure with space group Im-3m. The cubic-tetragonal structure transition at 53K is verified by the peak splitting of (4 0 0) reflection observed by X-ray single crystal diffraction and the dramatic intensity change of (12 0 0) peak observed by neutron single crystal diffraction. The structural transition is accompanied by a sharp drop in magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and thermopower while cooling. A weak lambda anomaly was also observed around 53K in the temperature dependence of specific heat and the entropy change across the transition is estimated to be 1.80J/molMoK. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility was measured up to 750K and it follows a Curie-Weiss behavior above room temperature. Analysis of the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility suggests a spin gap of 110K around 53K. A typical phonon thermal conductivity was observed in the low temperature tetragonal phase. A glassy phonon thermal conductivity above 53K suggests a structural instability in a wide temperature range. Superconductivity was observed at 2.35K in the as-grown crystals and the dimensionless specific heat jump was determined to be 1.49, which is slightly larger than the BCS value of 1.43 for the weak-coupling limit.

NMR Search for the Spin Nematic State in LaFeAsO Single Crystal

We report a 75-As single crystal NMR investigation of LaFeAsO, the parent phase of a pnictide high Tc superconductor. We demonstrate that spin dynamics develop a strong two-fold anisotropy within each orthorhombic domain below the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural phase transition at T[TO]~156 K. This intermediate state with a dynamical breaking of the rotational symmetry freezes progressively into a spin density wave (SDW) below T[SDW]~142 K. Our findings are consistent with the presence of a spin nematic state below T[TO] with an incipient magnetic order.

Frustration by competing interactions in the highly-distorted double perovskites La2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os)

The usual classical behaviour of S = 3/2, B-site ordered double perovskites generally results in simple, commensurate magnetic ground states. In contrast, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements for the S = 3/2 systems La2NaB'O6 (B' = Ru, Os) reveal an incommensurate magnetic ground state for La2NaRuO6 and a drastically suppressed ordered moment for La2NaOsO6. This behaviour is attributed to the large monoclinic structural distortions of these double perovskites. The distortions have the effect of weakening the nearest neighbour superexchange interactions, presumably to an energy scale that is comparable to the next nearest neighbour superexchange. The exotic ground states in these materials can then arise from a competition between these two types of antiferromagnetic interactions, providing a novel mechanism for achieving frustration in the double perovskite family.

Magnetic phase transitions in single crystals of the chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2

The chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 has been investigated by magnetic, transport and thermal properties measurements on single crystals and by first principles electronic structure calculations. From the measured field and temperature dependence of the magnetization for fields applied perpendicular to the c axis, the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed in the vicinity of the phase transitions. A transition from a paramagnetic to a magnetically ordered phase occurs near 120 K. With increasing magnetic field and at temperatures below 120 K, this material undergoes transitions from a helimagnetic to a soliton-lattice phase near 900 Oe, and then to a ferromagnetic phase near 1300 Oe. The transitions are found to strongly affect the electrical transport. The resistivity decreases sharply upon cooling near 120 K, and the spin reorientation from the helimagnetic ground state to the commensurate ferromagnetic state is evident in the magnetoresistance. At high fields a large magnetoresistance (55 % at 140 kOe) is observed near the magnetic transition temperature. Heat capacity and electronic structure calculations show the density of states at the Fermi level is low in the magnetically ordered state. Effects of spin fluctuations are likely important in understanding the behavior of Cr1/3NbS2 near and above the magnetic ordering transitions.

High superconducting anisotropy and weak vortex pinning in Co doped LaFeAsO

Here, we present an electrical transport study in single crystals of LaFe$_{0.92}$Co$_{0.08}$AsO ($T_c \simeq 9.1$ K) under high magnetic fields. In contrast to most of the previously reported Fe based superconductors, and despite its relatively low $T_c$, LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO shows a superconducting anisotropy which is comparable to those seen for instance in the cuprates or $γ_H = H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^{c} = m_c/m_{ab} \simeq 9$, where $m_c/m_{ab}$ is the effective mass anisotropy. Although, in the present case and as in all Fe based superconductors, $γ\rightarrow 1$ as $T \rightarrow 0$. Under the application of an external field, we also observe a remarkable broadening of the superconducting transition particularly for fields applied along the inter-planar direction. Both observations indicate that the low dimensionality of LaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$AsO is likely to lead to a more complex vortex phase-diagram when compared to the other Fe arsenides and consequently, to a pronounced dissipation associated with the movement of vortices in a possible vortex liquid phase. When compared to, for instance, F-doped compounds pertaining to same family, we obtain rather small activation energies for the motion of vortices. This suggests that the disorder introduced by doping LaFeAsO with F is more effective in pinning the vortices than alloying it with Co.
