Complex itinerant ferromagnetism in noncentrosymmetric Cr11Ge19

The noncentrosymmetric ferromagnet Cr11Ge19 has been investigated by electrical transport, AC and DC magnetization, heat capacity, x-ray diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy, and first principles electronic structure calculations. Complex itinerant ferromagnetism in this material is indicated by nonlinearity in conventional Arrott plots, unusual behavior of AC susceptibility, and a weak heat capacity anomaly near the Curie temperature (88 K). The inclusion of spin wave excitations was found to be important in modeling the low temperature heat capacity. The temperature dependence of the elastic moduli and lattice constants, including negative thermal expansion along the c axis at low temperatures, indicate strong magneto-elastic coupling in this system. Calculations show strong evidence for itinerant ferromagnetism and suggest a noncollinear ground state may be expected.

Magnetism dependent phonon anomaly in LaFeAsO observed via inelastic x-ray scattering

The phonon dispersion was measured at room temperature along (0,0,L) in the tetragonal phase of LaFeAsO using inelastic x-ray scattering. Spin-polarized first-principles calculations imposing various types of antiferromagnetic order are in better agreement with the experimental results than nonmagnetic calculations, although the measurements were made well above the magnetic ordering temperature, T_N. Splitting observed between two A_{1g} phonon modes at 22 and 26 meV is only observed in spin-polarized calculations. Magneto-structural effects similar to those observed in the AFe_2As_2 materials are confirmed present in LaFeAsO. The presence of Fe-spin is necessary to find reasonable agreement of the calculations with the measured spectrum well above T_N. On-site Fe and As force constants show significant softening compared to nonmagnetic calculations, however an investigation of the real-space force constants associates the magnetoelastic coupling with a complex renormalization instead of softening of a specific pairwise force.

Role of Magnetic Exchange Energy on Charge Ordering in RSFO (R=La, Pr, and Nd)

Inelastic neutron scattering is applied to study the role of magnetism in stabilizing the charge ordered state in \emph{R}$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ (\emph{R}SFO) (\emph{R} = La, Pr, and Nd). The ratio of the ferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_F$) and antiferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_{AF}$), |J$_F$ /J$_{AF}|, is a key indicator of the stability of the charge ordered and antiferromagnetic ordered state. This ratio is obtained from the spin wave spectrum by inelastic neutron scattering and is sufficiently large to suggest that the magnetic exchange energy alone can stabilize the charge ordered state in La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ and Pr$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$. The exchange ratio decreases from La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ to Nd1$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ which indicates a gradual destabilization of the magnetic exchange mechanism for charge ordering in correspondence with the observed reduction in the ordering temperature.

Structural phase transition and superlattice misfit strain of RFeAsO (R = La, Pr, Nd and Sm)

The tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition (SPT) in LaFeAsO (La-1111) and SmFeAsO (Sm-1111) single crystals measured by high resolution x-ray diffraction is found to be sharp while the RFeAsO (R=La, Nd, Pr, Sm) polycrystalline samples show a broad continuous SPT. Comparing the polycrystalline and the single crystal 1111 samples, the critical exponents of the SPT are found to be the same while the correlation length critical exponents are found to be very different. These results imply that the lattice fluctuations in 1111 systems change in samples with different surface to volume ratio that is assigned to the relieve of the temperature dependent superlattice misfit strain between active iron layers and the spacer layers in 1111 systems. This phenomenon that is missing in the AFe2As2 (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) "122" systems, with the same electronic structure but different for the thickness and the elastic constant of the spacer layers, is related with the different maximum superconducting transition temperature in the 1111 (55 K) versus 122 (35 K) systems and implies the surface reconstruction in 1111 single crystals.

Interplay between Fe and Nd magnetism in NdFeAsO single crystals

The structural and magnetic phase transitions have been studied on NdFeAsO single crystals by neutron and x-ray diffraction complemented by resistivity and specific heat measurements. Two low-temperature phase transitions have been observed in addition to the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition at T_S = 142 K and the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) Fe order below T_N = 137 K. The Fe moments order AFM in the well-known stripe-like structure in the (ab) plane, but change from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) arrangement along the c direction below T* = 15 K accompanied by the onset of Nd AFM order below T_Nd = 6 K with this same AFM configuration. The iron magnetic order-order transition in NdFeAsO accentuates the Nd-Fe interaction and the delicate balance of c-axis exchange couplings that results in AFM in LaFeAsO and FM in CeFeAsO and PrFeAsO.

Phase transitions and iron-ordered moment form factor in LaFeAsO

Elastic neutron scattering studies of an optimized LaFeAsO single crystal reveal that upon cooling, an onset of the tetragonal (T)-to-orthorhombic (O) structural transition occurs at $T_\texttt{S} \approx 156$ K, and it exhibits a sharp transition at $T_\texttt{P} \approx 148$ K. We argue that in the temperature range $T_\texttt{S}$ to $T_\texttt{P}$, T and O structures may dynamically coexist possibly due to nematic spin correlations recently proposed for the iron pnictides, and we attribute $T_\texttt{P}$ to the formation of long-range O domains from the finite local precursors. The antiferromagnetic structure emerges at $T_\texttt{N} \approx 140$ K, with the iron moment direction along the O \emph{a} axis. We extract the iron magnetic form factor and use the tabulated $\langle j_0\rangle$ of Fe, Fe$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{3+}$ to obtain a magnetic moment size of $\sim$0.8 $μ_\texttt{B}$ at 9.5 K.

Surface-driven electronic structure in LaFeAsO studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We measured the electronic structure of an iron arsenic parent compound LaFeAsO using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). By comparing with a full-potential Linear Augmented PlaneWave calculation we show that the extra large Gamma hole pocket measured via ARPES comes from electronic structure at the sample surface. Based on this we discuss the strong polarization dependence of the band structure and a temperature-dependent hole-like band around the M point. The two phenomena give additional evidences for the existence of the surface-driven electronic structure.

Zooming on the Quantum Critical Point in Nd-LSCO

Recent studies of the high-Tc superconductor La_(1.6-x)Nd_(0.4)Sr_(x)CuO_(4) (Nd-LSCO) have found a linear-T in-plane resistivity rho_(ab) and a logarithmic temperature dependence of the thermopower S / T at a hole doping p = 0.24, and a Fermi-surface reconstruction just below p = 0.24 [1, 2]. These are typical signatures of a quantum critical point (QCP). Here we report data on the c-axis resistivity rho_(c)(T) of Nd-LSCO measured as a function of temperature near this QCP, in a magnetic field large enough to entirely suppress superconductivity. Like rho_(ab), rho_(c) shows an upturn at low temperature, a signature of Fermi surface reconstruction caused by stripe order. Tracking the height of the upturn as it decreases with doping enables us to pin down the precise location of the QCP where stripe order ends, at p* = 0.235 +- 0.005. We propose that the temperature T_(rho) below which the upturn begins marks the onset of the pseudogap phase, found to be roughly twice as high as the stripe ordering temperature in this material.

Flux growth at ambient pressure of millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO

Millimeter-sized single crystals of LaFeAsO, LaFeAsO1-xFx, and LaFe1-xCoxAsO were grown in NaAs flux at ambient pressure. The detailed growth procedure and crystal characterizations are reported. The as-grown crystals have typical dimensions of 3 * 4 * 0.05-0.3 mm3 with the crystallographic c-axis perpendicular to the plane of the plate-like single crystals. Some crystals manifest linear dimensions as large as 4-5 mm. X-ray and neutron single crystal scattering confirmed that LaFeAsO crystals exhibit a structural phase transition at Ts ~ 154 K and a magnetic phase transition at TSDW ~ 140 K. The transition temperatures agree with those determined by anisotropic magnetization, in-plane electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements and are consistent with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Co and F were successfully introduced into the lattice leading to superconducting LaFe1-xCoxAsO and LaFeAsO1-xFx single crystals, respectively. This growth protocol has been successfully employed to grow single crystals of NdFeAsO. Thus it is expected to be broadly applicable to grow other RMAsO (R = rare earth, M = transition metal) compounds. These large crystals will facilitate the efforts of unraveling the underlying physics of iron pniticide superconductors.

Structural phase transition in Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals

We present thermodynamic, structural and transport measurements on Ba(Fe0.973Cr0.027)2As2 single crystals. All measurements reveal sharp anomalies at ~ 112 K. Single crystal x-ray diffraction identifies the structural transition as a first order, from the high-temperature tetragonal I4/mmm to the low-temperature orthorhombic Fmmm structure, in contrast to an earlier report.

Enhancement of the Nernst effect by stripe order in a high-Tc superconductor

The Nernst effect in metals is highly sensitive to two kinds of phase transition: superconductivity and density-wave order. The large positive Nernst signal observed in hole-doped high-Tc superconductors above their transition temperature Tc has so far been attributed to fluctuating superconductivity. Here we show that in some of these materials the large Nernst signal is in fact caused by stripe order, a form of spin / charge modulation which causes a reconstruction of the Fermi surface. In LSCO doped with Nd or Eu, the onset of stripe order causes the Nernst signal to go from small and negative to large and positive, as revealed either by lowering the hole concentration across the quantum critical point in Nd-LSCO, or lowering the temperature across the ordering temperature in Eu-LSCO. In the latter case, two separate peaks are resolved, respectively associated with the onset of stripe order at high temperature and superconductivity near Tc. This sensitivity to Fermi-surface reconstruction makes the Nernst effect a promising probe of broken symmetry in high-Tc superconductors.

Thermopower across the pseudogap critical point of La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4): Evidence for a quantum critical point in a hole-doped high-Tc superconductor

The thermopower S of the high-Tc superconductor La(1.6-x)Nd(0.4)Sr(x)CuO(4) was measured as a function of temperature T near its pseudogap critical point, the critical hole doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero. Just above p*, S/T varies as ln(1/T) over a decade of temperature. Below p*, S/T undergoes a large increase below T*. As with the temperature dependence of the resistivity, which is linear just above p* and undergoes a large upturn below T*, these are typical signatures of a quantum phase transition. This suggests that p* is a quantum critical point below which some order sets in, causing a reconstruction of the Fermi surface, whose fluctuations are presumably responsible for the linear-T resistivity and logarithmic thermopower. We discuss the possibility that this order is the "stripe" order known to exist in this material.

Linear-T resistivity and change in Fermi surface at the pseudogap critical point of a high-Tc superconductor

A fundamental question of high-temperature superconductors is the nature of the pseudogap phase which lies between the Mott insulator at zero doping and the Fermi liquid at high doping p. Here we report on the behaviour of charge carriers near the zero-temperature onset of that phase, namely at the critical doping p* where the pseudogap temperature T* goes to zero, accessed by investigating a material in which superconductivity can be fully suppressed by a steady magnetic field. Just below p*, the normal-state resistivity and Hall coefficient of La1.6-xNd0.4SrxCuO4 are found to rise simultaneously as the temperature drops below T*, revealing a change in the Fermi surface with a large associated drop in conductivity. At p*, the resistivity shows a linear temperature dependence as T goes to zero, a typical signature of a quantum critical point. These findings impose new constraints on the mechanisms responsible for inelastic scattering and Fermi surface transformation in theories of the pseudogap phase.

Effects of Co substitution on thermodynamic and transport properties and anisotropic $H_{c2}$ in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

Single crystalline samples of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ with $x < 0.12$ have been grown and characterized via microscopic, thermodynamic and transport measurements. With increasing Co substitution, the thermodynamic and transport signatures of the structural (high temperature tetragonal to low temperature orthorhombic) and magnetic (high temperature non magnetic to low temperature antiferromagnetic) transitions are suppressed at a rate of roughly 15 K per percent Co. In addition, for $x \ge 0.038$ superconductivity is stabilized, rising to a maximum $T_c$ of approximately 23 K for $x \approx 0.07$ and decreasing for higher $x$ values. The $T - x$ phase diagram for Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ indicates that either superconductivity can exist in both low temperature crystallographic phases or that there is a structural phase separation. Anisotropic, superconducting, upper critical field data ($H_{c2}(T)$) show a significant and clear change in anisotropy between samples that have higher temperature structural phase transitions and those that do not. These data show that the superconductivity is sensitive to the suppression of the higher temperature phase transition.

Determination of the exchange anisotropy in perovskite antiferromagnets using powder inelastic neutron scattering

A procedure is outlined for the determination of magnetic exchange constants in anisotropic perovskite anitferromagnets using powder inelastic neutron scattering. Spin wave densities-of-states are measured using time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering for LaMnO$_{3}$ ($A$-type antiferromagnet), LaVO$_{3}$ ($C$-type), and LaFeO$_{3}$ ($G$-type) and compared to Heisenberg model calculations. The anisotropy of in-plane ($J_{ab}$) and out-of-plane ($J_{c}$) exchange constants can be obtained from the data. The procedure quickly determines the magnetic exchange interactions without the need for single-crystal dispersion measurements and allows for rapid systematic studies of the evolution of magnetism in perovskite systems.

Structural transition and anisotropic properties of single crystalline SrFe2As2

Plate-like single crystals of SrFe2As2 as large as 3x3x0.5 mm3 have been grown out of Sn flux. The SrFe2As2 single crystals show a structural phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic phase at To = 198 K, and do not show any sign of superconductivity down to 1.8 K. The structural transition is accompanied by an anomaly in the electrical resistivity, Hall resistivity, specific heat, and the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility. In an intermediate temperature range from 198 K to 160 K, single crystal X-ray diffraction suggests a coexistence of the high-temperature tetragonal and the low-temperature orthorhombic phases.

Stabilization of charge ordering in La_(1/3)Sr_(2/3)FeO_(3-d) by magnetic exchange

The magnetic exchange energies in charge ordered La_(1/3)Sr_(2/3)FeO_(3-d) (LSFO) and its parent compound LaFeO_(3) (LFO) have been determined by inelastic neutron scattering. In LSFO, the measured ratio of ferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe5+ pairs (J_F) and antiferromagnetic exchange between Fe3+ - Fe3+ pairs (J_AF) fulfills the criterion for charge ordering driven by magnetic interactions (|J_F/J_AF| > 1). The 30% reduction of J_AF as compared to LFO indicates that doped holes are delocalized, and charge ordering occurs without a dominant influence from Coulomb interactions.
