Two-photon exchange corrections to the pion form factor

We compute two-photon exchange corrections to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion, taking into account the finite size of the pion. Compared to the soft-photon approximation for the infrared divergent contribution which neglects hadron structure effects, the corrections are found to be < 1% for small Q^2 (Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2), but increase to several percent for Q^2 > 1 GeV^2 at extreme backward angles.

Detailed analysis of two-boson exchange in parity-violating e-p scattering

We present a comprehensive study of two-boson exchange (TBE) corrections in parity-violating electron-proton elastic scattering. Within a hadronic framework, we compute contributions from box (and crossed box) diagrams in which the intermediate states are described by nucleons and Delta baryons. The Delta contribution is found to be much smaller than the nucleon one at backward angles (small epsilon), but becomes dominant in the forward scattering limit (epsilon -> 1), where the nucleon contribution vanishes. The dependence of the corrections on the input hadronic form factors is small for Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, but becomes significant at larger Q^2. We compute the nucleon and Delta TBE corrections relevant for recent and planned parity-violating experiments, with the total corrections ranging from -1% for forward angles to 1-2% at backward kinematics.

Coulomb corrections in quasi-elastic scattering: tests of the effective-momentum approximation

Coulomb corrections for quasi-elastic scattering of electrons by nuclei are calculated using eikonal distorted waves. Corrections to the lowest-order eikonal approximation are included in order to obtain accurate results. Spin-dependent eikonal phase shifts are evaluated and they yield very small corrections to the longitudinal and transverse cross sections at electron energies of 500 MeV or higher. Because of this the Rosenbluth procedure is accurate for separation of the longitudinal and transverse response functions. The effective-momentum approximation is also found to be accurate with regard to removal of the remaining Coulomb effects from the distorted waves. Calculations are presented for electron scattering from Pb and Fe nuclei at energies of 500 MeV and 800 MeV and momentum transfers q = 550 MeV/c and 900 MeV/c.

Eikonal analysis of Coulomb distortion in quasi-elastic electron scattering

An eikonal expansion is used to provide systematic corrections to the eikonal approximation through order $1/k^2$, where $k$ is the wave number. Electron wave functions are obtained for the Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential. They are used to investigate distorted-wave matrix elements for quasi-elastic electron scattering from a nucleus. A form of effective-momentum approximation is obtained using trajectory-dependent eikonal phases and focusing factors. Fixing the Coulomb distortion effects at the center of the nucleus, the often-used ema approximation is recovered. Comparisons of these approximations are made with full calculations using the electron eikonal wave functions. The ema results are found to agree well with the full calculations.

Faddeev calculation of pentaquark $Θ^+$ in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model-based diquark picture

A Bethe-Salpeter-Faddeev (BSF) calculation is performed for the pentaquark $Θ^+$ in the diquark picture of Jaffe and Wilczek in which $Θ^+$ is a diquark-diquark-${\bar s}$ three-body system. Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is used to calculate the lowest order diagrams in the two-body scatterings of ${\bar s}D$ and $D D$. With the use of coupling constants determined from the meson sector, we find that ${\bar s}D$ interaction is attractive in s-wave while $DD$ interaction is repulsive in p-wave. With only the lowest three-body channel considered, we do not find a bound $ \frac 12^+$ pentaquark state. Instead, a bound pentaquark $Θ^+$ with $ \frac 12^-$ is obtained with a unphysically strong vector mesonic coupling constants.

Effect of two-boson exchange on parity-violating e-p scattering

We compute the corrections from two-photon and photon-Z exchange in parity-violating elastic electron-proton scattering, used to extract the strange form factors of the proton. We use a hadronic formalism that successfully reconciled the earlier discrepancy in the proton's electron to magnetic form factor ratio, suitably extended to the weak sector. Implementing realistic electroweak form factors, we find effects of the order 2-3% at Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2, which are largest at backward angles, and have a strong Q^2 dependence at low Q^2. Two-boson contributions to the weak axial current are found to be enhanced at low Q^2 and for forward angles. We provide corrections at kinematics relevant for recent and upcoming parity-violating experiments.

A Faddeev Calculation for Pentaquark $Θ^+$ in Diquark Picture with Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Type Interaction

With the use of coupling constants determined from the meson sector, we find that ${\bar s}D$ interaction is attractive while $DD$ interaction is repulsive, and there is no bound $\frac 12^+$ pentaquark state. A bound pentaquark $Θ^+$ can only be obtained with unphysically strong vector mesonic coupling constants.

Global analysis of proton elastic form factor data with two-photon exchange corrections

We use the world's data on elastic electron--proton scattering and calculations of two-photon exchange effects to extract corrected values of the proton's electric and magnetic form factors over the full Q^2 range of the existing data. Our analysis combines the corrected Rosenbluth cross section and polarization transfer data, and is the first extraction of G_Ep and G_Mp including explicit two-photon exchange corrections and their associated uncertainties. In addition, we examine the angular dependence of the corrected cross sections, and discuss the possible nonlinearities of the cross section as a function of epsilon.

Coulomb corrections in quasi-elastic scattering based on the eikonal expansion for electron wave functions

An eikonal expansion is developed in order to provide systematic corrections to the eikonal approximation through order 1/k^2, where k is the wave number. The expansion is applied to wave functions for the Klein-Gordon equation and for the Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential. Convergence is rapid at energies above about 250 MeV. Analytical results for the eikonal wave functions are obtained for a simple analytical form of the Coulomb potential of a nucleus. They are used to investigate distorted-wave matrix elements for quasi-elastic electron scattering from a nucleus. Focusing factors are shown to arise from the corrections to the eikonal approximation. A precise form of the effective-momentum approximation is developed by use of a momentum shift that depends on the electron's energy loss.

$Δ$ resonance contribution to two-photon exchange in electron-proton scattering

We calculate the effects on the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section of the two-photon exchange contribution with an intermediate $Δ$ resonance. The $Δ$ two-photon exchange contribution is found to be smaller in magnitude than the previously evaluated nucleon contribution, with an opposite sign at backward scattering angles. The sum of the nucleon and $Δ$ two-photon exchange corrections has an angular dependence compatible with both the polarisation transfer and the Rosenbluth methods of measuring the nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Two-photon exchange in elastic electron-nucleon scattering

A detailed study of two-photon exchange in unpolarized and polarized elastic electron--nucleon scattering is presented, taking particular account of nucleon finite size effects. Contributions from nucleon elastic intermediate states are found to have a strong angular dependence, which leads to a partial resolution of the discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer measurements of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, G_E/G_M. The two-photon exchange contribution to the longitudinal polarization transfer P_L is small, whereas the contribution to the transverse polarization transfer P_T is enhanced at backward angles by several percent, increasing with Q^2. This gives rise to a small, ~3% suppression of G_E/G_M obtained from the polarization transfer ratio P_T/P_L at large Q^2. We also compare the two-photon exchange effects with data on the ratio of e^+ p to e^- p cross sections, which is predicted to be enhanced at backward angles. Finally, we evaluate the corrections to the form factors of the neutron, and estimate the elastic intermediate state contribution to the ^3He form factors.

The coupled-channel analysis of the D and D_s mesons

The shift of the p-wave $D_s$ meson mass due to coupling to the DK channel is calculated without fitting parameters using the chiral Lagrangian. As a result the original $Q\bar q$ mass 2.490 MeV generically calculated in the relativistic quark models is shifted down to the experimental value 2317 MeV. With the same Lagrangian the shift of the radial excited $1^-$ level is much smaller, while the total width $Γ> 100$ MeV and the width ratio is in contradiction with the $D^*(2632)$ state observed by SELEX group.

$γ^{*}NΔ$ Form Factors from a Relativistic Dynamical Model of Pion Electroproduction

We obtain the electromagnetic form factors of the $γNΔ$ transition by analyzing recent pion-electroproduction data using a fully relativistic dynamical model. Special care is taken to satisfy Ward-Takahashi identities for the Born term in the presence of form factors thereby allowing the use of realistic electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and pion. We parametrize the $Q^2$ dependence of the {\it bare} $γN Δ$ form factors by a three-parameter form which is consistent with the asymptotic behavior inferred from QCD. The parameters of the bare $γN Δ$ form factors are the only free parameters of the model and are fitted to the differential cross-section and multipole-analysis data up to $Q^2=4$ (GeV/c)$^2$ in the $Δ(1232)$-resonance region. This analysis emphasizes the significance of the pion-cloud effects in the extraction of the resonance parameters.

Effects of perturbative exchanges in a QCD-string model

The QCD-string model for baryons derived by Simonov and used for the calculation of baryon magnetic moments in a previous paper is extended to include also perturbative gluon and meson exchanges. The mass spectrum of the baryon multiplet is studied. For the meson interaction either the pseudoscalar or pseudovector coupling is used. Predictions are compared with the experimental data. Besides these exchanges the influence of excited quark orbitals on the baryon ground state are considered by performing a multichannel calculation. The nucleon-Delta splitting increases due to the mixing of higher quark states while the baryon magnetic momenta decrease. The multichannel calculation with perturbative exchanges is shown to yield reasonable magnetic moments while the mass spectrum is close to experiment.

Two-photon exchange and elastic electron-proton scattering

Two-photon exchange contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering cross sections are evaluated in a simple hadronic model including the finite size of the proton. The corrections are found to be small in magnitude, but with a strong angular dependence at fixed $Q^2$. This is significant for the Rosenbluth technique for determining the ratio of the electric and magnetic form factors of the proton at high $Q^2$, and partly reconciles the apparent discrepancy with the results of the polarization transfer technique.

Neutrino emission in neutron stars

Neutrino emissivities in a neutron star are computed for the neutrino bremsstrahlung process. In the first part the electro-weak nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is calculated in free space in terms of a on-shell $T$-matrix using a generalized Low energy theorem. In the second part the emissivities are calculated in terms of the hadronic polarization at the two-loop level. Various medium effects, such as finite particle width, Pauli blocking in the $T$-matrix are considered. Compared to the pioneering work of Friman and Maxwell in terms of (anti-symmetrized) one-pion exchange the resulting emissivity is about a factor 4 smaller at saturation density.

The Feynman-Schwinger representation in QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for Green's functions in QCD. After an introductory analysis of perturbative properties, the total gluonic field is separated in a rigorous way into a nonperturbative background and valence gluon part. For nonperturbative contributions the background perturbation theory is used systematically, yielding two types of expansions, illustrated by direct physical applications. As an application, we discuss the collinear singularities in the Feynman-Schwinger representation formalism. Moreover, the generalization to nonzero temperature is made and expressions for partition functions in perturbation theory and nonperturbative background are explicitly written down.

The Feynman-Schwinger (world-line) representation in perturbative QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for an arbitrary $n$-point amplitude in QCD. In the standard perturbation theory the formalism allows to sum up the leading subseries, e.g. yielding double-logarithm Sudakov asymptotics for form factors. Correspondence with the standard perturbation theory is established and connection to the Bern-Kosower-Strassler method is illustrated.
