Baryon magnetic moments in the effective quark Lagrangian approach

An effective quark Lagrangian is derived from first principles through bilocal gluon field correlators. It is used to write down equations for baryons, containing both perturbative and nonperturbative fields. As a result one obtains magnetic moments of octet and decuplet baryons without introduction of constituent quark masses and using only string tension as an input. Magnetic moments come out on average in reasonable agreement with experiment, except for nucleons and $Σ^-$. The predictions for the proton and neutron are shown to be in close agreement with the empirical values once we choose the string tension such to yield the proper nucleon mass. Pionic corrections to the nucleon magnetic moments have been estimated. In particular, the total result of the two-body current contributions are found to be small. Inclusion of the anomalous magnetic moment contributions from pion and kaon loops leads to an improvement of the predictions.

Covariant model for proton-proton bremsstrahlung: Comparison with high-precision data

We compare a relativistic covariant model for proton-proton bremsstrahlung with high-quality data from KVI. The agreement in large parts of phase space is satisfactory. However, remarkably large discrepancies are observed for specific kinematic regions. These failures are shown to occur primarily when the final two-nucleon system has energies less than about 15 MeV.

Relativistic and non-relativistic studies of nuclear matter

Recently we showed that while the tensor force plays an important role in nuclear matter saturation in non-relativistic studies, it does not do so in relativistic studies. The reason behind this is the role of $M^*$, the sum of nucleon mass and its attractive self-energy in nuclear matter. Yet nonrelativistic calculations at a certain level of approximation are far less difficult than comparative relativistic calculation. Naturally the question arises if one can modify a nonrelativistic method, say, the lowest order Brueckner theory (LOBT), to reproduce approximately the results of a relativistic calculation. While a many body effect, the role of $M^*$ is intrinsically relativistic. It cannot be simulated by adding multi-body forces in a nonrelativistic calculation. Instead, we examine if adding a set of recipes to LOBT can be useful for the purpose. We point out that the differences in the results arise principally from two reasons - first, the role of $M^*$ and second, the disappearance in a relativistic treatment of the gap in the hole and particle energy spectra, present in LOBT. In this paper we show that LOBT, modified by {\it recipes} to remove these two reasons, generates results quite close to those of Dirac-Brueckner theory.

Magnetic string contribution to hadron dynamics in QCD

Dynamics of a light quark in the field of static source (heavy-light meson) is studied using the nonlinear Dirac equation, derived recently. Special attention is paid to the contribution of magnetic correlators and it is found that it yields a significant increase of string tension at intermediate distances. The spectrum of heavy-light mesons is computed with account of this contribution and compared to experimental and lattice data.

Pion-nucleon interaction in a covariant hadron-exchange model

We develop a relativistic covariant and unitary description of the pion-nucleon interaction in a hadron-exchange model. The model is based on the solution of a dimensionally reduced (quasipotential) Bethe-Salpeter equation for the partial-wave off-shell $πN$ scattering amplitudes with the potential consisting of the field-theoretical $s$- and $u$-channel nucleon, Roper, Delta, $D_{13}$, $S_{11}$ exchanges, and the $t$-channel $ρ$ and $σ$ meson exchanges. The contributions of the spin-3/2 Delta and $D_{13}$ resonances are treated within the Rarita-Schwinger formalism and different forms of the $πNΔ$ vertex are investigated. The free parameters of the model are fitted to the $πN$ phase-shift data of the KH80 and SM95 partial-wave analyses in the region up to 600 MeV pion kinetic energy. The resulting on-shell solution provides a good description of the $πN$ scattering lengths, as well as the energy behavior of the S, P, and D partial waves. The sensitivity of the phase shifts on various model-dependent effects is examined.

Radiative Corrections to Electron-Proton Scattering

The radiative corrections to elastic electron-proton scattering are analyzed in a hadronic model including the finite size of the nucleon. For initial electron energies above 8 GeV and large scattering angles, the proton vertex correction in this model increases by at least two percent the overall factor by which the one-photon exchange (Rosenbluth) cross section must be multiplied. The contribution of soft photon emission is calculated exactly. Comparison is made with the generally used expressions previously obtained by Mo and Tsai. Results are presented for some kinematics at high momentum transfer.

Transition from hadronic to partonic interactions for a composite spin-1/2 model of a nucleon

A simple model of a composite nucleon is developed in which a fermion and a boson, representing quark and diquark constituents of the nucleon, form a bound state owing to a contact interaction. Photon and pion couplings to the quark provide vertex functions for the photon and pion interactions with the composite nucleon. By a suitable choice of cutoff parameters of the model, realistic electromagnetic form factors are obtained. When a pseudoscalar pion-quark coupling is used, the pion-nucleon coupling is predominantly pseudovector. A virtual photopion amplitude is considered in which there are two types of contributions: hadronic contributions where the photon and pion interactions have an intervening propagator of the nucleon or its excited states, and contact-like contributions where the photon and pion interactions occur within a single vertex. At large Q, the contact-like contributions are dominant. The model nucleon exhibits scaling behavior in deep-inelastic scattering and the normalization of the parton distribution provides a rough normalization of the contact-like contributions. Calculations for the virtual photopion amplitude are performed using kinematics appropriate to its occurrence as a meson-exchange current in electron-deuteron scattering. The results show that the contact-like terms can dominate the meson-exchange current for Q > 1 GeV/c. There is a direct connection of the contact-like terms to the off-forward parton distributions of the model nucleon.

String formation and chiral symmetry breaking in the heavy-light quark-antiquark system in QCD

The effective quark Lagrangian is written for a light quark in the field of a static antiquark, explicitly containing field correlators as coefficient functions of products of quark operators. At large N_c the closed system of equations for the gauge-invariant quark Green's function in the field of static source is examined analytically. The formation of the string connecting the light quark to the static source is observed numerically. The scalar Lorentz nature of the resulting confinement is shown to hold for the considered case, implying chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting spectrum with and without perturbative gluon exchanges is obtained numerically and compared to the B and D meson masses and HQET.

Relativistic quasipotential equations with u-channel exchange interactions

Various quasipotential two-body scattering equations are studied at the one-loop level for the case of $t$- and $u$-channel exchange potentials. We find that the quasipotential equations devised to satisfy the one-body limit for the $t$-channel exchange potential can be in large disagreement with the field-theoretical prediction in the case of $u$-channel exchange interactions. Within the spectator model, the description of the $u$-channel case improves if another choice of the spectator particle is made. Since the appropriate choice of the spectator depends strongly on the type of interaction used, one faces a problem when both types of interaction are contained in the potential. Equal-time formulations are presented, which, in the light-heavy particle system corresponding to the mass situation of the $πN$ system, approximate in a reasonable way the field-theoretical result for both types of interactions.

Lorentz covariance of three-dimensional equations

We show how the invariance under the charge conjugation and CPT symmetry, present in the Bethe-Salpeter equation, is lost in the reduction to certain relativistic three-dimensional equations. This in particular leads to the breakdown of the standard Lorentz structure and renormalization procedures for the resulting single-particle propagators. We formulate the equal-time approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the form which manifestly satisfies the above symmetries, and apply it to the description of the pion-nucleon interaction in a dynamical model based on hadron exchanges. We also consider the one-body limit of various three-dimensional equations for the case of $t$- and $u$-channel one-particle-exchange potential.

Relativistic covariance of quasipotential equations

We argue that most of the relativistic 3-D (quasipotential) equations used in hadron physics are inconsistent with the discrete symmetries like charge conjugation and CPT, yielding an incorrect Lorentz structure for the calculated Green's functions. An exception to this is the equal time approximation to the Bethe-Salpeter equation. We present a covariant quasipotential model for the pion-nucleon interaction based on hadronic degrees of freedom and satisfying the full covariance.

A relativistic dynamical model for pi-N scattering

We present a unitary relativistic quasi-potential model for describing the low-energy pion-nucleon interaction, based on the equal time Bethe-Salpeter equation. It preserves the covariant structure of a relativistic spin 1/2 particle for the nucleon propagator, to be contrasted to other quasi-potential approximations.

Nuclear Matter Studies with Density-dependent Meson-Nucleon Coupling Constants

Due to the internal structure of the nucleon, we should expect, in general, that the effective meson nucleon parameters may change in nuclear medium. We study such changes by using a chiral confining model of the nucleon. We use density-dependent masses for all mesons except the pion. Within a Dirac-Brueckner analysis, based on the relativistic covariant structure of the NN amplitude, we show that the effect of such a density dependence in the NN interaction on the saturation properties of nuclear matter, while not large, is quite significant. Due to the density dependence of the $g_{σNN}$, as predicted by the chiral confining model, we find, in particular, a looping behavior of the binding energy at saturation as a function of the saturation density. A simple model is described, which exhibits looping and which is shown to be mainly caused by the presence of a peak in the density dependence of the medium modified $σN$ coupling constant at low density. The effect of density dependence of the coupling constants and the meson masses tends to improve the results for $E/A$ and density of nuclear matter at saturation. From the present study we see that the relationship between binding energy and saturation density may not be as universal as found in nonrelativistic studies and that more model dependence is exhibited once medium modifications of the basic nuclear interactions are considered.

O(4) Expansion of the ladder Bethe-Salpeter equation

The Bethe-Salpeter amplitude is expanded on a hyperspherical basis, thereby reducing the original 4-dimensional integral equation into an infinite set of coupled 1-dimensional ones. It is shown that this representation offers a highly accurate method to determine numerically the bound state solutions. For generic cases only a few hyperspherical waves are needed to achieve convergence, both for the ground state as well as for radially or orbitally excited states. The wave function is reconstructed for several cases and in particular it is shown that it becomes independent of the relative time in the nonrelativistic regime.

Nonperturbative study of generalized ladder graphs in a ϕ^2χtheory

The Feynman-Schwinger representation is used to construct scalar-scalar bound states for the set of all ladder and crossed-ladder graphs in a ϕ^2χtheory in (3+1) dimensions. The results are compared to those of the usual Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation and of several quasi-potential equations. Particularly for large couplings, the ladder predictions are seen to underestimate the binding energy significantly as compared to the generalized ladder case, whereas the solutions of the quasi-potential equations provide a better correspondence. Results for the calculated bound state wave functions are also presented.

Bound state solutions of scalar QED_{2+1} for zero photon mass

The Feynman-Schwinger representation is used to study the behavior of solutions of scalar QED in (2+1) dimensions. The limit of zero photon mass is seen to be smooth. The Bethe-Salpeter equation in the ladder approximation also exhibits this property. They clearly deviate from the behavior in the nonrelativistic limit. In a variational analysis we show that this difference can be attributed to retardation effects of relativistic origin.

Low energy theorem for scalar and vector interactions of a composite spin-1/2 system

Scalar and vector interactions, with the scalar interaction coupled to a composite spin-1/2 system so as to cause a shift of its mass, are shown to obey a low-energy theorem which guarantees that the second order interaction due to z-graphs is the same as for a point Dirac particle. Off-shell and contact interactions appropriate to the composite system cancel and this is verified in a model of a composite fermion. The result provides a justification for the use of the Dirac equation as it has been in relativistic nuclear scattering and mean field theories.
