Measurement of CP asymmetry in $B^0_s \rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays

We report on measurements of the time-dependent CP violating observables in $B^0_s\rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays using a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb$^{-1}$ of pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. We find the CP violating observables $C_f=0.53\pm0.25\pm0.04$, $A^{ΔΓ}_f=0.37\pm0.42\pm0.20$, $A^{ΔΓ}_{\bar{f}}=0.20\pm0.41\pm0.20$, $S_f=-1.09\pm0.33\pm0.08$, $S_{\bar{f}}=-0.36\pm0.34\pm0.08$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. Using these observables together with a recent measurement of the $B^0_s$ mixing phase $-2β_s$ leads to the first extraction of the CKM angle $γ$ from $B^0_s \rightarrow D^{\mp}_s K^{\pm}$ decays, finding $γ$ = (115$_{-43}^{+28}$)$^\circ$ modulo 180$^\circ$ at 68% CL, where the error contains both statistical and systematic uncertainties.

Measurement of the B0bar-B0 and Bsbar-Bs production asymmetries in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The B0bar-B0 and Bsbar-Bs production asymmetries, AP(B0) and AP(Bs), are measured by means of a time-dependent analysis of B0 -> J/ψK*0, B0 -> D- pi+ and Bs -> Ds- pi+ decays, using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1}, collected by LHCb in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the B0 and Bs mesons within the LHCb acceptance. The production asymmetries, integrated over pT and eta in the range 4 < pT< 30 GeV/c and 2.5<eta<4.5, are determined to be AP(B0) = (-0.35 +/- 0.76 +/- 0.28)% and AP(Bs) = (1.09 +/- 2.61 +/- 0.66)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Measuring a Cherenkov ring in the radio emission from air showers at 110-190 MHz with LOFAR

Measuring radio emission from air showers offers a novel way to determine properties of the primary cosmic rays such as their mass and energy. Theory predicts that relativistic time compression effects lead to a ring of amplified emission which starts to dominate the emission pattern for frequencies above ~100 MHz. In this article we present the first detailed measurements of this structure. Ring structures in the radio emission of air showers are measured with the LOFAR radio telescope in the frequency range of 110 - 190 MHz. These data are well described by CoREAS simulations. They clearly confirm the importance of including the index of refraction of air as a function of height. Furthermore, the presence of the Cherenkov ring offers the possibility for a geometrical measurement of the depth of shower maximum, which in turn depends on the mass of the primary particle.

Measurement of the lifetime of the $B_c^+$ meson using the $B_c^+\rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ decay mode

The difference in total widths between the $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons is measured using 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment in 7 and 8 TeV centre-of-mass energy proton-proton collisions at the LHC. Through the study of the time evolution of $B_c^+ \rightarrow J/ψπ^+$ and $B^+\rightarrow J/ψK^+$ decays, the width difference is measured to be $$ ΔΓ\equiv Γ_{B_c^+} - Γ_{B^+} = 4.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.07mm^{-1}c,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The known lifetime of the $B^+$ meson is used to convert this to a precise measurement of the $B_c^+$ lifetime, $$τ_{B_c^+} = 513.4 \pm 11.0 \pm 5.7fs,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase $ϕ_s$ in $\bar{B}^{0}_{s}\to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}$ decays

We present a measurement of the $CP$-violating weak mixing phase $ϕ_s$ using the decay $\bar{B}^{0}_{s}\to D_{s}^{+}D_{s}^{-}$ in a data sample corresponding to $3.0$ fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector in $pp$ collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. An analysis of the time evolution of the system, which does not constrain $|λ|=1$ to allow for the presence of $CP$ violation in decay, yields $ϕ_s = 0.02 \pm 0.17$ (stat) $\pm 0.02$ (syst) rad, $|λ| = 0.91^{+0.18}_{-0.15}$ (stat) $\pm0.02$ (syst). This result is consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

The Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. II. The seven stellar populations of NGC7089 (M2)

We present high-precision multi-band photometry for the globular cluster (GC) M2. We combine the analysis of the photometric data obtained from the Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic GCs GO-13297, with chemical abundances by Yong et al.(2014), and compare the photometry with models in order to analyze the multiple stellar sequences we identified in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD). We find three main stellar components, composed of metal-poor, metal-intermediate, and metal-rich stars (hereafter referred to as population A, B, and C, respectively). The components A and B include stars with different $s$-process element abundances. They host six sub-populations with different light-element abundances, and exhibit an internal variation in helium up to Delta Y~0.07 dex. In contrast with M22, another cluster characterized by the presence of populations with different metallicities, M2 contains a third stellar component, C, which shows neither evidence for sub-populations nor an internal spread in light-elements. Population C does not exhibit the typical photometric signatures that are associated with abundance variations of light elements produced by hydrogen burning at hot temperatures. We compare M2 with other GCs with intrinsic heavy-element variations and conclude that M2 resembles M22, but it includes an additional stellar component that makes it more similar to the central region of the Sagittarius galaxy, which hosts a GC (M54) and the nucleus of the Sagittarius galaxy itself.

Precision measurement of $CP$ violation in $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays

The time-dependent $CP$ asymmetry in $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays is measured using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0$fb$^{-1}$, collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$TeV. In a sample of 96 000 $B_s^0 \to J/ψK^+K^-$ decays, the $CP$-violating phase $ϕ_s$ is measured, as well as the decay widths $Γ_{L}$ and $Γ_{H}$ of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the $B_s^0-\bar{B}_s^0$ system. The values obtained are $ϕ_s = -0.058 \pm 0.049 \pm 0.006$ rad, $Γ_s \equiv (Γ_{L}+Γ_{H})/2 = 0.6603 \pm 0.0027 \pm 0.0015$ps$^{-1}$, and$ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_{L} - Γ_{H} = 0.0805 \pm 0.0091 \pm 0.0032$ps$^{-1}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. These are the most precise single measurements of those quantities to date. A combined analysis with $B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^-$ decays gives $ϕ_s = -0.010 \pm 0.039 $rad. All measurements are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. For the first time the phase $ϕ_s$ is measured independently for each polarisation state of the $K^+K^- $ system and shows no evidence for polarisation dependence.

The LOFAR long baseline snapshot calibrator survey

Aims. An efficient means of locating calibrator sources for International LOFAR is developed and used to determine the average density of usable calibrator sources on the sky for subarcsecond observations at 140 MHz. Methods. We used the multi-beaming capability of LOFAR to conduct a fast and computationally inexpensive survey with the full International LOFAR array. Sources were pre-selected on the basis of 325 MHz arcminute-scale flux density using existing catalogues. By observing 30 different sources in each of the 12 sets of pointings per hour, we were able to inspect 630 sources in two hours to determine if they possess a sufficiently bright compact component to be usable as LOFAR delay calibrators. Results. Over 40% of the observed sources are detected on multiple baselines between international stations and 86 are classified as satisfactory calibrators. We show that a flat low-frequency spectrum (from 74 to 325 MHz) is the best predictor of compactness at 140 MHz. We extrapolate from our sample to show that the density of calibrators on the sky that are sufficiently bright to calibrate dispersive and non-dispersive delays for the International LOFAR using existing methods is 1.0 per square degree. Conclusions. The observed density of satisfactory delay calibrator sources means that observations with International LOFAR should be possible at virtually any point in the sky, provided that a fast and efficient search using the methodology described here is conducted prior to the observation to identify the best calibrator.

Study of $η-η^{\prime}$ mixing from measurement of $B^0_{(s)} \rightarrow J/ψη^{(\prime)}$~decay rates

A study of $B^0$~and $B^0_s$ meson decays into $J/ψη$~and $J/ψη^{\prime}$ final states is performed using a data set of proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. The decay $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime}$ is observed for thefirst time. The following ratios of branching fractions are measured: $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (2.28\pm0.65\,(stat)\,\pm0.10\,(syst)\,\pm0.13\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ $$ \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0 \rightarrow J/ψη)}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη)} = (1.85\pm0.61\,(stat)\,\pm0.09\,(syst)\,\pm0.11\,(f_{s}/f_{d}))\times10^{-2},$$ where the third uncertainty is related to the present knowledge of $f_{s}/f_{d}$, the ratio between the probabilities for a $b$ quark to form a $B^0_s$ or $B^0$ meson. The branching fraction ratios are used to determine the parameters of $η-η^{\prime}$ meson mixing. In addition, the first evidence for the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime}$ is reported, and the relative branching fraction is measured, $$\frac{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow ψ(2S) η^{\prime})}{\mathcal{B}(B^0_s \rightarrow J/ψη^{\prime})} = (38.7\pm9.0\,(stat)\,\pm1.3\,(syst)\,\pm0.9(\mathcal{B}))\times10^{-2},$$ where the third uncertainty is due to the limited knowledge of the branching fractions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$~mesons.

Measurement of the $χ_b(3P)$ mass and of the relative rate of $χ_{b1}(1P)$ and $χ_{b2}(1P)$ production

The production of $χ_b$ mesons in proton-proton collisions is studied using a data sample collected by the LHCb detector, at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7$ and $8$ TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$. The $χ_b$ mesons are identified through their decays to $Υ(1S)γ$ and $Υ(2S)γ$ using photons that converted to $e^+e^-$ pairs in the detector. The relative prompt production rate of $χ_{b1}(1P)$ and $χ_{b2}(1P)$ mesons is measured as a function of the $Υ(1S)$ transverse momentum in the $χ_b$ rapidity range $2.0<y<4.5$. A precise measurement of the $χ_b(3P)$ mass is also performed. Assuming a mass splitting between the $χ_{b1}(3P)$ and the $χ_{b2}(3P)$ states of 10.5 MeV/$c^2$, the measured mass of the $χ_{b1}(3P)$ meson is $ m(χ_{b1}(3P))= 10515.7^{+2.2}_{-3.9}(stat) ^{+1.5}_{-2.1}(syst) MeV/c^2.$

Measurement of the CKM angle γusing B^\pm --> D K^\pm with D-->K_Sπ^+π^-, K_SK^+K^- decays

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K_S π^+π^-$ and $D \to K_S K^+ K^-$, is performed to measure the \CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$, which are sensitive to the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle $γ$. The analysis exploits a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0\invfb collected by the LHCb experiment. Measurements from CLEO-c of the variation of the strong-interaction phase of the $D$ decay over the Dalitz plot are used as inputs. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_+ = (-7.7 \pm 2.4 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-2}$, $x_- = (2.5 \pm 2.5 \pm 1.0 \pm 0.5) \times 10^{-2}$, $y_+ = (-2.2 \pm 2.5 \pm 0.4 \pm 1.0)\times 10^{-2}$, and $y_- = (7.5 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.5 \pm 1.4) \times 10^{-2}$. The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and that associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters. These are the most precise measurements of these observables and correspond to $γ= (62^{\,+15}_{\,-14})^\circ$, with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$, and $r_B = 0.080^{+ 0.019}_{-0.021}$, where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured $B$ decay amplitudes.

Hubble Space Telescope Proper Motion (HSTPROMO) Catalogs of Galactic Globular Clusters. I. Sample Selection, Data Reduction and NGC 7078 Results

We present the first study of high-precision internal proper motions (PMs) in a large sample of globular clusters, based on Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data obtained over the past decade with the ACS/WFC, ACS/HRC, and WFC3/UVIS instruments. We determine PMs for over 1.3 million stars in the central regions of 22 clusters, with a median number of ~60,000 stars per cluster. These PMs have the potential to significantly advance our understanding of the internal kinematics of globular clusters by extending past line-of-sight (LOS) velocity measurements to two- or three-dimensional velocities, lower stellar masses, and larger sample sizes. We describe the reduction pipeline that we developed to derive homogeneous PMs from the very heterogeneous archival data. We demonstrate the quality of the measurements through extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. We also discuss the PM errors introduced by various systematic effects, and the techniques that we have developed to correct or remove them to the extent possible. We provide in electronic form the catalog for NGC 7078 (M 15), which consists of 77,837 stars in the central 2.4 arcmin. We validate the catalog by comparison with existing PM measurements and LOS velocities, and use it to study the dependence of the velocity dispersion on radius, stellar magnitude (or mass) along the main sequence, and direction in the plane of the sky (radial/tangential). Subsequent papers in this series will explore a range of applications in globular-cluster science, and will also present the PM catalogs for the other sample clusters.

Dalitz plot analysis of $B_s^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^- π^+$ decays

The resonant substructure of $B_s^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^- π^+$ decays is studied with the Dalitz plot analysis technique. The study is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by LHCb. A structure at $m(\bar{D}^0 K^-) \approx 2.86 {\rm GeV}/c^2$ is found to be an admixture of spin-1 and spin-3 resonances. The masses and widths of these states and of the $D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ meson are measured, as are the complex amplitudes and fit fractions for all the $\bar{D}^0 K^-$ and $K^-π^+$ components included in the amplitude model. In addition, the $D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ resonance is confirmed to be spin-2.

Observation of overlapping spin-1 and spin-3 $\bar{D}^0 K^-$ resonances at mass $2.86 {\rm GeV}/c^2$

The resonant substructure of $B_s^0 \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^- π^+$ decays is studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collision data recorded by the LHCb detector. An excess at $m(\bar{D}^0 K^-) \approx 2.86 {\rm GeV}/c^2$ is found to be an admixture of spin-1 and spin-3 resonances. Therefore the $D^*_{sJ}(2860)^-$ state previously observed in inclusive $e^+e^- \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^- X$ and $pp \rightarrow \bar{D}^0 K^- X$ processes consists of at least two particles. This is the first observation of a heavy flavoured spin-3 resonance, and the first time that any spin-3 particle has been seen to be produced in $B$ decays. The masses and widths of the new states and of the $D^*_{s2}(2573)^-$ meson are measured, giving the most precise determinations to date.

Search for $CP$ violation using $T$-odd correlations in $D^0 \to K^+K^-π^+π^-$ decays

A search for $CP$ violation using $T$-odd correlations is performed using the four-body $D^0 \to K^+K^-π^+π^-$ decay, selected from semileptonic $B$ decays. The data sample corresponds to integrated luminosities of $1.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ and $2.0\,\text{fb}^{-1}$ recorded at the centre-of-mass energies of 7 TeV and 8 TeV, respectively. The $CP$-violating asymmetry $a_{CP}^{T\text{-odd}}$ is measured to be $(0.18\pm 0.29\text{(stat)}\pm 0.04\text{(syst)})\%$. Searches for $CP$ violation in different regions of phase space of the four-body decay, and as a function of the $D^0$ decay time, are also presented. No significant deviation from the $CP$ conservation hypothesis is found.

The Hubble Space Telescope UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters. I. Overview of the Project and Detection of Multiple Stellar Populations

In this paper we describe a new UV-initiative HST project (GO-13297) that will complement the existing F606W and F814W database of the ACS Globular Cluster (GC) Treasury by imaging most of its clusters through UV/blue WFC3/UVIS filters F275W, F336W and F438W. This "magic trio" of filters has shown an uncanny ability to disentangle and characterize multiple-population (MP) patterns in GCs in a way that is exquisitely sensitive to C, N, and O abundance variations. Combination of these passbands with those in the optical also gives the best leverage for measuring helium enrichment. The dozen clusters that had previously been observed in these bands exhibit a bewildering variety of MP patterns, and the new survey will map the full variance of the phenomenon. The ubiquity of multiple stellar generations in GCs has made the formation of these cornerstone objects more intriguing than ever; GC formation and the origin of their MPs have now become one and the same problem. In the present paper we will describe the data base and our data reduction strategy, as well as the uses we intend to make of the final photometry, astrometry, and proper motions. We will also present preliminary color-magnitude diagrams from the data so far collected. These diagrams also draw on data from GO-12605 and GO-12311, which served as a pilot project for the present GO-13297.

Study of $Υ$ production and cold nuclear matter effects in pPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5~\mathrm{TeV}$

Production of $Υ$ mesons in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5 \mathrm{TeV}$ is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.6 \mathrm{nb}^{-1}$. The $Υ$ mesons of transverse momenta up to $15 \mathrm{GeV}/c$ are reconstructed in the dimuon decay mode. The rapidity coverage in the centre-of-mass system is $1.5<y<4.0$ (forward region) and $-5.0<y<-2.5$ (backward region). The forward-backward production ratio and the nuclear modification factor for $Υ(1S)$ mesons are determined. The data are compatible with the predictions for a suppression of $Υ(1S)$ production with respect to proton-proton collisions in the forward region, and an enhancement in the backward region. The suppression is found to be smaller than in the case of prompt $J/ψ$ mesons.

First observations of the rare decays $B^+-> K^+π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+->ϕK^+μ^+μ^-$

First observations of the rare decays $B^+\rightarrow K^+π^+π^-μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+\rightarrow ϕK^+μ^+μ^-$ are presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\,{fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8\mathrm{\,TeV}$. The branching fractions of the decays are \begin{eqnarray*} \mathcal{B}(B^+\rightarrow K^+π^+π^-μ^+μ^-) &=& (4.36\,^{+0.29}_{-0.27}\,\mathrm{(stat)}\pm 0.21\,\mathrm{(syst)}\pm0.18\,\mathrm{(norm)})\times10^{-7},\\ \mathcal{B}(B^+\rightarrowϕK^+μ^+μ^-) &=& (0.82 \,^{+0.19}_{-0.17}\,\mathrm{(stat)}\,^{+0.10}_{-0.04}\,\mathrm{(syst)}\pm0.27\,\mathrm{(norm)}) \times10^{-7},\end{eqnarray*} where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty on the branching fractions of the normalisation modes. A measurement of the differential branching fraction in bins of the invariant mass squared of the dimuon system is also presented for the decay $B^+\rightarrow K^+π^+π^-μ^{+}μ^{-}$.
