Observation of $Z$ production in proton-lead collisions at LHCb

The first observation of $Z$ boson production in proton-lead collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per proton-nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5~\text{TeV}$ is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $1.6~\text{nb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $Z$ candidates are reconstructed from pairs of oppositely charged muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 and transverse momenta above $20~\text{GeV}/c$. The invariant dimuon mass is restricted to the range $60-120~\text{GeV}/c^2$. The $Z$ production cross-section is measured to be \begin{eqnarray*} σ_{Z\toμ^+μ^-}(\text{fwd})&=&13.5^{+5.4}_{-4.0}\text{(stat.)}\pm1.2\text{(syst.)}~\text{nb} \end{eqnarray*} in the direction of the proton beam and \begin{eqnarray*} σ_{Z\toμ^+μ^-}(\text{bwd}) & =&10.7^{+8.4}_{-5.1}\text{(stat.)}\pm1.0\text{(syst.)}~\text{nb} \end{eqnarray*} in the direction of the lead beam, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Measurement of $CP$ violation and constraints on the CKM angle $γ$ in $B^{\pm}\rightarrow D K^{\pm}$ with $D \rightarrow K_S^0 π^+ π^-$ decays

A model-dependent amplitude analysis of $B^{\pm} \rightarrow D K^{\pm}$ with $D \rightarrow K_S^0 π^+ π^-$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1$ fb$^{-1}$, recorded by LHCb at a centre-of-mass energy of $7$ TeV in $2011$. Values of the $CP$ violation observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$, which are sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$, are measured to be \begin{align*} x_- &= +0.027 \pm 0.044 ^{+0.010}_{-0.008} \pm 0.001, \\ y_- &= +0.013 \pm 0.048 ^{+0.009}_{-0.007} \pm 0.003, \\ x_+ &= -0.084 \pm 0.045 \pm 0.009 \pm 0.005, \\ y_+ &= -0.032 \pm 0.048 ^{+0.010}_{-0.009} \pm 0.008, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third arises from the uncertainty of the $D \rightarrow K_S^0 π^+ π^-$ amplitude model. The value of $γ$ is determined to be $(84^{+49}_{-42})^\circ$, including all sources of uncertainty. Neutral $D$ meson mixing is found to have negligible effect.

Measurement of $C\!P$ asymmetries in the decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^{+} μ^+ μ^-$

The direct $C\!P$ asymmetries of the decays $B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ and $B^+ \rightarrow K^{+} μ^+ μ^-$ are measured using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0$\mbox{fb}^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The respective control modes $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ and $B^+ \rightarrow J/ψK^{+}$ are used to account for detection and production asymmetries. The measurements are made in several intervals of $μ^+ μ^-$ invariant mass squared, with the $ϕ(1020)$ and charmonium resonance regions excluded. Under the hypothesis of zero $C\!P$ asymmetry in the control modes, the average values of the asymmetries are \begin{align} {\cal A}_{C\!P}(B^0 \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-) &= -0.035 \pm 0.024 \pm 0.003, \cr {\cal A}_{C\!P}(B^+ \rightarrow K^{+} μ^+ μ^-) &= \phantom{-}0.012 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.001, \end{align} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are due to systematic effects. Both measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of small $C\!P$ asymmetry in these decays.

Measurement of CP violation in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays

A measurement of the decay time dependent CP-violating asymmetry in $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays is presented, along with measurements of the $T$-odd triple-product asymmetries. In this decay channel, the CP-violating weak phase arises from the interference between $B_s^0$-$\bar{B}_s^0$ mixing and the loop-induced decay amplitude. Using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0\, fb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector, a signal yield of approximately 4000 $B_s^0 \to ϕϕ$ decays is obtained. The CP-violating phase is measured to be ${ϕ_s =-0.17\pm0.15\mathrm{\,(stat)}\pm0.03\mathrm{\,(syst)}}$ rad. The triple-product asymmetries are measured to be ${A_U=-0.003\pm0.017\mathrm{\,(stat)}\pm0.006\mathrm{\,(syst)}}$ and ${A_V=-0.017\pm0.017\mathrm{\,(stat)}\pm0.006\mathrm{\,(syst)}}$. Results are consistent with the hypothesis of CP conservation.

Observation of charmonium pairs produced exclusively in $pp$ collisions

A search is performed for the central exclusive production of pairs of charmonia produced in proton-proton collisions. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3{\rm\ fb}^{-1}$ collected at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, $J/ψJ/ψ$ and $J/ψψ(2S)$ pairs are observed, which have been produced in the absence of any other activity inside the LHCb acceptance that is sensitive to charged particles in the pseudorapidity ranges $(-3.5,-1.5)$ and $(1.5,5.0)$. Searches are also performed for pairs of P-wave charmonia and limits are set on their production. The cross-sections for these processes, where the dimeson system has a rapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, are measured to be $$ \begin{array}{rl} σ^{J/ψJ/ψ} &= 58\pm10{(\rm stat)} \pm 6{(\rm syst)} {\rm\ pb} , \\ σ^{J/ψψ(2S)} &= 63 ^{+27}_{-18}{(\rm stat)}\pm 10{(\rm syst)} {\rm\ pb} , \\ σ^{ψ(2S)ψ(2S)} &< 237 {\rm\ pb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c0}χ_{c0}} &< 69 {\rm\ nb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c1}χ_{c1}} &< 45 {\rm\ pb}, \\ σ^{χ_{c2}χ_{c2}} &< 141 {\rm\ pb}, \\ \end{array} $$ where the upper limits are set at the 90% confidence level. The measured $J/ψJ/ψ$ and $J/ψψ(2S)$ cross-sections are consistent with theoretical expectations.

LOFAR low-band antenna observations of the 3C295 and Bootes fields: source counts and ultra-steep spectrum sources

We present LOFAR Low Band observations of the Bootes and 3C295 fields. Our images made at 34, 46, and 62 MHz reach noise levels of 12, 8, and 5 mJy beam$^{-1}$, making them the deepest images ever obtained in this frequency range. In total, we detect between 300 and 400 sources in each of these images, covering an area of 17 to 52 deg$^{2}$. From the observations we derive Euclidean-normalized differential source counts. The 62 MHz source counts agree with previous GMRT 153 MHz and VLA 74 MHz differential source counts, scaling with a spectral index of $-0.7$. We find that a spectral index scaling of $-0.5$ is required to match up the LOFAR 34 MHz source counts. This result is also in agreement with source counts from the 38 MHz 8C survey, indicating that the average spectral index of radio sources flattens towards lower frequencies. We also find evidence for spectral flattening using the individual flux measurements of sources between 34 and 1400 MHz and by calculating the spectral index averaged over the source population. To select ultra-steep spectrum ($α< -1.1$) radio sources, that could be associated with massive high redshift radio galaxies, we compute spectral indices between 62 MHz, 153 MHz and 1.4 GHz for sources in the Boötes field. We cross-correlate these radio sources with optical and infrared catalogues and fit the spectral energy distribution to obtain photometric redshifts. We find that most of these ultra-steep spectrum sources are located in the $ 0.7 \lesssim z \lesssim 2.5$ range.

Study of the kinematic dependences of $Λ_b^0$ production in $pp$ collisions and a measurement of the $Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-$ branching fraction

The kinematic dependences of the relative production rates, $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$, of $Λ_b^0$ baryons and $\bar{B}^0$ mesons are measured using $Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^+ π^-$ decays. The measurements use proton-proton collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb$^{-1}$ at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, recorded in the forward region with the LHCb experiment. The relative production rates are observed to depend on the transverse momentum, $p_T$, and pseudorapidity, $η$, of the beauty hadron, in the studied kinematic region $1.5 < p_T < 40$ GeV/$c$ and $2 < η< 5$. Using a previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ in semileptonic decays, the branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(Λ_b^0 \rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^-) = \Big( 4.30 \pm 0.03 \,\, ^{+0.12}_{-0.11} \pm 0.26 \pm 0.21 \Big) \times 10^{-3}$ is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, the third is from the previous LHCb measurement of $f_{Λ_b^0}/f_d$ and the fourth is due to the $\bar{B}^0 \rightarrow D^+ π^-$ branching fraction. This is the most precise measurement of a $Λ_b^0$ branching fraction to date.

First measurement of the charge asymmetry in beauty-quark pair production at a hadron collider

The difference in the angular distributions between beauty quarks and antiquarks, referred to as the charge asymmetry, is measured for the first time in $b\bar{b}$ pair production at a hadron collider. The data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb$^{-1}$ collected at 7TeV center-of-mass energy in proton-proton collisions with the LHCb detector. The measurement is performed in three regions of the invariant mass of the $b\bar{b}$ system. The results obtained are: \begin{eqnarray} A_{C}^{b\bar{b}}(40 < M_{b\bar{b}} < 75\,\rm{GeV/c^2}) &=& 0.4 \pm 0.4(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.3(\rm{syst})\%\newline A_{C}^{b\bar{b}}(75 < M_{b\bar{b}} < 105\,\rm{GeV/c^2}) &=& 2.0 \pm 0.9(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6(\rm{syst})\%\newline A_{C}^{b\bar{b}}(M_{b\bar{b}} > 105\,\rm{GeV/c^2}) &=&1.6 \pm 1.7(\rm{stat}) \pm 0.6(\rm{syst})\% \end{eqnarray} where $A_{C}^{b\bar{b}}$ is defined as the asymmetry in the difference in rapidity between jets formed from the beauty quark and antiquark. The beauty jets are required to satisfy $2<η<4$, $E_{\rm T} > 20$GeV, and have an opening angle in the transverse plane $Δϕ>2.6$rad. These measurements are consistent with the predictions of the Standard Model.

Effective lifetime measurements in the $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$, $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ and $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow π^{+}K^{-}$ decays

Measurements of the effective lifetimes in the $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$, $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}$ and $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow π^{+}K^{-}$ decays are presented using $1.0~\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The analysis uses a data-driven approach to correct for the decay time acceptance. The measured effective lifetimes are $τ_{B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}}$ = $1.407~\pm~0.016~\pm~0.007~\mathrm{ps}$, $τ_{B^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-}}$ = $1.524~\pm~0.011~\pm~0.004~\mathrm{ps}$, $τ_{B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow π^{+}K^{-}}$ = $1.60~\pm~0.06~\pm~0.01~\mathrm{ps}$. This is the most precise determination to date of the effective lifetime in the $B_{s}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}K^{-}$ decay and provides constraints on contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model to the $B_{s}^{0}$ mixing phase and the width difference $ΔΓ_{s}$.

Observation of the $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ decay

Decays of the form $B^{0}_{(s)}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} h^+ h^{\left(\prime\right) -}$ ($h^{(\prime)} = K, π$) are searched for in proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0 \, {\rm fb}^{-1}$ recorded with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{\pm} π^{\mp}$ decay is reported, with significance in excess of 10 standard deviations. The $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} K^{+} K^{-}$ decay is also observed for the first time. The branching fraction of $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ is determined, to significantly better precision than previous measurements, using $B^0 \rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0}$ as a normalisation channel. Branching fractions and upper limits of the other $B^{0}_{(s)}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} h^+ h^{\left(\prime\right) -}$ modes are determined relative to that of the $B^{0}\rightarrow J/ψK_{\rm S}^{0} π^{+} π^{-}$ decay.

First observation of a baryonic $B_c^+$ decay

A baryonic decay of the $B_c^+$ meson, $B_c^+\to J/ψp\overline{p}π^+$, is observed for the first time, with a significance of $7.3$ standard deviations, in $pp$ collision data collected with the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $3.0$ fb$^{-1}$ taken at center-of-mass energies of $7$ and $8$ $\mathrm{TeV}$. With the $B_c^+\to J/ψπ^+$ decay as normalization channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be \begin{equation*} \frac{\mathcal{B}(B_c^+\to J/ψp\overline{p}π^+)}{\mathcal{B}(B_c^+\to J/ψπ^+)} = 0.143^{\,+\,0.039}_{\,-\,0.034}\,(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.013\,(\mathrm{syst}). \end{equation*} The mass of the $B_c^+$ meson is determined as $M(B_c^+)=6274.0\pm1.8\,(\mathrm{stat})\pm0.4\,(\mathrm{syst})\,\mathrm{MeV}/c^2$, using the $B_c^+\to J/ψp\overline{p}π^+$ channel.

The LOFAR Pilot Surveys for Pulsars and Fast Radio Transients

We have conducted two pilot surveys for radio pulsars and fast transients with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) around 140 MHz and here report on the first low-frequency fast-radio burst limit and the discovery of two new pulsars. The first survey, the LOFAR Pilot Pulsar Survey (LPPS), observed a large fraction of the northern sky, ~1.4 x 10^4 sq. deg, with 1-hr dwell times. Each observation covered ~75 sq. deg using 7 independent fields formed by incoherently summing the high-band antenna fields. The second pilot survey, the LOFAR Tied-Array Survey (LOTAS), spanned ~600 sq. deg, with roughly a 5-fold increase in sensitivity compared with LPPS. Using a coherent sum of the 6 LOFAR "Superterp" stations, we formed 19 tied-array beams, together covering 4 sq. deg per pointing. From LPPS we derive a limit on the occurrence, at 142 MHz, of dispersed radio bursts of < 150 /day/sky, for bursts brighter than S > 107 Jy for the narrowest searched burst duration of 0.66 ms. In LPPS, we re-detected 65 previously known pulsars. LOTAS discovered two pulsars, the first with LOFAR or any digital aperture array. LOTAS also re-detected 27 previously known pulsars. These pilot studies show that LOFAR can efficiently carry out all-sky surveys for pulsars and fast transients, and they set the stage for further surveying efforts using LOFAR and the planned low-frequency component of the Square Kilometer Array.

Observation of the $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp π^-$ decay

The first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp π^-$ is reported using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3 $\rm fb^{-1}$. A prominent signal is observed and the branching fraction relative to the decay mode $Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp K^-$ is determined to be $$ \frac{{\cal B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp π^-)}{{\cal B}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp K^-)}=0.0824\pm0.0025\:(\text{stat})\pm0.0042\:(\text{syst}). $$ A search for direct CP violation is performed. The difference in the CP asymmetries between these two decays is found to be $$ {\cal A}_{CP}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp π^-)-{\cal A}_{CP}(Λ_b^0\rightarrow J/ψp K^-)=(+5.7\pm 2.4\:(\text{stat})\pm1.2\:(\text{syst}))\%, $$ which is compatible with CP symmetry at the $2.2σ$ level.

Study of $χ_{b}$ meson production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8TeV and observation of the decay $χ_{b}\rightarrow Υ(3S) γ$

A study of $χ_{b}$ meson production at LHCb is performed on proton-proton collision data, corresponding to 3.0fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7$ and 8TeV. The fraction of $Υ(nS)$ mesons originating from $χ_{b}$ decays is measured as a function of the $Υ$ transverse momentum in the rapidity range $2.0 < y^Υ < 4.5$. The radiative transition of the $χ_{b}(3P)$ meson to $Υ(3S)$ is observed for the first time. The $χ_{b1}(3P)$ mass is determined to be $$m(χ_{b1}(3P)) = 10\,511.3 \pm 1.7 \pm 2.5 MeV/c^2,$$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Measurement of the $B_s^0$ meson lifetime in $D_s^+π^-$ decays

We present a measurement of the ratio of the Bs meson lifetime, in the flavor-specific decay to $D_s^+π^-$, to that of the B0 meson. The pp collision data used correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1/fb, collected with the LHCb detector, at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Combining our measured value of 1.010 +/- 0.010 +/- 0.008 for this ratio with the known lifetime, we determine the flavor-specific Bs lifetime to be tau(Bs) = 1.535 +/- 0.015 +/- 0.014 ps, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. This is the most precise measurement to date, and is consistent with previous measurements and theoretical predictions.

LOFAR tied-array imaging of Type III solar radio bursts

The Sun is an active source of radio emission which is often associated with energetic phenomena such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs). At low radio frequencies (<100 MHz), the Sun has not been imaged extensively because of the instrumental limitations of previous radio telescopes. Here, the combined high spatial, spectral and temporal resolution of the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) was used to study solar Type III radio bursts at 30-90 MHz and their association with CMEs. The Sun was imaged with 126 simultaneous tied-array beams within 5 solar radii of the solar centre. This method offers benefits over standard interferometric imaging since each beam produces high temporal (83 ms) and spectral resolution (12.5 kHz) dynamic spectra at an array of spatial locations centred on the Sun. LOFAR's standard interferometric output is currently limited to one image per second. Over a period of 30 minutes, multiple Type III radio bursts were observed, a number of which were found to be located at high altitudes (4 solar radii from the solar center at 30 MHz) and to have non-radial trajectories. These bursts occurred at altitudes in excess of values predicted by 1D radial electron density models. The non-radial high altitude Type III bursts were found to be associated with the expanding flank of a CME. The CME may have compressed neighbouring streamer plasma producing larger electron densities at high altitudes, while the non-radial burst trajectories can be explained by the deflection of radial magnetic fields as the CME expanded in the low corona.

Lunar occultation of the diffuse radio sky: LOFAR measurements between 35 and 80 MHz

We present radio observations of the Moon between $35$ and $80$ MHz to demonstrate a novel technique of interferometrically measuring large-scale diffuse emission extending far beyond the primary beam (global signal) for the first time. In particular, we show that (i) the Moon appears as a negative-flux source at frequencies $35<ν<80$ MHz since it is `colder' than the diffuse Galactic background it occults, (ii) using the (negative) flux of the lunar disc, we can reconstruct the spectrum of the diffuse Galactic emission with the lunar thermal emission as a reference, and (iii) that reflected RFI (radio-frequency interference) is concentrated at the center of the lunar disc due to specular nature of reflection, and can be independently measured. Our RFI measurements show that (i) Moon-based Cosmic Dawn experiments must design for an Earth-isolation of better than $80$ dB to achieve an RFI temperature $<1$ mK, (ii) Moon-reflected RFI contributes to a dipole temperature less than $20$ mK for Earth-based Cosmic Dawn experiments, (iii) man-made satellite-reflected RFI temperature exceeds $20$ mK if the aggregate cross section of visible satellites exceeds $80$ m$^2$ at $800$ km height, or $5$ m$^2$ at $400$ km height. Currently, our diffuse background spectrum is limited by sidelobe confusion on short baselines (10-15% level). Further refinement of our technique may yield constraints on the redshifted global $21$-cm signal from Cosmic Dawn ($40>z>12$) and the Epoch of Reionization ($12>z>5$).
