Two-particle photoemission from strongly correlated systems: A dynamical-mean field approach

We study theoretically the simultaneous, photo-induced two-particle excitations of strongly correlated systems on the basis of the Hubbard model. Under certain conditions specified in this work, the corre- sponding transition probability is related to the two-particle spectral function which we calculate using three different methods: the dynamical-mean field theory combined with quantum Monte Carlo (DMFT- QMC) technique, the first order perturbation theory and the ladder approximations. The results are analyzed and compared for systems at the verge of the metal-insulator transitions. The dependencies on the electronic correlation strength and on doping are explored. In addition, the account for the orbital degeneracy allows an insight into the influence of interband correlations on the two particle excitations. A suitable experimental realization is discussed.

Light-induced valley currents and magnetization in graphene rings

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics in a mesoscopic graphene ring excited by picoseconds shaped electromagnetic pulses. We predict an ultrafast buildup of charge polarization, currents and orbital magnetization. Applying the light pulses identified here, non-equilibrium valley currents are generated in a graphene ring threaded by a stationary magnetic flux. We predict a finite graphene ring magnetization even for a vanishing charge current; the magnetization emerges due to the light-induced difference of the valley populations.

Stochastic dynamics and control of a driven nonlinear spin chain: the role of Arnold diffusion

We study a chain of non-linear, interacting spins driven by a static and a time-dependent magnetic field. The aim is to identify the conditions for the locally and temporally controlled spin switching. Analytical and full numerical calculations show the possibility of stochastic control if the underlying semi-classical dynamics is chaotic. This is achievable by tuning the external field parameters according to the method described in this paper. We show analytically for a finite spin chain that Arnold diffusion is the underlying mechanism for the present stochastic control. Quantum mechanically we consider the regime where the classical dynamics is regular or chaotic. For the latter we utilize the random matrix theory. The efficiency and the stability of the non-equilibrium quantum spin-states are quantified by the time-dependence of the Bargmann angle related to the geometric phases of the states.

Dynamic switching of magnetization in driven magnetic molecules

We study the magnetization dynamics of a molecular magnet driven by static and variable magnetic fields within a semiclassical treatment. The underling analyzes is valid in a regime, when the energy is definitely lower than the anisotropy barrier, but still a substantial number of states are excited. We find the phase space to contain a separatrix line. Solutions far from it are oscillatory whereas the separatrix solution is of a soliton type. States near the separatrix are extremely sensitive to small perturbations, a fact which we utilize for dynamically induced magnetization switching.

Current-induced interactions of multiple domain walls in magnetic quantum wires

We show that an applied charge current in a magnetic nanowire containing domain walls (DWs) results in an interaction between DWs mediated by spin-dependent interferences of the scattered carriers. The energy and torque associated with this interaction show an oscillatory behaviour as a function of the mutual DWs orientations and separations, thus affecting the DWs' arrangements and shapes. Based on the derived DWs interaction energy and torque we calculate DW dynamics and uncover potential applications of interacting DWs as a tunable nano-mechanical oscillator. We also discuss the effect of impurities on the DW interaction.

Local control of ultrafast dynamics in magnetic nanoparticles

Using the local control theory we derive analytical expressions for magnetic field pulses that steer the magnetization of a monodomain magnetic nanoparticle to a predefined state. Finite-temperature full numerical simulations confirm the analytical results and show that a magnetization switching or freezing is achievable within few precessional periods and that the scheme is exploitable for fast thermal switching.

Transport Properties of an Interacting Quantum Dot with a Non-Uniform Magnetization

We study the influence of the non-homogeneity of a magnetization field on the behaviour of interacting electrons in a quantum dot. In particular we investigate the magnetotransport properties when the dot is weakly coupled to two ferromagnetic leads. We take into account the interactions in the quantum dot non-perturbatively. For a magnetization which varies slowly on the scale of the Fermi wave length, the non-homogeneity effect is described by a gauge potential that can be treated perturbatively.

Polarized light bursts from kicked quantum rings

Non-equilibrium quantum rings emit circular polarized subterahertz radiation with a polarization degree controllable on nano- to picosecond time scales. This we conclude using a theory developed here for the time-dependent detection of the circular polarization of polychromatic radiations, valid for time scales comparable to the reciprocal of characteristic emission frequencies. The theory is applied to driven quantum rings whereby the influence of radiative and non-radiative processes on the properties of the emitted light is incorporated.

Role of a spin-flip scatterer in a magnetized Luttinger liquid

We study the spin-dependent scattering of charge carriers in a magnetized one dimensional Luttinger liquid from a localized non-homogeneous magnetic field, which might be brought about by the stray field of magnetic tip near a uniform liquid, or by a transverse domain wall (DW) between two oppositely magnetized liquids. From a renormalization group treatment of the electron interactions we deduce scaling equations for the transmission and reflection amplitudes as the bandwidth is progressively reduced to an energy scale set by the temperature. The repulsive interactions dictate two possible zero temperature insulator fixed points: one in which electrons are reflected in the same spin channel and another where the electron spin is reversed upon reflection. In the latter case, a finite spin current emerges in the absence of a charge current at zero temperature and the Friedel oscillations form a transverse spiraling spin density. Adding a purely potential scattering term has no effect on the fixed points of a uniformly magnetized liquid. For a DW we find that the introduction of potential scattering stabilizes the spin-flip insulator phase even if the single-particle spin-flip scattering produced by the DW is arbitrarily weak. The potential can be induced externally, e.g. by a local gate voltage or a constriction, providing a means for controlling the transport properties of the wire.

Nonequilibrium charge dynamics of light-driven rings threaded by a magnetic flux

We study theoretically the charge polarization and the charge current dynamics of a mesoscopic ring driven by short asymmetric electromagnetic pulses and threaded by an external static magnetic flux. It is shown that the pulse-induced charge polarization and the associated light-emission is controllable by tuning the external magnetic flux. Applying two mutually perpendicular pulses triggers a charge current in the ring. The interplay between this nonequilibrium and the persistent currents is investigated and the conditions under which the pulses stop the persistent current are identified.

Single-particle states in spherical Si/SiO$_2$ quantum dots

We calculate ground and excited electron and hole levels in spherical Si quantum dots inside SiO$_2$ in a multiband effective mass approximation. Luttinger Hamiltonian is used for holes and the strong anisotropy of the conduction electron effective mass in Si is taken into account. As boundary conditions for electron and hole wave functions we use continuity of the wave functions and the velocity density at the boundary of the quantum dots.

Transmission of correlated electrons through sharp domain walls in magnetic nanowires: a renormalization group approach

The transmission of correlated electrons through a domain wall in a ferromagnetic one dimensional system is studied theoretically in the limit of a domain wall width smaller or comparable to the electron Fermi wavelength. The domain wall gives rise to both potential and spin dependent scattering of the charge carriers. Using a poor man's renormalization group approach for the electron-electron interactions, we obtain the low temperature behavior of the reflection and transmission coefficients. The results show that the low-temperature conductance is governed by the electron correlations, which may suppress charge transport without suppressing spin current. The results may account for a huge magnetoresistance associated with a domain wall in ballistic nanocontacs.

Revivals, collapses and magnetic-pulse generation in quantum rings

Using a microscopic theory based on the density matrix formalism we investigate quantum revivals and collapses of the charge polarization and charge current dynamics in mesoscopic rings driven by short asymmetric electromagnetic pulses. The collapsed state is utilized for sub-picosecond switching of the current and associated magnetization, enabling thus the generation of pulsed magnetic fields with a tunable time structure and shape asymmetry which provides a new tool to study ultrafast spin-dynamics and ratchet-based effects.

Role of electron correlations in transport through domain walls in magnetic nanowires

The transmission of correlated electrons through a domain wall in ferromagnetic quasi-one-dimensional systems is studied theoretically in the case when the domain wall width is comparable with the Fermi wavelength of the charge carriers. The wall gives rise to both potential and spin dependent scattering. Using a poor man's renormalization group approach, we obtain scaling equations for the scattering amplitudes. For repulsive interactions, the wall is shown to reflect all incident electrons at the zero temperature fixed points. In one of the fixed points the wall additionally flips the spin of all incident electrons, generating a finite spin current without associated charge current.

Tunable conductance of magnetic nanowires with structured domain walls

We show that in a magnetic nanowire with double magnetic domain walls, quantum interference results in spin-split quasistationary states localized mainly between the domain walls. Spin-flip-assisted transmission through the domain structure increases strongly when these size-quantized states are tuned on resonance with the Fermi energy, e.g. upon varying the distance between the domain walls which results in resonance-type peaks of the wire conductance. This novel phenomena is shown to be utilizable to manipulate the spin density in the domain vicinity. The domain walls parameters are readily controllable and the predicted effect is hence exploitable in spintronic devices.

Combining the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the non-equilibrium Green's function formalism, we investigate the negative differential resistance effect in organic spintronics at low temperature and interprete it with a self-doping picture. A giant negative magnetoresistance exceeding 300% is theoretically predicted as the results of the negative differential resistance effects.

Current-induced motion of a domain wall in magnetic nanowires

The dynamics of current-induced motion of a magnetic domain wall in a quasi-one-dimensional ferromagnet with both easy-axis and easy-plane anisotropy, is studied. We pay a special attention to the case of a sharp domain wall, and calculate the spin torque created by the electric current. The torque has two components, one of which is acting as a driving force for the motion of the domain wall while the other distorts its shape, forcing thus the magnetic moments to deviate from the easy plane.

Magnetoresistance of a semiconducting magnetic wire with domain wall

We investigate theoretically the influence of the spin-orbit interaction of Rashba type on the magnetoresistance of a semiconducting ferromagnetic nanostructure with a laterally constrained domain wall. The domain wall is assumed sharp (on the scale of the Fermi wave length of the charge carriers). It is shown that the magnetoresistance in such a case can be considerably large, which is in a qualitative agreement with recent experimental observations. It is also shown that spin-orbit interaction may result in an increase of the magnetoresistance. The role of localization corrections is also briefly discussed.
