Hybrid Microwave Radiation Patterns for High-Fidelity Quantum Gates with Trapped Ions

We present a method that combines continuous and pulsed microwave radiation patterns to achieve robust interactions among hyperfine trapped ions placed in a magnetic field gradient. More specifically, our scheme displays continuous microwave drivings with modulated phases, phase flips, and $π$ pulses. This leads to high-fidelity entangling gates which are resilient against magnetic field fluctuations, changes on the microwave amplitudes, and crosstalk effects. Our protocol runs with arbitrary values of microwave power, which includes the technologically relevant case of low microwave intensities. We demonstrate the performance of our method with detailed numerical simulations that take into account the main sources of decoherence.

Selective Hybrid Spin Interactions with Low Radiation Power

We present a protocol for designing appropriately extended $π$ pulses that achieves tunable, thus selective, electron-nuclear spin interactions with low-driving radiation power. Our method is general since it can be applied to different quantum sensor devices such as nitrogen vacancy centers or silicon vacancy centers. Furthermore, it can be directly incorporated in commonly used stroboscopic dynamical decoupling techniques to achieve enhanced nuclear selectivity and control, which demonstrates its flexibility.

Spin-boson model as a simulator of non-Markovian multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings models

The paradigmatic spin-boson model considers a spin degree of freedom interacting with an environment typically constituted by a continuum of bosonic modes. This ubiquitous model is of relevance in a number of physical systems where, in general, one has neither control over the bosonic modes, nor the ability to tune distinct interaction mechanisms. Despite this apparent lack of control, we present a suitable transformation that approximately maps the spin-boson dynamics into that of a tunable multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings model undergoing dissipation. Interestingly, the latter model describes the coherent interaction between a spin and a single bosonic mode via the simultaneous exchange of n bosons per spin excitation. Resorting to the so-called reaction coordinate method, we identify a relevant collective bosonic mode in the environment which is then used to generate multiphoton interactions following the proposed theoretical framework. Moreover, we show that spin-boson models featuring structured environments can lead into non-Markovian multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings dynamics. We discuss the validity of the proposed method depending on the parameters and analyze its performance, which is supported by numerical simulations. In this manner, the spin-boson model serves as a good analog quantum simulator for the inspection and realization of multiphoton Jaynes-Cummings models as well as the interplay of non-Markovian effects, and thus, as a simulator of light-matter systems with tunable interaction mechanisms.

Modulated Continuous Wave Control for Energy-efficient Electron-nuclear Spin Coupling

We develop energy efficient, continuous microwave schemes to couple electron and nuclear spins, using phase or amplitude modulation to bridge their frequency difference. These controls have promising applications in biological systems, where microwave power should be limited, as well as in situations with high Larmor frequencies due to large magnetic fields and nuclear magnetic moments. These include nanoscale NMR where high magnetic fields achieves enhanced thermal nuclear polarisation and larger chemical shifts. Our controls are also suitable for quantum information processors and nuclear polarisation schemes.

Shaped Pulses for Energy Efficient High-Field NMR at the Nanoscale

The realisation of optically detected magnetic resonance via nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond faces challenges at high magnetic fields which include growing energy consumption of control pulses as well as decreasing sensitivities. Here we address these challenges with the design of shaped pulses in microwave control sequences that achieve orders magnitude reductions in energy consumption and concomitant increases in sensitivity when compared to standard top-hat microwave pulses. The method proposed here is general and can be applied to any quantum sensor subjected to pulsed control sequences.

Soft Quantum Control for Highly Selective Interactions among Joint Quantum Systems

We propose a quantum control scheme aimed at interacting systems that gives rise to highly selective coupling among their near-to-resonance constituents. Our protocol implements temporal control of the interaction strength, switching it on and off again adiabatically. This soft temporal modulation significantly suppresses off-resonant contributions in the interactions. Among the applications of our method we show that it allows us to perform an efficient rotating-wave approximation in a wide parameter regime, the elimination of side peaks in quantum sensing experiments, and selective high-fidelity entanglement gates on nuclear spins with close frequencies. We apply our theory to nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond and demonstrate the possibility for the detection of weak electron-nuclear coupling under the presence of strong perturbations.

Pulsed Dynamical Decoupling for Fast and Robust Two-Qubit Gates on Trapped Ions

We propose a pulsed dynamical decoupling protocol as the generator of tunable, fast, and robust quantum phase gates between two microwave-driven trapped ion hyperfine qubits. The protocol consists of sequences of $π$-pulses acting on ions that are oriented along an externally applied magnetic field gradient. In contrast to existing approaches, in our design the two vibrational modes of the ion chain cooperate under the influence of the external microwave driving to achieve significantly increased gate speeds. Our scheme is robust against the dominant noise sources, which are errors on the magnetic field and microwave pulse intensities, as well as motional heating, predicting two-qubit gates with fidelities above $99.9\%$ in tens of microseconds.

Arbitrary Nuclear Spin Gates in Diamond Mediated by a NV-center Electron Spin

We propose a protocol that achieves arbitrary N-qubit interactions between nuclear spins and that can measure directly nuclear many-body correlators by appropriately making the nuclear spins interact with a nitrogen vacancy (NV) center electron spin. The method takes advantage of recently introduced dynamical decoupling techniques and demonstrates that action on the electron spin is sufficient to fully exploit nuclear spins as robust quantum registers. Our protocol is general, being applicable to other nuclear spin based platforms with electronic spin defects acting as mediators as the case of silicon carbide.

Proposal for enhanced resolution in nanoscale NMR: quantum sensing with pulses of finite duration

The nitrogen vacancy (NV) color center in diamond is an enormously important platform for the development of quantum sensors, including for single spin and single molecule NMR. Detection of weak single-spin signals is greatly enhanced by repeated sequences of microwave pulses; in these dynamical decoupling (DD) techniques, the key control parameters swept in the experiment are the time intervals, $τ$, between pulses. Here we show that, in fact, the pulse duration offers a powerful additional control parameter. While previously, a non-negligible pulse-width has been considered simply a source of experimental error, here we elucidate the underlying quantum dynamics: we identify a landscape of quantum-state crossings which are usually closed (inactive) but may be controllably activated (opened) by adjusting the pulse-width from zero. We identify these crossings with recently observed but unexpected dips (so called spurious dips) seen in the quantum coherence of the NV spin. With this new understanding, both the position and strength of these sharp features may be accurately controlled; they co-exist with the usual broader coherence dips of short-duration microwave pulses, but their sharpness allows for higher resolution spectroscopy with quantum diamond sensors, or their analogues.

Algorithmic quantum simulation of memory effects

We propose a method for the algorithmic quantum simulation of memory effects described by integrodifferential evolution equations. It consists in the systematic use of perturbation theory techniques and a Markovian quantum simulator. Our method aims to efficiently simulate both completely positive and nonpositive dynamics without the requirement of engineering non-Markovian environments. Finally, we find that small error bounds can be reached with polynomially scaling resources, evaluated as the time required for the simulation.

Pulse-phase control for spectral disambiguation in quantum sensing protocols

We present a method to identify spurious signals generated by finite-width pulses in quantum sensing experiments and apply it to recently proposed dynamical decoupling sequences for accurate spectral interpretation. We first study the origin of these fake resonances and quantify their behavior in a situation that involves the measurement of a classical magnetic field. Here we show that a change of the initial phase of the sensor or, equivalently, of the decoupling pulses leads to oscillations in the spurious signal intensity while the real resonances remain intact. Finally we extend our results to the quantum regime for the unambiguous detection of remote nuclear spins by utilization of a nitrogen vacancy sensor in diamond.

Noise-resilient Quantum Computing with a Nitrogen-Vacancy Center and Nuclear Spins

Selective control of qubits in a quantum register for the purposes of quantum information processing represents a critical challenge for dense spin ensembles in solid state systems. Here we present a protocol that achieves a complete set of selective single and two-qubit gates on nuclear spins in such an ensemble in diamond facilitated by a nearby NV center. The protocol suppresses internuclear interactions as well as unwanted coupling between the NV center and other spins of the ensemble to achieve quantum gate fidelities well exceeding 99% . Notably, our method can be applied to weakly coupled, distant, spins and therefore represents a scalable procedure that exploits the exceptional properties of nuclear spins in diamond as robust quantum memories.

Robust Dynamical Decoupling Sequences for Individual Nuclear Spin Addressing

We propose the use of non-equally spaced decoupling pulses for high-resolution selective addressing of nuclear spins by a quantum sensor. The analytical model of the basic operating principle is supplemented by detailed numerical studies that demonstrate the high degree of selectivity and the robustness against static and dynamic control field errors of this scheme. We exemplify our protocol with an NV center-based sensor to demonstrate that it enables the identification of individual nuclear spins that form part of a large spin ensemble.

Quantum Simulation of Dissipative Processes without Reservoir Engineering

We present a quantum algorithm to simulate general finite dimensional Lindblad master equations without the requirement of engineering the system-environment interactions. The proposed method is able to simulate both Markovian and non-Markovian quantum dynamics. It consists in the quantum computation of the dissipative corrections to the unitary evolution of the system of interest, via the reconstruction of the response functions associated with the Lindblad operators. Our approach is equally applicable to dynamics generated by effectively non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We confirm the quality of our method providing specific error bounds that quantify itss accuracy.

Pushing 1D CCSNe to explosions: model and SN 1987A

We report on a method, PUSH, for triggering core-collapse supernova explosions of massive stars in spherical symmetry. We explore basic explosion properties and calibrate PUSH such that the observables of SN1987A are reproduced. Our simulations are based on the general relativistic hydrodynamics code AGILE combined with the detailed neutrino transport scheme IDSA for electron neutrinos and ALS for the muon and tau neutrinos. To trigger explosions in the otherwise non-exploding simulations, we rely on the neutrino-driven mechanism. The PUSH method locally increases the energy deposition in the gain region through energy deposition by the heavy neutrino flavors. Our setup allows us to model the explosion for several seconds after core bounce. We explore the progenitor range 18-21M$_{\odot}$. Our studies reveal a distinction between high compactness (HC) and low compactness (LC) progenitor models, where LC models tend to explore earlier, with a lower explosion energy, and with a lower remnant mass. HC models are needed to obtain explosion energies around 1 Bethe, as observed for SN1987A. However, all the models with sufficiently high explosion energy overproduce $^{56}$Ni. We conclude that fallback is needed to reproduce the observed nucleosynthesis yields. The nucleosynthesis yields of $^{57-58}$Ni depend sensitively on the electron fraction and on the location of the mass cut with respect to the initial shell structure of the progenitor star. We identify a progenitor and a suitable set of PUSH parameters that fit the explosion properties of SN1987A when assuming 0.1M$_{\odot}$ of fallback. We predict a neutron star with a gravitational mass of 1.50M$_{\odot}$. We find correlations between explosion properties and the compactness of the progenitor model in the explored progenitors. However, a more complete analysis will require the exploration of a larger set of progenitors with PUSH.

Fermion-Fermion Scattering in Quantum Field Theory with Superconducting Circuits

We propose an analog-digital quantum simulation of fermion-fermion scattering mediated by a continuum of bosonic modes within a circuit quantum electrodynamics scenario. This quantum technology naturally provides strong coupling of superconducting qubits with a continuum of electromagnetic modes in an open transmission line. In this way, we propose qubits to efficiently simulate fermionic modes via digital techniques, while we consider the continuum complexity of an open transmission line to simulate the continuum complexity of bosonic modes in quantum field theories. Therefore, we believe that the complexity-simulating-complexity concept should become a leading paradigm in any effort towards scalable quantum simulations.

Efficient Quantum Algorithm for Computing n-time Correlation Functions

We propose a method for computing n-time correlation functions of arbitrary spinorial, fermionic, and bosonic operators, consisting of an efficient quantum algorithm that encodes these correlations in an initially added ancillary qubit for probe and control tasks. For spinorial and fermionic systems, the reconstruction of arbitrary n-time correlation functions requires the measurement of two ancilla observables, while for bosonic variables time derivatives of the same observables are needed. Finally, we provide examples applicable to different quantum platforms in the frame of the linear response theory.
