New determination of double-beta-decay properties in 48Ca: high-precision Q-value measurement and improved nuclear matrix element calculations

We report a direct measurement of the Q-value of the neutrinoless double-beta-decay candidate 48Ca at the TITAN Penning-trap mass spectrometer, with the result that Q = 4267.98(32) keV. We measured the masses of both the mother and daughter nuclides, and in the latter case found a 1 keV deviation from the literature value. In addition to the Q-value, we also present results of a new calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta-decay nuclear matrix element of 48Ca. Using diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory to second order to account for physics outside the valence space, we constructed an effective shell-model double-beta-decay operator, which increased the nuclear matrix element by about 75% compared with that produced by the bare operator. The new Q-value and matrix element strengthen the case for a 48Ca double-beta-decay experiment.

Role of three-nucleon forces and many-body processes in nuclear pairing

We present microscopic valence-shell calculations of pairing gaps in the calcium isotopes, focusing on the role of three-nucleon (3N) forces and many-body processes. In most cases, we find a reduction in pairing strength when the leading chiral 3N forces are included, compared to results with low-momentum two-nucleon (NN) interactions only. This is in agreement with a recent energy density functional study. At the NN level, calculations that include particle-particle and hole-hole ladder contributions lead to smaller pairing gaps compared with experiment. When particle-hole contributions as well as the normal-ordered one- and two-body parts of 3N forces are consistently included to third order, we find reasonable agreement with experimental three-point mass differences. This highlights the important role of 3N forces and many-body processes for pairing in nuclei. Finally, we relate pairing gaps to the evolution of nuclear structure in neutron-rich calcium isotopes and study the predictions for the 2+ excitation energies, in particular for 54Ca.

Chiral three-nucleon forces and bound excited states in neutron-rich oxygen isotopes

We study the spectra of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes based on chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions. First, we benchmark our many-body approach by comparing ground-state energies to coupled-cluster results for the same two-nucleon interaction, with overall good agreement. We then calculate bound excited states in 21,22,23O, focusing on the role of three-nucleon forces, in the standard sd shell and an extended sdf7/2p3/2 valence space. Chiral three-nucleon forces provide important one- and two-body contributions between valence neutrons. We find that both these contributions and an extended valence space are necessary to reproduce key signatures of novel shell evolution, such as the N = 14 magic number and the low-lying states in 21O and 23O, which are too compressed with two-nucleon interactions only. For the extended space calculations, this presents first work based on nuclear forces without adjustments. Future work is needed and open questions are discussed.

Three-body forces and proton-rich nuclei

We present the first study of three-nucleon (3N) forces for proton-rich nuclei along the N=8 and N=20 isotones. Our results for the ground-state energies and proton separation energies are in very good agreement with experiment where available, and with the empirical isobaric multiplet mass equation. We predict the spectra for all N=8 and N=20 isotones to the proton dripline, which agree well with experiment for 18Ne, 19Na, 20Mg and 42Ti. In all other cases, we provide first predictions based on nuclear forces. Our results are also very promising for studying isospin symmetry breaking in medium-mass nuclei based on chiral effective field theory.

New precision mass measurements of neutron-rich calcium and potassium isotopes and three-nucleon forces

We present precision Penning-trap mass measurements of neutron-rich calcium and potassium isotopes in the vicinity of neutron number N=32. Using the TITAN system the mass of $^{51}$K was measured for the first time, and the precision of the $^{51,52}$Ca mass values were improved significantly. The new mass values show a dramatic increase of the binding energy compared to those reported in the atomic mass evaluation. In particular, $^{52}$Ca is more bound by 1.74 MeV, and the behavior with neutron number deviates substantially from the tabulated values. An increased binding was predicted recently based on calculations that include three-nucleon (3N) forces. We present a comparison to improved calculations, which agree remarkably with the evolution of masses with neutron number, making neutron-rich calcium isotopes an exciting region to probe 3N forces at neutron-rich extremes.

Fermionic-bosonic couplings in a weakly-deformed odd-mass nucleus, $^{93}_{41}$Nb

A comprehensive decay scheme of $^{93}$Nb below 2 MeV has been constructed from information obtained with the $^{93}$Nb(n,n$^\prime$$γ$) and $^{94}$Zr(p,2n$γ$$γ$)$^{93}$Nb reactions. Branching ratios, lifetimes, transition multipolarities and spin assignments have been determined. From $M1$ and $E2$ strengths, fermionic-bosonic excitations of isoscalar and isovector character have been identified from the weak coupling $\pi1g_{9/2}$$\otimes$$^{92}_{40}$Zr and $\pi2p_{1/2}^{-1}$$\otimes$$^{94}_{42}$Mo configurations. A microscopic interpretation of such excitations is attained from shell-model calculations using low-momentum effective interactions.

Tensor interaction constraints from beta decay recoil spin asymmetry of trapped atoms

We have measured the angular distribution of recoiling daughter nuclei emitted from the Gamow-Teller $β$ decay of spin-polarized $^{80}$Rb. The asymmetry of this distribution vanishes to lowest order in the Standard Model (SM) in pure Gamow-Teller decays, producing an observable very sensitive to new interactions. We measure the non-SM contribution to the asymmetry to be $A_{T}$= 0.015 $\pm$ 0.029 (stat) $\pm$ 0.019 (syst), consistent with the SM prediction. We constrain higher-order SM corrections using the measured momentum dependence of the asymmetry, and their remaining uncertainty dominates the systematic error. Future progress in determining the weak magnetism term theoretically or experimentally would reduce the final errors. We describe the resulting constraints on fundamental 4-Fermi tensor interactions.

Three-nucleon interactions: A frontier in nuclear structure

Three-nucleon interactions are a frontier in understanding and predicting the structure of strongly-interacting matter in laboratory nuclei and in the cosmos. We present results and discuss the status of first calculations with microscopic three-nucleon interactions beyond light nuclei. This coherent effort is possible due to advances based on effective field theory and renormalization group methods in nuclear physics.

Shell model description of the 14C dating beta decay with Brown-Rho-scaled NN interactions

We present shell model calculations for the beta-decay of the 14C ground state to the 14N ground state, treating the states of the A=14 multiplet as two 0p holes in an 16O core. We employ low-momentum nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions derived from the realistic Bonn-B potential and find that the Gamow-Teller matrix element is too large to describe the known lifetime. By using a modified version of this potential that incorporates the effects of Brown-Rho scaling medium modifications, we find that the GT matrix element vanishes for a nuclear density around 85% that of nuclear matter. We find that the splitting between the (J,T)=(1+,0) and (J,T)=(0+,1) states in 14N is improved using the medium-modified Bonn-B potential and that the transition strengths from excited states of 14C to the 14N ground state are compatible with recent experiments.

Microscopic Restoration of Proton-Neutron Mixed Symmetry in Weakly Collective Nuclei

Starting from the microscopic low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction V{low k}, we present the first systematic shell model study of magnetic moments and magnetic dipole transition strengths of the basic low-energy one-quadrupole phonon excitations in nearly-spherical nuclei. Studying in particular the even-even N=52 isotones from 92Zr to 100Cd, we find the predicted evolution of the predominantly proton-neutron non-symmetric state reveals a restoration of collective proton-neutron mixed-symmetry structure near mid-shell. This provides the first explanation for the existence of pronounced collective mixed-symmetry structures in weakly-collective nuclei.

Identification of mixed-symmetry states in an odd-mass nearly-spherical nucleus

The low-spin structure of 93Nb has been studied using the (n,n' gamma) reaction at neutron energies ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 MeV and the 94Zr(p,2n gamma)93Nb reaction at bombarding energies from 11.5 to 19 MeV. States at 1779.7 and 1840.6 keV, respectively, are proposed as mixed-symmetry states associated with the coupling of a proton hole in the p_1/2 orbit to the 2+_1,ms state in 94Mo. These assignments are derived from the observed M1 and E2 transition strengths to the symmetric one-phonon states, energy systematics, spins and parities, and comparison with shell model calculations.
