Dependence of the Superconducting Transition Temperature of MgB2 on Pressure to 20 GPa

The dependence of Tc on nearly hydrostatic pressure has been measured for an isotopically pure (11B) MgB2 sample in a helium-loaded diamond-anvil-cell to nearly 20 GPa. Tc decreases monotonically with pressure from 39.1 K at ambient pressure to 20.9 K at 19.2 GPa. The initial dependence is the same as that obtained earlier (dTc/dP = -1.11(2) K/GPa) on the same sample in a He-gas apparatus to 0.7 GPa. The observed pressure dependence Tc(P) to 20 GPa can be readily described in terms of simple lattice stiffening within standard phonon-mediated BCS superconductivity.

The Dependence of Tc on Hydrostatic Pressure in Superconducting MgB2

The dependence of Tc on hydrostatic (He-gas) pressure has been determined to 0.7 GPa. We find that Tc decreases linearly and reversibly under pressure at the rate dTc/dP = -1.11 +- 0.02 K/GPa. These studies were carried out on the same sample used in earlier structural studies under He-gas pressure which yielded the bulk modulus B = 147.2 +- 0.7 GPa. The value of the logarithmic volume derivative of Tc is thus accurately determined, dlnTc/dlnV = +4.16 +- 0.08, allowing quantitative comparison with theory. The present results support the emerging picture that MgB2 is a BCS superconductor with electron-phonon pairing interaction.

The reduced total isotope effect and its implications on the nature of superconductivity in MgB2

The recent discovery of superconductivity at ~39 K in MgB2, by Nagamatsu et al. establishes this simple binary compound as having the highest bulk superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of any non-copper-oxide material. Much of the initial research has focused on whether MgB2 is a conventional BCS, electron-phonon mediated superconductor, and, if it is, why Tc is so high. Isotope effect measurements, in which the atom masses are manipulated to systematically change the phonon frequencies, are one of the fundamental experimental tests of electron-phonon mediated superconductivity. One would expect the total isotope effect coefficient, i.e. the sum of both the Mg and B coefficients, to be 1/2 for a high- Tc, phonon mediated, simple sp orbital superconductor like MgB2. We find a value of 0.32(1), much reduced from the canonical BCS value of 0.5. This requires large values of l (electron-phonon coupling constant) and m* (repulsive electron-electron pseudopotential) to account for the high Tc and, thus, constrains any theoretical model for superconductivity in MgB2.

Specific Heat of Mg ^{11}B_2

Measurements of the specific heat of Mg ^{11}B_2 (MgB2), from 1 to 50 K, in magnetic fields to 9 T, give the Debye temperature, $Θ$ = 1050 K, the coefficient of the normal-state electron contribution, $γ_n$ = 2.6 mJ mol^{-1} K^{-2}, and a discontinuity in the zero-field specific heat of 133 mJ mol^{-1} K^{-1} at $T_c$ = 38.7 K. The estimated value of the electron-phonon coupling parameter, $λ$ = 0.62, could account for the observed $T_c$ only if the important phonon frequencies are unusually high relative to $Θ$. At low $T$, there is a strongly field-dependent feature that suggests the existence of a second energy gap, about four times smaller than the major gap.

Lattice Properties of MgB2 versus Temperature and Pressure

We have determined the structural properties of the superconducting compound MgB2 as a function of temperature from 11 K to 297 K and as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to 0.62 GPa using neutron powder diffraction. This compound, when compared to other diborides with the same structure, is characterized by unusually large anisotropies of both the thermal expansion and compressibility, with the c-axis responses being substantially larger in both cases. We speculate that the comparatively weaker metal-boron bonding in MgB2, manifest by these lattice responses, is important for establishing the structural features that give rise to high Tc superconductivity in this structure type.

Magnetic and electronic structures of superconducting RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$

The coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in RuSr$_2$GdCu$_2$O$_8$ was reported both from experiments (by Tallon et. al.) and first-principles calculations (by Pickett et. al.). Here we report that our first-principles full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) calculations, employing the precise crystal structure with structural distortions (i.e., RuO$_6$ rotations) determined by neutron diffraction, demonstrate that antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru moments is energetically favored over the previously proposed ferromagnetic ordering. Our results are consistent with recently performed magnetic neutron diffraction experiments (Lynn et. al). Ru $t_{2g}$ states, which are responsible for the magnetism, have only a very small interaction with Cu $e_g$ states, which results in a small exchange splitting of these states. The Fermi surface, characterized by strongly hybridized $dpσ$ orbitals, has nesting features similar to those in the two-dimensional high $T_c$ cuprate superconductors.

Relaxation Effects in the Transition Temperature of Superconducting HgBa2CuO4+delta

In previous studies on a number of under- and overdoped high temperature superconductors, including YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+δ}, the transition temperature T_c has been found to change with time in a manner which depends on the sample's detailed temperature and pressure history. This relaxation behavior in T_c is believed to originate from rearrangements within the oxygen sublattice. In the present high-pressure studies on HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+δ} to 0.8 GPa we find clear evidence for weak relaxation effects in strongly under- and overdoped samples ($T_c\simeq 40 - 50 K$) with an activation energy $E_{A}(1 bar) \simeq 0.8 - 0.9 eV$. For overdoped HgBa_{2}CuO_{4+δ} E_{A} increases under pressure more rapidly than previously observed for YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.41}, yielding an activation volume of +11 \pm 5 cm^{3}; the dependence of T_c on pressure is markedly nonlinear, an anomalous result for high-T_c superconductors in the present pressure range, giving evidence for a change in the electronic and/or structural properties near 0.4 GPa.

Lattice Displacements Above Tc in the Layered Manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7

Neutron diffraction data presented in this paper demonstrates the relevance of lattice displacement above TC, in our understanding of the evolution of the crystal structure with temperature in the layered CMR manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7. The anomalous temperature behavior of thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) in La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 strongly suggests that it arises from lattice displacements and correlates directly with anomalies in the displacement parameters of the O- and Mn-atoms and Mn-O bond lengths. From our measurements, the insulator - metal transition can be described as a transition from a high temperature state with disordered Mn-O bond lengths to a low temperature state with a more uniform distribution on Mn-O bonds. These observations are in agreement with polaronic charge transport above TC in the perovskite manganites; as electron hopping is responsible for bond disorder above TC, below the transition where eg carries are delocalized, any lattice displacements are uniformly averaged.
