Exchange interactions and magnetic phases of transition metal oxides: benchmarking advanced ab initio methods

The magnetic properties of the transition metal monoxides MnO and NiO are investigated at equilibrium and under pressure via several advanced first-principles methods coupled with Heisenberg Hamiltonian MonteCarlo. The comparative first-principles analysis involves two promising beyond-local density functionals approaches, namely the hybrid density functional theory and the recently developed variational pseudo-self-interaction correction method, implemented with both plane-wave and atomic-orbital basis sets. The advanced functionals deliver a very satisfying rendition, curing the main drawbacks of the local functionals and improving over many other previous theoretical predictions. Furthermore, and most importantly, they convincingly demonstrate a degree of internal consistency, despite differences emerging due to methodological details (e.g. plane waves vs. atomic orbitals)

Exceptionally strong magnetism in 4d perovskites RTcO3 (R=Ca,Sr,Ba)

The evolution of the magnetic ordering temperature of the 4d3 perovskites RTcO3 (R=Ca,Sr,Ba) and its relation with its electronic and structural properties has been studied by means of hybrid density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulations. When compared to the most widely studied 3d perovskites the large spatial extent of the 4d shells and their relatively strong hybridization with oxygen weaken the tendency to form Jahn-Teller like orbital ordering. This strengthens the superexchange interaction. The resulting insulating G-type antiferromagnetic ground state is characterized by large superexchange coupling constants (26-35 meV) and Neel temperatures (750-1200 K). These monotonically increase as a function of the R ionic radius due to the progressive enhancement of the volume and the associated decrease of the cooperative rotation of the TcO6 octahedra.

A New Measurement of the $π^0$ Radiative Decay Width

High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for $π^0$ photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb, have been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel calorimeter. The ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width was extracted by fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is $Γ{(π^0 \to γγ)} = 7.82 \pm 0.14 ~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.17 ~({\rm syst.}) ~{\rm eV}$. With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is consistent with current theoretical predictions.

Mode Coupling in a Tapered Slow Light Waveguide

Metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and negative permeability (also called left-handed materials) open new avenues to achieving unprecedented physical properties and functionality unattainable with naturally occurring materials. It has been predicted that a metamaterial slab waveguide can slow down light significantly (even to zero velocity) as the thickness of the core layer approaches a critical thickness. Here we show that coupling between the forward and backward modes becomes significant near the critical thickness due to the good matching of the wavevectors and modal profiles of the two modes. Physical explanation and impact of this coupling are given.

Directional field-induced metallization of quasi-one-dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$

We report a detailed magnetotransport study of the highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional oxide Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ whose in-chain electrical resistivity diverges below a temperature $T_{\rm min} \sim$ 25 K. For $T < T_{\rm min}$, a magnetic field applied parallel to the conducting chain induces a large negative magnetoresistance and ultimately, the recovery of a metallic state. We show evidence that this insulator/metal crossover is a consequence of field-induced suppression of a density-wave gap in a highly one-dimensional conductor. At the highest fields studied, there is evidence for the possible emergence of a novel superconducting state with an onset temperature $T_c >$ 10 K.

A semiconductor exciton memory cell based on a single quantum nanostructure

We demonstrate storage of excitons in a single nanostructure, a self-assembled Quantum Post. After generation electron and holes forming the exciton are separated by an electric field towards opposite ends of the Quantum Post inhibiting their radiative recombination. After a defined time such spatially indirect excitons are reconverted to optically active direct excitons by switching the electric field. The emitted light of the stored exciton is detected in the limit of a single nanostructure and storage times exceeding 30 msec are demonstrated. We identify a slow tunneling of the electron out of the Quantum Post as the dominant loss mechanism by comparing the field dependent temporal decay of the storage signal to models for this process and radiative losses.

Growth and optical properties of self-assembled InGaAs Quantum Posts

We demonstrate a method to grow height controlled, dislocation-free InGaAs quantum posts (QPs) on GaAs by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) which is confirmed by structural investigations. The optical properties are compared to realistic 8-band k.p calculations of the electronic structure which fully account for strain and the structural properties of the QP. Using QPs embedded in n-i-p junctions we find wide range tunability of the interband spectrum and giant static dipole moments.

Localized steady-state domain wall oscillators

We predict a spatially localized magnetic domain wall oscillator upon the application of an external magnetic field and a DC electric current. The amplitude and frequency of the oscillator can be controlled by the field and/or the current. The resulting oscillator could be used as an effective microwave source for information storage application.

Switching speed distribution of spin-torque-induced magnetic reversal

The switching probability of a single-domain ferromagnet under spin-current excitation is evaluated using the Fokker-Planck equation(FPE). In the case of uniaxial anisotropy, the FPE reduces to an ordinary differential equation in which the lowest eigenvalue $λ_1$ determines the slowest switching events. We have calculated $λ_1$ by using both analytical and numerical methods. It is found that the previous model based on thermally distributed initial magnetization states \cite{Sun1} can be accurately justified in some useful limiting conditions.

The case for the bulk nature of the spectroscopic Luttinger liquid signatures observed in angle resolved photoemission of Li0.9Mo6O17

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on quasi-one dimensional Li0.9Mo6O17 using photon energy 500 eV. Measured band dispersions are in agreement with those from both low photon energy measurements and band structure calculations. The momentum integrated ARPES spectrum is well fit by the finite temperature Luttinger liquid (LL)spectral function, with an anomalous exponent 0.6 that is the same within experimental uncertainty as the value found with photon energy 30 eV. These identical findings at both low and high photon energies are entirely consistent with reasoning based on the crystal structure, that the quasi-one dimensional chains lie two layers below the cleavage plane so that the observed spectroscopic LL behavior of Li0.9Mo6O17 is a bulk property.

New Luttinger liquid physics from photoemission on Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$

Temperature dependent high resolution photoemission spectra of quasi-1 dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ evince a strong renormalization of its Luttinger liquid density-of-states anomalous exponent. We trace this new effect to interacting charge neutral critical modes that emerge naturally from the two-band nature of the material. Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ is shown thereby to be a paradigm material that is capable of revealing new Luttinger physics.

Effects of current on vortex and transverse domain walls

By using the spin torque model in ferromagnets, we compare the response of vortex and transverse walls to the electrical current. For a defect-free sample and a small applied current, the steady state wall mobility is independent of the wall structure. In the presence of defects, the minimum current required to overcome the wall pinning potential is much smaller for the vortex wall than for the transverse wall. During the wall motion, the vortex wall tends to transform to the transverse wall. We construct a phase diagram for the wall mobility and the wall transformation driven by the current.

Effects of spin current on ferromagnets

When a spin-polarized current flows through a ferromagnet, the local magnetization receives a spin torque. Two consequences of this spin torque are studied. First, the uniformly magnetized ferromagnet becomes unstable if a sufficiently large current is applied. The characteristics of the instability include spin wave generation and magnetization chaos. Second, the spin torque has profound effects on the structure and dynamics of the magnetic domain wall. A detail analysis on the domain wall mass, kinetic energy and wall depinning threshold is given.

Goldstone-Mode Phonon Dynamics in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

We have measured the polarized Raman scattering spectra of Cd2Re2O7, the first superconducting pyrochlore, as a function of temperature. For temperatures below the cubic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition (SPT) at 200K, a peak with B1 symmetry develops at zero frequency with divergent intensity. We identify this peak as the first observation of the Goldstone phonon in a crystalline solid. The Goldstone phonon is a collective excitation that exists due to the breaking of the continuous symmetry with the SPT. Its emergence coincides with that of a Raman-active soft mode. The order parameter for both features derives from an unstable doubly-degenerate vibration (with Eu symmetry) of the O1 atoms which drives the SPT.

Ultrafast and Large Third-order Nonlinear Optical Properties of CdS Nanocrystals in Polymeric Film

We report the ultrafast and large third-order nonlinear optical properties of CdS nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in a polymeric film. The CdS NCs of 2-nm radius are synthesized by an ion exchange method and highly concentrated in the two layers near the surfaces of the polymeric film. The two-photon absorption coefficient and the optical Kerr coefficient are measured with laser pulses of 250-fs duration at 800-nm wavelength. The one-photon and two-photon figures of merit are determined to be 3.1 and 1.3, respectively, at irradiance of 2 GW/cm2. The observed nonlinearities have a recovery time of ~ 1 ps. The two-photon-generated free carrier effects have also been observed and discussed. These results demonstrate that CdS NCs embedded in polymeric film are a promising candidate for optical switching applications.

Two-dimensional structures of ferroelectric domain inversion in LiNbO3 by direct electron beam lithography

We report on the fabrication of domain-reversed structures in LiNbO3 by means of direct electron beam lithography at room temperature without any static bias. The LiNbO3 crystals were chemically etched after the exposure of electron beam and then, the patterns of domain inversion were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). In our experiment, an interesting phenomenon occurred when the electron beam wrote a one-dimensional (1-D) grating on the negative c-face: a two-dimensional (2-D) dotted array was observed on the positive c- face, which is significant for its potential to produce 2-D and three-dimensional photonic crystals. Furthermore, we also obtained 2-D ferroelectric domain inversion in the whole LiNbO3 crystal by writing the 2-D square pattern on the negative c-face. Such a structure may be utilized to fabricate 2-D nonlinear photonic crystal. AFM demonstrates that a 2-D domain-reversed structure has been achieved not only on the negative c-face of the crystal, but also across the whole thickness of the crystal.

Excitonic nonlinear absorption in CdS nanocrystals studied using Z-scan technique

Irradiance dependence of excitonic nonlinear absorption in Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals has been studied by using Z-scan method with nanosecond laser pulses. The wavelength dependence of nonlinear absorption has also been measured near the excitonic transition of 1S(e)-1S3/2(h). We observe the saturable absorption, which can be described by a third-order and a fifth-order nonlinear process for both 3.0-nm-sized and 2.3-nm-sized CdS nanocrystals. The experimental results show that the excitonic nonlinear absorption of CdS nanocrystals is greatly enhanced with decreasing particle size. A two-level model is utilized to explain both irradiance and wavelength dependence of the excitonic nonlinearity.

Luttinger liquid ARPES spectra from samples of Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ grown by the temperature gradient flux technique

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy line shapes measured for quasi-one-dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ samples grown by a temperature gradient flux technique are found to show Luttinger liquid behavior, consistent with all previous data by us and other workers obtained from samples grown by the electrolyte reduction technique. This result eliminates the sample growth method as a possible origin of considerable differences in photoemission data reported in previous studies of Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$.
