Non-perturbative renormalisation and improvement of non-singlet tensor currents in $N_\mathrm{f}=3$ QCD

Hadronic matrix elements involving tensor currents play an important rôle in decays that allow to probe the consistency of the Standard Model via precision lattice QCD calculations. The non-singlet tensor current is a scale-dependent (anomalous) quantity. We fully resolve its renormalisation group (RG) running in the continuum by carrying out a recursive finite-size scaling technique. In this way ambiguities due to a perturbative RG running and matching to lattice data at low energies are eliminated. We provide the total renormalisation factor at a hadronic scale of 233 MeV, which converts the bare current into its RG-invariant form. Our calculation features three flavours of O(a) improved Wilson fermions and tree-level Symanzik-improved gauge action. We employ the (massless) Schrödinger functional renormalisation scheme throughout and present the first non-perturbative determination of the Symanzik counterterm $c_\mathrm{T}$ derived from an axial Ward identity. We elaborate on various details of our calculations, including two different renormalisation conditions.

Non-perturbative tests of continuum HQET through small-volume two-flavour QCD

We study the heavy quark mass dependence of selected observables constructed from heavy-light meson correlation functions in small-volume two-flavour lattice QCD after taking the continuum limit. The light quark mass is tuned to zero, whereas the range of available heavy quark masses $m_h$ covers a region extending from around the charm to beyond the bottom quark mass scale. This allows entering the asymptotic mass-scaling regime as $1/m_h \to 0$ and performing well-controlled extrapolations to the infinite-mass limit. Our results are then compared to predictions obtained in the static limit of continuum Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET), in order to verify non-perturbatively that HQET is an effective theory of QCD. While in general we observe a nice agreement at the few-% level, we find it to be less convincing for the small-volume pseudoscalar decay constant when perturbative matching is involved.

Decay constants of B-mesons from non-perturbative HQET with two light dynamical quarks

We present a computation of B-meson decay constants from lattice QCD simulations within the framework of Heavy Quark Effective Theory for the b-quark. The next-to-leading order corrections in the HQET expansion are included non-perturbatively. Based on Nf=2 gauge field ensembles, covering three lattice spacings a (0.08-0.05)fm and pion masses down to 190MeV, a variational method for extracting hadronic matrix elements is used to keep systematic errors under control. In addition we perform a careful autocorrelation analysis in the extrapolation to the continuum and to the physical pion mass limits. Our final results read fB=186(13)MeV, fBs=224(14)MeV and fBs/fB=1.203(65). A comparison with other results in the literature does not reveal a dependence on the number of dynamical quarks, and effects from truncating HQET appear to be negligible.

The b-quark mass from non-perturbative $N_f=2$ Heavy Quark Effective Theory at $O(1/m_h)$

We report our final estimate of the b-quark mass from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD simulations using Heavy Quark Effective Theory non-perturbatively matched to QCD at $O(1/m_h)$. Treating systematic and statistical errors in a conservative manner, we obtain $\overline{m}_{\rm b}^{\overline{\rm MS}}(2 {\rm GeV})=4.88(15)$ GeV after an extrapolation to the physical point.

B-physics with $N_f=2$ Wilson fermions

We report the final results of the ALPHA collaboration for some B-physics observables: $f_B$, $f_{B_s}$ and $m_b$. We employ CLS configurations with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions in the sea and pion masses ranging down to 190 MeV. The b-quark is treated in HQET to order $1/m_b$. The renormalization, the matching and the improvement were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a=0.048$ fm are used in the continuum extrapolation.

$|V_{ub}|$ determination in lattice QCD

The 2012 PDG reports a tension at the level of $3 σ$ between two exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$. They are obtained by combining the experimental branching ratios of $B \to τν$ and $B \to πl ν$ (respectively) with a theoretical computation of the hadronic matrix elements $\fB$ and the $B \to π$ form factor $f_+(q^2)$. To understand the tension, improved precision and a careful analysis of the systematics involved are necessary. We report the results of the ALPHA collaboration for $\fB$ from the lattice with 2 flavors of $O(a)$ improved Wilson fermions. We employ HQET, including $1/m_b$ corrections, with pion masses ranging down to $\approx$ 190 MeV. Renormalization and matching were performed non-perturbatively, and three lattice spacings reaching $a^{-1}\approx 4.1$ GeV are used in the continuum extrapolation. We also present progress towards a computation of $f_+(q^2)$, to directly compare two independent exclusive determinations of $|V_{ub}|$ with each other and with inclusive determinations. Additionally, we report on preliminary results for $\fBq{s}$, needed for the analysis of $B_s \to μ^+μ^-$.}

B-physics from HQET in two-flavour lattice QCD

We present our analysis of B physics quantities using non-perturbatively matched Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) in Nf= 2 lattice QCD on the CLS ensembles. Using all-to-all propagators, HYP-smeared static quarks, and the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (GEVP) approach with a conservative plateau selection procedure, we are able to systematically control all sources of error. With significantly increased statistics compared to last year, our preliminary results are mb (mb) = 4.22(10)(4)z GeV for the MS b-quark mass, and fB = 193(9)stat (4)_χMeV and fBs = 219(12)stat MeV for the B-meson decay constants.

Flavour symmetry restoration and kaon weak matrix elements in quenched twisted mass QCD

We simulate two variants of quenched twisted mass QCD (tmQCD), with degenerate Wilson quarks of masses equal to or heavier than half the strange quark mass. We use Ward identities in order to measure the twist angles of the theory and thus check the quality of the tuning of mass parameters to a physics condition which stays constant as the lattice spacing is varied. Flavour symmetry breaking in tmQCD is studied in a framework of two fully twisted and two standard Wilson quark flavours, tuned to be degenerate in the continuum. Comparing pseudoscalar masses, obtained from connected quark diagrams made of tmQCD and/or standard Wilson quark propagators, we confirm that flavour symmetry breaking effects, which are at most 5%, decrease as we approach the continuum limit. We also compute the pseudoscalar decay constant in the continuum limit, with reduced systematics. As a consequence of improved tuning of the mass parameters at $β= 6.1$, we reanalyse our previous $B_K$ results. Our main phenomenological findings are $r_0 f_K = 0.421(7)$ and $\hat B_K = 0.735(71)$.

A precise determination of $B_K$ in quenched QCD

The $B_K$ parameter is computed in quenched lattice QCD with Wilson twisted mass fermions. Two variants of tmQCD are used; in both of them the relevant $ΔS = 2$ four-fermion operator is renormalised multiplicatively. The renormalisation adopted is non-perturbative, with a Schroedinger functional renormalisation condition. Renormalisation group running is also non-perturbative, up to very high energy scales. In one of the two tmQCD frameworks the computations have been performed at the physical $K$-meson mass, thus eliminating the need of mass extrapolations. Simulations have been performed at several lattice spacings and the continuum limit was reached by combining results from both tmQCD regularisations. Finite volume effects have been partially checked and turned out to be small. Exploratory studies have also been performed with non-degenerate valence flavours. The final result for the RGI bag parameter, with all sources of uncertainty (except quenching) under control, is $\hat B_K =0.789 \pm 0.046$.

Non-perturbative renormalization of left-left four-fermion operators in quenched lattice QCD

We define a family of Schroedinger Functional renormalization schemes for the four-quark multiplicatively renormalizable operators of the $ΔF = 1$ and $ΔF = 2$ effective weak Hamiltonians. Using the lattice regularization with quenched Wilson quarks, we compute non-perturbatively the renormalization group running of these operators in the continuum limit in a large range of renormalization scales. Continuum limit extrapolations are well controlled thanks to the implementation of two fermionic actions (Wilson and Clover). The ratio of the renormalization group invariant operator to its renormalized counterpart at a low energy scale, as well as the renormalization constant at this scale, is obtained for all schemes.

Lattice HQET with exponentially improved statistical precision

We introduce an alternative discretization for static quarks on the lattice retaining the O(a) improvement properties of the Eichten-Hill action. In this formulation, statistical fluctuations are reduced by a factor which grows exponentially with Euclidean time, x_0. For the first time, B-meson correlation functions are computed with good statistical precision in the static approximation for x_0>1 fm. At lattice spacings a \approx 0.1 fm, a \approx 0.08 fm and a \approx 0.07 fm the B_s-meson decay constant is determined in static and quenched approximations. A correction due to the finite mass of the b-quark is estimated by combining these static results with a recent determination of F_Ds.

Precision computation of B_K in quenched lattice QCD

We present the results of a precision computation of B_K with Wilson fermions. Simulations are performed at different lattice spacings, enabling continuum limit extrapolations. Two different twisted mass QCD (tmQCD) regularisations are considered for the computation of bare matrix elements. In both cases the relevant four-fermion operator renormalises multiplicatively. In one regularisation it is possible to perform the computation directly at the physical kaon mass value, thus avoiding extrapolations in the mass. Nonperturbative renormalisation is carried out using available Schroedinger Functional results.

The continuum limit of the quark mass step scaling function in quenched lattice QCD

The renormalisation group running of the quark mass is determined non-perturbatively for a large range of scales, by computing the step scaling function in the Schroedinger Functional formalism of quenched lattice QCD both with and without O(a) improvement. A one-loop perturbative calculation of the discretisation effects has been carried out for both the Wilson and the Clover-improved actions and for a large number of lattice resolutions. The non-perturbative computation yields continuum results which are regularisation independent, thus providing convincing evidence for the uniqueness of the continuum limit. As a byproduct, the ratio of the renormalisation group invariant quark mass to the quark mass, renormalised at a hadronic scale, is obtained with very high accuracy.

$B_K$ from twisted mass QCD

We present some preliminary results for $B_K$ at $β=6.0$, using the twisted mass QCD formalism for the computation of bare matrix elements of the $ΔS=2$ operator. The main advantage of the method is that mixing with other $d=6$ operators under renormalisation is avoided. Moreover the operator renormalisation is performed in the Schrödinger functional (SF) framework, using earlier results of our collaboration for the corresponding step scaling function.

Towards a precision computation of f_Bs in quenched QCD

We present a computation of the decay constant f_Bs in quenched QCD. Our strategy is to combine new precise data from the static approximation with an interpolation of the decay constant around the charm quark mass region. This computation is the first step in demonstrating the feasability of a strategy for f_B in full QCD. The continuum limits in the static theory and at finite mass are taken separately and will be further improved.

Static quarks with improved statistical precision

We present a numerical study for different discretisations of the static action, concerning cut-off effects and the growth of statistical errors with Euclidean time. An error reduction by an order of magnitude can be obtained with respect to the Eichten-Hill action, for time separations beyond 1.3 fm, keeping discretization errors small. The best actions lead to a big improvement on the precision of the quark mass Mb and F_Bs in the static approximation.

Recent results on the running coupling in QCD with two massless flavours

We report on the latest results on the running coupling of two flavour QCD in the Schrödinger functional scheme. Results for the step scaling function are obtained from simulations on lattices $L/a=8$ and $L/a=16$ which confirm the first results from lattices $L/a=4,5,6$ presented one year ago by the ALPHA collaboration. We also discuss some algorithmic aspects, in particular concerning the occurrence of metastable states. A modified sampling, in order to estimate the proper weight of these states in the path integral, is proposed and tested.
