Non-perturbative scale evolution of four-fermion operators

We apply the Schroedinger Functional (SF) formalism to determine the renormalisation group running of four-fermion operators which appear in the effective weak Hamiltonian of the Standard Model. Our calculations are done using Wilson fermions and the parity-odd components of the operators. Preliminary results are presented for the operator $O_{VA}=(\bar s γ_μd)(\bar s γ_μγ_5 d)$.

Cutoff effects in twisted mass lattice QCD

We present a first numerical study of lattice QCD with O(a) improved Wilson quarks and a chirally twisted mass term. Renormalized correlation functions are derived from the Schroedinger functional and evaluated in an intermediate space-time volume of size 0.75^3 x 1.5 fm^4. In the quenched approximation precise results are then obtained with a moderate computational effort, allowing for a detailed study of the continuum approach. The latter is discussed in terms of observables which converge to meson masses and decay constants in the limit of large space-time volume. In the O(a) improved theory we find residual cutoff effects to be at the level of a few percent for lattice spacings of about 0.1 fm.

Quenched twisted mass QCD at small quark masses and in large volume

As a test of quenched lattice twisted mass QCD, we compute the non-perturbatively O($a$) improved pseudoscalar and vector meson masses and the pseudoscalar decay constant down to $M_{\rm PS}/M_{\rm V} = 0.467(13)$ at $β=6$ in large volume. We check the absence of exceptional configurations and -- by further data at $β=6.2$ -- the size of scaling violations. The CPU time cost for reaching a given accuracy is close to that with ordinary Wilson quarks at $M_{\rm PS}/M_{\rm V} \simeq 0.6$ and grows smoothly as $M_{\rm PS}/M_{\rm V}$ decreases.

Status of APEmille

This paper presents the status of the APEmille project, which is essentially completed, as far as machine development and construction is concerned. Several large installations of APEmille are in use for physics production runs leading to many new results presented at this conference. This paper briefly summarizes the APEmille architecture, reviews the status of the installations and presents some performance figures for physics codes.

K0-K0bar mixing from the Schroedinger functional and twisted mass QCD

We describe how the Schroedinger functional and twisted mass QCD can be used to compute the kaon B-parameter B_K on the lattice with Wilson fermions. This new approach is expected to reduce the systematic uncertainties on B_K through a better control of its (nonperturbative) renormalisation. Preliminary results for the bare matrix element in a physical volume of (1.5^3 x 4.5) fm^4 are presented. The renormalisation of the matrix element in a Schroedinger functional scheme is also discussed.

Non-perturbative scaling tests of twisted mass QCD

We present a scaling study of lattice QCD with O(a) improved Wilson fermions and a chirally twisted mass term. In order to get precise results with a moderate computational effort, we have considered a system of physical size of 0.75^3 * 1.5 fm^4 with Schroedinger functional boundary conditions in the quenched approximation. Looking at meson observables in the pseudoscalar and vector channels, we find that O(a) improvement is effective and residual cutoff effects are fairly small.

End point of the electroweak phase transition

We study the hot electroweak phase transition (EWPT) by 4-dimensional lattice simulations on lattices with symmetric and asymmetric lattice spacings and give the phase diagram. A continuum extrapolation is done. We find first order phase transition for Higgs-boson masses $m_H<66.5 \pm 1.4$ GeV. Above this end point a rapid cross-over occurs. Our result agrees with that of the dimensional reduction approach. It also indicates that the fermionic sector of the Standard Model (SM) may be included perturbatively. We get for the SM end point $72.4 \pm 1.7$ GeV. Thus, the LEP Higgs-boson mass lower bound excludes any EWPT in the SM.

The strength of the electroweak phase transition at $m_H \approx$ 80 GeV

In this letter we present the results of our numerical simulations for the finite temperature electroweak phase transition using the SU(2)-Higgs model on four-dimensional lattices at $m_H \approx 80$ GeV. The temporal extension $L_t=2$ is used for asymmetric lattice spacings with an asymmetry parameter $a_s/a_t \approx 4$. The measured thermodynamical quantities (interface tension, jump of the order parameter and latent heat) suggest that the phase transition is of very weakly first order.

Perturbative and non-perturbative studies of the SU(2)-Higgs model on lattices with asymmetric lattice spacings

We present a calculation of the O(g^2,λ) perturbative corrections to the coupling anisotropies of the SU(2)-Higgs model on lattices with asymmetric lattice spacings. These corrections are obtained by a one-loop calculation requiring the rotational invariance of the gauge and Higgs boson propagators in the continuum limit. The coupling anisotropies are also determined from numerical simulations of the model on appropriate lattices. The one-loop perturbation theory and the simulation results agree with high accuracy. It is demonstrated that rotational invariance is also restored for the static potential determined from space-space and space-time Wilson loops.

Where does the hot electroweak phase transition end?

We give the nonperturbative phase diagram of the four-dimensional hot electroweak phase transition. A systematic extrapolation $a \to 0$ is done. Our results show that the finite temperature SU(2)-Higgs phase transition is of first order for Higgs-boson masses $m_H<66.5 \pm 1.4$ GeV. The full four-dimensional result agrees completely with that of the dimensional reduction approximation. This fact is of particular importance, because it indicates that the fermionic sector of the Standard Model (SM) can be included perturbatively. We obtain that the Higgs-boson endpoint mass in the SM is $72.4 \pm 1.7$ GeV. Taking into account the LEP Higgs-boson mass lower bound excludes any electroweak phase transition in the SM.

Endpoint of the hot electroweak phase transition

We give the nonperturbative phase diagram of the four-dimensional hot electroweak phase transition. The Monte-Carlo analysis is done on lattices with different lattice spacings ($a$). A systematic extrapolation $a \to 0$ is done. Our results show that the finite temperature SU(2)-Higgs phase transition is of first order for Higgs-boson masses $m_H<66.5 \pm 1.4$ GeV. At this endpoint the phase transition is of second order, whereas above it only a rapid cross-over can be seen. The full four-dimensional result agrees completely with that of the dimensional reduction approximation. This fact is of particular importance, because it indicates that the fermionic sector of the Standard Model can be included perturbatively. We obtain that the Higgs-boson endpoint mass in the Standard Model is $72.4 \pm 1.7$ GeV. Taking into account the LEP Higgs-boson mass lower bound excludes any electroweak phase transition in the Standard Model.

Electroweak phase transition by four dimensional simulations

The finite temperature phase transition in the SU(2)-Higgs model at a Higgs boson mass $M_H \simeq 35$ GeV is studied in numerical simulations on four dimensional lattices with time-like extensions up to $L_t=5$. $T_c/M_H$ is extrapolated to the continuum limit and a comparison with the perturbative prediction is made. A one-loop calculation to the coupling anisotropies of the SU(2)-Higgs model on lattices with asymmetric lattice spacings is presented. Our numerical simulations show that the above perturbative result is applicable in the phenomenologically interesting parameter region.

Interface Tension of the Electroweak Phase Transition

In our nonperturbative lattice investigation we study the interface tension of the finite-temperature electroweak phase transition. In this analysis the Higgs mass has been chosen to be about $35$ GeV. At the transition point of a finite volume system, tunnelling between the symmetric and the Higgs phase takes place. This phenomenon leads to a splitting of the ground state, which can be used to determine the interface tension. The result obtained this way agrees with the result of the two-coupling method and with the prediction of the perturbative approach.
