Replica Limit of the Toda Lattice Equation

In a recent breakthrough Kanzieper showed that it is possible to obtain exact nonperturbative Random Matrix results from the replica limit of the corresponding Painlevé equation. In this article we analyze the replica limit of the Toda lattice equation and obtain exact expressions for the resolvent of the chiral Unitary Ensemble both in the quenched limit and in the presence of additional massive flavors. This derivation explains in a natural way the appearance of both compact and noncompact integrals, the hallmark of the supersymmetric method, in the replica limit of the expression for the resolvent. We also show that the supersymmetric partition function and the partition function with fermionic replicas are related through the Toda lattice equation.

Critical statistics in quantum chaos and Calogero-Sutherland model at finite temperature

We investigate the spectral properties of a generalized GOE (Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble) capable of describing critical statistics. The joint distribution of eigenvalues of this model is expressed as the diagonal element of the density matrix of a gas of particles governed by the Calogero-Sutherland Hamiltonian (C-S). Taking advantage of the correspondence between C-S particles and eigenvalues, we show that the number variance of our random matrix model is asymptotically linear with a slope depending on the parameters of the model. Such linear behavior is a signature of critical statistics. This random matrix model may be relevant for the description of spectral correlations of complex quantum systems with a self-similar/fractal Poincaré section of its classical counterpart. This is shown in detail for two examples: the anisotropic Kepler problem and a kicked particle in a well potential. In both cases the number variance and the $Δ_3$-statistic is accurately described by our analytical results.

The factorization method for systems with a complex action -a test in Random Matrix Theory for finite density QCD-

Monte Carlo simulations of systems with a complex action are known to be extremely difficult. A new approach to this problem based on a factorization property of distribution functions of observables has been proposed recently. The method can be applied to any system with a complex action, and it eliminates the so-called overlap problem completely. We test the new approach in a Random Matrix Theory for finite density QCD, where we are able to reproduce the exact results for the quark number density. The achieved system size is large enough to extract the thermodynamic limit. Our results provide a clear understanding of how the expected first order phase transition is induced by the imaginary part of the action.

Dirac Spectra and Real QCD at Nonzero Chemical Potential

We show that QCD Dirac spectra well below Lambda_{QCD}, both at zero and at nonzero chemical potential, can be obtained from a chiral Lagrangian. At nonzero chemical potential Goldstone bosons with nonzero baryon number condense beyond a critical value. Such superfluid phase transition is likely to occur in any system with a chemical potential with the quantum numbers of the Goldstone bosons. We discuss the phase diagram for one such system, QCD with two colors, and show the existence of a tricritical point in an effective potential approach.

Thermodynamics of chiral symmetry at low densities

The phase diagram of two-color QCD as a function of temperature and baryon chemical potential is considered. Using a low-energy chiral Lagrangian based on the symmetries of the microscopic theory, we determine, at the one-loop level, the temperature dependence of the critical chemical potential for diquark condensation and the temperature dependence of the diquark condensate and baryon density. The prediction for the temperature dependence of the critical chemical potential is consistent with the one obtained for a dilute Bose gas. The associated phase transition is shown to be of second order for low temperatures and first order at higher temperatures. The tricritical point at which the second order phase transition ends is determined. The results are carried over to QCD with quarks in the adjoint representation and to ordinary QCD at a non-zero chemical potential for isospin.

Critical statistics for non-Hermitian matrices

We introduce a generalized ensemble of nonhermitian matrices interpolating between the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble, the Ginibre ensemble and the Poisson ensemble. The joint eigenvalue distribution of this model is obtained by means of an extension of the Itzykson-Zuber formula to general complex matrices. Its correlation functions are studied both in the case of weak nonhermiticity and in the case of strong nonhermiticity. In the weak nonhermiticity limit we show that the spectral correlations in the bulk of the spectrum display critical statistics: the asymptotic linear behavior of the number variance is already approached for energy differences of the order of the eigenvalue spacing. To lowest order, its slope does not depend on the degree of nonhermiticity. Close the edge, the spectral correlations are similar to the Hermitian case. In the strong nonhermiticity limit the crossover behavior from the Ginibre ensemble to the Poisson ensemble first appears close to the surface of the spectrum. Our model may be relevant for the description of the spectral correlations of an open disordered system close to an Anderson transition.

Kaon Condensation and Goldstone's Theorem

We consider QCD at a nonzero chemical potential for strangeness. At a critical value of the chemical potential equal to the kaon mass, kaon condensation occurs through a continuous phase transition. We show that, when the isospin symmetry is exact in the Lagrangian, a Goldstone boson with a dispersion relation $E \sim p^2$ appears in the kaon condensed phase. At the same time, the number of the Goldstone bosons is less than the number of broken generators. Both phenomena are familiar in non-relativistic systems. We interpret our results in terms of a Goldstone boson counting rule found previously by Nielsen and Chadha. We also formulate a criterion sufficient for the equality between the number of Goldstone bosons and the number of broken generators.

Diquark Condensate in QCD with Two Colors at Next-to-Leading Order

We study QCD with two colors and quarks in the fundamental representation at finite baryon density in the limit of light quark masses. In this limit the free energy of this theory reduces to the free energy of a chiral Lagrangian which is based on the symmetries of the microscopic theory. In earlier work this Lagrangian was analyzed at the mean field level and a phase transition to a phase of condensed diquarks was found at a chemical potential of half the diquark mass (which is equal to the pion mass). In this article we analyze this theory at next-to-leading order in chiral perturbation theory. We show that the theory is renormalizable and calculate the next-to-leading order free energy in both phases of the theory. By deriving a Landau-Ginzburg theory for the order parameter we show that the finite one-loop contribution and the next-to-leading order terms in the chiral Lagrangian do not qualitatively change the phase transition. In particular, the critical chemical potential is equal to half the next-to-leading order pion mass, and the phase transition is second order.

QCD3 and the Replica Method

Using the replica method, we analyze the mass dependence of the QCD3 partition function in a parameter range where the leading contribution is from the zero momentum Goldstone fields. Three complementary approaches are considered in this article. First, we derive exact relations between the QCD3 partition function and the QCD4 partition function continued to half-integer topological charge. The replica limit of these formulas results in exact relations between the corresponding microscopic spectral densities of QCD3 and QCD4. Replica calculations, which are exact for QCD4 at half-integer topological charge, thus result in exact expressions for the microscopic spectral density of the QCD3 Dirac operator. Second, we derive Virasoro constraints for the QCD3 partition function. They uniquely determine the small-mass expansion of the partition function and the corresponding sum rules for inverse Dirac eigenvalues. Due to de Wit-'t Hooft poles, the replica limit only reproduces the small mass expansion of the resolvent up to a finite number of terms. Third, the large mass expansion of the resolvent is obtained from the replica limit of a loop expansion of the QCD3 partition function. Because of Duistermaat-Heckman localization exact results are obtained for the microscopic spectral density in this way.

Virasoro Constraints and Flavor-Topology Duality in QCD

We derive Virasoro constraints for the zero momentum part of the QCD-like partition functions in the sector of topological charge $ν$. The constraints depend on the topological charge only through the combination $N_f +βν/2$ where the value of the Dyson index $β$ is determined by the reality type of the fermions. This duality between flavor and topology is inherited by the small-mass expansion of the partition function and {\em all} spectral sum-rules of inverse powers of the eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. For the special case $β=2$ but arbitrary topological charge the Virasoro constraints are solved uniquely by a Generalized Kontsevich Model with potential ${\cal V}(X) = 1/X$.

Statistical properties of the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator at low energy

We analyze the statistical properties of the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator at low energy in a finite box of volume $L^4$ by means of partially quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory (pqChPT), a low-energy effective field theory based on the symmetries of QCD. We derive the two-point spectral correlation function from the discontinuity of the chiral susceptibility. For eigenvalues much smaller than $E_c=F^2/ΣL^2$, where $F$ is the pion decay constant and $Σ$ is the absolute value of the quark condensate, our result for the two-point correlation function coincides with the result previously obtained from chiral Random Matrix Theory (chRMT). The departure from the chRMT result above that scale is described by the contribution of the nonzero momentum modes. In terms of the variance of the number of eigenvalues in an interval containing $n$ eigenvalues on average, it results in a crossover from a $\log n$-behavior to a $n^2 \log n$-behavior.

Randomness on the Lattice

In this lecture we review recent lattice QCD studies of the statistical properties of the eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator. We find that the fluctuations of the smallest Dirac eigenvalues are described by chiral Random Matrix Theories with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. Deviations from chiral Random Matrix Theory beyond the Thouless energy can be understood analytically by means of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory.

Dirac Spectrum in Adjoint QCD

In this lecture we discuss some exact results for the low-lying spectrum of the Dirac operator in adjoint QCD. In particular, we find an analytical expression for the slope of the average spectral density. These results are obtained by means of a generating function which is an extension of the QCD partition function with fermionic and bosonic ghost quarks. The low-energy limit of this generating function is completely determined by chiral (super-)symmetries. Our results for the slope of the average spectral density are consistent with the results for the scalar susceptibility which can be obtained from the usual chiral Lagrangian.

QCD-like Theories at Finite Baryon Density

We study QCD-like theories with pseudoreal fermions at finite baryon density. Such theories include two-color QCD with quarks in the fundamental representation of the color group as well as any-color QCD with quarks in the adjoint color representation. In all such theories the lightest baryons are diquarks. At zero chemical potential $μ$ they are, together with the pseudoscalar mesons, the Goldstone modes of a spontaneously broken enlarged chiral symmetry group. Using symmetry principles, we derive the low-energy effective Lagrangian for these particles. We find that a second order phase transition occurs at a value of $μ$ equal to half the mass of the Goldstone modes. For values of $μ$ beyond this point the scalar diquarks Bose condense and the diquark condensate is nonzero. We calculate the dependence of the chiral condensate, the diquark condensate, the baryon charge density, and the masses of the diquark and pseudoscalar excitations on $μ$ at finite bare quark mass and scalar diquark source. The relevance of our results to lattice QCD calculations and to real three-color QCD at finite baryon density is discussed.

Random Matrix Theory and Chiral Symmetry in QCD

Random matrix theory is a powerful way to describe universal correlations of eigenvalues of complex systems. It also may serve as a schematic model for disorder in quantum systems. In this review, we discuss both types of applications of chiral random matrix theory to the QCD partition function. We show that constraints imposed by chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking determine the structure of low-energy effective partition functions for the Dirac spectrum. We thus derive exact results for the low-lying eigenvalues of the QCD Dirac operator. We argue that the statistical properties of these eigenvalues are universal and can be described by a random matrix theory with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. The total number of such eigenvalues increases with the square root of the Euclidean four-volume. The spectral density for larger eigenvalues (but still well below a typical hadronic mass scale) also follows from the same low-energy effective partition function. The validity of the random matrix approach has been confirmed by many lattice QCD simulations in a wide parameter range. Stimulated by the success of the chiral random matrix theory in the description of universal properties of the Dirac eigenvalues, the random matrix model is extended to nonzero temperature and chemical potential. In this way we obtain qualitative results for the QCD phase diagram and the spectrum of the QCD Dirac operator. We discuss the nature of the quenched approximation and analyze quenched Dirac spectra at nonzero baryon density in terms of an effective partition function. Relations with other fields are also discussed.

Spectral Universality of Real Chiral Random Matrix Ensembles

We investigate the universality of microscopic eigenvalue correlations for Random Matrix Theories with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. In this article we analyze the case of real valued chiral Random Matrix Theories ($β=1$) by relating the kernel of the correlations functions for $β=1$ to the kernel of chiral Random Matrix Theories with complex matrix elements ($β= 2$), which is already known to be universal. Our proof is based on a novel asymptotic property of the skew-orthogonal polynomials: an integral over the corresponding wavefunctions oscillates about half its asymptotic value in the region of the bulk of the zeros. This result solves the puzzle that microscopic universality persists in spite of contributions to the microscopic correlators from the region near the largest zero of the skew-orthogonal polynomials. Our analytical results are illustrated by the numerical construction of the skew-orthogonal polynomials for an $x^4$ probability potential.

Chiral Random Matrix Model for Critical Statistics

We propose a random matrix model that interpolates between the chiral random matrix ensembles and the chiral Poisson ensemble. By mapping this model on a non-interacting Fermi-gas we show that for energy differences less than a critical energy $E_c$ the spectral correlations are given by chiral Random Matrix Theory whereas for energy differences larger than $E_c$ the number variance shows a linear dependence on the energy difference with a slope that depends on the parameters of the model. If the parameters are scaled such that the slope remains fixed in the thermodynamic limit, this model provides a description of QCD Dirac spectra in the universality class of critical statistics. In this way a good description of QCD Dirac spectra for gauge field configurations given by a liquid of instantons is obtained.

Effective Low Energy Theories and QCD Dirac Spectra

We analyze the smallest Dirac eigenvalues by formulating an effective theory for the QCD Dirac spectrum. We find that in a domain where the kinetic term of the effective theory can be ignored, the Dirac eigenvalues are distributed according to a Random Matrix Theory with the global symmetries of the QCD partition function. The kinetic term provides information on the slope of the average spectral density of the Dirac operator. In the second half of this lecture we interpret quenched QCD Dirac spectra at nonzero chemical potential (with eigenvalues scattered in the complex plane) in terms of an effective low energy theory.
