Physics-based AI methodology for Material Parameter Extraction from Optical Data

We report on a novel methodology for extracting material parameters from spectroscopic optical data using a physics-based neural network. The proposed model integrates classical optimization frameworks with a multi-scale object detection framework, specifically exploring the effect of incorporating physics into the neural network. We validate and analyze its performance on simulated transmission spectra at terahertz and infrared frequencies. Compared to traditional model-based approaches, our method is designed to be autonomous, robust, and time-efficient, making it particularly relevant for industrial and societal applications.

Thermal and electrostatic tuning of surface phonon-polaritons in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Phonon polaritons are promising for infrared applications due to a strong light-matter coupling and subwavelength energy confinement they offer. Yet, the spectral narrowness of the phonon bands and difficulty to tune the phonon polariton properties hinder further progress in this field. SrTiO3 - a prototype perovskite oxide - has recently attracted attention due to two prominent far-infrared phonon polaritons bands, albeit without any tuning reported so far. Here we show, using cryogenic infrared near-field microscopy, that long-propagating surface phonon polaritons are present both in bare SrTiO3 and in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures hosting a two-dimensional electron gas. The presence of the two-dimensional electron gas increases dramatically the thermal variation of the upper limit of the surface phonon polariton band due to temperature dependent polaronic screening of the surface charge carriers. Furthermore, we demonstrate a tunability of the upper surface phonon polariton frequency in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 via electrostatic gating. Our results suggest that oxide interfaces are a new platform bridging unconventional electronics and long-wavelength nanophotonics.

Tunable localization in an s-electron Kondo system at room temperature

To achieve room-temperature superconductivity, a mechanism is needed that provides heavy quasiparticles at room temperature. In heavy fermion systems such localization is prototypically present only at liquid helium temperatures. In these $f$-electron Kondo systems, conduction electrons magnetically couple to localized moments, enhancing their mass and scatting time. These quasiparticles may form Cooper pairs and cause unconventional superconductivity with a critical temperature $T_c$ of the order of the Fermi energy $\varepsilon_F$. In relative terms, this $T_c$ is much larger than in cuprate or BCS superconductors for which $T_c\ll \varepsilon_F$. This suggests that Kondo systems in general have the potential to be high-temperature superconductors. For this to occur, strong correlations that cause electron localization need to take place at much larger temperatures. Here we show that metal hydrides manifest strong electron correlations in a single $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ band at the Fermi level, similar to the cuprates but at room temperature. Hole doping of this band, by varying the hydrogen content, causes divergence of the carrier mass and suggests the approach of an ordered Mott transition with signatures of a correlated metallic Kondo lattice. These room-temperature phenomena are expected to be widespread across hydrogen-rich compounds, and offer a promising novel ground to encounter unconventional superconductivity in the class of the metallic hydrides.

Dynamics of the stratification process in drying colloidal dispersions studied by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

We present an optical study that reveals the bulk dynamics of the stratification process in drying colloidal dispersions. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy has been used to measure in situ solventborne and waterborne paint layers as a function of drying time. The dynamic behavior of the dry top layer and wet bottom layer thickness, as well as the bulk thickness, reflect the principal processes of the established drying mechanism. In addition, the results demonstrate stratification only when the drying process is in the evaporation controlled regime, whereas the coating is shown to remain a single layer for diffusion controlled drying.

Stratified dispersive model for material characterization using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

We propose a novel THz material analysis approach which provides highly accurate material parameters and can be used for industrial quality control. The method treats the inspected material within its environment locally as a stratified system and describes the light-matter interaction of each layer in a realistic way. The approach is illustrated in the time-domain and frequency-domain for two potential fields of implementation of THz technology: quality control of (coated) paper sheets and car paint multilayers, both measured in humid air.

Phononic gaps in the charged incommensurate planes of Sr14Cu24O41

The terahertz (THz) excitations in the quantum spin-ladder system Sr14Cu24O41 have been determined along the c-axis using THz time-domain, Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Low-frequency infrared and Raman active modes are observed above and below the charge-ordering temperature T_{co} ~ 200 K over a narrow interval of 1 - 2 meV . A new infrared mode around 1 meV develops below ~ 100 K. The temperature dependence of these modes shows that they are coupled to the charge- and spin-density-wave correlations in this system. These low-energy features are conjectured to originate in the gapped sliding-motion of the chain and ladder sub-systems, which are both incommensurate and charged.

Surface state charge dynamics of a high-mobility three dimensional topological insulator

We present a magneto-optical study of the three-dimensional topological insulator, strained HgTe using a technique which capitalizes on advantages of time-domain spectroscopy to amplify the signal from the surface states. This measurement delivers valuable and precise information regarding the surface state dispersion within <1 meV of the Fermi level. The technique is highly suitable for the pursuit of the topological magnetoelectric effect and axion electrodynamics.

Common Fermi-liquid origin of T-squared resistivity and superconductivity in n-type SrTiO3

A detailed analysis is given of the T^2 term in the resistivity observed in electron-doped SrTiO3. Novel bandstructure data are presented, which provide values for the bare mass, density of states, and plasma frequency of the quasiparticles as a function of doping. It is shown that these values are renormalized by approximately a factor 2 due to electron-phonon interaction. It is argued that the quasiparticles are in the anti-adiabatic limit with respect to electron-phonon interaction. The condition of anti-adiabatic coupling renders the interaction mediated through phonons effectively non-retarded. We apply Fermi-liquid theory developed in the 70's for the T^2 term in the resistivity of common metals, and combine this with expressions for Tc and with the Brinkman-Platzman-Rice (BPR) sum-rule to obtain Landau parameters of n-type SrTiO3. These parameters are comparable to those of liquid 3He, indicating interesting parallels between these Fermi-liquids despite the differences between the composite fermions from which they are formed.

Spin resonance in EuTiO3 probed by time-domain GHz ellipsometry

We show an example of a purely magnetic spin resonance in EuTiO3 and the resulting new record high Faraday rotation of 590 deg/mm at 1.6 T for 1 cm wavelengths probed by a novel technique of magneto-optical GHz time-domain ellipsometry. From our transmission measurements of linear polarized light we map out the complex index of refraction in the GHz to THz range. We observe a strong resonant absorption by magnetic dipole transitions involving the Zeeman split S=7/2 magnetic energy levels of the Eu 2+ ions, which causes a very large dichroism for circular polarized radiation.

Many-body large polaron optical conductivity in SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$

Recent experimental data on the optical conductivity of niobium doped SrTiO$_{3}$ are interpreted in terms of a gas of large polarons with effective coupling constant $α_{eff}\approx2$. The {theoretical approach takes into account} many-body effects, the electron-phonon interaction with multiple LO-phonon branches, and the degeneracy and the anisotropy of the Ti t$_{2g}$ conduction band. {Based on the Fröhlich interaction, the many-body large-polaron theory} provides an interpretation for the essential characteristics, except -- interestingly -- for the unexpectedly large intensity of a peak at $\sim130$ meV, of the observed optical conductivity spectra of SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$ \textit{without} any adjustment of material parameters.

Electron-phonon interaction and charge carrier mass enhancement in SrTiO3

We report a comprehensive THz, infrared and optical study of Nb doped SrTiO3 as well as DC conductivity and Hall effect measurements. Our THz spectra at 7K show the presence of a very narrow (<2 meV) Drude peak, the spectral weight of which shows approximately a factor of three enhancement of the band mass for all carrier concentrations. The missing spectral weight is regained in a broad 'mid-infrared' band which originates from electron-phonon coupling. We find no evidence of a particularly large electron-phonon coupling that would result in small polaron formation. Analysis of the results yields an electron-phonon coupling parameter of an intermediate strength, $α\approx 4$.

Oxygen isotope effect and phase separation in the optical conductivity of (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films

The optical conductivities of films of (La$_{0.5}$Pr$_{0.5}$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ with different oxygen isotopes ($^{16}$O and $^{18}$O) have been determined in the spectral range from 0.3 to 4.3 eV using a combination of transmission in the mid-infrared and ellipsometry from the near-infrared to ultra-violet regions. We have found that the isotope exchange strongly affects the optical response in the ferromagnetic phase in a broad frequency range, in contrast to the almost isotope-independent optical conductivity above $T_C$. The substitution by $^{18}$O strongly suppresses the Drude response and a mid-infrared peak while enhancing the conductivity peak at 1.5 eV. A qualitative explanation can be given in terms of the phase separation present in these materials. Moreover, the optical response is similar to the one extracted from measurements in polished samples and other thin films, which signals to the importance of internal strain.

The highly tunable Mg-Ni-H switchable mirror system

The Mg-Ni-H switchable mirror system shows a spectacular composition dependence in the hydrogenated state. The optical transmission of a hydrogenated Mg-Ni-H gradient film displays a stripe-like pattern that consists of alternating regions of high and low transmission. This behavior is peculiar as the composite Mg-Ni-H phase diagram only predicts a gradual change between MgH2 and Mg2NiH4 which can not account for the observed composition dependence. In order to understand the observed transmission pattern, the Mg-Ni-H system has been investigated optically, electrically, structurally and morphologically in the metallic and hydrogenated state. As-deposited, metallic, Mg-Ni composition gradient thin films contain the Mg2Ni and MgNi2 phases for well-defined composition regions. In the hydrogenated state, vibrational spectroscopy shows the composition dependence of semiconducting Mg2NiH4 which is formed from metallic Mg2Ni. On exposure to hydrogen, physical properties change as well near the equiatomic composition and the composition of MgNi2, pointing to possible hydride formation. The strong composition dependence of the Mg-Ni-H system, expressed in the observed transmission, can eventually be understood from the distribution of Mg2NiH4 and the occurrence of MgH2 for higher Mg contents.

Mg-Ni-H films as selective coatings: tunable reflectance by layered hydrogenation

Unlike other switchable mirrors, Mg2NiHx films show large changes in reflection that yield very low reflectance (high absorptance) at different hydrogen contents, far before reaching the semiconducting state. The resulting reflectance patterns are of interference origin, due to a self-organized layered hydrogenation mechanism that starts at the substrate interface, and can therefore be tuned by varying the film thickness. This tunability, together with the high absorptance contrast observed between the solar and the thermal energies, strongly suggests the use of these films in smart coatings for solar applications.
