Observation of field-dependent magnetic parameters in the magnetic molecule {Ni4Mo12}

We investigate the bulk magnetic, electron paramagnetic resonance, and magneto-optical properties of {Ni4Mo12}, a magnetic molecule with antiferromagnetically coupled tetrahedral {Ni4Mo12} in a diamagnetic molybdenum matrix. The low-temperature magnetization exhibits steps at irregular field intervals, a result that cannot be explained using a Heisenberg model even if it is augmented by magnetic anisotropy and biquadratic terms. Allowing the exchange and anisotropy parameters to depend on the magnetic field provides the best fit to our data, suggesting that the molecular structure (and thus the interactions between spins) may be changing with applied magnetic field.

Neutron Scattering and Magnetic Observables for S = 1/2 Molecular Magnets

In this paper we report results for magnetic observables of finite spin clusters composed of S=1/2 ions. We consider clusters of two, three and four spins in distinct spatial arrangements, with isotropic Heisenberg interactions of various strengths between ion pairs. In addition to the complete set of energy eigenvalues and eigenvectors, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, we also quote results for the single crystal and powder average inelastic neutron scattering structure factors. Examples of the application of these results to experimental systems are also discussed.

Magnetic Field Effects on the Far-Infrared Absorption in Mn_12-acetate

We report the far-infrared spectra of the molecular nanomagnet Mn_12-acetate (Mn_12) as a function of temperature (5-300 K) and magnetic field (0-17 T). The large number of observed vibrational modes is related to the low symmetry of the molecule, and they are grouped together in clusters. Analysis of the mode character based on molecular dynamics simulations and model compound studies shows that all vibrations are complex; motion from a majority of atoms in the molecule contribute to most modes. Three features involving intramolecular vibrations of the Mn_12 molecule centered at 284, 306 and 409 cm-1 show changes with applied magnetic field. The structure near 284 cm$^{-1}$ displays the largest deviation with field and is mainly intensity related. A comparison between the temperature dependent absorption difference spectra, the gradual low-temperature cluster framework distortion as assessed by neutron diffraction data, and field dependent absorption difference spectra suggests that this mode may involve Mn motion in the crown.

Using electronic structure changes to map the H-T phase diagram of alpha'-NaV2O5

We report polarized optical reflectance studies of α'-NaV2O5 as a function of temperature (4-45 K) and magnetic field (0-60 T). Rung directed electronic structure changes, as measured by near-infrared reflectance ratios ΔR(H)=R(H)/R(H=0 T), are especially sensitive to the phase boundaries. We employ these changes to map out an H-T phase diagram. Topological highlights include the observation of two phase boundaries slightly below T_{SG}, enhanced curvature of the 34 K phase boundary above 35 T, and, surprisingly, strong hysteresis effects of both transitions with applied field.
