Global perspectives of the bulk electronic structure of URu$_2$Si$_2$ from angle-resolved photoemission

Previous high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies of URu$_2$Si$_2$ have characterized the temperature-dependent behavior of narrow-band states close to the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) at low photon energies near the zone center, with an emphasis on electronic reconstruction due to Brillouin zone folding. A substantial challenge to a proper description is that these states interact with other hole-band states that are generally absent from bulk-sensitive soft x-ray ARPES measurements. Here we provide a more global $k$-space context for the presence of such states and their relation to the bulk Fermi surface topology using synchrotron-based wide-angle and photon energy-dependent ARPES mapping of the electronic structure using photon energies intermediate between the low-energy regime and the high-energy soft x-ray regime. Small-spot spatial dependence, $f$-resonant photoemission, Si 2$p$ core-levels, x-ray polarization, surface-dosing modification, and theoretical surface slab calculations are employed to assist identification of bulk versus surface state character of the $E_\mathrm{F}$-crossing bands and their relation to specific U- or Si-terminations of the cleaved surface. The bulk Fermi surface topology is critically compared to density functional theory and to dynamical mean field theory calculations. In addition to clarifying some aspects of the previously measured high symmetry $Γ$, Z and X points, incommensurate 0.6a* nested Fermi-edge states located along Z-N-Z are found to be distinctly different from the density functional theory Fermi surface prediction. The temperature evolution of these states above $T_{HO}$, combined with a more detailed theoretical investigation of this region, suggests a key role of the N-point in the hidden order transition.

Evolution of ground state wave function in CeCoIn$_5$ upon Cd or Sn doping

We present linear polarization-dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy data at the Ce $M_{4,5}$ edges of Cd and Sn doped CeCoIn$_5$. The 4$f$ ground state wave functions have been determined for their superconducting, antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic ground states. The absence of changes in the wave functions in CeCo(In$_{1-x}$Cd$_x$)$_5$ suggests the 4$f$\,--\,conduction electron ($cf$) hybridization is not affected by globally Cd doping, thus supporting the interpretation of magnetic droplets nucleating long range magnetic order. This is contrasted by changes in the wave function due to Sn substitution. Increasing Sn in CeCo(In$_{1-y}$Sn$_y$)$_5$ compresses the 4$f$ orbitals into the tetragonal plane of these materials, suggesting enhanced $cf$ hybridization with the in-plane In(1) atoms and a homogeneous altering of the electronic structure. As these experiments show, the 4$f$ wave functions are a very sensitive probe of small changes in the hybridization of 4$f$ and conduction electrons, even conveying information about direction dependencies.

Quantitative study of the f occupation in CeMIn5 and other cerium compounds with hard x-rays

We present bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) data of the Ce3d core levels and lifetime-reduced L edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the partial fluorescence yield (PFY) mode of the CeMIn5 family with M = Co, Rh, and Ir. The HAXPES data are analyzed quantitatively with a combination of full multiplet and configuration interaction model which allows correcting for the strong plasmons in the CeMIn5 HAXPES data, and reliable weights wn of the different fn contributions in the ground state are determined. The CeMIn5 results are compared to HAXPES data of other heavy fermion compounds and a systematic decrease of the hybridization strength Veff from CePd3 to CeRh3B2 to CeRu2Si2 is observed, while it is smallest for the three CeMIn5 compounds. The f-occupation, however, increases in the same sequence and is close to one for the CeMIn5 family. The PFY-XAS data confirm an identical f-occupation in the three CeMIn5 compounds and a phenomenological fit to these PFY-XAS data combined with a configuration interaction model yields consistent results.

Correlation between the phase diagram and the crystal-field wave functions of CeRh(1-x)Ir(x)In5

The 4f crystal-electric field ground state wave functions of CeRh(1-x)Ir(x)In5 have been determined by linear polarization dependent soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at T = 8 K. We demonstrate that these ground state wave functions correlate with the phase diagram of the substitution series, which covers long-range antiferromagnetic order, unconventional superconductivity, and coexistence of these two states. We discuss how certain wave functions could affect magnetic order and anisotropic hybridization, facilitating the formation of a superconducting ground state at low temperatures.

Metallic Surface States Probed Within the Microwave Skin Depth of the Putative Topological Insulator YBiPt Compound

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) experiments of diluted Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the claimed topological insulator (TI) YBiPt are reported. Powdered samples with grain size from $\approx$ 100 $μ$m to $\approx$ 2,000 $μ$m were investigated. At low temperatures, 1.6 K $\lesssim$ \emph{T} $\lesssim$ 20 K, the X-band ($9.4$ GHz) ESR spectra show a \emph{g}-value of 2.66(4) and a Dysonian resonance lineshape which shows a remarkably unusual temperature, concentration, microwave power and particle size dependence. These results indicate that metallic and insulating behavior coexist within a skin depth of $δ\approx$ 15 $μ$m. Furthermore, the Nd$^{3+}$ spin dynamics in YBiPt are consistent with the existence of a \emph{phonon-bottleneck process} which allows the energy absorbed by the Nd$^{3+}$ ions at resonance to reach the thermal bath via the conduction electrons in the metallic surface states of YBiPt. These results are discussed in terms of the claimed topological semi-metal properties of YBiPt.

Nodal quasiparticle dynamics in the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 revealed by precision microwave spectroscopy

CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion superconductor with strong similarities to the high-Tc cuprates, including quasi-two-dimensionality, proximity to antiferromagnetism, and probable d-wave pairing arising from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Experiments allowing detailed comparisons of their electronic properties are of particular interest, but in most cases are difficult to realize, due to their very different transition temperatures. Here we use low temperature microwave spectroscopy to study the charge dynamics of the CeCoIn5 superconducting state. The similarities to cuprates, in particular to ultra-clean YBa2Cu3Oy, are striking: the frequency and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle conductivity are instantly recognizable, a consequence of rapid suppression of quasiparticle scattering below Tc; and penetration depth data, when properly treated, reveal a clean, linear temperature dependence of the quasiparticle contribution to superfluid density. The measurements also expose key differences, including prominent multiband effects and a temperature dependent renormalization of the quasiparticle mass.

Band dependent emergence of heavy quasiparticles in CeCoIn5

We investigate the low temperature (T $<$ 2 K) electronic structure of the heavy fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 (T$_c$ = 2.3 K) by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The hybridization between conduction electrons and f-electrons, which ultimately leads to the emergence of heavy quasiparticles responsible for the various unusual properties of such materials, is directly monitored and shown to be strongly band dependent. In particular the most two-dimensional band is found to be the least hybridized one. A simplified multiband version of the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) is used to describe the data, resulting in semi-quantitative agreement with previous bulk sensitive results from de-Haas-van-Alphen measurements.

Multiconfigurational nature of 5f orbitals in uranium and plutonium intermetallics

Uranium and plutonium's 5f electrons are tenuously poised between strongly bonding with ligand spd-states and residing close to the nucleus. The unusual properties of these elements and their compounds (eg. the six different allotropes of elemental plutonium) are widely believed to depend on the related attributes of f-orbital occupancy and delocalization, for which a quantitative measure is lacking. By employing resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) and x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy and making comparisons to specific heat measurements, we demonstrate the presence of multiconfigurational f-orbital states in the actinide elements U and Pu, and in a wide range of uranium and plutonium intermetallic compounds. These results provide a robust experimental basis for a new framework for understanding the strongly-correlated behavior of actinide materials.

Coherent energy scale revealed by ultrafast dynamics of UX$_{3}$ (X=Al, Sn, Ga) single crystals

Temperature dependence of relaxation dynamics of UX$_{3}$ (X = Al, Ga, Sn) compounds is studied using time resolved pump-probe technique in the reflectance geometry. UGa$_{3}$ is an itinerant antiferromagnet, while UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$ are spin fluctuation systems. For UGa$_{3}$, our data are consistent with the formation of a spin density wave SDW gap as evidenced from the quasidivergence of the relaxation time $τ$ near the Néel temperature $T_{N}$. For UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$, the relaxation dynamics shows a change from single exponential to two exponential behavior below a particular temperature, suggestive of coherence formation of the 5\textit{f} electrons with the conduction band electrons. This particular temperature can be attributed to the spin fluctuation temperature $T_{sf}$, a measure of the strength of Kondo coherence. Our $T_{sf}$ is consistent with other data such as resistivity and susceptibility measurements. The temperature dependence of the relaxation amplitude and time of UAl$_{3}$ and USn$_{3}$ were also fitted by the Rothwarf-Taylor model. Our results show ultrafast optical spectroscopy is sensitive to c-\textit{f} Kondo hybridization in the \textit{f}-electron systems.

Observation of the hybridization gap and Fano resonance in the Kondo lattice URu2Si2

The nature of the second order phase transition that occurs in URu2Si2 at 17.5 K remains puzzling despite intensive research over the past two and half decades. A key question emerging in the field is whether a hybridization gap between the renormalized bands can be identified as the long-sought 'hidden' order parameter. We report on the measurement of a hybridization gap in URu2Si2 employing a spectroscopic technique based on quasiparticle scattering across a ballistic metallic junction. The differential conductance exhibits an asymmetric double-peak structure, a clear signature for a Fano resonance in a Kondo lattice. The extracted hybridization gap opens well above the transition temperature, indicating that it is not the hidden order parameter. Our results put stringent constraints on the origin of the hidden order transition in URu2Si2 and demonstrate that quasiparticle scattering spectroscopy can probe the band renormalizations in a Kondo lattice via detection of a novel type of Fano resonance.

Vortex lattice studies in CeCoIn5 with H perpendicular to c

We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the vortex lattice (VL) in CeCoIn5 with magnetic fields applied parallel (H) to the antinodal [100] and nodal [110] directions. For H || [100], a single VL orientation is observed, while a 90 degree reorientation transition is found for H || [110]. For both field orientations and VL configurations we find a distorted hexagonal VL with an anisotropy, Gamma = 2.0 +/- 0.05. The VL form factor shows strong Pauli paramagnetic effects similar to what have previously been reported for H || [001]. At high fields, above which the upper critical field (Hc2) becomes a first-order transition, an increased disordering of the VL is observed.

Hybridization and superconducting gaps in heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5 probed via the dynamics of photoinduced quasiparticles

We have examined the relaxation of photoinduced quasiparticles in the heavy-fermion superconductor PuCoGa5. The deduced electron-phonon coupling constant is incompatible with the measured superconducting transition temperature Tc=18.5 K, which speaks against phonon-mediated superconducting pairing. Upon lowering the temperature, we observe an order-of-magnitude increase of the quasiparticle relaxation time in agreement with the phonon bottleneck scenario - evidence for the presence of a hybridization gap in the electronic density of states. The modification of photoinduced reflectance in the superconducting state is consistent with the heavy character of the quasiparticles that participate in Cooper pairing.

Unusual metamagnetism in CeIrIn$_5$

We report a high field investigation (up to 45 T) of the metamagnetic transition in CeIrIn$_5$ with resistivity and de-Haas-van-Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements in the temperature range 0.03-1 K. As the magnetic field is increased the resistivity increases, reaches a maximum at the metamagnetic critical field, and falls precipitously for fields just above the transition, while the amplitude of all measurable dHvA frequencies are significantly attenuated near the metamagnetic critical field. However, the dHvA frequencies and cyclotron masses are not substantially altered by the transition. In the low field state, the resistivity is observed to increase toward low temperatures in a singular fashion, a behavior that is rapidly suppressed above the transition. Instead, in the high field state, the resistivity monotonically increases with temperature with a dependence that is more singular than the iconic Fermi-liquid, temperature-squared, behavior. Both the damping of the dHvA amplitudes and the increased resistivity near the metamagnetic critical field indicate an increased scattering rate for charge carriers consistent with critical fluctuation scattering in proximity to a phase transition. The dHvA amplitudes do not uniformly recover above the critical field, with some hole-like orbits being entirely suppressed at high fields. These changes, taken as a whole, suggest that the metamagnetic transition in CeIrIn$_5$ is associated with the polarization and localization of the heaviest of quasiparticles on the hole-like Fermi surface.

Crystal-field and Kondo scale investigation of CeMIn5 (M=Co, Ir and Rh): a combined x-ray absorption and inelastic neutron study

Linear polarized soft-x ray absorption (XAS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments have been performed on CeMIn5 with M = Rh, Ir, and Co to determine the crystal-field scheme and characteristic Kondo temperatures T* for the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons. The ground state wave functions are determined from the polarization dependent soft-XAS data at the cerium M4,5 edge and the crystal-field splittings from INS. The characteristic temperature T* has been determined from the line widths of the neutron scattering data. We find that the quasielastic line widths of the superconducting compounds CeCoIn5 and CeIrIn5 are comparable with the low energy crystal-field splitting.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy studies on CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$

High--quality single crystals of the heavy fermion superconductors CeCoIn$_5$ and CeIrIn$_5$ have been studied by means of low--temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. Methods were established to facilitate \textit{in-situ} sample cleaving. Spectroscopy in CeCoIn$_5$ reveals a gap which persists to above $T_c$, possibly evidencing a precursor state to SC. Atomically resolved topographs show a rearrangement of the atoms at the crystal surface. This modification at the surface might influence the surface properties as detected by tunneling spectroscopy.

Observations of Pauli Paramagnetic Effects on the Flux Line Lattice in CeCoIn5

From small-angle neutron scattering studies of the flux line lattice (FLL) in CeCoIn5, with magnetic field applied parallel to the crystal c-axis, we obtain the field- and temperature-dependence of the FLL form factor, which is a measure of the spatial variation of the field in the mixed state. We extend our earlier work [A.D. Bianchi et al. 2008 Science 319, 177] to temperatures up to 1250 mK. Over the entire temperature range, paramagnetism in the flux line cores results in an increase of the form factor with field. Near H_c2 the form factor decreases again, and our results indicate that this fall-off extends outside the proposed FFLO region. Instead, we attribute the decrease to a paramagnetic suppression of Cooper pairing. At higher temperatures, a gradual crossover towards more conventional mixed state behavior is observed.

Field-induced coupled superconductivity and spin density wave order in the Heavy Fermion compound CeCoIn5

The high field superconducting state in CeCoIn5 has been studied by transverse field muon spin rotation measurements with an applied field parallel to the crystallographic c-axis close to the upper critical field Hc2 = 4.97 T. At magnetic fields >= 4.8 T the muon Knight shift is enhanced and the superconducting transition changes from second order towards first order as predicted for Pauli-limited superconductors. The field and temperature dependence of the transverse muon spin relaxation rate sigma reveal paramagnetic spin fluctuations in the field regime from 2 T < H < 4.8 T. In the normal state close to Hc2 correlated spin fluctuations as described by the self consistent renormalization theory are observed. The results support the formation of a mode-coupled superconducting and antiferromagnetically ordered phase in CeCoIn5 for H directed parallel to the c-axis.

Quantum criticality in layered CeRhIn_{5-x}Sn_x compared with cubic CeIn$_{3-x}Sn_x

We report low-temperature thermal-expansion measurements on single crystals of the {\it layered} heavy fermion system \cri ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.6$) and compare it with a previous study on the related {\it cubic} system \ci [R. Küchler {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 96}, 256403 (2006)]. Both systems display a quantum critical point as proven by a divergent Grüneisen ratio. Most remarkably, the three-dimensional itinerant model explains quantum criticality in {\it both} systems, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy in \cri is unimportant. This is ascribed to the effect of weak disorder in these doped systems.
