The second catalog of flaring gamma-ray sources from the Fermi All-sky Variability Analysis

We present the second catalog of flaring gamma-ray sources (2FAV) detected with the Fermi All-sky Variability Analysis (FAVA), a tool that blindly searches for transients over the entire sky observed by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the \textit{Fermi} Gamma-ray Space Telescope. With respect to the first FAVA catalog, this catalog benefits from a larger data set, the latest LAT data release (Pass 8), as well as from an improved analysis that includes likelihood techniques for a more precise localization of the transients. Applying this analysis on the first 7.4 years of \textit{Fermi} observations, and in two separate energy bands 0.1$-$0.8 GeV and 0.8$-$300 GeV, a total of 4547 flares has been detected with a significance greater than $6σ$ (before trials), on the time scale of one week. Through spatial clustering of these flares, 518 variable gamma-ray sources are identified. Likely counterparts, based on positional coincidence, have been found for 441 sources, mostly among the blazar class of active galactic nuclei. For 77 2FAV sources, no likely gamma-ray counterpart has been found. For each source in the catalog, we provide the time, location, and spectrum of each flaring episode. Studying the spectra of the flares, we observe a harder-when-brighter behavior for flares associated with blazars, with the exception of BL Lac flares detected in the low-energy band. The photon indexes of the flares are never significantly smaller than 1.5. For a leptonic model, and under the assumption of isotropy, this limit suggests that the spectrum of the freshly accelerated electrons is never harder than $p\sim$2.

Multi-band study of RX J0838-2827 and XMM J083850.4-282759: a new asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable and a candidate transitional millisecond pulsar

In search for the counterpart to the Fermi-LAT source 3FGL J0838.8-2829, we performed a multi-wavelength campaign, in the X-ray band with Swift and XMM-Newton, performed infrared, optical (with OAGH, ESO-NTT and IAC80) and radio (ATCA) observations, as well as analysed archival hard X-ray data taken by INTEGRAL. We report on three X-ray sources consistent with the position of the Fermi-LAT source. We confirm the identification of the brightest object, RX J0838-2827, as a magnetic cataclysmic variable, that we recognize as an asynchronous system (not associated with the Fermi-LAT source). RX J0838-2827, is extremely variable in the X-ray and optical bands, and timing analysis reveals the presence of several periodicities modulating its X-ray and optical emission. The most evident modulations are interpreted as due to the binary system orbital period of ~1.64h and the white dwarf spin period of ~1.47h. A strong flux modulation at ~15h is observed at all energy bands, consistent with the beat frequency between spin and orbital periods. Optical spectra show prominent Hbeta, HeI and HeII emission lines Doppler-modulated at the orbital period and at the beat period. Therefore, RX J0838-2827, accretes through a diskless configuration and could be either a strongly asynchronous polar or a rare example of a pre-polar system in its way to reach synchronism. Among the other two X-ray sources, XMM J083850.4-282759 showed a variable X-ray emission, with a powerful flare lasting ~600s, similar to what is observed in transitional millisecond pulsars during the sub-luminous disc state: that would possibly associate this source with the Fermi-LAT source.

Breakdown of single spin-fluid model in heavily hole-doped superconductor CsFe2As2

Although Fe-based superconductors are multiorbital correlated electronic systems, previous nuclei magnetic resonance (NMR) measurement suggests that a single spin-fluid model is sufficient to describe its spin behavior. Here, we firstly observed the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in a heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductor CsFe2As2 by site-selective NMR measurement. At high temperature regime, both of Knight shift and nuclei spin-lattice relaxation at 133Cs and 75As nuclei exhibit distinct temperature-dependent behavior, suggesting the breakdown of single spin-fluid model in CsFe2As2. This is ascribed to the coexistence of both localized and itinerant spin degree of freedom at 3d orbits, which is consistent with orbital-selective Mott phase. However, single spin-fluid behavior is gradually recovered by developing a coherent state among 3d orbits with decreasing temperature. A Kondo liquid scenario is proposed for the low-temperature coherent state. The present work sets strong constraint on the theoretical model for Fe-based superconductors.

Far-infrared metallicity diagnostics: Application to local ultraluminous infrared galaxies

The abundance of metals in galaxies is a key parameter which permits to distinguish between different galaxy formation and evolution models. Most of the metallicity determinations are based on optical line ratios. However, the optical spectral range is subject to dust extinction and, for high-z objects (z > 3), some of the lines used in optical metallicity diagnostics are shifted to wavelengths not accessible to ground based observatories. For this reason, we explore metallicity diagnostics using far-infrared (IR) line ratios which can provide a suitable alternative in such situations. To investigate these far-IR line ratios, we modeled the emission of a starburst with the photoionization code CLOUDY. The most sensitive far-IR ratios to measure metallicities are the [OIII]52$μ$m and 88$μ$m to [NIII]57$μ$m ratios. We show that this ratio produces robust metallicities in the presence of an AGN and is insensitive to changes in the age of the ionizing stellar. Another metallicity sensitive ratio is the [OIII]88$μ$m/[NII]122$μ$m ratio, although it depends on the ionization parameter. We propose various mid- and far-IR line ratios to break this dependency. Finally, we apply these far-IR diagnostics to a sample of 19 local ultraluminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) observed with Herschel and Spitzer. We find that the gas-phase metallicity in these local ULIRGs is in the range 0.7 < Z_gas/Z_sun < 1.5, which corresponds to 8.5 < 12 + log (O/H) < 8.9. The inferred metallicities agree well with previous estimates for local ULIRGs and this confirms that they lie below the local mass-metallicity relation.

Search for heavy neutrinos at Belle

We report on a search for heavy neutrinos in B-meson decays. The results are obtained using a data sample that contains 772x10^6 BB-bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. No signal is observed and upper limits are set on mixing of heavy neutrinos with left-handed neutrinos of the Standard Model in the mass range 0.5 - 5.0 GeV/c^2.

Constraint on the Ground-state Mass of 21Al and Three-Nucleon Forces

Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al.

Nonlinear Fluid Simulation Study of Stimulated Raman and Brillouin Scatterings in Shock Ignition

We developed a new nonlinear fluid laser-plasma-instability code (FLAME) using a multi-fluid plasma model combined with full electromagnetic wave equations. The completed one-dimensional (1D) version of FLAME was used to study laser-plasma instabilities in shock ignition. The simulations results showed that absolute SRS modes growing near the quarter-critical surface were saturated by Langmuir-wave Decay Instabilities (LDI) and pump depletion. The ion-acoustic waves from LDI acted as seeds of stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS), which displayed a bursting pattern and caused strong pump depletion. Re-scattering of SRS at the 1/16th-critical surface was also observed in a high temperature case. These results largely agreed with corresponding Particle-in-Cell simulations.

Selective decay from a candidate of the $σ$-bond linear-chain state in $^{14}$C

A cluster-transfer experiment $^9$Be($^9$Be,$^{14}$C$^*\rightarrowα$+$^{10}$Be)$α$ was carried out using an incident beam energy of 45 MeV. This reaction channel has a large $Q$-value that favors populating the high-lying states in $^{14}$C and separating various reaction channels. A number of resonant states are reconstructed from the forward emitting $^{10}$Be + $α$ fragments with respect to three sets of well discriminated final states in $^{10}$Be, most of which agree with the previous observations. A state at 22.5(1) MeV in $^{14}$C is found to decay predominantly into the states around 6 MeV in $^{10}$Be daughter nucleus, in line with the unique property of the predicted band head of the $σ$-bond linear-chain molecular states. A new state at 23.5(1) MeV is identified which decays strongly into the first excited state of $^{10}$Be.

Fermi-LAT Observations of High-energy Behind-the-limb Solar Flares

We report on the Fermi-LAT detection of high-energy emission from the behind-the-limb (BTL) solar flares that occurred on 2013 October 11, and 2014 January 6 and September 1. The Fermi-LAT observations are associated with flares from active regions originating behind both the eastern and western limbs, as determined by STEREO. All three flares are associated with very fast coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and strong solar energetic particle events. We present updated localizations of the >100 MeV photon emission, hard X-ray (HXR)and EUV images, and broadband spectra from 10 keV to 10 GeV, as well as microwave spectra. We also provide a comparison of the BTL flares detected by Fermi-LAT with three on-disk flares and present a study of some of the significant quantities of these flares as an attempt to better understand the acceleration mechanisms at work during these occulted flares. We interpret the HXR emission to be due to electron bremsstrahlung from a coronal thin-target loop top with the accelerated electron spectra steepening at semirelativistic energies. The >100 MeV gamma-rays are best described by a pion-decay model resulting from the interaction of protons (and other ions) in a thick-target photospheric source. The protons are believed to have been accelerated (to energies >10 GeV) in the CME environment and precipitate down to the photosphere from the downstream side of the CME shock and landed on the front side of the Sun, away from the original flare site and the HXR emission.

A systematic observational study of radio properties of H2O megamaser Seyfert-2 galaxies

A systematic study is performed on radio properties of H$_{2}$O megamaser host Seyfert 2 galaxies, through multi-band radio continuum observations (at 11cm, 6.0 cm, 3.6 cm, 2.0 cm and 1.3 cm) with the Effelsberg 100-m radio telescope within a total time duration of four days. For comparison, a control Seyfert 2 galaxy sample without detected maser emission was also observed. Spectral indices were determined for those sources for which measurements exist at two adjacent bands assuming a power-law dependence S$_ν\propto ν^{-α}$, where S is the flux density and $ν$ is the frequency. Comparisons of the radio continuum properties between megamaser and non-masing Seyfert 2s show no difference in spectral indices. However, a difference in radio luminosity is statistically significant, i.e. the maser galaxies tend to have higher radio luminosities by a factor of 2 to 3 than the non-masing ones, commonly reaching values above a critical threshold of 10$^{29}$ ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$. This result confirms an earlier conclusion by Zhang et al. (2012), but is based on superior data with respect to the time interval within which the data were obtained, with respect to the observational facility (only one telescope used), the number of frequency bands.

Design and Performance of a Hybrid Fast and Thermal Neutron Detector

We report the performance and characterization of a custom-built hybrid detector consisting of BC501A liquid scintillator for fast neutrons and BC702 scintillator for thermal neutrons. The calibration and the resolution of the BC501A liquid scintillator detector are performed. The event identification via Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) technique is developed in order to distinguish gamma, fast and thermal neutrons. Monte Carlo simulation packages are developed in GEANT4 to obtain actual neutron energy spectrum from the measured recoil spectrum. The developed methods are tested by reconstruction of 241AmBe(α, n) neutron spectrum.

Reemergeing electronic nematicity in heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductors

In correlated electrons system, quantum melting of electronic crystalline phase often gives rise to many novel electronic phases. In cuprates superconductors, melting the Mott insulating phase with carrier doping leads to a quantum version of liquid crystal phase, the electronic nematicity, which breaks the rotational symmetry and exhibits a tight twist with high-temperature superconductivity. Recently, the electronic nematicity has also been observed in Fe-based superconductors. However, whether it shares a similar scenario with its cuprates counterpart is still elusive. Here, by measuring nuclear magnetic resonance in CsFe2As2, a prototypical Fe-based superconductor perceived to have evolved from a Mott insulating phase at 3d5 configuration, we report anisotropic quadruple broadening effect as a direct result of local rotational symmetry breaking. For the first time, clear connection between the Mott insulating phase and the electronic nematicity can be established and generalized to the Fe-based superconductors. This finding would promote a universal understanding on electronic nematicity and its relation with high-temperature superconductivity.

Gate-controlled topological conducting channels in bilayer graphene

The existence of inequivalent valleys K and K' in the momentum space of two-dimensional hexagonal lattices provides a new electronic degree of freedom, the manipulation of which can potentially lead to new types of electronics, in analogy to the role played by electron spin. In materials with broken inversion symmetry, such as an electrically gated bilayer graphene, the momentum-space Berry curvature $Ω$ carries opposite sign in the K and K' valleys. A sign reversal of $Ω$ along an internal boundary of the sheet gives rise to counter-propagating one-dimensional conducting modes encoded with opposite valley indices. These metallic states are topologically protected against backscattering in the absence of valley-mixing scattering, and thus can carry current ballistically. In bilayer graphene, the reversal of $Ω$ can occur at the domain wall of AB and BA stacked domains, or at the line junction of two oppositely gated regions. The latter approach can provide a scalable platform to implement valleytronic operations such as valves and waveguides, but is technically challenging to realize. Here we fabricate a dual-split-gate structure in bilayer graphene and demonstrate transport evidence of the predicted metallic states. They possess a mean free path of up to a few hundred nanometers in the absence of a magnet field. The application of perpendicular magnetic field suppresses backscattering significantly and enables a 400-nanometer-long junction to exhibit conductance close to the ballistic limit of 4 $e^2/h$ at 8 Tesla. Our experiment paves the path to the realization of gate-controlled ballistic valley transport and the development of valleytronic applications in atomically thin materials.

Effective Mass in Bilayer Graphene at Low Carrier Densities: the Role of Potential Disorder and Electron-Electron Interaction

In a two-dimensional electron gas, the electron-electron interaction generally becomes stronger at lower carrier densities and renormalizes the Fermi liquid parameters such as the effective mass of carriers. We combine experiment and theory to study the effective masses of electrons and holes $m^*_e$ and $m^*_h$ in bilayer graphene in the low carrier density regime of order 1 * 10^11 cm^-2. Measurements use temperature-dependent low-field Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are observed in high-mobility hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) supported samples. We find that while $m^*_e$ follows a tight-binding description in the whole density range, $m^*_h$ starts to drop rapidly below the tight-binding description at carrier density n = 6 * 10^11 cm^-2 and exhibits a strong suppression of 30% when n reaches 2 * 10^11 cm^-2. Contributions from electron-electron interaction alone, evaluated using several different approximations, cannot explain the experimental trend. Instead, the effect of potential fluctuation and the resulting electron-hole puddles play a crucial role. Calculations including both the electron-electron interaction and disorder effects explain the experimental data qualitatively and quantitatively. This study reveals an unusual disorder effect unique to two-dimensional semi-metallic systems.

The decay characteristic of $^{22}$Si and its ground-state mass significantly affected by three-nucleon forces

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.

Constraints on Axion couplings from the CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We report the results of searches for solar axions and galactic dark matter axions or axion-like particles with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, using 335.6 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector. The data are compatible with the background model and no excess signals are observed. Limits of solar axions on the model independent coupling $g_{Ae}<2.5\times10^{-11}$ from Compton, bremsstrahlung, atomic-recombination and deexcitation channel and $g^{\text{eff}}_{AN}\times g_{Ae}<6.1\times10^{-17}$ from $^{57}$Fe M1 transition at 90 % confidence level are derived. Within the framework of the DFSZ and KSVZ models, our results exclude the axion mass heavier than 0.9 eV/c$^{2}$ and 173 eV/c$^{2}$, respectively. The derived constraints for dark matter axions below 1 keV improves over the previous results.

Beta-decay study of $T_z=-2$ proton-rich nucleus $^{20}$Mg

The $β$ decay of the drip-line nucleus $^{20}$Mg gives important information on resonances in $^{20}$Na, which are relevant for the astrophysical $rp$-process. A detailed $β$ decay spectroscopic study of $^{20}$Mg was performed by a continuous-implantation method. A detection system was specially developed for charged-particle decay studies, giving improved spectroscopic information including the half-life of $^{20}$Mg, the excitation energies, the branching ratios, and the log $ft$ values for the states in $^{20}$Na populated in the $β$ decay of $^{20}$Mg. A new proton branch was observed and the corresponding excited state in $^{20}$Na was proposed. The large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{20}$Mg and $^{20}$O was reproduced, as well. However, no conclusive conclusion can be draw about the astrophysically interesting 2645~keV resonance in $^{20}$Na due to the limited statistics.
