Evidence of $Υ(1S) \to J/ψ+χ_{c1}$ and search for double-charmonium production in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

Using data samples of $102\times10^6$ $Υ(1S)$ and $158\times10^6$ $Υ(2S)$ events collected with the Belle detector, a first experimental search has been made for double-charmonium production in the exclusive decays $Υ(1S,2S)\rightarrow J/ψ(ψ')+X$, where $X=η_c$, $χ_{cJ} (J=~0,~1,~2)$, $η_c(2S)$, $X(3940)$, and $X(4160)$. No significant signal is observed in the spectra of the mass recoiling against the reconstructed $J/ψ$ or $ψ'$ except for the evidence of $χ_{c1}$ production with a significance of $4.6σ$ for $Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1}$. The measured branching fraction $\BR(Υ(1S)\rightarrow J/ψ+χ_{c1})$ is $(3.90\pm1.21(\rm stat.)\pm0.23 (\rm syst.))\times10^{-6}$. The $90\%$ confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the other modes having a significance of less than $3σ$ are determined. These results are consistent with theoretical calculations using the nonrelativistic QCD factorization approach.

Measurement of Time-Dependent $CP$ Violation in $B^0\to η'K^0$ Decays

We present a measurement of the time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters in $B^0\toη'K^0$ decays. The measurement is based on the full data sample containing $772\times 10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance using the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The measured values of the mixing-induced and direct $CP$ violation parameters are: \begin{align} \sin 2 ϕ^{\rm eff}_1 &= +0.68\pm 0.07 \pm 0.03, \nonumber \\ \mathcal{A}_{η'K^0} &= +0.03\pm 0.05\pm 0.04, \nonumber \end{align} where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The values obtained are the most accurate to date. Furthermore, these results are consistent with our previous measurements and with the world-average value of $\sin 2ϕ_1$ measured in $B^0\to J/ψK^0$ decays.}

Limits on light WIMPs from the CDEX-1 experiment with a p-type point-contact germanium detector at the China Jingping Underground Laboratory

We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments.

Tests on NaI(Tl) crystals for WIMP search at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory

Among the direct search experiments for WIMP dark matter, the DAMA experiment observed an annual modulation signal interpreted as WIMP interactions with 9.2$σ$ significance. However, this result is contradictory with other direct search experiments reporting null signals in the same parameter space allowed by the DAMA observation, necessitating clarification of the origin of the modulation signal observed using the NaI(Tl) crystals of the DAMA experiment independently. Here, we report the first results of NaI(Tl) crystal measurement at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory to grow ultra-low-background NaI(Tl) crystal detectors.

Neutron calibration facility with an Am-Be source for pulse shape discrimination measurement of CsI(Tl) crystals

We constructed a neutron calibration facility based on a 300-mCi Am-Be source in conjunction with a search for weakly interacting massive particle candidates for dark matter. The facility is used to study the response of CsI(Tl) crystals to nuclear recoils induced by neutrons from the Am-Be source and comparing them with the response to electron recoils produced by Compton scattering of 662-keV $γ$-rays from a $^{137}$Cs source. The measured results on pulse shape discrimination (PSD) between nuclear- and electron-recoil events are quantified in terms of quality factors. A comparison with similar result from a neutron reactor demonstrate the feasibility of performing calibrations of PSD measurements using neutrons from a Am-Be source.

The spectrum of isotropic diffuse gamma-ray emission between 100 MeV and 820 GeV

The γ-ray sky can be decomposed into individually detected sources, diffuse emission attributed to the interactions of Galactic cosmic rays with gas and radiation fields, and a residual all-sky emission component commonly called the isotropic diffuse γ-ray background (IGRB). The IGRB comprises all extragalactic emissions too faint or too diffuse to be resolved in a given survey, as well as any residual Galactic foregrounds that are approximately isotropic. The first IGRB measurement with the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (Fermi) used 10 months of sky-survey data and considered an energy range between 200 MeV and 100 GeV. Improvements in event selection and characterization of cosmic-ray backgrounds, better understanding of the diffuse Galactic emission, and a longer data accumulation of 50 months, allow for a refinement and extension of the IGRB measurement with the LAT, now covering the energy range from 100 MeV to 820 GeV. The IGRB spectrum shows a significant high-energy cutoff feature, and can be well described over nearly four decades in energy by a power law with exponential cutoff having a spectral index of $2.32\pm0.02$ and a break energy of $(279\pm52)$ GeV using our baseline diffuse Galactic emission model. The total intensity attributed to the IGRB is $(7.2\pm0.6) \times 10^{-6}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ sr$^{-1}$ above 100 MeV, with an additional $+15$%/$-30$% systematic uncertainty due to the Galactic diffuse foregrounds.

Search for Low-Mass Dark Matter with CsI(Tl) Crystal Detectors

We present a search for low-mass ($\leq 20 GeV/c^{2}$) weakly interacting massive particles(WIMPs), strong candidates of dark matter particles,using the low-background CsI(Tl) detector array of the Korea Invisible Mass Search (KIMS) experiment. With a total data exposure of 24,324.3kg$\cdot$days,we search for WIMP interaction signals produced by nuclei recoiling from WIMP-nuclear elastic scattering with visible energies between 2 and 4keV. The observed energy distribution of candidate events is consistent with null signals, and upper limits of the WIMP-proton spin-independent interaction are set with a 90% confidence level. The observed limit rejects most of the low mass region of parameter space favored by the DAMA annual modulation signal.

Measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell)$ at Belle

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic $B_s^0$ branching fraction in a $121~fb^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(5S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Events containing $B_s^0$ pairs are selected by reconstructing a tag side $D_s^+$ and identifying a signal side lepton $\ell^+$ ($\ell = e, μ$) that is required to have the same-sign charge to ensure that both originate from different $B_s^0$ mesons. The $B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell$ branching fraction is extracted from the ratio of the measured yields of $D_s^+$ mesons and $D_s^+ \ell^+$ pairs and the known production and branching fractions. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction is measured to be $[9.6 \pm 0.4\text{(stat)} \pm 0.7\text{(syst)}]~\%$.

Negative differential resistance: another banana?

Just like the artefact found in ferroelectric hysteresis loops, the nearly identical NDR effect shown in Sr3Co2Fe24O41, TiO2, Al2O3, glass and even banana skins is confirmed to be a kind of water behavior. The combination of water induced tunneling effect, water decomposition and absorption plays a crucial role in the NDR effect. The results and mechanism demonstrated here illustrate that much attention should be paid to the chemical environment when studying electrical properties of materials / devices.

Angular Momentum Exchange by Gravitational Torques and Infall in the Circumbinary Disk of the Protostellar System L1551 NE

We report the ALMA observation of the Class I binary protostellar system L1551 NE in the 0.9-mm continuum, C18O (3-2), and 13CO (3-2) lines at a ~1.6 times higher resolution and a ~6 times higher sensitivity than those of our previous SMA observations, which revealed a r ~300 AU-scale circumbinary disk in Keplerian rotation. The 0.9-mm continuum shows two opposing U-shaped brightenings in the circumbinary disk, and exhibits a depression between the circumbinary disk and the circumstellar disk of the primary protostar. The molecular lines trace non-axisymmetric deviations from Keplerian rotation in the circumbinary disk at higher velocities relative to the systemic velocity, where our previous SMA observations could not detect the lines. In addition, we detect inward motion along the minor axis of the circumbinary disk. To explain the newly-observed features, we performed a numerical simulation of gas orbits in a Roche potential tailored to the inferred properties of L1551 NE. The observed U-shaped dust features coincide with locations where gravitational torques from the central binary system are predicted to impart angular momentum to the circumbinary disk, producing shocks and hence density enhancements seen as a pair of spiral arms. The observed inward gas motion coincides with locations where angular momentum is predicted to be lowered by the gravitational torques. The good agreement between our observation and model indicates that gravitational torques from the binary stars constitute the primary driver for exchanging angular momentum so as to permit infall through the circumbinary disk of L1551 NE.

Magnetic / dielectric anomalies and magnetodielectric / magnetoelectric effects in Z- and W-type hexaferrites

Two kinds of specimens, with the major phase of Sr3Co2Fe24O41 (Sr3Co2Z) and SrCo2Fe16O27 (SrCo2W) hexaferrites respectively, were fabricated through solid-state reaction. The phase composition, magnetic and dielectric properties, magnetodielectric (MD) effect, magnetoelectric (ME) effect and pyroelectric properties were studied. Results show that magnetic and dielectric anomalies are induced by the magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) transition. They can be considered as characteristic properties (e.g., Sr3Co2Z at 370 K) but are not a sufficient condition for the MD and ME coupling. The T-block structure, existing in Sr3Co2Z but absent in SrCo2W, results in the dielectric response with ferroelectric (FE) and magnetic contributions.

Observation of the decay $B^0 \to η' K^*(892)^0$

We report a search for charmless hadronic decays of neutral $B$ mesons to $η' K^{*}(892)^{0}$. The results are based on a 711fb$^{-1}$ data sample that contains $772\times 10^6 B\overline{B}$ pairs, collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We observe the decay for the first time with a significance of 5.0 standard deviations and obtain its branching fraction ${\cal B}[B^0\toη' K^{*}(892)^{0}]=[2.6\pm0.7{\rm (stat)}\pm0.2{\rm (syst)}]\times 10^{-6}$. We also measure the $CP$ violating asymmetry as ${\cal A}_{CP}[B^0\toη' K^{*}(892)^{0}]=-0.22\pm0.29{\rm (stat)}\pm0.07{\rm syst}$.

The China Dark Matter Experiment reports results on light WIMP dark matter searches at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a germanium detector array with a total mass of 20 g. The physics threshold achieved is 177 eVee ("ee" represents electron equivalent energy) at 50% signal efficiency. With 0.784 kg-days of data, exclusion region on spin-independent coupling with the nucleon is derived, improving over our earlier bounds at WIMP mass less than 4.6 GeV.

Measurement of the Branching Fraction Br(Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+)

We present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute branching fraction of the Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+ decay using a data sample of 978 fb^-1 collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The number of Lambda_c+ baryons is determined by reconstructing the recoiling D(*)- anti-p pi+ system in events of the type e+e- -> D(*)- anti-p pi+ Lambda_c+. The branching fraction is measured to be Br(Lambda_c+ -> p K- pi+) = (6.84 +- 0.24^{+0.21}_{-0.27})%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

The Time Structure of Hadronic Showers in highly granular Calorimeters with Tungsten and Steel Absorbers

The intrinsic time structure of hadronic showers influences the timing capability and the required integration time of hadronic calorimeters in particle physics experiments, and depends on the active medium and on the absorber of the calorimeter. With the CALICE T3B experiment, a setup of 15 small plastic scintillator tiles read out with Silicon Photomultipliers, the time structure of showers is measured on a statistical basis with high spatial and temporal resolution in sampling calorimeters with tungsten and steel absorbers. The results are compared to GEANT4 (version 9.4 patch 03) simulations with different hadronic physics models. These comparisons demonstrate the importance of using high precision treatment of low-energy neutrons for tungsten absorbers, while an overall good agreement between data and simulations for all considered models is observed for steel.

Measurement of Branching Fractions and CP Asymmetries in B -> wK Decays and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 -> wKS0

We present a measurement of the branching fractions and charge-parity-(CP-) violating parameters in B -> omega K decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 x 10^(6) BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the branching fractions B(B0 -> omega K0) = (4.5 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.3 (syst)) x 10^(-6), B(B- -> omega K-) = (6.8 +/- 0.4 (stat) +/- 0.4 (syst)) x 10^(-6), which are in agreement with their respective current world averages. For the CP violating parameters, we obtain A(B0 -> omega KS) = -0.36 +/- 0.19 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), S(B0 -> omega KS) = +0.91 +/- 0.32 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), A(B- -> omega K-) = -0.03 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.01 syst), where A and S represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We find no evidence of CP violation in the decay channel B-->omega K-; however, we obtain the first evidence of CP violation in the B0 -> omega KS decay channel at the level of 3.1 standard deviations.

Validation of GEANT4 Monte Carlo Models with a Highly Granular Scintillator-Steel Hadron Calorimeter

Calorimeters with a high granularity are a fundamental requirement of the Particle Flow paradigm. This paper focuses on the prototype of a hadron calorimeter with analog readout, consisting of thirty-eight scintillator layers alternating with steel absorber planes. The scintillator plates are finely segmented into tiles individually read out via Silicon Photomultipliers. The presented results are based on data collected with pion beams in the energy range from 8GeV to 100GeV. The fine segmentation of the sensitive layers and the high sampling frequency allow for an excellent reconstruction of the spatial development of hadronic showers. A comparison between data and Monte Carlo simulations is presented, concerning both the longitudinal and lateral development of hadronic showers and the global response of the calorimeter. The performance of several GEANT4 physics lists with respect to these observables is evaluated.

Performance of the first prototype of the CALICE scintillator strip electromagnetic calorimeter

A first prototype of a scintillator strip-based electromagnetic calorimeter was built, consisting of 26 layers of tungsten absorber plates interleaved with planes of 45x10x3 mm3 plastic scintillator strips. Data were collected using a positron test beam at DESY with momenta between 1 and 6 GeV/c. The prototype's performance is presented in terms of the linearity and resolution of the energy measurement. These results represent an important milestone in the development of highly granular calorimeters using scintillator strip technology. This technology is being developed for a future linear collider experiment, aiming at the precise measurement of jet energies using particle flow techniques.
