Study of B^0 -> rho^0 rho^0 decays, implications for the CKM angle phi_2 and search for other B^0 decay modes with a four-pion final state

We present a study of the branching fraction of the decay B^0->rho0rho0 and the fraction of longitudinally polarized rho0 mesons in this decay. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We find 166 +- 59 B^0 -> rho0 rho0 events (including systematic uncertainties), corresponding to a branching fraction of B(B^0->rho0rho0) = (1.02 +- 0.30 (stat) +- 0.15 (syst)) x 10^{-6} with a significance of 3.4 standard deviations and a longitudinal polarization fraction fL = 0.21^{+0.18}_{-0.22} (stat) +- 0.15 (syst). We use the longitudinal polarization fraction to determine the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix angle phi_2 = (84.9 +- 13.5) degrees through an isospin analysis in the B->rhorho system. We furthermore find 149 +- 49 B^0->f0rho0 events, corresponding to B(B^0->f0rho0) x B(f0->pi+pi-) = (0.78 +- 0.22 (stat) +- 0.11 (syst)) x 10^{-6}, with a significance of 3.1 standard deviations. We find no other significant contribution with the same final state, and set upper limits at 90% confidence level on the (product) branching fractions, B(B^0->pi+pi-pi+pi-)<11.2 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->rho0pi+pi-)<12.0 x 10^{-6}, B(B^0->f0pi+pi-) x B(f0->pi+pi-) <3.0 x 10^{-6} and B(B^0->f0f0) x B(f0->pi+pi-)^{2} < 0.2 x 10^{-6}.

Knowledge-Aided Reweighted Belief Propagation LDPC Decoding using Regular and Irregular Designs

In this paper a new message passing algorithm, which takes advantage of both tree-based re-parameterization and the knowledge of short cycles, is introduced for the purpose of decoding LDPC codes with short block lengths. The proposed algorithm is called variable factor appearance probability belief propagation (VFAP-BP) algorithm and is suitable for wireless communications applications, where both good decoding performance and low-latency are expected. Our simulation results show that the VFAP-BP algorithm outperforms the standard BP algorithm and requires a significantly smaller number of iterations than existing algorithms when decoding both regular and irregular LDPC codes.

Observation of $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ Mixing in $e^+e^-$ Collisions

We observe $D^0-\bar{D}^0$ mixing in the decay $D^0\rightarrow K^+π^-$ using a data sample of integrated luminosity 976 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. We measure the mixing parameters ${x'}^2 = (0.09\pm0.22)\times 10^{-3}$ and $y' = (4.6\pm3.4)\times 10^{-3}$ and the ratio of doubly Cabibbo-suppressed to Cabibbo-favored decay rates $R_D = (3.53\pm0.13)\times 10^{-3}$, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic combined. Our measurement excludes the no-mixing hypothesis at the 5.1 standard deviation level.

Graphene optomechanics realized at microwave frequencies

Cavity optomechanics has served as a platform for studying the interaction between light and micromechanical motion via radiation pressure. Here we observe such phenomena with a graphene mechanical resonator coupled to an electromagnetic mode. We measure thermal motion and back-action cooling in a bilayer graphene resonator coupled to a microwave on-chip cavity. We detect the lowest flexural mode at 24 MHz down to 50 mK, corresponding to roughly mechanical 40 quanta, representing nearly three orders of magnitude lower phonon occupation than recorded to date with graphene resonators.

Locally-Optimized Reweighted Belief Propagation for Decoding LDPC Codes with Finite-Length

In practice, LDPC codes are decoded using message passing methods. These methods offer good performance but tend to converge slowly and sometimes fail to converge and to decode the desired codewords correctly. Recently, tree-reweighted message passing methods have been modified to improve the convergence speed at little or no additional complexity cost. This paper extends this line of work and proposes a new class of locally optimized reweighting strategies, which are suitable for both regular and irregular LDPC codes. The proposed decoding algorithm first splits the factor graph into subgraphs and subsequently performs a local optimization of reweighting parameters. Simulations show that the proposed decoding algorithm significantly outperforms the standard message passing and existing reweighting techniques.

Updated Cross Section Measurement of $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ and $K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ via Initial State Radiation at Belle

The cross sections of the processes $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ and $K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ are measured via initial state radiation at center-of-mass energies between the threshold and 6.0~GeV using a data sample of 980~fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector on or near the $Υ(nS)$ resonances, where $n=$1, 2, ..., 5. The cross sections for $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ are at a few pb level and the average cross section for $e^+ e^- \to K_S^0K_S^0J/ψ$ is $1.8\pm 0.6 (\rm stat.)\pm 0.3 (\rm syst.)$~pb between 4.4 and 5.2~GeV. All of them are consistent with previously published results with improved precision. A search for resonant structures and associated intermediate states in the cross section of the process $e^+ e^- \to K^+ K^- J/ψ$ is performed.

Measurements of Branching Fractions of $τ$ Lepton Decays with one or more $K^{0}_{S}$

We report measurements of branching fractions of $τ$ lepton decays to final states with a $K^{0}_{S}$ meson using a 669 fb$^{-1}$ data sample accumulated with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The inclusive branching fraction is measured to be $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{0}_{S}\ X^{-} ν_τ)=(9.15 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.15) \times 10^{-3}$, where $X^{-}$ can be anything; the exclusive branching fractions are $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (4.16 \pm 0.01 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{-} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (7.40 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.27) \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (1.93 \pm 0.02 \pm 0.07) \times 10^{-3}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to K^{-} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (7.48 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.37)\times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} ν_τ) = (2.33 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.09) \times 10^{-4}$, $\mathcal{B}(τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^{0}_{S} K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ) = (2.00 \pm 0.22 \pm 0.20) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. For each mode, the accuracy is improved over that of pre-$B$-factory measurements by a factor ranging from five to ten. In $τ^{-} \to π^{-} K^0_S K^0_S π^{0} ν_τ$ decays, clear signals for the intermediate states $τ^{-} \to π^- f_{1}(1285)ν_τ$ and $τ^{-} \to K^{*-}K^{0}_{S} π^{0} ν_τ$ are observed.

Search for doubly charmed baryons and study of charmed strange baryons at Belle

We report results of a study of doubly charmed baryons and charmed strange baryons. The analysis is performed using a 980 fb^-1 data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We search for doubly charmed baryons Xi_cc^+(+) with the Lambda_c^+K^-pi^+(pi^+) and Xi_c^0pi^+(pi^+) final states. No significant signal is observed. We also search for two excited charmed strange baryons, Xi_c(3055)^+ and Xi_c(3123)^+ with the Sigma_c^++(2455)K^- and Sigma_c^++(2520)K^- final states. The Xi_c(3055)^+ signal is observed with a significance of 6.6 standard deviations including systematic uncertainty, while no signature of the Xi_c(3123)^+ is seen. We also study properties of the Xi_c(2645)^+ and measure a width of 2.6 +- 0.2 (stat) +- 0.4 (syst) MeV/c^2, which is the first significant determination.

Simulation of motional averaging using a superconducting circuit

The possibility of using a quantum system to simulate another one has been recognized for a long time as an important research direction in quantum information and quantum computing. In Ref. [J. Li et. al, Nat. Commun. 4, 1420 (2013)], a superconducting circuit (a transmon) was employed to simulate a NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) effect known as motional averaging. In this paper we analyze the results of numerical integration of the time evolution of the density matrix of a qubit with random frequency fluctuations, and compare the results with those obtained by using the method of quantum trajectories. We show that both methods produce equivalent results, although some differences may appear in the range of intermediate modulation frequencies.

Shower development of particles with momenta from 1 to 10 GeV in the CALICE Scintillator-Tungsten HCAL

Lepton colliders are considered as options to complement and to extend the physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is an $e^+e^-$ collider under development aiming at centre-of-mass energies of up to 3 TeV. For experiments at CLIC, a hadron sampling calorimeter with tungsten absorber is proposed. Such a calorimeter provides sufficient depth to contain high-energy showers, while allowing a compact size for the surrounding solenoid. A fine-grained calorimeter prototype with tungsten absorber plates and scintillator tiles read out by silicon photomultipliers was built and exposed to particle beams at CERN. Results obtained with electrons, pions and protons of momenta up to 10 GeV are presented in terms of energy resolution and shower shape studies. The results are compared with several GEANT4 simulation models in order to assess the reliability of the Monte Carlo predictions relevant for a future experiment at CLIC.

Measurement of the spectral line shapes for orbital excitations in the Mott insulator CoO using high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We establish the spectral line shape of orbital excitations created by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering for the model Mott insulator CoO. Improved experimental energy resolution reveals that the line shapes are strikingly different from expectations in a first principles-based atomic multiplet model. Extended theoretical simulations are performed to identify the underlying physical origins, which include a pronounced thermal tail reminiscent of anti-Stokes scattering on the energy gain side of excitations, and an essential contribution from interatomic many-body dynamics on the energy loss side of excitations.

Computational Topology for Approximations of Knots

The preservation of ambient isotopic equivalence under piecewise linear (PL) approximation for smooth knots are prominent in molecular modeling and simulation. Sufficient conditions are given regarding: (1) Hausdorff distance, and (2) a sum of total curvature and derivative. High degree Bezier curves are often used as smooth representations, where computational efficiency is a practical concern. Subdivision can produce PL approximations for a given Bézier curve, fulfilling the above two conditions. The primary contributions are: (i) a priori bounds on the number of subdivision iterations sufficient to achieve a PL approximation that is ambient isotopic to the original Bezier curve, and (ii) improved iteration bounds over those previously established.

Optical conductivity of nodal metals

Fermi liquid theory is remarkably successful in describing the transport and optical properties of metals; at frequencies higher than the scattering rate, the optical conductivity adopts the well-known power law behavior $σ_1(ω) \propto ω^{-2}$. We have observed an unusual non-Fermi liquid response $σ_1(ω) \propto ω^{-1\pm 0.2}$ in the ground states of several cuprate and iron-based materials which undergo electronic or magnetic phase transitions resulting in dramatically reduced or nodal Fermi surfaces. The identification of an inverse (or fractional) power-law behavior in the residual optical conductivity now permits the removal of this contribution, revealing the direct transitions across the gap and allowing the nature of the electron-boson coupling to be probed. The non-Fermi liquid behavior in these systems may be the result of a common Fermi surface topology of Dirac cone-like features in the electronic dispersion.

Search for B0 to p Lambdabar pi- gamma at Belle

We search for the charmless B^0 decay with final state particles p Lambdabar pi^- gamma using the full data sample that contains 772 * 10^6 B Bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider. This decay is predicted to proceed predominantly via the b to s gamma radiative penguin process with a high energy photon. No significant signal is found. We set an upper limit of 6.5 * 10^-7 for the branching fraction of B^0 to p Lambdabar pi^- gamma at the 90% confidence level.

Microwave manipulation of electrically injected spin polarized electrons in silicon

We demonstrate microwave manipulation of the spin states of electrically injected spin-polarized electrons in silicon. Although the silicon channel is bounded by ferromagnetic metal films, we show that moderate microwave power can be applied to the devices without altering the device operation significantly. Resonant microwave irradiation is used to induce spin rotation of spin-polarized electrons as they travel across a silicon channel, and the resultant spin polarization is subsequently detected by a ferromagnetic Schottky barrier spin detector. These results demonstrate the potential for combining advanced electron spin resonance techniques to complement the study of semiconductor spintronic devices beyond standard magnetotransport measurements.

A propeller scenario for the gamma-ray emission of low-mass X-ray binaries: The case of XSS J12270-4859

XSS J12270-4859 is the only low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) with a proposed persistent gamma-ray counterpart in the Fermi-LAT domain, 2FGL 1227.7-4853. Here, we present the results of the analysis of recent INTEGRAL observations, aimed at assessing the long-term variability of the hard X-ray emission, and thus the stability of the accretion state. We confirm that the source behaves as a persistent hard X-ray emitter between 2003 and 2012. We propose that XSS J12270-4859 hosts a neutron star in a propeller state, a state we investigate in detail, developing a theoretical model to reproduce the associated X-ray and gamma-ray properties. This model can be understood as being of a more general nature, representing a viable alternative by which LMXBs can appear as gamma-ray sources. In particular, this may apply to the case of millisecond pulsars performing a transition from a state powered by the rotation of their magnetic field, to a state powered by matter in-fall, such as that recently observed from the transitional pulsar PSR J1023+0038. While the surface magnetic field of a typical NS in a LMXB is lower by more than four orders of magnitude than the much more intense fields of neutron stars accompanying high-mass binaries, the radius at which the matter in-flow is truncated in a NS-LMXB system is much lower. The magnetic field at the magnetospheric interface is then orders of magnitude larger at this interface, and as consequence, so is the power to accelerate electrons. We demonstrate that the cooling of the accelerated electron population takes place mainly through synchrotron interaction with the magnetic field permeating the interface, and through inverse Compton losses due to the interaction between the electrons and the synchrotron photons they emit. We found that self-synchrotron Compton processes can explain the high energy phenomenology of XSS J12270-4859.

High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

Measurement of the CP Violation Parameters in B0 -> pi+ pi- Decays

We present a measurement of the time-dependent charge-parity (CP) violation parameters in B0 -> pi+ pi- decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. We obtain the CP violation parameters Acp = +0.33 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) and Scp = -0.64 +/- 0.08 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst), where Acp and Scp represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. Using an isospin analysis including results from other Belle measurements, we find 23.8 < phi2 < 66.8 degrees is disfavored at the 1 sigma level, where phi2 is one of the three interior angles of the CKM unitarity triangle related to B_{u,d} decays.
