Experimental Observation of Kondo-Fano Resonant Tunneling in Silicon-Doped GaAs/AlAs Multiple Quantum Wells

We report experimental observation of Kondo-Fano resonant tunneling in Si-doped GaAs/AlAs multiple quantum wells. The spectrum of differential tunneling conductance at low bias shows a strong temperature dependent resonance, whose peak is split in the presence of a magnetic field, characteristic of a Kondo resonance. The data is well explained as a resonant tunneling of conduction electrons at the Fermi level through the doped silicon impurity states inside the wells by using an impurity Anderson model. The Coulomb blockade resonance of the impurity states induces a Fano dip above the Kondo resonance.

Valley splitting of Si/SiGe heterostructures in tilted magnetic fields

We have investigated the valley splitting of two-dimensional electrons in high quality Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$ heterostructures under tilted magnetic fields. For all the samples in our study, the valley splitting at filling factor $ν=3$ ($Δ_3$) is significantly different before and after the coincidence angle, at which energy levels cross at the Fermi level. On both sides of the coincidence, a linear density dependence of $Δ_3$ on the electron density was observed, while the slope of these two configurations differs by more than a factor of two. We argue that screening of the Coulomb interaction from the low-lying filled levels, which also explains the observed spin-dependent resistivity, is responsible for the large difference of $Δ_3$ before and after the coincidence.

Tunneling magnetoresistance in devices based on epitaxial NiMnSb with uniaxial anisotropy

We demonstrate tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) junctions based on a tri layer system consisting of an epitaxial NiMnSb, aluminum oxide and CoFe tri layer. The junctions show a tunnelling magnetoresistance of Delta R/R of 8.7% at room temperature which increases to 14.7% at 4.2K. The layers show clear separate switching and a small ferromagnetic coupling. A uniaxial in plane anisotropy in the NiMnSb layer leads to different switching characteristics depending on the direction in which the magnetic field is applied, an effect which can be used for sensor applications.

Low frequency noise statistics for the breakdown characterization of ultra-thin gate oxides

We have investigated the statistics of low frequency noise in the tunneling current of ultrathin oxides (2.5nm-4nm) in metal oxide semiconductor capacitors as a function of the applied voltage stress. The statistical analysis includes (i) non-Gaussianity (nG), which is a measure of the degree of temporal correlation in the noise, and (ii) ratio of integrated noise power to the DC leakage current (R). The occurrence of high peaks in nG indicates the appearance of new percolation paths, and the subsequent conduction through these paths is indicated by R. Our results show that the nG and R characteristics are generic for the oxides of different thickness and growth quality and have the potential, in conjunction with leakage itself, of being used as a prognosticator of oxide reliability.

Strain induced half-metal to semiconductor transition in GdN

We have investigated the electronic structure and magnetic properties of GdN as a function of unit cell volume. Based on the first-principles calculations of GdN, we observe that there is a transformation in conduction properties associated with the volume increase: first from halfmetallic to semi-metallic, then ultimately to semiconducting. We show that applying stress can alter the carrier concentration as well as mobility of the holes and electrons in the majority spin channel. In addition, we found that the exchange parameters depend strongly on lattice constant, thus the Curie temperature of this system can be enhanced by applying stress or doping impurities.

Isostructural Phase Transition of TiN Under High Pressure

In situ high-pressure energy dispersive x-ray diffraction experiments on polycrystalline powder TiN with NaCl-type structure have been conducted with the pressure up to 30.1 GPa by using the diamond anvil cell instrument with synchrotron radiation at room tempearture. The experimental results suggested that an isostructural phase transition might exist at about 7 GPa as revealed by the discontinuity of V/V0 with pressure.

The Cryogenic Target for the G$^0$ Experiment at Jefferson Lab

A cryogenic horizontal single loop target has been designed, built, tested and operated for the G$^0$ experiment in Hall C at Jefferson Lab. The target cell is 20 cm long, the loop volume is 6.5 l and the target operates with the cryogenic pump fully immersed in the fluid. The target has been designed to operate at 30 Hz rotational pump speed with either liquid hydrogen or liquid deuterium. The high power heat exchanger is able to remove 1000 W of heat from the liquid hydrogen, while the nominal electron beam with current of 40 $μ$A and energy of 3 GeV deposits about 320 W of heat into the liquid. The increase in the systematic uncertainty due to the liquid hydrogen target is negligible on the scale of a parity violation experiment. The global normalized yield reduction for 40 $μ$A beam is about 1.5 % and the target density fluctuations contribute less than 238 ppm (parts per million) to the total asymmetry width, typically about 1200 ppm, in a Q$^2$ bin.

220 fs Er-Yb:glass laser mode-locked by a broadband low-loss Si/Ge saturable absorber

We demonstrate femtosecond performance of an ultra-broadband high-index-contrast saturable Bragg reflector consisting of a silicon/silicon-dioxide/germanium structure that is fully compatible with CMOS processing. This device offers a reflectivity bandwidth of over 700 nm and sub-picosecond recovery time of the saturable loss. It is used to achieve mode-locking of an Er-Yb:glass laser centered at 1540 nm, generating 220 fs pulses, with the broadest output spectrum to date.

Localization in the non-analytic quantum kicked systems

Numerical investigations on non-analytic quantum kicked systems are presented. A new type of localization - power-law localization is found to be universal in the nonanalytic systems. With increasing the perturbation strength, a transition from perturbative localization to pseudo-integrable system, to dynamical localization and to complete extension is clearly demonstrated. The dependence of the localization length on perturbation is given in different parameter regimes.

Giant spin-orbit splitting in a HgTe quantum well

We have investigated beating patterns in Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations for HgTe/Hg_{0.3}Cd_{0.7}Te(001) quantum wells with electron densities of 2 to 3 X 10^{12} cm^{-2}. Up to 12 beating nodes have been observed at magnetic fields between 0.9 and 6 T. Zero magnetic field spin-orbit splitting energies up to 30 meV have been directly determined from the node positions as well as from the intersection of self-consistently calculated Landau levels. These values, which exceed the thermal broadening of Landau levels, k_B T, at room temperature, are in good agreement with Rashba spin-orbit splitting energies calculated by means of an 8 X 8 kp Kane model. The experimental Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are also in good agreement with numerical simulations based on this model.

Current heating of a magnetic 2DEG in HgMnTe/HgCdTe quantum wells

Heating caused by electrons with excess kinetic energy has been investigated in a magnetic two-dimensional electron gas, M2DEG, in HgMnTe/HgCdTe(001) quantum wells. The temperature of the Mn ions, T_Mn, has been determined by the node positions in the beating pattern in Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The experimental dependence of T_Mn on current and therefore on electron temperature, is in excellent agreement with a rate equation model. Results with this model show that the energy transfer rate from the electrons to the Mn system is proportional to the Mn concentration.

RF Surface Resistance of a HIPped MgB2 Sample at 21 GHz

Magnesium diboride (MgB2) is attractive for RF cavity application for particle accelerators because it might not show an increase of RF surface losses at high magnetic surface fields, a phenomenon that has prevented high-Tc superconducting materials such as YBCO from being used for this application. We have measured the RF surface resistance (Rs) at 21 GHz of a MgB2 sample fabricated using Hot Isostatic Press (HIP) at 200 MPa and 1000 C. The results show that polishing with 0.1-micron diamond lapping film followed by a 1500-psi DI water rinse in a clean room reduced the Rs by a factor of 6.2 at 15 K and it is the lowest compared to other published data. The Rs data near the lowest temperature (~13 K) scatter between 0.6 and 1.3 mOhm. The penetration depth and energy gap were estimated to be 263 nm and 1.9-2.7, respectively, for the polished surface.

Molecular dynamics simulation of the order-disorder phase transition in solid NaNO$_2$

We present molecular dynamics simulations of solid NaNO$_2$ using pair potentials with the rigid-ion model. The crystal potential surface is calculated by using an \emph{a priori} method which integrates the \emph{ab initio} calculations with the Gordon-Kim electron gas theory. This approach is carefully examined by using different population analysis methods and comparing the intermolecular interactions resulting from this approach with those from the \emph{ab initio} Hartree-Fock calculations. Our numerics shows that the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition in solid NaNO$_2$ is triggered by rotation of the nitrite ions around the crystallographical c axis, in agreement with recent X-ray experiments [Gohda \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{63}, 14101 (2000)]. The crystal-field effects on the nitrite ion are also addressed. Remarkable internal charge-transfer effect is found.

Interplay of Rashba, Zeeman and Landau splitting in a magnetic two dimensional electron gas

The transport properties of a magnetic two dimensional electron gas consisting of a modulation doped n type HgMnTe/HgCdTe quantum well, QW, have been investigated. By analyzing the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations and the node positions of their beating patterns, we have been able to separate the gate voltage dependent Rashba spin-orbit splitting from the temperature dependent giant Zeeman splitting. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the Rashba spin-orbit splitting is larger than or comparable to the $sp-d$ exchange interaction induced giant Zeeman splitting in this magnetic 2DEG even at moderately high magnetic fields.

Parity-Violating $Δ$(1232) Electroweak Production: Axial Structure and New Physics

We consider prospects for studying the parity-violating electroweak excitation of the $Δ(1232) $ resonance with polarized electron scattering (see nucl-th/9801025). We discuss the experimental feasibility and theoretical interpretability of such a measurement as well as the prospective implications for hadron structure theory. We also analyze the extent to which a PV $N\toΔ$ measurement could constrain various extensions of the Standard Model.

Gauge Dyonic Strings and Their Global Limit

We show that six-dimensional supergravity coupled to tensor and Yang-Mills multiplets admits not one but two different theories as global limits, one of which was previously thought not to arise as a global limit and the other of which is new. The new theory has the virtue that it admits a global anti-self-dual string solution obtained as the limit of the curved-space gauge dyonic string, and can, in particular, describe tensionless strings. We speculate that this global model can also represent the worldvolume theory of coincident branes. We also discuss the Bogomol'nyi bounds of the gauge dyonic string and show that, contrary to expectations, zero eigenvalues of the Bogomol'nyi matrix do not lead to enhanced supersymmetry and that negative tension does not necessarily imply a naked singularity.

Parity-Violating Excitation of the Δ(1232): Hadron Structure and New Physics

We consider prospects for studying the parity-violating (PV) electroweak excitation of the Δ(1232) resonance with polarized electron scattering. Given present knowledge of Standard Model parameters, such PV experiments could allow a determination of the N -> Δelectroweak helicity amplitudes. We discuss the experimental feasibility and theoretical interpretability of such a determination as well as the prospective implications for hadron structure theory. We also analyze the extent to which a PV N -> Δmeasurement could constrain various extensions of the Standard Model.
