Odd parity charge density-wave scattering in cuprates

We investigate a model where superconducting electrons are coupled to a frequency dependent charge-density wave (CDW) order parameter Delta(w). Our approach can reconcile the simultaneous existence of low energy Bogoljubov quasiparticles and high energy electronic order as observed in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments. The theory accounts for the contrast reversal in the STM spectra between positive and negative bias observed above the pairing gap. An intrinsic relation between scattering rate and inhomogeneities follows naturally.

Inhomogeneous states in two-dimensional frustrated phase separation

We derive the phase diagram of a paradigmatic model of Coulomb frustrated phase separation in two-dimensional systems with negative short-range electronic compressibility. We consider the system subject either to the truly three-dimensional long-range Coulomb interaction (LRC) and to a two-dimensional LRC with logarithmic-like behavior. In both cases we find that the transition from the homogeneous phase to the inhomogeneous phase is generically first-order except for a critical point. Close to the critical point, inhomogeneities arrange in a triangular lattice with a subsequent first-order topological transition to stripe-like objects by lowering the Coulomb frustration. A proliferation of inhomogeneities which have inside smaller inhomogeneities is expected near all the transition lines in systems embedded in the three-dimensional LRC alone.

Incommensurability and spin excitations of diagonal stripes in cuprates

Based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in strongly underdoped lanthanum cuprates originates from antiferromagnetic domain walls (stripes). Calculation of the dynamic spin response for stripes in the diagonal phase yields the characteristic hour glass dispersion with the crossing of low energy Goldstone and high-energy branches at a characteristic energy Ecross at the antiferromagnetic wave-vector Q_{AF}. The high energy part is close to the parent antiferromagnet. Our results suggest that inelastic neutron scattering experiments on strongly underdoped lanthanum cuprates can be understood as due to a mixture of bond centered and site centered stripe configurations with substantial disorder.

Fermi surface dichotomy on systems with fluctuating order

We investigate the effect of a dynamical collective mode coupled with quasiparticles at specific wavevectors only. This coupling describes the incipient tendency to order and produces shadow spectral features at high energies, while leaving essentially untouched the low energy quasiparticles. This allows to interpret seemingly contradictory experiments on underdoped cuprates, where many converging evidences indicate the presence of charge (stripe or checkerboard) order, which remains instead elusive in the Fermi surface obtained from angle-resolved photoemission experiments.

Universality classes for Coulomb frustrated phase separation

We identify two "universality" classes in the Coulomb frustrated phase separation phenomenon. They correspond to two different kind of electronic compressibility anomalies often encountered in strongly correlated electronic systems. We discuss differences and similarities of their corresponding phase diagrams in two- and three-dimensional systems.

Competing orders in FeAs layers

Using the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation and Landau theory we identify possible phases competing with superconductivity in FeAs layers. We find that close to half-filling the transition from the paramagnet to the magnetically ordered phase is first-order making anharmonicities relevant and leading to a rich phase diagram. Between the already known one dimensionally modulated magnetic stripe phase and the paramagnet we find a new phase which has the same structure factor as the former but in which magnetic moments at nearest-neighbor sites are at right angles making electrons to acquire a non trivial phase when circulating a plaquette at strong coupling. Another competing phase has magnetic and charge order and may be stabilized by charged impurities.

Charge instabilities and electron-phonon interaction in the Hubbard-Holstein model

We consider the Hubbard-Holstein model in the adiabatic limit to investigate the effects of electron-electron interactions on the electron-phonon coupling. To this aim we compute at any momentum and filling the static charge susceptibility of the Hubbard model within the Gutzwiller approximation and we find that electron-electron correlations effectively screen the electron coupling to the lattice. This screening is more effective at large momenta and, as a consequence, the charge-density wave phase due to the usual Peierls instability of the Fermi surface momenta is replaced by a phase-separation instability when the correlations are sizable.

Phase diagram for Coulomb-frustrated phase separation in systems with negative short-range compressibility

Using numerical techniques and asymptotic expansions we obtain the phase diagram of a paradigmatic model of Coulomb frustrated phase separation in systems with negative short-range compressibility. The transition from the homogeneous phase to the inhomogeneous phase is generically first order in isotropic three-dimensional systems except for a critical point. Close to the critical point, inhomogeneities are predicted to form a BCC lattice with subsequent transitions to a triangular lattice of rods and a layered structure. Inclusion of a strong anisotropy allows for second- and first-order transition lines joined by a tricritical point.

Time-dependent Gutzwiller theory of pairing fluctuations in the Hubbard model

We present a method to compute pairing fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller approximation (GA). Our investigations are based on a charge-rotational invariant GA energy functional which is expanded up to second order in the pair fluctuations. Equations of motion for the fluctuations lead to a renormalized ladder type approximation. Both spectral functions and corrections to static quantities, like the ground-state energy, are computed. The quality of the method is examined for the single-band Hubbard model where we compare the dynamical pairing correlations for s- and d-wave symmetries with exact diagonalizations and find a significant improvement with respect to analogous calculations done within the standard Hartree-Fock ladder approximation. The technique has potential applications in the theory of Auger spectroscopy, superconductivity, and cold atom physics.

Coarse grained models in Coulomb-frustrated phase separation

Competition between interactions on different length scales leads to self-organized textures in classical as well as quantum systems. This pattern formation phenomenon has been invoked to explain some intriguing properties of a large variety of strongly correlated electronic systems that includes for example high temperature superconductors and colossal magnetoresistance manganites. We classify the more common situations in which Coulomb frustrated phase separation can occur and review their properties.

Theory of antibound states in partially filled narrow band systems

We present a theory of the dynamical two-particle response function in the Hubbard model based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. The results are in excellent agreement with exact diagonalization on small clusters and give reliable results even for high densities, where the usual ladder approximation breaks down. We apply the theory to the computation of antibound states relevant for Auger spectroscopy and cold atom physics. A special bonus of the theory is its computational simplicity.

Intermediate scale phenomena in cuprates

After 20 years of research the low energy physics of cuprates remains a mystery. It is generally accepted that a three band Hamiltonian with Cu's and O's orbitals should contain the essential physics so we can say that there is consensus at the length scale of the Cu-O distance but there is disagreement when it comes to describe higher length scales or to set up a low energy model. Here we present computations of cuprates which accurately describe the physics arising at scales of up to several lattice constants. We review the comparison of our results with different proves as resonant X-ray scattering, scanning tunneling microscopy, optical conductivity and magnetic neutron scattering.

Screening effects in Coulomb frustrated phase separation

We solve a model of phase separation among two competing phases frustrated by the long-range Coulomb interaction in two and three dimensions (2D/3D) taking into account finite compressibility effects. In the limit of strong frustration in 2D, we recover the results of R. Jamei, S. Kivelson, and B. Spivak, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 056805 (2005) and the system always breaks into domains in a narrow range of densities, no matter how big is the frustration. For weak frustration in 2D and for arbitrary frustration in 3D the finite compressibility of the phases is shown to play a fundamental role. Our results clarify the different role of screening in 2D and 3D systems. We discuss the thermodynamic stability of the system near the transition to the phase separated state and the possibility to observe it in real systems.

Quantum Lifshitz point in the infinite dimensional Hubbard model

We show that the Gutzwiller variational wave function is surprisingly accurate for the computation of magnetic phase boundaries in the infinite dimensional Hubbard model. This allows us to substantially extend known phase diagrams. For both the half-hypercubic and the hypercubic lattice a large part of the phase diagram is occupied by an incommensurate phase, intermediate between the ferromagnetic and the paramagnetic phase. In case of the hypercubic lattice the three phases join at a new quantum Lifshitz point at which the order parameter is critical and the stiffness vanishes.

Unified description of charge and spin excitations of stripes in cuprates

We study stripes in cuprates within the one-band and the three-band Hubbard model. Magnetic and charge excitations are described within the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. A variety of experiments (charge profile from resonant soft X-ray scattering, incommensurability vs. doping, optical excitations, magnetic excitations, etc.) are described within the same approach.

Checkerboard and stripe inhomogeneities in cuprates

We systematically investigate charge-ordering phases by means of a restricted and unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation to the single-band Hubbard model with nearest ($t$) and next-nearest neighbor hopping ($t'$). When $|t'/t|$ is small, as appropriate for ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$, stripes are found, whereas in compounds with larger $|t'/t|$ (such as ${\rm Ca_{2-x}Na_x CuO_2Cl_2}$ and ${\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}}$) checkerboard structures are favored. In contrast to the linear doping dependence found for stripes the charge periodicity of checkerboard textures is locked to 4 unit cells over a wide doping range. In addition we find that checkerboard structures are favored at surfaces.

Doping dependence of spin excitations in the stripe phase of high-Tc superconductors

Based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation for the extended Hubbard model we calculate the energy and momentum dependence of spin excitations for striped ground states. Our starting point correctly reproduces the observed doping dependence of the incommensurability in La-based cuprates and the dispersion of magnetic modes in the insulating parent compound. This allows us to make quantitative predictions for the doping evolution of the dispersion of magnetic modes in the stripe phase including the energy and intensity of the resonance peak as well as the velocity of the spin-wave like Goldstone mode. In the underdoped regime $n_h<1/8$ we find a weak linear dependence of $ω_{res}$ on doping whereas the resonance energy significantly shifts to higher values when the charge concentration in the stripes starts to deviate from half-filling for $n_h>1/8$. The velocity $c$ is non-monotonous with a minimum at 1/8 in coincidence with a well known anomaly in $T_c$. Our calculations are in good agreement with available experimental data. We also compare our results with analogous computations based on linear spin-wave theory.
