Photoproduction of $ω$ mesons on nuclei near the production threshold

The photoproduction of $ω$ mesons on LH_2, C and Nb has been studied for incident photon energies from 900 to 1300 MeV using the CB/TAPS detector at ELSA. The $ω$ line shape does not show any significant difference between the LH_2 and the Nb targets. The data are compared with results of transport calculations that predict a sensitivity of the $ω$ line shape to in-medium modifications near the production threshold on a free nucleon of $E_γ^{lab}$ = 1109 MeV.}

In-medium $ω$ mass from the $γ+ Nb \to π^{0}γ+ X$ reaction

Data on the photoproduction of $ω$ mesons on nuclei have been re-analyzed in a search for in-medium modifications. The data were taken with the Crystal Barrel(CB)/TAPS detector system at the ELSA accelerator facility in Bonn. First results from the analysis of the data set were published by D. Trnka et al. in Phys. Rev. Lett 94 (2005) 192303 \cite{david}, claiming a lowering of the $ω$ mass in the nuclear medium by 14$%$ at normal nuclear matter density. The extracted $ω$ line shape was found to be sensitive to the background subtraction. For this reason a re-analysis of the same data set has been initiated and a new method has been developed to reduce the background and to determine the shape and absolute magnitude of the background directly from the data. Details of the re-analysis and of the background determination are described. The $ω$ signal on the $Nb$ target, extracted in the re-analysis, does not show a deviation from the corresponding line shape on a $LH_2$ target, measured as reference. The earlier claim of an in-medium mass shift is thus not confirmed. The sensitivity of the $ω$ line shape to different in-medium modification scenarios is discussed.

A Spitzer-Selected Galaxy Cluster at z=1.62

We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.62 located in the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey XMM-LSS field. This structure was selected solely as an overdensity of galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors, satisfying [3.6]-[4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. Photometric redshifts derived from Subaru XMM Deep Survey (BViz-bands), UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Ultra-Deep Survey (UKIDSS-UDS, JK-bands), and from the Spitzer Public UDS survey (3.6-8.0 micron) show that this cluster corresponds to a surface density of galaxies at z ~ 1.6 that is more than 20 sigma above the mean at this redshift. We obtained optical spectroscopic observations of galaxies in the cluster region using IMACS on the Magellan telescope. We measured redshifts for seven galaxies in the range z=1.62-1.63 within 2.8 arcmin (<1.4 Mpc) of the astrometric center of the cluster. A posteriori analysis of the XMM data in this field reveal a weak (4 sigma) detection in the [0.5-2 keV] band compatible with the expected thermal emission from such a cluster. The color-magnitude diagram of the galaxies in this cluster shows a prominent red-sequence, dominated by a population of red galaxies with (z-J) > 1.7 mag. The photometric redshift probability distributions for the red galaxies are strongly peaked at z=1.62, coincident with the spectroscopically confirmed galaxies. The rest-frame (U-B) color and scatter of galaxies on the red-sequence are consistent with a mean luminosity-weighted age of 1.2 +/- 0.1 Gyr, yielding a formation redshift z_f = 2.35 +/- 0.10, and corresponding to the last significant star-formation period in these galaxies.

Photoproduction of $η$ and $η\prime$ Mesons off Protons

Total and differential cross sections for $η$ and $η^\prime$ photoproduction off the proton have been determined with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for photon energies between 0.85 and 2.55 GeV. The $η$ mesons are detected in their two neutral decay modes, $η\toγγ$ and $η\to 3π^0\to 6γ$, and for the first time, cover the full angular range in $\rm cos θ_{cm}$ of the $η$ meson. These new $η$ photoproduction data are consistent with the earlier CB-ELSA results. The $η^\prime$ mesons are observed in their neutral decay to $π^0π^0η\to 6γ$ and also extend the coverage in angular range.

HST Morphologies of z~2 Dust Obscured Galaxies I: Power-law Sources

We present high spatial resolution optical and near-infrared imaging obtained using the ACS, WFPC2 and NICMOS cameras aboard the Hubble Space Telescope of 31 24um--bright z~2 Dust Obscured Galaxies (DOGs) identified in the Bootes Field of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. Although this subset of DOGs have mid-IR spectral energy distributions dominated by a power-law component suggestive of an AGN, all but one of the galaxies are spatially extended and not dominated by an unresolved component at rest-frame UV or optical wavelengths. The observed V-H and I-H colors of the extended components are 0.2-3 magnitudes redder than normal star-forming galaxies. All but 1 have axial ratios >0.3, making it unlikely that DOGs are composed of an edge-on star-forming disk. We model the spatially extended component of the surface brightness distributions of the DOGs with a Sersic profile and find effective radii of 1-6 kpc. This sample of DOGs is smaller than most sub-millimeter galaxies (SMGs), but larger than quiescent high-redshift galaxies. Non-parametric measures (Gini and M20) of DOG morphologies suggest that these galaxies are more dynamically relaxed than local ULIRGs. We estimate lower limits to the stellar masses of DOGs based on the rest-frame optical photometry and find that these range from ~10^(9-11) M_sun. If major mergers are the progenitors of DOGs, then these observations suggest that DOGs may represent a post-merger evolutionary stage.

Photoproduction of eta-mesons off nuclei for Eg < 2.2 GeV

Photoproduction of $η$ mesons off $^{12}$C, $^{40}$Ca, $^{93}$Nb, and $^{nat}$Pb nuclei has been measured with a tagged photon beam with energies between 0.6 and 2.2 GeV. The experiment was performed at the Bonn ELSA accelerator with the combined setup of the Crystal Barrel and TAPS calorimeters. It aimed at the in-medium properties of the S$_{11}$(1535) nucleon resonance and the study of the absorption properties of nuclear matter for $η$ mesons. Careful consideration was given to contributions from $ηπ$ final states and secondary production mechanisms of $η$-mesons e.g. from inelastic $πN$ reactions of intermediate pions. The analysis of the mass number scaling shows that the nuclear absorption cross section $σ_{Nη}$ for $η$ mesons is constant over a wide range of the $η$ momentum. The comparison of the excitation functions to data off the deuteron and to calculations in the framework of a BUU-model show no unexplained in-medium modifications of the S$_{11}$(1535).

Linearly polarised photon beams at ELSA and measurement of the beam asymmetry in pi^0-photoproduction off the proton

At the electron accelerator ELSA a linearly polarised tagged photon beam is produced by coherent bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. Orientation and energy range of the linear polarisation can be deliberately chosen by accurate positioning of the crystal with a goniometer. The degree of polarisation is determined by the form of the scattered electron spectrum. Good agreement between experiment and expectations on basis of the experimental conditions is obtained. Polarisation degrees of P = 40% are typically achieved at half of the primary electron energy. The determination of P is confirmed by measuring the beam asymmetry, Σ, in pi^0 photoproduction and a comparison of the results to independent measurements using laser backscattering.

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons of the neutron

Quasi-free photoproduction of eta-mesons off nucleons bound in the deuteron has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector for incident photon energies up to 2.5 GeV at the Bonn ELSA accelerator. The eta-mesons have been detected in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons, which allows a detailed comparison of the quasi-free n(gamma, eta)n and p(gamma, eta)p reactions. The excitation function for eta-production off the neutron shows a pronounced bump-like structure at W=1.68 GeV (E_g ~ 1 GeV), which is absent for the proton.

Modification of the $ω$-Meson Lifetime in Nuclear Matter

The photo production of $ω$ mesons on the nuclei C, Ca, Nb and Pb has been measured using the Crystal Barrel/TAPS detector at the ELSA tagged photon facility in Bonn. The dependence of the $ω$ meson cross section on the nuclear mass number has been compared with three different types of models, a Glauber analysis, a BUU analysis of the Giessen theory group and a calculation by the Valencia theory group. In all three cases, the inelastic $ω$ width is found to be $130-150 \rm{MeV/c^2}$ at normal nuclear matter density for an average 3-momentum of 1.1 GeV/c. In the restframe of the $ω$ meson, this inelastic $ω$ width corresponds to a reduction of the $ω$ lifetime by a factor $\approx 30$. For the first time, the momentum dependent $ω$N cross section has been extracted from the experiment and is in the range of 70 mb.

N* and Delta* decays into N pi0 pi0

Decays of baryon resonances in the second and the third resonance region into N pi0 pi0 are studied by photoproduction of two neutral pions off protons. Partial decay widths of N* and Delta* resonances decaying into Delta(1232) pi, N(ππ)_{S}, N(1440)P_{11} pi, and N(1520)D_{13} pi are determined in a partial wave analysis of this data, and data from other reactions. Several partial decay widths were not known before. Interesting decay patterns are observed which are not even qualitatively reproduced by quark model calculations. In the second resonance region, decays into Delta(1232) pi dominate clearly. The N(ππ)_{S}-wave provides a significant contribution to the cross section, especially in the third resonance region. The P_{13}(1720) properties found here are at clear variance to PDG values.

The Faint and Extremely Red K-band Selected Galaxy Population in the DEEP2/Palomar Fields

We present in this paper an analysis of the faint and red near-infrared selected galaxy population found in near-infrared imaging from the Palomar Observatory Wide-Field Infrared Survey. This survey covers 1.53 deg^2 to 5-sigma detection limits of K_vega = 20.5-21 and J_vega = 22.5, and overlaps with the DEEP2 spectroscopic redshift survey. We discuss the details of this NIR survey, including our J and K band counts. We show that the K-band galaxy population has a redshift distribution that varies with K-magnitude, with most K < 17 galaxies at z < 1.5 and a significant fraction (38.3+/-0.3%) of K > 19 systems at z > 1.5. We further investigate the stellar masses and morphological properties of K-selected galaxies, particularly extremely red objects, as defined by (R-K) > 5.3 and (I-K) > 4. One of our conclusions is that the ERO selection is a good method for picking out galaxies at z > 1.2, and within our magnitude limits, the most massive galaxies at these redshifts. The ERO limit finds 75% of all M_* > 10^{11} M_0 galaxies at z ~ 1.5 down to K_vega = 19.7. We further find that the morphological break-down of K < 19.7 EROs is dominated by early-types (57+/-3%) and peculiars (34+/-3%). However, about a fourth of the early-types are distorted ellipticals, and within CAS parameter space these bridge the early-type and peculiar population, suggesting a morphological evolutionary sequence. We also investigate the use of a (I-K) > 4 selection to locate EROs, finding that it selects galaxies at slightly higher average redshifts ( = 1.43+/-0.32) than the (R-K) > 5.3 limit with = 1.28+/-0.23. Finally, by using the redshift distribution of K < 20 selected galaxies, and the properties of our EROs, we are able to rule out all monolithic collapse models for the formation of massive galaxies.

The Properties and Evolution of a K-band Selected Sample of Massive Galaxies at z~0.4 - 2 in the Palomar/DEEP2 Survey

We present the results of a study on the properties and evolution of massive (M_* > 10^11 M_0) galaxies at z~0.4 - 2 utilising Keck spectroscopy, near-Infrared Palomar imaging, and Hubble, Chandra, and Spitzer data covering fields targeted by the DEEP2 galaxy spectroscopic survey. Our sample is K band selected based on wide-area NIR imaging from the Palomar Observatory Wide-Field Infrared Survey, which covers 1.53 deg^2 to K_s,vega~20.5. Our major findings include: (i) statistically the mass and number densities of M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies show little evolution between z = 0 - 1, and from z ~ 0 - 2 for M_* > 10^11.5 M_0 galaxies. (ii) Using Hubble ACS imaging, we find that M_* > 10^11 selected galaxies show a nearly constant elliptical fraction of ~70-90% at all redshifts. The remaining objects are peculiars possibly undergoing mergers at z > 0.8, while spirals dominate the remainder at lower redshifts. (iii) We find that only a fraction (~60%) of massive galaxies with M_* > 10^11 M_0 are on the red-sequence at z~1.4, while nearly 100% evolve onto it by z~0.4. (iv) By utilising Spitzer MIPS imaging and [OII] line fluxes we argue that M_* > 10^11.5 galaxies have a steeply declining star formation rate density ~(1+z)^6. By examining the contribution of star formation to the evolution of the mass function, as well as the merger history through the CAS parameters, we determine that M_* >10^11 M_0 galaxies undergo on average 0.9^+0.7_-0.5 major mergers at 0.4 < z < 1.4. (v) A high (5%) fraction of all M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies are X-ray emitters. Roughly half of these are morphologically distorted ellipticals or peculiars. We compare our results with the Millennium simulation, finding that the number and mass densities of M_* > 10^11.5 M_0 galaxies are under predicted by a factor of > 100.

AEGIS: A Panchromatic Study of IRAC-selected Extremely Red Objects with Confirmed Spectroscopic Redshifts

We study 87 Extremely Red Objects (EROs), selected both to have color redder than R-[3.6] = 4.0, and to have confirmed spectroscopic redshifts. Together, these two constraints result in this sample populating a fairly narrow redshift range at 0.76 < z < 1.42. The key new ingredient included here is deep Spitzer Space Telescope InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) data. Based on [3.6]-[8.0] color, we demonstrate that it is possible to classify EROs into early-type, dusty starburst, or power-law (AGN) types. We present ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) and Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images, both of which support our simple IRAC color classification.

The All-wavelength Extended Groth Strip International Survey (AEGIS) Data Sets

In this the first of a series of Letters, we present a description of the panchromatic data sets that have been acquired in the Extended Groth Strip region of the sky. Our survey, the All-wavelength Extended Groth strip International Survey (AEGIS), is intended to study the physical properties and evolutionary processes of galaxies at z ~ 1. It includes the following deep, wide-field imaging data sets: Chandra/ACIS X-ray (0.5 - 10 keV), GALEX ultraviolet (1200 - 2500 Angstrom), CFHT/MegaCam Legacy Survey optical (3600 - 9000 Angstroms), CFHT/CFH12K optical (4500 - 9000 Angstroms), Hubble Space Telescope/ACS optical (4400 - 8500 Angstroms), Palomar/WIRC near-infrared (1.2 - 2.2 microns), Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared (3.6 - 8.0 microns), Spitzer/MIPS far-infrared (24 - 70 microns), and VLA radio continuum (6 - 20 cm). In addition, this region of the sky has been targeted for extensive spectroscopy using the DEIMOS spectrograph on the Keck II 10 m telescope. Our survey is compared to other large multiwavelength surveys in terms of depth and sky coverage.

AEGIS: The Diversity of Bright Near-IR Selected Distant Red Galaxies

We use deep and wide near infrared (NIR) imaging from the Palomar telescope combined with DEEP2 spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and Chandra Space Telescope imaging to investigate the nature of galaxies that are red in NIR colors. We locate these `distant red galaxies' (DRGs) through the color cut (J-K)_{vega} > 2.3 over 0.7 deg^{2}, where we find 1010 DRG candidates down to K_s = 20.5. We combine 95 high quality spectroscopic redshifts with photometric redshifts from BRIJK photometry to determine the redshift and stellar mass distributions for these systems, and morphological/structural and X-ray properties for 107 DRGs in the Extended Groth Strip. We find that many bright (J-K)_{vega}>2.3 galaxies with K_s<20.5 are at redshifts z<2, with 64% between 1 2 systems massive with M_*>10^{11} M_solar. HST imaging shows that the structural properties and morphologies of DRGs are also diverse, with the majority elliptical/compact (57%), and the remainder edge-on spirals (7%), and peculiar galaxies (29%). The DRGs at z < 1.4 with high quality spectroscopic redshifts are generally compact, with small half light radii, and span a range in rest-frame optical properties. The spectral energy distributions for these objects differ from higher redshift DRGs: they are bluer by one magnitude in observed (I-J) color. A pure IR color selection of high redshift populations is not sufficient to identify unique populations, and other colors, or spectroscopic redshifts are needed to produce homogeneous samples.

The Morphological Diversities Among Star-forming Galaxies at High Redshifts in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS)

We have used the HST/ACS images to identify 4700 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) in GOODS. We present the results from a parametric analysis of the 2-D surface brightness profiles, for 1333 LBGs at z > 2.5 with rest-frame UV(1600 Angstrom) AB magnitude < -20.5. Based on the Sersic index, n, which measures the profile shape, we find that about 40% of LBGs at z=3 have light profiles close to exponential, and only 30% have the high concentrations seen for spheroids. About 30% of LBGs appear to have multiple cores or disturbed morphologies suggestive of close pairs or on-going mergers. The fraction of spheroid-like (n > 2.5) LBGs decreases by about 15% from z = 5 to 3. A comparison of LBGs with the starburst galaxies at z = 1.2, shows that the fraction of spheroid-like profiles is about 20% higher among LBGs. The ellipticity distribution for LBGs exhibits a pronounced skew towards high ellipticities (> 0.5), which cannot be explained by morphologies similar to the local disks and spheroids viewed at random orientations. The peak of the distribution evolves toward lower ellipticities, from 0.7 at z = 4 to 0.5 at z = 3. At z = 1.2 the distribution is relatively flat as seen among the present-day galaxies. The dominance of elongated morphologies among LBGs suggests that in a significant fraction of them we may be witnessing star-formation in clumps along gas-rich filaments, or the earliest gas-rich bars that encompass essentially the entire visible galaxy. Similar features are found to be ubiquitous in hydrodynamical simulations in which galaxy formation at high redshifts occurs in filamentary inflows of dynamically cold gas within the dark matter halos, and involves gas- rich mergers.

Merging Galaxies in Goods-s: First Extragalactic Results from Keck Laser Adaptive Optics

The Center for Adaptive Optics Treasury Survey (CATS) aims to combine deep HST images in the optical with deep Keck adaptive optics (AO) data in the near-infrared (NIR) to study distant galaxies, AGN, and supernovae. We recently achieved an important new milestone by securing the first Keck laser guide star AO image of faint galaxies. Six galaxies with redshifts ranging from 0.3-1.0 were targeted in one pointing in the GOODS-S field. Two are Chandra Deep Field South sources, XID-56 and XID-536, with complex morphologies suggestive of recent merger activity. Substructures seen in the NIR AO image (FWHM ~ 0.1"), including multiple tight knots in XID-56 and a double nucleus in XID-536, are confirmed in the optical HST images. These structures are unresolved in the best seeing-limited (FWHM ~ 0.5") NIR images. Stellar population synthesis models of the substructures indicate that XID-56 is a gas rich merger with a recent burst of star formation and significant amounts of dust. XID-536 appears to be a merger of two evolved stellar populations.

The nuclear cusp slopes of dwarf elliptical galaxies

We derive the light profiles for a sample of 25 dwarf elliptical galaxies observed by us with HST/WFPC2 in F555W and F814W. These profiles are fitted with Nuker, R^1/4, exponential, and Sersic laws, and are also used to derive the nuclear cusp slopes gamma. We discuss the correlation of nuclear cusp slope with galactic luminosity, presence of a nucleus, and type of light profile. The results are compared to those found in the literature for elliptical galaxies and the bulges of spiral galaxies. We find that as a class the nuclear regions of dwarf ellipticals are very similar to those of the exponential bulges of spiral galaxies, and have nuclear cusp slopes shallower than those of bulges that were well fitted by a de Vaucouleurs R^1/4 profile with the same luminosity. For the 14 nucleated galaxies in our sample this conclusion is less certain than for the 11 non-nucleated objects since it relies on an extrapolation of galaxy light under the nucleus. In terms of their light profiles and nuclear properties, most spheroidal stellar systems can be broadly divided into two subclasses: the exponential shallow cusp objects and the R^1/4, steep cusp objects. Membership of a class does not appear to correlate with the presence of a massive stellar disk.
