From subdiffusion to superdiffusion of particles on solid surfaces

We present a numerical and partially analytical study of classical particles obeying a Langevin equation that describes diffusion on a surface modeled by a two dimensional potential. The potential may be either periodic or random. Depending on the potential and the damping, we observe superdiffusion, large-step diffusion, diffusion, and subdiffusion. Superdiffusive behavior is associated with low damping and is in most cases transient, albeit often long. Subdiffusive behavior is associated with highly damped particles in random potentials. In some cases subdiffusive behavior persists over our entire simulation and may be characterized as metastable. In any case, we stress that this rich variety of behaviors emerges naturally from an ordinary Langevin equation for a system described by ordinary canonical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics.

Diffusion on a solid surface: Anomalous is normal

We present a numerical study of classical particles diffusing on a solid surface. The particles' motion is modeled by an underdamped Langevin equation with ordinary thermal noise. The particle-surface interaction is described by a periodic or a random two dimensional potential. The model leads to a rich variety of different transport regimes, some of which correspond to anomalous diffusion such as has recently been observed in experiments and Monte Carlo simulations. We show that this anomalous behavior is controlled by the friction coefficient, and stress that it emerges naturally in a system described by ordinary canonical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics.

Spatial Coherence Resonance near Pattern-Forming Instabilities

The analogue of temporal coherence resonance for spatial degrees of freedom is reported. Specifically, we show that spatiotemporal noise is able to optimally extract an intrinsic spatial scale in nonlinear media close to (but before) a pattern-forming instability. This effect is observed in a model of pattern-forming chemical reaction and in the Swift-Hohenberg model of fluid convection. In the latter case, the phenomenon is described analytically via an approximate approach.

Intrinsic noise-induced phase transitions: beyond the noise interpretation

We discuss intrinsic noise effects in stochastic multiplicative-noise partial differential equations, which are qualitatively independent of the noise interpretation (Ito vs. Stratonovich), in particular in the context of noise-induced ordering phase transitions. We study a model which, contrary to all cases known so far, exhibits such ordering transitions when the noise is interpreted not only according to Stratonovich, but also to Ito. The main feature of this model is the absence of a linear instability at the transition point. The dynamical properties of the resulting noise-induced growth processes are studied and compared in the two interpretations and with a reference Ginzburg-Landau type model. A detailed discussion of new numerical algorithms used in both interpretations is also presented.

Noise-Driven Mechanism for Pattern Formation

We extend the mechanism for noise-induced phase transitions proposed by Ibanes et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 020601-1 (2001)] to pattern formation phenomena. In contrast with known mechanisms for pure noise-induced pattern formation, this mechanism is not driven by a short-time instability amplified by collective effects. The phenomenon is analyzed by means of a modulated mean field approximation and numerical simulations.

First Passage Time Statistics For Systems Driven by Long Range Gaussian Noises

We examine the mean first passage time for a particle driven by highly correlated Gaussian fluctuations to reach one or more predetermined boundaries. We discuss a numerical algorithm to generate power-law correlated fluctuations and apply these to three physical examples. One is the arrival of a free particle at either end of an interval. The second is the decay of a particle from an unstable state. The third is the time for a particle to cross a barrier separating one well from another in a double well potential. In each case a comparison with the first passage time for a particle driven by Gaussian white noise is presented, as is an analysis of the dependence of the first passage time properties on the correlated noise parameters.

Fronts dynamics in the presence of spatio-temporal structured noises

Front dynamics modeled by a reaction-diffusion equation are studied under the influence of spatio-temporal structured noises. An effective deterministic model is analytical derived where the noise parameters, intensity, correlation time and correlation length appear explicitely. The different effects of these parameters are discussed for the Ginzburg-Landau and Schlögl models. We obtain an analytical expression for the front velocity as a function of the noise parameters. Numerical simulations results are in a good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Effect of External Noise Correlation in Optical Coherence Resonance

Coherence resonance occurring in semiconductor lasers with optical feedback is studied via the Lang-Kobayashi model with external non-white noise in the pumping current. The temporal correlation and the amplitude of the noise have a highly relevant influence in the system, leading to an optimal coherent response for suitable values of both the noise amplitude and correlation time. This phenomenon is quantitatively characterized by means of several statistical measures.

Propagation Dynamics of a Particle Phase in a Single-File Pore

We study propagation dynamics of a particle phase in a single-file pore connected to a reservoir of particles (bulk liquid phase). We show that the total mass $M(t)$ of particles entering the pore up to time $t$ grows as $M(t) = 2 m(J,ρ_F) \sqrt{D_0 t}$, where $D_0$ is the "bare" diffusion coefficient and the prefactor $m(J,ρ_F)$ is a non-trivial function of the reservoir density $ρ_F$ and the amplitude $J$ of attractive particle-particle interactions. Behavior of the dynamic density profiles is also discussed.

An entropy-driven noise-induced phase transition

We introduce a class of exactly solvable models which exhibit an ordering noise-induced phase transition driven by an entropic mechanism. In contrast with previous studies, order does not appear in this case as a result of an instability of the disordered phase produced by noise, but of a balance between the relaxing deterministic dynamics and the randomizing (entropic) character of the fluctuations. A finite-size scaling analysis of the phase transition reveals that it belongs to the universality class of the equilibrium Ising model. All these results are analyzed in the light of the nonequilibrium probability distribution of the system, which can be derived analytically. The relevance of our result as a possible scenario of the so-called Lower Critical Solution Temperature (LCST) transitions is analysed.

Dynamics and Scaling of Noise-Induced Domain Growth

The domain growth processes originating from noise-induced nonequilibrium phase transitions are analyzed, both for non-conserved and conserved dynamics. The existence of a dynamical scaling regime is established in the two cases, and the corresponding growth laws are determined. The resulting universal dynamical scaling scenarios are those of Allen-Cahn and Lifshitz-Slyozov, respectively. Additionally, the effect of noise sources on the behaviour of the pair correlation function at short distances is studied.

Harvesting Thermal Fluctuations: Activation Process Induced by a Nonlinear Chain in Thermal Equilibrium

We present a model in which the immediate environment of a bistable system is a molecular chain which in turn is connected to a thermal environment of the Langevin form. The molecular chain consists of masses connected by harmonic or by anharmonic springs. The distribution, intensity, and mobility of thermal fluctuations in these chains is strongly dependent on the nature of the springs and leads to different transition dynamics for the activated process. Thus, all else (temperature, damping, coupling parameters between the chain and the bistable system) being the same, the hard chain may provide an environment described as diffusion-limited and more effective in the activation process, while the soft chain may provide an environment described as energy-limited and less effective. The importance of a detailed understanding of the thermal environment toward the understanding of the activation process itself is thus highlighted.

Noise-Induced Phase Separation: Mean-Field Results

We present a study of a phase-separation process induced by the presence of spatially-correlated multiplicative noise. We develop a mean-field approach suitable for conserved-order-parameter systems and use it to obtain the phase diagram of the model. Mean-field results are compared with numerical simulations of the complete model in two dimensions. Additionally, a comparison between the noise-driven dynamics of conserved and nonconserved systems is made at the level of the mean-field approximation.

Coherence and synchronization in diode-laser arrays with delayed global coupling

The dynamics of a semiconductor-laser array whose individual elements are coupled in a global way through an external mirror is numerically analysed. A coherent in-phase solution is seen to be preferred by the system at intermediate values of the feedback coupling strength. At low values of this parameter, a strong amplification of the spontaneous emission noise is observed. A tendency towards chaos synchronization is also observed at large values of the feedback strength.

Nonclassical Kinetics in Constrained Geometries: Initial Distribution Effects

We present a detailed study of the effects of the initial distribution on the kinetic evolution of the irreversible reaction A+B -> 0 in one dimension. Our analytic as well as numerical work is based on a reaction-diffusion model of this reaction. We focus on the role of initial density fluctuations in the creation of the macroscopic patterns that lead to the well-known kinetic anomalies in this system. In particular, we discuss the role of the long wavelength components of the initial fluctuations in determining the long-time behavior of the system. We note that the frequently studied random initial distribution is but one of a variety of possible distributions leading to interesting anomalous behavior. Our discussion includes an initial distribution with correlated A-B pairs and one in which the initial distribution forms a fractal pattern. The former is an example of a distribution whose long wavelength components are suppressed, while the latter exemplifies one whose long wavelength components are enhanced, relative to those of the random distribution.

Nonequilibrium transitions induced by multiplicative noise

A new simple model exhibiting a noise-induced ordering transition (NIOT) and a noise-induced disordering transition (NIDT), in which the noise is purely multiplicative, is presented. Both transitions are found in two as well as in one dimension (where they had not been previously reported). We show analytically and numerically that the critical behavior of these two transitions is described by the so called multiplicative noise(MN) universality class. A computation of the set of critical exponents is presented in both $d=1$, and $d=2$ (where they have not been previously measured).

Front dynamics in turbulent media

A study of a stable front propagating in a turbulent medium is presented. The front is generated through a reaction-diffusion equation, and the turbulent medium is statistically modeled using a Langevin equation. Numerical simulations indicate the presence of two different dynamical regimes. These regimes appear when the turbulent flow either wrinkles a still rather sharp propagating interfase or broadens it. Specific dependences of the propagating velocities on stirring intensities appropriate to each case are found and fitted when possible according to theoretically predicted laws. Different turbulent spectra are considered.

Phase Separation Driven by External Fluctuations

The influence of external fluctuations in phase separation processes is analysed. These fluctuations arise from random variations of an external control parameter. A linear stability analysis of the homogeneous state shows that phase separation dynamics can be induced by external noise. The spatial structure of the noise is found to have a relevant role in this phenomenon. Numerical simulations confirm these results. A comparison with order-disorder noise induced phase transitions is also made.
