Reaction-diffusion fronts under stochastic advection

We study front propagation in stirred media using a simplified modelization of the turbulent flow. Computer simulations reveal the existence of the two limiting propagation modes observed in recent experiments with liquid phase isothermal reactions. These two modes respectively correspond to a wrinkled although sharp propagating interface and to a broadened one. Specific laws relative to the enhancement of the front velocity in each regime are confirmed by our simulations.

Langevin approach to generate synthetic turbulence

We present an analytical scheme, easily implemented numerically, to generate synthetic Gaussian turbulent flows by using a linear Langevin equation, where the noise term acts as a stochastic stirring force. The characteristic parameters of the velocity field are well introduced, in particular the kinematic viscosity and the spectrum of energy. As an application, the diffusion of a passive scalar is studied for two different energy spectra. Numerical results are compared favorably with analytical calculations.

External Fluctuations in a Pattern-Forming Instability

The effect of external fluctuations on the formation of spatial patterns is analysed by means of a stochastic Swift-Hohenberg model with multiplicative space-correlated noise. Numerical simulations in two dimensions show a shift of the bifurcation point controlled by the intensity of the multiplicative noise. This shift takes place in the ordering direction (i.e. produces patterns), but its magnitude decreases with that of the noise correlation length. Analytical arguments are presented to explain these facts.

Phase Separation Dynamics in a Concentration Gradient

Phase separation dynamics with an initially non-uniform concentration are studied. Critical and off-critical behavior is observed simultaneously. A mechanism for an expanding phase separated region is demonstrated and the time dependence of the concentration is determined. The final equilibrium state consists of a planar interface separating one phase from the other. The evolution to this state is characterized by an experimentally observable flux, $j$, crossing this interface. We find that $j \sim t^{-2/3}$ if patterns are formed in the bulk and $j \sim t^{-1/2}$ if the bulk remains homogeneous. The results are explained in terms of scaling arguments which are confirmed numerically. (postScript figures appended to end of lateX file).

Dynamic Renormalization Group Study of the $ϕ^4$ Model with Colored Noise

The non-conserved $ϕ^4$ model defined by a Langevin equation with external non-white noise is studied by means of the Dynamic Renormalization Group. The correlation time of the noise changes the critical point location but does not affect the critical exponents up to order $\varepsilon^2$. The same effect is obtained when the correlation length of the noise is considered. These results are shown to be in agreement with previous numerical simulations.
