Observation of spin Coulomb drag in a two-dimensional electron gas

An electron propagating through a solid carries spin angular momentum in addition to its mass and charge. Of late there has been considerable interest in developing electronic devices based on the transport of spin, which offer potential advantages in dissipation, size, and speed over charge-based devices. However, these advantages bring with them additional complexity. Because each electron carries a single, fixed value (-e) of charge, the electrical current carried by a gas of electrons is simply proportional to its total momentum. A fundamental consequence is that the charge current is not affected by interactions that conserve total momentum, notably collisions among the electrons themselves. In contrast, the electron's spin along a given spatial direction can take on two values, "up" and "down", so that the spin current and momentum need not be proportional. Although the transport of spin polarization is not protected by momentum conservation, it has been widely assumed that, like the charge current, spin current is unaffected by electron-electron (e-e) interactions. Here we demonstrate experimentally not only that this assumption is invalid, but that over a broad range of temperature and electron density, the flow of spin polarization in a two-dimensional gas of electrons is controlled by the rate of e-e collisions.

Abrupt transition in quasiparticle dynamics at optimal doping in a cuprate superconductor system

We report time-resolved measurements of the photoinduced change in reflectivity, Delta R, in the Bi2Sr2Ca(1-y)Dy(y)Cu2O(8+delta) (BSCCO) system of cuprate superconductors as a function of hole concentration. We find that the kinetics of quasiparticle decay and the sign of Delta R both change abruptly where the superconducting transition temperature Tc is maximal. These coincident changes suggest that a sharp transition in quasiparticle dynamics takes place precisely at optimal doping in the BSCCO system.

Diffusion of Nonequilibrium Quasiparticles in a Cuprate Superconductor

We report a transport study of nonequilibrium quasiparticles in a high-Tc cuprate superconductor using the transient grating technique. Low-intensity laser excitation (at photon energy 1.5 eV) was used to introduce a spatially periodic density of quasiparticles into a high-quality untwinned single crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.5. Probing the evolution of the initial density through space and time yielded the quasiparticle diffusion coefficient, and both inelastic and elastic scattering rates. The technique reported here is potentially applicable to precision measurement of quasiparticle dynamics, not only in cuprate superconductors, but in other electronic systems as well.

Single-quasiparticle stability and quasiparticle-pair decay in YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Ortho II)

We report results and analysis of time-resolved photoinduced reflectivity experiments on the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.5. The sample, which has Tc=45 K, was characterized by a high degree of purity and Ortho II ordering. The change in reflectivity (Delta R) was induced and probed using pulses of 100 femtosecond duration and photon energy 1.55 eV from a Ti:Sapphire laser. We provide a detailed picture of the decay rate (gamma) of Delta R as a function of temperature T and pump intensity I. At low T, gamma decreases linearly with decreasing I, extrapolating to nearly zero in the limit that I tends to zero. At higher temperatures gamma has the same linear dependence, but with nonzero limit as I goes to zero. In the interpretation of these results we assume that Delta R is proportional to the nonequilibrium quasiparticle density created by the laser. From an analysis of the gamma vs. I we estimate beta, the coefficient of proportionality relating the quasiparticle decay rate to the density. The intercept of gamma vs. I yields the thermal equilibrium quasiparticle decay rate. In a discussion section, we argue that the quasiparticles induced by the laser occupy primarily states near the antinodal regions of the Brillouin zone. We explain the divergence of the lifetime as T and I both tend to zero as a consequence of momentum and energy conservation in electron-electron scattering. We discuss the significance of the measured value of beta (approximately 0.1 cm2/s) in terms of the electron-phonon interactions.

Photoinduced Changes of Reflectivity in Single Crystals of YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Ortho II)

We report measurements of the photoinduced change in reflectivity of an untwinned single crystal of YBa2Cu3O6.5 in the ortho II structure. The decay rate of the transient change in reflectivity is found to decrease rapidly with decreasing temperature and, below Tc, with decreasing laser intensity. We interpret the decay as a process of thermalization of antinodal quasiparticles, whose rate is determined by an inelastic scattering rate of quasiparticle pairs.

Far-infrared optical conductivity gap in superconducting MgB2 films

We report the first study of the optical conductivity of MgB2 covering the range of its superconducting energy gap. Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy is utilized to determine the complex, frequency-dependent conductivity of thin films. The imaginary part reveals an inductive reponse due to the emergence of the superconducting condensate. The real part exhibits a strong depletion of oscillator strength near 5 meV resulting from the opening of a superconducting energy gap. The gap ratio of 2Delta/kTc = 1.9 is well below the weak-coupling value, pointing to complex behavior in this novel superconductor

Measurement of Transport Lifetime in a Cuprate Superconductor

We report measurements of the phase of the conductivity, $ϕ_σ\equiv arg(σ)$, in the normal state of a $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ (BSCCO) thin film from 0.2-1.0 THz. From $ϕ_σ$ we obtain the time delay of the current response, $τ_σ\equivϕ_σ/ω$. After discovering a systematic error in the data analysis, the extracted $τ_σ$ has changed from that reported earlier. The revised data is shown in the sole figure below. Analysis and discussion of these data will follow.

Fractional power-law conductivity in SrRuO_3 and its consequences

We combine the results of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy with far-infrared transmission and reflectivity to obtain the conductivity of SrRuO_3 over an unprecedented continuous range in frequency, allowing us to characterize the approach to zero frequency as a function of temperature. We show that the conductivity follows a simple phenomenological form, with an analytic structure fundamentally different from that predicted by the standard theory of metals.

Nodal Quasiparticle Lifetime in the Superconducting State of BSCCO(2212)

We have measured the complex conductivity of a BSCCO(2212) thin film between 0.2 and 1.0 THz. We find the conductivity in the superconducting state to be well described as the sum of contributions from quasiparticles, the condensate, and order parameter fluctuations which draw 30% of the spectral weight from the condensate. An analysis based on this decomposition yields a quasiparticle scattering rate on the order of k_(B)*T/(hbar) for temperatures below Tc.

Low Temperature AC Conductivity in BSCCO (2212)

We report measurements of anamolously large dissipative conductivities in BiSrCaCuO(2212) at low temperatures. We have measured the complex conductivity of BSCCO thin films at 100-600 GHz as a function of doping from the underdoped to the overdoped state. At low temperatures there exists a residual dissipative conductivity which scales with the T=0 superfluid density as the doping is varied. This residual dissipative conductivity is larger than the possible contribution from a thermal population of quasiparticles at the d-wave gap nodes.

Vanishing of phase coherence in underdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d

Coherent time-domain spectroscopy is used to measure the screening and dissipation of high-frequency electromagnetic fields in a set of underdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d thin films. The measurements provide direct evidence for a phase-fluctuation driven transition from the superconductor to normal state, with dynamics described well by the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory of vortex-pair unbinding.
