The deformation theory of representations of the fundamental group of a smooth variety

Consider the functor describing deformations of a representation of the fundamental group of a variety X. This paper is chiefly concerned with establishing an analogue in finite characteristic of a result proved by Goldman and Millson for compact Kahler manifolds. By applying the Weil Conjectures instead of Hodge theory, we see that if X is a smooth proper variety defined over a finite field, and we consider deformations of certain continuous l-adic representations of the algebraic fundamental group, then the hull of the deformation functor will be defined by quadratic equations. Moreover, if X is merely smooth, then the hull will be defined by equations of degree at most four.

Non-abelian reciprocity laws and higher Brauer-Manin obstructions

We reinterpret Kim's non-abelian reciprocity maps for algebraic varieties as obstruction towers of mapping spaces of etale homotopy types, removing technical hypotheses such as global basepoints and cohomological constraints. We then extend the theory by considering alternative natural series of extensions, one of which gives an obstruction tower whose first stage is the Brauer--Manin obstruction, allowing us to determine when Kim's maps recover the Brauer-Manin locus. A tower based on relative completions yields non-trivial reciprocity maps even for Shimura varieties; for the stacky modular curve, these take values in Galois cohomology of modular forms, and give obstructions to an adelic elliptic curve with global Tate module underlying a global elliptic curve.

On $q$-de Rham cohomology via $Λ$-rings

We show that Aomoto's $q$-deformation of de Rham cohomology arises as a natural cohomology theory for $Λ$-rings. Moreover, Scholze's $(q-1)$-adic completion of $q$-de Rham cohomology depends only on the Adams operations at each residue characteristic. This gives a fully functorial cohomology theory, including a lift of the Cartier isomorphism, for smooth formal schemes in mixed characteristic equipped with a suitable lift of Frobenius. If we attach $p$-power roots of $q$, the resulting theory is independent even of these lifts of Frobenius, refining a comparison by Bhatt, Morrow and Scholze.

Deformation quantisation for (-1)-shifted symplectic structures and vanishing cycles

We formulate a notion of $E_0$ quantisation of $(-1)$-Poisson structures on derived Artin $N$-stacks, and construct a map from $E_0$ quantisations of $(-1)$-shifted symplectic structures to power series in de Rham cohomology. For a square root of the dualising line bundle, this gives an equivalence between even power series and self-dual quantisations. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation of any such square root, which localises to recover the perverse sheaf of vanishing cycles on derived DM stacks, thus giving a form of derived categorification of Donaldson--Thomas invariants.

Tannaka duality for enhanced triangulated categories II: $t$-structures and homotopy types

We consider the effect of $t$-structures on the Tannaka duality theory for dg categories developed in our previous paper. We associate non-negative dg coalgebras $C$ to dg functors on the hearts of $t$-structures, and relate dg $C$-comodules to the original dg category. We give several applications for pro-algebraic homotopy types associated to various cohomology theories, and for motivic Galois groups.

Tannaka duality for enhanced triangulated categories I: reconstruction

We develop Tannaka duality theory for dg categories. To any dg functor from a dg category $\mathcal{A}$ to finite-dimensional complexes, we associate a dg coalgebra $C$ via a Hochschild homology construction. When the dg functor is faithful, this gives a quasi-equivalence between the derived dg categories of $\mathcal{A}$-modules and of $C$-comodules. When $\mathcal{A}$ is Morita fibrant (i.e. an idempotent-complete pre-triangulated category), it is thus quasi-equivalent to the derived dg category of compact $C$-comodules. We give several applications for motivic Galois groups.

A differential graded model for derived analytic geometry

We give a formulation for derived analytic geometry built from commutative differential graded algebras equipped with entire functional calculus on their degree 0 part, a theory well-suited to developing shifted Poisson structures and quantisations. In the complex setting, we show that this formulation recovers equivalent derived analytic spaces and stacks to those coming from Lurie's structured topoi. In non-Archimedean settings, there is a similar comparison, but for derived dagger analytic spaces and stacks, based on overconvergent functions.

Deformation quantisation for unshifted symplectic structures on derived Artin stacks

We prove that every $0$-shifted symplectic structure on a derived Artin $n$-stack admits a curved $A_{\infty}$ deformation quantisation. The classical method of quantising smooth varieties via quantisations of affine space does not apply in this setting, so we develop a new approach. We construct a map from DQ algebroid quantisations of unshifted symplectic structures on a derived Artin $n$-stack to power series in de Rham cohomology, depending only on a choice of Drinfeld associator. This gives an equivalence between even power series and certain involutive quantisations, which yield anti-involutive curved $A_{\infty}$ deformations of the dg category of perfect complexes. In particular, there is a canonical quantisation associated to every symplectic structure on such a stack, which agrees for smooth varieties with the Kontsevich--Tamarkin quantisation for even associators.

A K-theoretic interpretation of real Deligne cohomology

We show that real Deligne cohomology of a complex manifold arises locally as a topological vector space completion of the analytic Lie groupoid of holomorphic vector bundles. Thus Beilinson's regulator arises naturally as a comparison map between $K$-theory groups of different types.

Analytic non-abelian Hodge theory

The pro-algebraic fundamental group can be understood as a completion with respect to finite-dimensional non-commutative algebras. We introduce finer invariants by looking at completions with respect to Banach and C*-algebras, from which we can recover analytic and topological representation spaces, respectively. For a compact Kaehler manifold, the C*-completion also gives the natural setting for non-abelian Hodge theory; it has a pure Hodge structure, in the form of a pro-C*-dynamical system. Its representations are pluriharmonic local systems in Hilbert spaces, and we study their cohomology, giving a principle of two types, and splittings of the Hodge and twistor structures.

Smooth functions on algebraic K-theory

For any complex scheme X or any dg category, there is an associated K-theory presheaf on the category of complex affine schemes. We study real smooth functions on this presheaf, defined by Kan extension, and show that they are closely related to real Deligne cohomology. When X is quasi-compact and semi-separated, and for various non-commutative derived schemes, these smooth functions on K-theory are dual to the homotopy fibre of the Chern character from Blanc's semi-topological K-theory to cyclic homology.

Presenting higher stacks as simplicial schemes

We show that an n-geometric stack may be regarded as a special kind of simplicial scheme, namely a Duskin n-hypergroupoid in affine schemes, where surjectivity is defined in terms of covering maps, yielding Artin n-stacks, Deligne-Mumford n-stacks and n-schemes as the notion of covering varies. This formulation adapts to all HAG contexts, so in particular works for derived n-stacks (replacing rings with simplicial rings). We exploit this to describe quasi-coherent sheaves and complexes on these stacks, and to draw comparisons with Kontsevich's dg-schemes. As an application, we show how the cotangent complex controls infinitesimal deformations of higher and derived stacks.

Formality and splitting of real non-abelian mixed Hodge structures

We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. Thus the mixed Hodge structures can be recovered from cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, these all become real variations of mixed Hodge structure.

Real non-abelian mixed Hodge structures for quasi-projective varieties: formality and splitting

We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex quasi-projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. The mixed Hodge structures can thus be recovered from the Gysin spectral sequence of cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, these structures all become real variations of mixed Hodge structure.

Derived log stacks after Olsson

In this note, we give a formulation of log structures for derived stacks using Olsson's log stack. The derived cotangent complex is then Olsson's logarithmic cotangent complex, which (unlike Gabber's) is just given by log differential forms in the log smooth case. The derived moduli stack of log stable maps then produces the desired virtual tangent space and obstruction theory on the underlying underived stack.

Representability of derived stacks

Lurie's representability theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for a functor to be an almost finitely presented derived geometric stack. We establish several variants of Lurie's theorem, making the hypotheses easier to verify for many applications. Provided a derived analogue of Schlessinger's condition holds, the theorem reduces to verifying conditions on the underived part and on cohomology groups. Another simplification is that functors need only be defined on nilpotent extensions of discrete rings. Finally, there is a pre-representability theorem, which can be applied to associate explicit geometric stacks to dg-manifolds and related objects.

Constructing derived moduli stacks

We introduce frameworks for constructing global derived moduli stacks associated to a broad range of problems, bridging the gap between the concrete and abstract conceptions of derived moduli. Our three approaches are via differential graded Lie algebras, via cosimplicial groups, and via quasi-comonoids, each more general than the last. Explicit examples of derived moduli problems addressed here are finite schemes, polarised projective schemes, torsors, coherent sheaves, and finite group schemes.

Derived deformations of Artin stacks

We generalise the techniques of arXiv:0908.1963 to describe derived deformations in simplicial categories. This allows us to consider deformation problems with higher automorphisms, such as chain complexes (which have homotopies) and stacks (which have 2-automorphisms). We also give a general approach for studying deformations of diagrams.
