Semiregularity via derived deformation theory

We realise Buchweitz and Flenner's semiregularity map (and hence a fortiori Bloch's semiregularity map) as the tangent of a morphism of derived moduli functors. An immediate consequence is that it annihilates all obstructions (not just curvilinear ones) globally. This proves Bloch's semiregularity conjecture and establishes a global reduced obstruction theory.

Galois actions on homotopy groups

We study the Galois actions on the l-adic schematic and Artin-Mazur homotopy groups of algebraic varieties. For proper varieties of good reduction over a local field K, we show that the l-adic schematic homotopy groups are mixed representations explicitly determined by the Galois action on cohomology of Weil sheaves, whenever l is not equal to the residue characteristic p of K. For quasi-projective varieties of good reduction, there is a similar characterisation involving the Gysin spectral sequence. When l=p, a slightly weaker result is proved by comparing the crystalline and p-adic schematic homotopy types. Under favourable conditions, a comparison theorem transfers all these descriptions to the Artin-Mazur homotopy groups.

Non-abelian real Hodge theory for proper varieties

We show that if X is any proper complex variety, there is a weight decomposition on the real schematic homotopy type, in the form of an algebraic G_m-action. This extends to a real Hodge structure, in the form of a discrete C^*-action, such that C^* x X -> X^{sch} is real analytic. If the fundamental group is algebraically good, and the higher homotopy groups have finite rank, this gives bigraded decompositions on the complexified homotopy groups. For smooth proper varieties, the Hodge structure can be recovered from the cohomology ring with coefficients in the universal semisimple local system.

The homotopy theory of strong homotopy algebras and bialgebras

Lada introduced strong homotopy algebras to describe the structures on a deformation retract of an algebra in topological spaces. However, there is no satisfactory general definition of a morphism of strong homotopy (s.h.) algebras. Given a monad T on a simplicial category C, we instead show how s.h. T-algebras over C naturally form a Segal space. Given a distributive monad-comonad pair (T, S), the same is true for s.h. (T, S)-bialgebras over C; in particular this yields the homotopy theory of s.h. sheaves of s.h. rings. There are similar statements for quasi-monads and quasi-comonads. We also show how the structures arising are related to derived connections on bundles.

Derived deformations of schemes

We introduce a new approach to constructing derived deformation groupoids, by considering them as parameter spaces for strong homotopy bialgebras. This allows them to be constructed for all classical deformation problems, such as deformations of an arbitrary scheme, in any characteristic.

Hodge structures on analytic moduli of real pluriharmonic bundles

We define and construct the real analytic moduli stack of pluriharmonic bundles on a compact Kaehler manifold X, and show how this is equipped with Hodge and quaternionic structures. This stack maps to the de Rham moduli stack, giving rise to preferred sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor stack. We then show how the non-abelian mixed Hodge structures on Malcev homotopy types X can be extended to objects over the pluriharmonic moduli stack.

Pro-algebraic homotopy types

The purpose of this paper is to generalise Sullivan's rational homotopy theory to non-nilpotent spaces, providing an alternative approach to defining Toen's schematic homotopy types over any field k of characteristic zero. New features include an explicit description of homotopy groups using the Maurer-Cartan equations, convergent spectral sequences comparing schematic homotopy groups with cohomology of the universal semisimple local system, and a generalisation of the Baues-Lemaire conjecture. For compact Kaehler manifolds, the schematic homotopy groups can be described explicitly in terms of this cohomology ring, giving canonical weight decompositions. There are also notions of minimal models, unpointed homotopy types and algebraic automorphism groups. For a space with algebraically good fundamental group and higher homotopy groups of finite rank, the schematic homotopy groups are shown to be π_n(X)\otimes k.

Galois actions on the pro-l-unipotent fundamental group

This paper establishes restrictions on the possible Galois actions on the pro-l-unipotent fundamental group of a smooth variety X of good reduction over a local field K. In particular, if X is proper and l is not equal to the residue characteristic p of K, then this action is uniquely determined by the action on cohomology. A similar result for l=p is then proved via a comparison theorem between the crystalline and pro-p homotopy types.

Weight decompositions on etale fundamental groups

Let X be a smooth or proper variety defined over a finite field. The geometric etale fundamental group of X is a normal subgroup of the Weil group, so conjugation gives it a Weil action. We consider the pro-Q_l-algebraic completion of the fundamental group as a non-abelian Weil representation. Lafforgue's Theorem and Deligne's Weil II theorems imply that this affine group scheme is mixed, in the sense that its structure sheaf is a mixed Weil representation. When X is smooth, weight restrictions apply, affecting the possibilities for the structure of this group. This gives new examples of groups which cannot arise as etale fundamental groups of smooth varieties.

Deformations via Simplicial Deformation Complexes

There has long been a philosophy that every deformation problem in characteristic zero should be governed by a differential graded Lie algebra (DGLA). In this paper, the theory of Simplicial Deformation Complexes (SDCs) is developed, as an alternative to DGLAs. These work in all characteristics, and for many problems can be constructed canonically. In particular, SDCs are constructed for the problems of deforming an arbitrary scheme, of deforming a Hopf algebra, and of deforming a representation of the fundamental group. In characteristic zero, SDCs and DGLAs are equivalent.

The pro-unipotent radical of the pro-algebraic fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold

The aim of this paper is to study the pro-algebraic fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold. Following work by Simpson, the structure of this group's pro-reductive quotient is already well understood. We show that Hodge-theoretic methods can also be used to establish that the pro-unipotent radical is quadratically presented. This generalises both Deligne et al.'s result on the de Rham fundamental group, and Goldman and Millson's result on deforming representations of Kaehler groups, and can be regarded as a consequence of formality of the schematic homotopy type. New examples are given of groups which cannot arise as Kaehler groups.

The structure of the pro-l-unipotent fundamental group of a smooth variety

By developing a theory of deformations over nilpotent Lie algebras, based on Schlessinger's deformation theory over Artinian rings, this paper investigates the pro-l-unipotent fundamental group of a variety X. If X is smooth and proper, defined over a finite field, then the Weil conjectures imply that this group is quadratically presented. If X is smooth and non-proper, then the group is defined by equations of bracket length at most four.
