Chiral condensate thermal evolution at finite baryon chemical potential within ChPT

We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a model independent systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can serve as a guideline for further studies on the lattice. We also obtain estimates of the critical line of temperature and chemical potential where the chiral condensate melts, which systematically lie somewhat higher than recent lattice calculations but are consistent with several hadronic models.

Nature of the f_0(600) from its N_c dependence at two loops in unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

By using unitarized two-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory partial waves to describe pion-pion scattering we find that the dominant component of the lightest scalar meson does not follow the q-qbar dependence on the number of colors that, in contrast, is obeyed by the lightest vectors. The method suggests that a subdominant q-qbar component of the f_0(600) possibly originates around 1 GeV.

Chiral condensate thermal evolution at finite baryon chemical potential within Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop, and nucleon-nucleon interactions can be safely neglected within our hadronic gas domain of validity. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can serve as a guideline for further studies on the lattice. We also obtain estimates of the critical line of temperature and chemical potential where the chiral condensate melts, which systematically lie somewhat higher than recent lattice calculations but are consistent with several hadronic models. We have also estimated uncertainties due to chiral parameters, heavier hadrons and higher orders through unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Forward dispersion relations and Roy equations in pi-pi scattering

We review results of an analysis of pipi interactions in S, P and D waves for two-pion effective mass from threshold to about 1.4 GeV. In particular we show a recent improvement of this analysis above the K anti-K threshold using more data for phase shifts and including the S0 wave inelasticity from pipi -> K anti-K. In addition, we have improved the fit to the f2(1270) resonance and used a more flexible P wave parametrization above the K anti-K threshold and included an estimation of the D2 wave inelasticity. The better accuracy thus achieved also required a refinement of the Regge analysis above 1.42 GeV. We have checked that the pipi scattering amplitudes obtained in this approach satisfy remarkably well forward dispersion relations and Roy's equations.

The pion-pion scattering amplitude. II: Improved analysis above $\bar{K}K$ threshold

We improve, in the energy region between $\bar{K}K$ threshold and $\sim~1.4$ GeV, the energy-dependent phase shift analysis of $ππ$ scattering presented in a previous paper. For the S0 wave we have included more data above $\bar{K}K$ threshold and we have taken into account systematically the elasticity data on the reaction $ππ\to\bar{K}K$. We here made a coupled channel fit. For the D0 wave we have considered information on low energy parameters, and imposed a better fit to the $f_2$ resonance. For both waves the expressions we now find are substantially more precise than the previous ones. We also provide slightly improved D2 and P waves, including the estimated inelasticity for the first, and a more flexible parametrization between 1 and 1.42 GeV for the second. The accuracy of our amplitudes is now such that it requires a refinement of the Regge analysis, for $s^{1/2}\geq1.42$ GeV, which we also carry out. We show that this more realistic input produces $ππ$ scattering amplitudes that satisfy better forward dispersion relations, particularly for $π^0π^0$ scattering.

Extending the Regge description of hadronic forward scattering from the multi-TeV down to the GeV region

We provide a simple Regge parametrization of forward hadronic scattering from the multi-TeV range down to approximately 1 GeV above the threshold of each reaction. We show how, at these relatively low energies, mass effects are relevant and should be properly taken into account, and that the data favor a logarithmic growth of the Pomeron contribution that is based on an improved unitarity bound at intermediate energies as well as a separate factorization of the singularities. Data on both the imaginary and real parts of amplitudes are remarkably well described with this parametrization. Here we also show that the description does not depend on the strategy adopted to include or not systematic uncertainties in different data sets.

Discussion of the eta to pi^0 gamma gamma decay within a chiral unitary approach

We improve the calculations of the $η\to π^0 γγ$ decay within the context of meson chiral lagrangians. We use a chiral unitary approach for the meson-meson interaction, thus generating the $a_0(980)$ resonance and fixing the longstanding sign ambiguity on its contribution. This also allows us to calculate the loops with one vector meson exchange, thus removing a former source of uncertainty. In addition we ensure the consistency of the approach with other processes. First, by using vector meson dominance couplings normalized to agree with radiative vector meson decays. And, second, by checking the consistency of the calculations with the related $γγ\to π^0 η$ reaction. We find an $η\to π^0 γγ$ decay width of $0.47\pm 0.10$ eV, in clear disagreement with published data but in remarkable agreement with the most recent measurement.

Chiral-dispersive calculations of pion-pion scattering confront experiment

In a series of papers we have applied several sum rules and forward dispersion relations, to pion-pion scattering. We have found that some widely used data sets fail to satisfy these constraints, and we have provided an amplitude that describes data consistently with the dispersive tests. Furthermore, we noted that the input and precision claimed in a Roy equation analysis by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler, lead to several mismatches with some sum rules. Subsequently, Caprini, Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler claimed that our Regge parametrization was incorrect. We collect here the answers to their various claims, and try to clarify the points of agreement and disagreement, showing experimental evidence that substantiates our results, and that, in addition, their representation fails to satisfy all three forward dispersion relations up to sqrt{s}<=800 MeV by several standard deviations.

Consistency checks of different pion-pion scattering data sets using forward dispersion relations

We review our evaluation of forward dispersion relations for direct fits to the different, and often conflicting, pion-pion scattering experimental analyses. We find that some of the most commonly used data sets do not satisfy these constraints by several standard deviations. We also provide a consistent pion-pion amplitude by improving a global fit to data with these dispersion relations.

Light scalar and vector mesons in the large $N_c$ limit from unitarized chiral perturbation theory

We review the large Nc behavior of light scalar and vector resonances generated from unitarized meson-meson scattering amplitudes at one loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The vectors nicely follow the behavior expected for qqbar states, whereas scalar mesons do not. This suggests that the main component of light scalars is not qqbar. We also comment on t-channel vector exchange as well as on the large Nc behavior of the mass splittings between the vectors generated from the inverse amplitude method.

Forward Hadronic Scattering from Few Gev to Multi Tev within Regge Theory

The Regge description of forward hadronic scattering is extended from $\sim1\gev$ above each threshold up to the multi TeV range. This is achieved with a simple parametrization, that includes mass effects, a logarithmic growth based on an improved unitarity bound at intermediate energies and a separate factorization of singularities. This parametrization can be easily implemented for phenomenological use, but also sheds light on subdominant trajectories and the Pomeron logarithmic growth law.

Strong unitary violations in the extra dimensional SM and the equivalence between Goldstone and longitudinal gauge bosons

Tree level unitarity violations of extra dimensional extensions of the Standard Model may become much stronger when the scalar sector is included in the bulk. This effect occurs when the couplings are not suppressed for larger Kaluza-Klein levels, and could have relevant consequences for the phenomenology of the next generation of colliders. We briefly review our formalism to obtain more stringent unitarity bounds when KK modes are present, as well as the generalization to extra dimensions of the Equivalence Theorem between Goldstone bosons and longitudinal gauge bosons

Comments on the large Nc behavior of light scalars

I review the large Nc behavior of light resonances generated from unitarized one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. In contrast with the rho or K*, the scalar behavior is at odds with a qqbar "dominant component". In fact, in the light scalar region, meson-meson amplitudes vanish as Nc increases. Also, the scalar widths, obtained from their associated poles, behave as O(Nc^{1/2})<Gamma<O(Nc). We also clarify on the physical relevance of considering large Nc not too far from real life, Nc=3, and the interpretation of the mathematical Nc=infinity limit.

Two-meson cloud contribution to the baryon antidecuplet binding

We study the two-meson virtual cloud contribution to the self-energy of the SU(3) antidecuplet, to which the Theta+ pentaquark is assumed to belong. This is motivated by the large branching ratio of the N(1710) decay into two pions and one nucleon. We derive effective Lagrangians that describe the N(1710) decay into N-pi-pi with two pions in s or p wave. We obtain increased binding for all members of the antidecuplet and a contribution to the mass splitting between states with different strangeness which is at least 20 % of the empirical one. We also provide predictions for three-body decays of the pentaquark antidecuplet.

The pion-pion scattering amplitude

We obtain reliable $ππ$ scattering amplitudes consistent with experimental data, both at low and high energies, and fulfilling appropriate analyticity properties. We do this by first fitting experimental low energy ($s^{1/2}\leq1.42 {\rm GeV}$) phase shifts and inelasticities with expressions that incorporate analyticity and unitarity. In particular, for the S wave with isospin~0, we discuss in detail several sets of experimental data. This provides low energy partial wave amplitudes that summarize the known experimental information. Then, we impose Regge behaviour as follows from factorization and experimental data for the imaginary parts of the scattering amplitudes at higher energy, and check fulfillment of dispersion relations up to 0.925 GeV. This allows us to improve our fits. The ensuing $ππ$ scattering amplitudes are then shown to verify dispersion relations up to 1.42 GeV, as well as $s - t - u$ crossing sum rules and other consistency conditions. The improved parametrizations therefore provide a reliable representation of pion-pion amplitudes with which one can test chiral perturbation theory calculations, pionium decays, or use as input for CP-violating $K$ decays. In this respect, we find $[a_0^{(0)}-a_0^{(2)}]^2=(0.077\pm0.008) M^{-1}_π$ and $δ_0^{(0)}(m^2_K)-δ_0^{(2)}(m^2_K)=52.9\pm1.6^{\rm o}$.

Two-meson cloud contribution to the baryon antidecuplet self-energy

We study the self-energy of the SU(3) antidecuplet coming from two-meson virtual clouds. Assuming that the exotic Theta+ belongs to an antidecuplet representation with N(1710) as nucleon partner, we derive effective Lagrangians that describe the decay of N(1710) into N pi pi with two pions in s- or p-wave. It is found that the self-energies for all members of the antidecuplet are attractive, and the larger strangeness particle is more bound. From two-meson cloud, we obtain about 20 % of the empirical mass splitting between states with different strangeness.

Consistency checks of pion-pion scattering data and chiral dispersive calculations

We have evaluated forward dispersion relations for scattering amplitudes that follow from direct fits to several sets of pion-pion scattering experiments, together with the precise K decay results, and high to energy data. We find that some of the most commonly used experimental sets, as well as some recent theoretical analyses based on Roy equations, do not satisfy these constraints by several standard deviations. Finally, we provide a consistent pion-pion amplitude by improving a global fit to data with these dispersion relations.

Finite temperature pion vector form factors in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We discuss the thermal behaviour of the pion vector form factors and calculate them in one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory. The perturbative result is used to analyze the $T$-dependent electromagnetic pion charge radius, obtaining a rough estimate of the deconfinement critical temperature. Imposing thermal unitarity, we generate the $ρ$ resonance pole for the form factor in the center of mass frame. The $ρ$ peak height in the modulus of the form factor decreases for increasing temperature, while its width increases and the peak position is slightly shifted downwards for $T\simeq$ 150 MeV. These results point in the direction suggested by many analysis of dilepton production data in relativistic heavy ion collisions.
