Light scalars as tetraquarks or two-meson states from large Nc and unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

By means of unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory it is possible to obtain a remarkable description of meson-meson scattering amplitudes up to 1.2 GeV, and generate poles associated to scalar and vector resonances. Since Chiral Perturbation Theory is the QCD low energy effective theory, it is possible then to study its large Nc limit where qqbar states are easily identified. The vectors thus generated follow closely a qqbar behavior, whereas the light scalar poles follow the large Nc behavior expected for a dominant tetraquark or two-meson structure.

Chiral Mesons in Hot Matter

We review our recent work on thermal meson properties within the Chiral Perturbation Theory framework. We will focus on the pion electromagnetic form factor, stressing its importance for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions. We obtain model-independent predictions (based only on chiral symmetry) such as the temperature dependence of the pion electromagnetic charge radius. Imposing unitarity allows to describe the thermal effects of resonances such as the $ρ$ meson.

Regge description of high energy pion pion total cross sections

We have recently presented a Regge description of pion-pion total cross sections valid above 1.4 GeV, consistent with the few existing experiments, factorization and crossing symmetry. In this note we show how it also describes a further large data sample obtained from an analysis of experiments on $π^\pm p\to XΔ^{++}$ and $π^\pm n\to Xp$.

Regge Description of pion-pion, pion-Kaon, pion-N, Kaon-N and NN Forward Scattering Above E_{kin}>1 Gev

We review our recent description of high energy forward hadronic cross sections and in particular of pion scattering data by means of Regge theory. We obtain a prediction for the total proton-proton cross section at LHC. In addition, and contrary to some suggestions in the literature we show that standard Regge behavior can accommodate both crossing symmetry and factorization. Some consequences for low energy pion-pion scattering are briefly discussed.

On the nature of light scalar mesons from their large $N_c$ behavior

We show how to obtain information about the states of an effective field theory in terms of the underlying fundamental theory. In particular we analyze the spectroscopic nature of meson resonances from the meson-meson scattering amplitudes of the QCD low energy effective theory, combined with the expansion in the large number of colors. The vectors follow a qqbar behavior, whereas the sigma, kappa and f_0(980) scalars disappear for large N_c, in support of a qqqbarqbar-like nature. The a_0 shows a similar pattern, but the uncertainties are large enough to accommodate both interpretations.

Equivalence between Kaluza Klein modes of gravitinos and goldstinos in brane induced supersymmetry breaking

We identify the goldstino fields that give mass to the Kaluza Klein modes of five dimensional supergravity, when supersymmetry breaking is induced by brane effects. We then proof the four dimensional Equivalence Theorem that, in renormalizable gauges, allows for the replacement of Kaluza Klein modes of helicity $\pm1/2$ gravitinos in terms of goldstinos. Finally we identify the five dimensional renormalizable gauge fixing that leads to the Equivalence Theorem.

Regge analysis of pion-pion (and pion-kaon) scattering for energy s^{1/2}>1.4 GeV

We perform a detailed Regge analysis of NN, pion-N and pion-pion scattering. From it, we find expressions that represent the pion-pion scattering amplitudes with an accuracy of a few percent, for exchange of isospin zero, and $\sim15%$ for exchange of isospin 1, and this for energies s^{1/2}> 1.4 GeV and for momentum transfers |t|^{1/2}< 0.4 GeV. These Regge formulas are perfectly compatible with the low energy (s^{1/2}< 1.4 GeV) scattering amplitudes deduced from pion-pion phase shift analyses as well as with higher energy (s^{1/2}>1.4 GeV) experimental pion-pion cross sections. They are also compatible with NN and pion-N experimental cross sections using factorization, a property that we check with great precision. This contrasts with results from phase shift analyses of the pion-pion scattering amplitude which bear little resemblance to reality in the region $1.4 1.7 GeV. As a byproduct of our analysis we present also a fit of $NN$, $πN$ and $KN$ cross sections valid from c.m. kinetic energy $E_{\rm kin}\simeq1$ GeV to multi TeV energies.

Large N_c behavior of light resonances in meson-meson scattering

By scaling the parameters of meson-meson unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory amplitudes according to the QCD large N_c rules, one can study the spectroscopic nature of light meson resonances. The scalars sigma, kappa f_0(980) and, possibly, the a_0(980) do not seem to behave as q-qbar states, in contrast to the vectors rho(770) and K*(892). The behavior shown by the scalars is naturally explained in terms of diagrams with intermediate $\bar q\bar q qq$-like states. Here we review our recent study and show how the results do not depend on the different fits to data.

On the precision of chiral-dispersive calculations of $ππ$ scattering

We calculate the combination $2a_0^{(0)}-5a_0^{(2)}$ (the Olsson sum rule) and the scattering lengths and effective ranges $a_1$, $a_2^{(I)}$ and $b_1$, $b_2^{(I)}$ dispersively (with the Froissart--Gribov representation) using, at low energy, the phase shifts for $ππ$ scattering obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL) from the Roy equations and chiral perturbation theory, plus experiment and Regge behaviour at high energy, or directly, using the CGL parameters for $a$s and $b$s. We find mismatch, both among the CGL phases themselves and with the results obtained from the pion form factor. This reaches the level of several (2 to 5) standard deviations, and is essentially independent of the details of the intermediate energy region ($0.82\leq E\leq 1.42$ GeV) and, in some cases, of the high energy behaviour assumed. We discuss possible reasons for this mismatch, in particular in connection with an alternate set of phase shifts.

Recent progress on the light meson resonance description from unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory and large Nc

We present a brief account of the developments in the description of light meson resonances using unitarized extensions of the Chiral Perturbation Theory series, both in energy and temperature. In particular, we describe how these methods have been recently shown to describe simultaneously the low energy and resonance regions of meson-meson scattering. This approach could be of relevance to understand the light scalar mesons since it provides a formalism that respects chiral symmetry and unitarity and is able to generate resonant states without any a priori theoretical bias toward their existence, classification or spectroscopic nature. We will also review how this approach is also able to describe the thermal evolution of the $ρ$ and $σ$ mesons. In addition we review their extensions to higher orders, the most recent determination of the resonance pole properties, as well as their behavior in the large $N_c$ limit, which could be of relevance to understand their spectroscopic nature.

Poles of light resonances from unitarized Chiral perturbation Theory and their large Nc behavior

We have recently completed the one loop calculation of meson-meson scattering within Chiral Perturbation Theory. Once unitarized, these amplitudes provide simultaneously a remarkable description of the resonance region up to 1.2 GeV as well as the low energy region, respecting the chiral symmetry expansion. The position of the poles in these amplitudes is related to the mass and width of the associated resonances that are generated without being explicitly included in the Lagrangian. The spectroscopic nature of these states can then be deduced by studying the behavior of these poles, through the Nc dependence of the Chiral Perturbation Theory parameters, which can be obtained from QCD in the large Nc limit.

$η\to π^0 γγ$ decay within unitarized chiral perturbation theory

We improve the calculations of the $η\to π^0 γγ$ decay within the context of meson chiral lagrangians. We use a chiral unitary approach for the meson-meson interaction, thus generating the $a_0(980)$ resonance and fixing the longstanding sign ambiguity on its contribution. This also allows us to calculate the loops with one vector meson exchange, thus removing a former source of uncertainty. In addition we ensure the consistency of the approach with other processes. First, by using vector meson dominance couplings normalized to agree with radiative vector meson decays. And, second, by checking the consistency of the calculations with the related $γγ\to π^0 η$ reaction. We find an $η\to π^0 γγ$ decay width of $0.47\pm 0.10$ eV, in clear disagreement with published data but in remarkable agreement with the most recent measurement.

Light meson resonances from unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory

We report on our recent progress in the generation of resonant behavior in unitarized meson-meson scattering amplitudes obtained from Chiral Perturbation Theory. These amplitudes provide simultaneously a remarkable description of the resonance region up to 1.2 GeV as well as the low energy region, since they respect the chiral symmetry expansion. By studying the position of the poles in these amplitudes it is possible to determine the mass and width of the associated resonances, as well as to get a hint on possible classification schemes, that could be of interest for the spectroscopy of the scalar sector.

Rho and Sigma Mesons in Unitarized Thermal ChPT

We present our recent results for the rho and sigma mesons considered as resonances in pion-pion scattering in a thermal bath. We use chiral perturbation theory to fourth order in p for the low energy behaviour, then extend the analysis via the unitarization method of the Inverse Amplitude into the resonance region. The width of the rho broadens about twice the amount required by phase space considerations alone, its mass staying practically constant up to temperatures of order 150 MeV. The sigma meson behaves in accordance to chiral symmetry restoration expectations.

Thermal Meson properties within Chiral Perturbation Theory

We report on our recent work about the description of a meson gas below the chiral phase transition within the framework of Chiral Perturbation Theory. As an alternative to the standard treatment, we present a calculation of the quark condensate which combines the virial expansion and the meson-meson scattering data. We have also calculated the full one-loop elastic pion scattering amplitude at finite temperature and we have unitarized the amplitude using the Inverse Amplitude Method in order to reproduce the temperature effects on the mass and width of the $ρ$ and $σ$ resonances. Our results show a clear increase of the thermal $ρ$ width, as expected from previous analysis. The results for the $σ$ are consistent with Chiral Symmetry Restoration. We comment on the relevance of our results within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.

Meson resonances from unitarized meson scattering at one loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We show the results for the scattering poles associated to the rho, f0, a0, K*, sigma and kappa resonances in meson-meson scattering. Our amplitudes are obtained from the complete one-loop meson-meson scattering amplitudes from Chiral Perturbation Theory. Once unitarized with the Inverse Amplitude Method, they describe remarkably well the data simultaneously in the low energy and resonance regions up to 1.2 GeV, using low energy parameters compatible with present determinations.

Finite Temperature Pion Scattering to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We present the pion-pion elastic scattering amplitude at finite temperature to one-loop in Chiral Perturbation Theory. The thermal scattering amplitude properly defined allows to generalize the perturbative unitarity relation to the $T\neq 0$ case. Our result provides a model independent prediction of an enhanced pion-pion low-energy phase shift with the temperature and it has physical applications within the context of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions.
