Exact Microcanonical Formulation and Thermodynamics of Equispaced Finite-Level Systems

We present an exact microcanonical formulation, in the thermodynamic limit, for a system of $N$ noninteracting particles with $p$ equally spaced energy levels $\{0,ε,2ε,\ldots,(p-1)ε\}$. Writing the microcanonical multiplicity $Ω_p(E,N)$ as the coefficient of a generating function and evaluating the resulting representation by saddle-point analysis, we derive analytical expressions for the entropy per particle $s(u,p)$ and inverse temperature $β(u,p)$, with $u=E/(Nε)$ in the interval $[0,p-1]$. The formulation applies to arbitrary $p$ and recovers the known cases $p=2$, $p=3$, and $p\to\infty$. For finite $p$, the bounded spectrum implies an entropy maximum at $u_c=(p-1)/2$, where $β$ vanishes and changes sign. In the limit $p\to\infty$, the upper spectral bound is lost, the finite-energy entropy maximum disappears, and no negative-temperature branch remains. To our knowledge, this is the first general thermodynamic-limit microcanonical solution for arbitrary $p$. It therefore provides a unified framework for the thermodynamics of equispaced finite-level systems and their bounded-spectrum crossover with increasing $p$.

Electrostatics of a Finite Conducting Cylinder: Elliptic-Kernel Integral Equation and Capacitance Asymptotics

We study the electrostatics of a thin, finite-length conducting cylindrical shell held at constant potential V0. Exploiting axial symmetry, we recast the problem as a one-dimensional singular integral equation for the axial surface-charge density, with a kernel written in terms of complete elliptic integrals. A Chebyshev-weighted collocation scheme that incorporates the square-root edge singularity yields rapidly convergent charge profiles and dimensionless capacitances for arbitrary aspect ratios L/a, recovering known long- and short-cylinder limits and providing accurate benchmark values in the intermediate regime. The method offers a compact, numerically robust reference formulation for the electrostatics of finite cylindrical conductors.

Electrostatics of a finite-thickness conducting cylindrical shell: coupled elliptic-kernel integral equations

We develop an exact electrostatic formulation for a finite-length conducting cylindrical shell of finite thickness separating two dielectric media with arbitrary permittivity contrast. The boundary-value problem is reduced to a coupled system of singular integral equations with elliptic kernels governing the induced surface-charge densities on the inner and outer faces. High-accuracy numerical solutions are combined with a systematic asymptotic analysis that elucidates the interplay between geometry, thickness, and dielectric contrast. All classical limiting regimes are recovered, including the slender-body limit, the short-cylinder (ring-like) asymptote, and the thick-shell regime dominated by the outer surface. We demonstrate that the logarithmic short-cylinder behavior of zero-thickness models is a singular feature, which is regularized for any finite thickness, giving rise instead to a finite capacitance plateau. The asymptotic structure of the coupled equations explains both the electrostatic decoupling of the inner cavity in the thick-shell limit and the redistribution of charge between the two surfaces. The results provide exact benchmarks for finite cylindrical conductors, bridging classical analytical treatments and modern numerical approaches, and furnish a high-accuracy reference solution for the validation of axisymmetric electrostatic solvers.

Projectile motion: the "coming and going" phenomenon

An interesting phenomenon that occurs in projectile motion, the "coming and going", is analyzed considering linear air resistance force. By performing both approximate and numerical analysis, it is showed how a determined critical angle and an interesting geometrical property of projectiles can change due to variation on the linear air resistance coefficient.

Phase transition induced for external field in tree-dimensional isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet

In this paper, we report mean-field and effective-field renormalization group calculations on the isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic model under a longitudinal magnetic field. As is already known, these methods, denoted by MFRG and EFRG, are based on the comparison of two clusters of different sizes, each of them trying to mimic certain Bravais lattice. Our attention has been on the obtantion of the critical frontier in the plane of temperature versus magnetic field, for the simple cubic and the body-centered cubic lattices. We used clusters with $N=1,2,4$ spins so as to implement MFRG-12, EFRG-12 and EFRG-24 numerical equations. Consequently, the resulting frontier lines show that EFRG approach overcomes the MFRG problems when clusters of larger sizes are considered.

The magnetic susceptibility on the transverse antiferromagnetic Ising model: Analysis of the reentrant behaviour

We study the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model in both uniform longitudinal ($H$) and transverse ($Ω$) magnetic fields by using the effective-field theory with finite cluster $N=1$ spin (EFT-1). We analyzed the behavior of the magnetic susceptibility to investigate the reentrant phenomena we have seen the same phase diagram previously obtained in another papers. Our results shows the presence of two divergences in the susceptibility that indicates the existence of a reentrant behaviour.

Thermodynamic properties of rod-like chains: entropic sampling simulations

In this work we apply entropic sampling simulations to a three-state model which has exact solutions in the microcanonical and grand-canonical ensembles. We consider $N$ chains placed on an unidimensional lattice, such that each site may assume one of three-states: empty (state 1), with a single molecule energetically null (state 2), and with a single molecule with energy $\varepsilon$ (state 3). Each molecule, which we will treat here as dimers, consists of two monomers connected one to each other by a rod. The thermodynamic properties, such as internal energy, densities of dimers and specific heat were obtained as functions of temperature where the analytic results in the micro-canonical and grand-canonical ensembles were successfully confirmed by the entropic sampling simulations.

Magnetization plateaus in the antiferromagnetic Ising chain with single-ion anisotropy and quenched disorder

We have studied the presence of plateaus on the low-temperature magnetization of an antiferromagnetic spin-1 chain, as an external uniform magnetic field is varied. A crystal-field interaction is present in the model and the exchange constants follow a random quenched (Bernoulli or Gaussian) distribution. Using a transfer-matrix technique we calculate the largest Lyapunov exponent and, from it, the magnetization at low temperatures as a function of the magnetic field, for different values of the crystal-field and of the width of the distributions. For the Bernoulli distribution, the number of plateaus increases, with respect to the uniform case (F. Litaiff, J. R. de Sousa, and N. S. Branco, Sol. St. Comm. {\bf 147}, 494 (2008)) and their presence can be linked to different ground states, when the magnetic field is varied. For the Gaussian distributions, the uniform scenario is maintained, for small widths, but the plateaus structure disappears, as the width increases.

Qualitative aspects of the phase diagram of J1-J2 model on the cubic lattice

The qualitative aspects of the phase diagram of the Ising model on the cubic lattice, with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions ($J_{1}$) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor couplings ($J_{2}$) are analyzed in the plane temperature versus $α$, where $α=J_{2}/|J_{1}|$ is the frustration parameter. We used the original Wang-Landau sampling and the standard Metropolis algorithm to confront past results of this model obtained by the effective-field theory (EFT) for the cubic lattice. Our numerical results suggest that the predictions of the EFT are in general qualitatively correct, but the low-temperature reentrant behavior, observed in the frontier separating the ferromagnetic and the colinear order, is an artifact of the EFT approach and should disappear when we consider Monte Carlo simulations of the model. In addition, our results indicate that the continuous phase transition between the Ferromagnetic and the Paramagnetic phases, that occurs for $0.0 \leq α< 0.25$, belongs to the universality class of the three-dimensional pure Ising Model.

Phase diagrams of the transverse Ising antiferromagnet in the presence of the longitudinal magnetic field

In this paper we study the critical behavior of the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic Ising model in both uniform longitudinal ($H$) and transverse ($Ω$) magnetic fields. Using the effective-field theory (EFT) with correlation in single site cluster we calculate the phase diagrams in the $H-T$ and $Ω-T$ planes for the square ($z=4$) lattices. We have only found second order phase transitions for all values of fields and reentrant behavior was not observed.

The quantum J_{1}-J_{1'}-J_{2} spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet: A variational method study

The phase transition of the quantum spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferroferromagnet on an anisotropic square lattice is studied by using a variational treatment. The model is described by the Heisenberg Hamiltonian with two antiferromagnetic interactions: nearest-neighbor (NN) with different coupling strengths J_{1} and J_{1'} along x and y directions competing with a next-nearest-neighbor coupling J_{2} (NNN). The ground state phase diagram in the (λ,α) space, where λ=J_{1'}/J_{1} and α=J_{2}/J_{1}, is obtained. Depending on the values of λ and α, we obtain three different states: antiferromagnetic (AF), collinear antiferromagnetic (CAF) and quantum paramagnetic (QP). For an intermediate region λ_{1}<λ<1 we observe a QP state between the ordered AF and CAF phases, which disappears for λ above some critical value λ_{1}. The boundaries between these ordered phases merge at the quantum critical endpoint (QCE). Below this QCE there is again a direct first-order transition between the AF and CAF phases, with a behavior approximately described by the classical line α_{c}{\simeq}λ/2.

Phase Diagram of the Two-Dimensional Ising Model with Random Competing Interactions

An Ising model with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interactions $J_{1}$ ($J_{1}>0$) and random next-nearest-neighbor interactions [$+J_{2}$ with probability $p$ and $-J_{2}$ with probability $(1-p)$; $J_{2}>0$] is studied within the framework of an effective-field theory based on the differential-operator technique. The order parameters are calculated, considering finite clusters with $n=1,2, {\rm and} 4$ spins, using the standard approximation of neglecting correlations. A phase diagram is obtained in the plane temperature versus $p$, for the particular case $J_{1}=J_{2}$, showing both superantiferromagnetic (low $p$) and ferromagnetic (higher values of $p$) orderings at low temperatures.

Magnetization Plateaux in the Antiferromagnetic Ising Chain with Single-Ion Anisotropy

Two one-dimensional spin-1 antiferromagnetic Ising models with a single-ion anisotropy under external magnetic field at low temperatures are exactly investigated by the transfer-matrix technique. The magnetization per spin ($m$) is obtained for the two types of models (denoted by model 1 and 2) as an explicit function of the magnetic field ($H$%) and of the anisotropy parameter ($D$). Model 1 is an extension of the recently one treated by Ohanyan and Ananikian [\emph{Phys. Lett. A} \textbf{% 307} (2003) 76]: we have generalized their model to the spin-1 case and a single-ion anisotropy term have been included. In the limit of positive (or null) anisotropy ($D\geq 0$) and strong antiferromagnetic coupling ($α=J_{A}/J_{F}\geq 3$) the $m \times H$ curves are qualitatively the same as for the spin $S=1/2$ case, with the presence of only one plateau at $m/m_{sat}=1/3$. On the other hand, for negative anisotropy ($D<0$) we observe more plateaux ($m=1/6$ and 2/3), which depend on the values of $D$ and $% α$. The second model (model 2) is the same as the one recently studied by Chen et al. [\emph{J. Mag. Mag. Mat. }\textbf{262} (2003) 258)] using Monte Carlo simulation; here, the model is treated within an exact transfer-matrix framework.

Variational method study of the spin-1 Ising model with biaxial crystal-field anisotropy

The phase diagram of the spin-1 Ising model in the presence of a biaxial crystal-field anisotropy is studied within the framework of a variational approach, based on the Bogolyubov inequality for the free energy. We have investigated the effects of a transverse crystal-field $D_{y}$ on the phase diagram in the $T-D_{x}$ plane. Results obtained by using effective-field theory (EFT) on the honeycomb (% $z=3$), square ($z=4$) and simple cubic ($z=6$) lattices ($z$ is the coordination number) show only continuous phase transitions, while the variational approach presents first-order and continuous phase transitions for $D_{y}=0$% . We have also used the EFT for larger values of $z$ and we observe the presence of tricritical points in the phase diagrams, for $z\geq 7$, in accordance with the variational approach results.

Anisotropic Heisenberg model on hierarchical lattices with aperiodic interactions: a renormalization-group approach

Using a real-space renormalization-group approximation, we study the anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model on hierarchical lattices, with interactions following aperiodic sequences. Three different sequences are considered, with relevant and irrelevant fluctuations, according to the Luck-Harris criterion. The phase diagram is discussed as a function of the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ (such that $Δ=0$ and $Δ=1$ correspond to the isotropic Heisenberg and Ising models, respectively). We find three different types of phase diagrams, with general characteristics: the isotropic Heisenberg plane is always an invariant one (as expected by symmetry arguments) and the critical behavior of the anisotropic Heisenberg model is governed by fixed points on the Ising-model plane. Our results for the isotropic Heisenberg model show that the relevance or irrelevance of aperiodic models, when compared to their uniform counterpart, is as predicted by the Harris-Luck criterion. A low-temperature renormalization-group procedure was applied to the \textit{classical} isotropic Heisenberg model in two-dimensional hierarchical lattices: the relevance criterion is obtained, again in accordance with the Harris-Luck criterion.

Two-dimensional quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg model with competing interactions

We study the quantum spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in two dimensions, interacting through a nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange ($J$) and a ferromagnetic dipolar-like interaction ($J_d$), using double-time Green's function, decoupled within the random phase approximation (RPA). We obtain the dependence of $k_B T_c/J_d$ as a function of frustration parameter $δ$, where $T_c$ is the ferromagnetic (F) transition temperature and $δ$ is the ratio between the strengths of the exchange and dipolar interaction (i.e., $δ= J/J_d$). The transition temperature between the F and paramagnetic phases decreases with $δ$, as expected, but goes to zero at a finite value of this parameter, namely $δ= δ_c = π/8$. At T=0 (quantum phase transition), we analyze the critical parameter $δ_c(p)$ for the general case of an exchange interaction in the form $J_{ij}=J_d/r_{ij}^{p}$, where ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases are present.

Effects of anisotropy on a quantum Heisenberg spin glass in a three-dimensional hierarchical lattice

We study the anisotropic Heisenberg spin-glass model in a three-dimensional hierarchical lattice (designed to approximate the cubic lattice), within a real-space renormalization-group approach. Two different initial probability distributions for the exchange interaction ($J_{ij}$), Gaussian and uniform, are used, with zero mean and width $\bar{J}$. The $(kT/\bar{J}) \times Δ_0$ phase diagram is obtained, where $T$ is the temperature, $Δ_0$ is the first moment of the probability distribution for the uniaxial anisotropy, and $k$ is the Boltzmann constant. For the Ising model ($Δ_0=1$), there is a spin-glass phase at low temperatures (high $\bar{J}$) and a paramagnetic phase at high temperatures (low $\bar{J}$). For the isotropic Heisenberg model ($Δ_0=0$), our results indicate no spin-glass phase at finite temperatures. The transition temperature between the spin-glass and paramagnetic phase decreases with $Δ_0$, as expected, but goes to zero at a finite value of the anisotropy parameter, namely $Δ_0 = Δ_c \sim 0.59$. Our results indicate that the whole transition line, between the paramagnetic and the spin-glass phases, for $Δ_c \leq Δ_0 < 1$, belongs to the same universality class as the transition for the Ising spin glass.
