Nonlinear quantum optics for spinor slow light

We investigate quantum nonlinear effects at a level of individual quanta in a double tripod atom-light coupling scheme involving two atomic Rydberg states. In such a scheme the slow light coherently coupled to strongly interacting Rydberg states represents a two-component or spinor light. The scheme provides additional possibilities for the control and manipulation of light quanta. A distinctive feature of the proposed setup is that it combines the spin-orbit coupling for the spinor slow light with an interaction between the photons, enabling generation of the second probe beam even when two-photon detuning is zero. Furthermore, the interaction between the photons can become repulsive if the one-photon detunings have opposite signs. This is different from a single ladder atom-light coupling scheme, in which the interaction between the photons is attractive for both positive and negative detunings, as long as the Rabi frequency of the control beam is not too large.

Electromagnetically induced transparency and nonlinear pulse propagation in a combined tripod and $Λ$ atom-light coupling scheme

We consider propagation of a probe pulse in an atomic medium characterized by a combined tripod and Lambda ($Λ$) atom-light coupling scheme. The scheme involves three atomic ground states coupled to two excited states by five light fields. It is demonstrated that dark states can be formed for such an atom-light coupling. This is essential for formation of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and slow light. In the limiting cases the scheme reduces to conventional $Λ$- or $N$-type atom-light couplings providing the EIT or absorption, respectively. Thus the atomic system can experience a transition from the EIT to the absorption by changing the amplitudes or phases of control lasers. Subsequently the scheme is employed to analyze the nonlinear pulse propagation using the coupled Maxwell-Bloch equations. It is shown that generation of stable slow light optical solitons is possible in such a five-level combined tripod and $Λ$ atomic system.

Spin Hall mode in a trapped thermal Rashba gas

We theoretically investigate a two-dimensional harmonically-trapped gas of identical atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and no interatomic interactions. In analogy with the spin Hall effect in uniform space, the gas exhibits a spin Hall mode. In particular, in response to a displacement of the center-of-mass of the system, spin-dipole moment oscillations occur. We determine the properties of these oscillations exactly, and find that their amplitude strongly depends on the spin-orbit coupling strength and the quantum statistics of the particles.

Phase space curvature in spin-orbit coupled ultracold atom systems

We consider a system with spin-orbit coupling and derive equations of motion which include the effects of Berry curvatures. We apply these equations to investigate the dynamics of particles with equal Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling in one dimension. In our derivation, the adiabatic transformation is performed first and leads to quantum Heisenberg equations of motion for momentum and position operators. These equations explicitly contain position-space, momentum-space, and phase-space Berry curvature terms. Subsequently, we perform the semiclassical approximation, and obtain the semiclassical equations of motion. Taking the low-Berry-curvature limit results in equations that can be directly compared to previous results for the motion of wavepackets. Finally, we show that in the semiclassical regime, the effective mass of the equal Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupled system can be viewed as a direct effect of the phase-space Berry curvature.

Omnidirectional spin Hall effect in a Weyl spin-orbit coupled atomic gas

We show that in the presence of a three-dimensional (Weyl) spin-orbit coupling, a transverse spin current is generated in response to either a constant spin-independent force or a time-dependent Zeeman field in an arbitrary direction. This effect is the non-Abelian counterpart of the universal intrinsic spin Hall effect characteristic to the two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We quantify the strength of such an omnidirectional spin Hall effect by calculating the corresponding conductivity for fermions and non-condensed bosons. The absence of any kind of disorder in ultracold-atom systems makes the observation of this effect viable.

Creation of two-photon states via interactions between Rydberg atoms during light storage

We propose a new method to create two-photon states in a controllable way using interaction between the Rydberg atoms during the storage and retrieval of slow light. A distinctive feature of the suggested procedure is that the slow light is stored into a superposition of two atomic coherences under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). Interaction between the atoms during the storage period creates entangled pairs of atoms in a superposition state that is orthogonal to the initially stored state. Restoring the slow light from this new atomic state one can produce a two photon state with a second-order correlation function determined by the atom-atom interaction and the storage time. Therefore the measurement of the restored light allows one to probe the atom-atom coupling by optical means with a sensitivity that can be increased by extending the storage time. As a realization of this idea we consider a many-body Ramsey-type technique which involves pi/2 pulses creating a superposition of Rydberg states at the beginning and the end of the storage period. In that case the regenerated light is due to the resonance dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms in the Rydberg states.

Rashba-type Spin-orbit Coupling in Bilayer Bose-Einstein Condensates

We explore a new way of producing the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC) for ultracold atoms by using a two-component (spinor) atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a bilayer geometry. The SOC of the Rashba type is created if the atoms pick up a π phase after completing a cyclic transition between four combined spin-layer states composed of two spin and two layer states. The cyclic coupling of the spin-layer states is carried out by combining an intralayer Raman coupling and an interlayer laser assisted tunneling. We theoretically determine the ground-state phases of the spin-orbit-coupled BEC for various strengths of the atom-atom interaction and the laser-assisted coupling. It is shown that the bilayer scheme provides a diverse ground-state phase diagram. In an intermediate range of the atom-light coupling two interlacing lattices of half- skyrmions and half-antiskyrmions are spontaneously created. In the strong-coupling regime, where the SOC of the Rashba-type is formed, the ground state represents plane-wave or standing-wave phases depending on the interaction between the atoms. A variational analysis is shown to be in a good agreement with the numerical results.

Coupled nonlinear stochastic differential equations generating arbitrary distributed observable with 1/f noise

Nonlinear stochastic differential equations provide one of the mathematical models yielding 1/f noise. However, the drawback of a single equation as a source of 1/f noise is the necessity of power-law steady-state probability density of the signal. In this paper we generalize this model and propose a system of two coupled nonlinear stochastic differential equations. The equations are derived from the scaling properties necessary for the achievement of 1/f noise. The first equation describes the changes of the signal, whereas the second equation represents a fluctuating rate of change. The proposed coupled stochastic differential equations allows us to obtain 1/f spectrum in a wide range of frequencies together with the almost arbitrary steady-state density of the signal.

Stochastic dynamics of N correlated binary variables and non-extensive statistical mechanics

The non-extensive statistical mechanics has been applied to describe a variety of complex systems with inherent correlations and feedback loops. Here we present a dynamical model based on previously proposed static model exhibiting in the thermodynamic limit the extensivity of the Tsallis entropy with q<1 as well as a q-Gaussian distribution. The dynamical model consists of a one-dimensional ring of particles characterized by correlated binary random variables, which are allowed to flip according to a simple random walk rule. The proposed dynamical model provides an insight how a mesoscopic dynamics characterized by the non-extensive statistical mechanics could emerge from a microscopic description of the system.

1/f noise from the nonlinear transformations of the variables

The origin of the low-frequency noise with power spectrum $1/f^β$ (also known as $1/f$ fluctuations or flicker noise) remains a challenge. Recently, the nonlinear stochastic differential equations for modeling $1/f^β$ noise have been proposed and analyzed. Here we use the self-similarity properties of this model with respect to the nonlinear transformations of the variable of these equations and show that $1/f^β$ noise of the observable may yield from the power-law transformations of well-known standard processes, like the Brownian motion, Bessel and similar stochastic processes. Analytical and numerical investigations of such techniques for modeling processes with $1/f^β$ fluctuations is presented.

1/f noise from point process and time-subordinated Langevin equations

Internal mechanism leading to the emergence of the widely occurring 1/f noise still remains an open issue. In this paper we investigate the distinction between internal time of the system and the physical time as a source of 1/f noise. After demonstrating the appearance of 1/f noise in the earlier proposed point process model, we generalize it starting from a stochastic differential equation which describes a Brownian-like motion in the internal (operational) time. We consider this equation together with an additional equation relating the internal time to the external (physical) time. We show that the relation between the internal time and the physical time that depends on the intensity of the signal can lead to 1/f noise in a wide interval of frequencies. The present model can be useful for the explanation of the appearance of 1/f noise in different systems.

Position-dependent spin-orbit coupling for ultracold atoms

We theoretically explore atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) subject to position-dependent spin-orbit coupling (SOC). This SOC can be produced by cyclically laser coupling four internal atomic ground (or metastable) states in an environment where the detuning from resonance depends on position. The resulting spin-orbit coupled BEC phase-separates into domains, each of which contain density modulations - stripes - aligned either along the x or y direction. In each domain, the stripe orientation is determined by the sign of the local detuning. When these stripes have mismatched spatial periods along domain boundaries, non-trivial topological spin textures form at the interface, including skyrmions-like spin vortices and anti-vortices. In contrast to vortices present in conventional rotating BECs, these spin-vortices are stable topological defects that are not present in the corresponding homogenous stripe-phase spin-orbit coupled BECs.

Superluminal two-color light in multiple Raman gain medium

We investigate theoretically the formation of two-component light with superluminal group velocity in a medium controlled by four Raman pump fields. In such an optical scheme only a particular combination of the probe fields is coupled to the matter and exhibits superluminal propagation, the orthogonal combination is uncoupled. The individual probe fields do not have a definite group velocity in the medium. Calculations demonstrate that this superluminal component experiences an envelope advancement in the medium with respect to the propagation in vacuum.

Scaling properties of signals as origin of 1/f noise

There are several mathematical models yielding 1/f noise. For example, 1/f spectrum can be obtained from stochastic sequence of pulses having power-law distribution of pulse durations or from nonlinear stochastic differential equations. We show that a couple of seemingly different models exhibiting 1/f spectrum are due to the similar scaling properties of the signals. In addition, we demonstrate a connection between signals with the power-law behavior of the power spectral density generated by the nonlinear stochastic differential equations and modeled by a sequence of random different pulses. An approximation of solutions of the nonlinear stochastic differential equations by the sequence of pulses correctly reproduces the power-law parts of the probability density function and of the power spectral density. This connection provides further insights into the origin of 1/f noise.

Synthetic gauge fields in synthetic dimensions

We describe a simple technique for generating a cold-atom lattice pierced by a uniform magnetic field. Our method is to extend a one-dimensional optical lattice into the "dimension" provided by the internal atomic degrees of freedom, yielding a synthetic 2D lattice. Suitable laser-coupling between these internal states leads to a uniform magnetic flux within the 2D lattice. We show that this setup reproduces the main features of magnetic lattice systems, such as the fractal Hofstadter butterfly spectrum and the chiral edge states of the associated Chern insulating phases.

Transfer of orbital angular momentum of light using two component slow light

We study the manipulation of slow light with an orbital angular momentum propagating in a cloud of cold atoms. Atoms are affected by four copropagating control laser beams in a double tripod configuration of the atomic energy levels involved, allowing to minimize the losses at the vortex core of the control beams. In such a situation the atomic medium is transparent for a pair of copropagating probe fields, leading to the creation of two-component (spinor) slow light. We study the interaction between the probe fields when two control beams carry optical vortices of opposite helicity. As a result, a transfer of the optical vortex takes place from the control to the probe fields without switching off and on the control beams. This feature is missing in a single tripod scheme where the optical vortex can be transferred from the control to the probe field only during either the storage or retrieval of light.

Intermittency in relation with 1/f noise and stochastic differential equations

One of the models of intermittency is on-off intermittency, arising due to time-dependent forcing of a bifurcation parameter through a bifurcation point. For on-off intermittency the power spectral density of the time-dependent deviation from the invariant subspace in a low frequency region exhibits 1/\sqrt{f} power-law noise. Here we investigate a mechanism of intermittency, similar to the on-off intermittency, occurring in nonlinear dynamical systems with invariant subspace. In contrast to the on-off intermittency, we consider the case where the transverse Lyapunov exponent is zero. We show that for such nonlinear dynamical systems the power spectral density of the deviation from the invariant subspace can have 1/f^βform in a wide range of frequencies. That is, such nonlinear systems exhibit 1/f noise. The connection with the stochastic differential equations generating 1/f^βnoise is established and analyzed, as well.

Tsallis distributions and 1/f noise from nonlinear stochastic differential equations

Probability distributions which emerge from the formalism of nonextensive statistical mechanics have been applied to a variety of problems. In this paper we unite modeling of such distributions with the model of widespread 1/f noise. We propose a class of nonlinear stochastic differential equations giving both the q-exponential or q-Gaussian distributions of signal intensity, revealing long-range correlations and 1/f^beta behavior of the power spectral density. The superstatistical framework to get 1/f^beta noise with q-exponential and q-Gaussian distributions of the signal intensity in is proposed, as well.
