Herding model and 1/f noise

We provide evidence that for some values of the parameters a simple agent based model, describing herding behavior, yields signals with 1/f power spectral density. We derive a non-linear stochastic differential equation for the ratio of number of agents and show, that it has the form proposed earlier for modeling of 1/f^beta noise with different exponents beta. The non-linear terms in the transition probabilities, quantifying the herding behavior, are crucial to the appearance of 1/f noise. Thus, the herding dynamics can be seen as a microscopic explanation of the proposed non-linear stochastic differential equations generating signals with 1/f^beta spectrum. We also consider the possible feedback of macroscopic state on microscopic transition probabilities strengthening the non-linearity of equations and providing more opportunities in the modeling of processes exhibiting power-law statistics.

Engineering Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling for cold atoms in a double tripod configuration

We study laser induced spin-orbit (SO) coupling in cold atom systems where lasers couple three internal states to a pair of excited states, in a double tripod topology. Proper choice of laser amplitudes and phases produces a Hamiltonian with a doubly degenerate ground state separated from the remaining "excited" eigenstates by gaps determined by the Rabi frequencies of the atom-light coupling. After eliminating the excited states with a Born- Oppenheimer approximation, the Hamiltonian of the remaining two states includes Dresselhaus (or equivalently Rashba) SO coupling. Unlike earlier proposals, here the SO coupled states are the two lowest energy "dressed" spin states and are thus immune to collisional relaxation. Finally, we discuss a specific implementation of our system using Raman transitions between different hyperfine states within the electronic ground state manifold of nuclear spin I = 3/2 alkali atoms.

Optical vortices of slow light using tripod scheme

We consider propagation, storing and retrieval of slow light (probe beam) in a resonant atomic medium illuminated by two control laser beams of larger intensity. The probe and two control beams act on atoms in a tripod configuration of the light-matter coupling. The first control beam is allowed to have an orbital angular momentum (OAM). Application of the second vortex-free control laser ensures the adiabatic (lossles) propagation of the probe beam at the vortex core where the intensity of the first control laser goes to zero. Storing and release of the probe beam is accomplished by switching off and on the control laser beams leading to the transfer of the optical vortex from the first control beam to the regenerated probe field. A part of the stored probe beam remains frozen in the medium in the form of atomic spin excitations, the number of which increases with increasing the intensity of the second control laser. We analyse such losses in the regenerated probe beam and provide conditions for the optical vortex of the control beam to be transferred efficiently to the restored probe beam.

Photonic band-gap properties for two-component slow light

We consider two-component "spinor" slow light in an ensemble of atoms coherently driven by two pairs of counterpropagating control laser fields in a double tripod-type linkage scheme. We derive an equation of motion for the spinor slow light (SSL) representing an effective Dirac equation for a massive particle with the mass determined by the two-photon detuning. By changing the detuning the atomic medium acts as a photonic crystal with a controllable band gap. If the frequency of the incident probe light lies within the band gap, the light tunnels through the sample. For frequencies outside the band gap, the transmission probability oscillates with increasing length of the sample. In both cases the reflection takes place into the complementary mode of the probe field. We investigate the influence of the finite excited state lifetime on the transmission and reflection coefficients of the probe light. We discuss possible experimental implementations of the SSL using alkali atoms such as Rubidium or Sodium.

Slow polaritons with orbital angular momentum in atomic gases

Polariton formalism is applied for studying the propagation of a probe field of light in a cloud of cold atoms influenced by two control laser beams of larger intensity. The laser beams couple resonantly three hyperfine atomic ground states to a common excited state thus forming a tripod configuration of the atomic energy levels involved. The first control beam can have an optical vortex with the intensity of the beam going to zero at the vortex core. The second control beam without a vortex ensures the loseless (adiabatic) propagation of the probe beam at a vortex core of the first control laser. We investigate the storage of the probe pulse into atomic coherences by switching off the control beams, as well as its subsequent retrieval by switching the control beams on. The optical vortex is transferred from the control to the probe fields during the storage or retrieval of the probe field. We analyze conditions for the vortex to be transferred efficiently to the regenerated probe beam and discuss possibilities of experimental implementation of the proposed scheme using atoms like rubidium or sodium.

Spectrum of pi electrons in bilayer graphene nanoribbons and nanotubes: an analytical approach

We present an analytical description of pi electrons of a finite size bilayer graphene within a framework of the tight-binding model. The bilayered structures considered here are characterized by a rectangular geometry and have a finite size in one or both directions with armchair- and zigzag-shaped edges. We provide an exact analytical description of the spectrum of pi electrons in the zigzag and armchair bilayer graphene nanoribbons and nanotubes. We analyze the dispersion relations, the density of states, and the conductance quantization.

Spinor Slow-Light and Dirac particles with variable mass

We consider the interaction of two weak probe fields of light with an atomic ensemble coherently driven by two pairs of standing wave laser fields in a tripod-type linkage scheme. The system is shown to exhibit a Dirac-like spectrum for light-matter quasi-particles with multiple dark-states, termed spinor slow-light polaritons (SSP). They posses an "effective speed of light" given by the group-velocity of slow-light, and can be made massive by inducing a small two-photon detuning. Control of the two-photon detuning can be used to locally vary the mass including a sign flip. This allows e.g. the implementation of the random-mass Dirac model for which localized zero-energy (mid-gap) states exist with unsual long-range correlations.

1/f noise from nonlinear stochastic differential equations

We consider a class of nonlinear stochastic differential equations, giving the power-law behavior of the power spectral density in any desirably wide range of frequency. Such equations were obtained starting from the point process models of 1/f^b noise. In this article the power-law behavior of spectrum is derived directly from the stochastic differential equations, without using the point process models. The analysis reveals that the power spectrum may be represented as a sum of the Lorentzian spectra. Such a derivation provides additional justification of equations, expands the class of equations generating 1/f^b noise, and provides further insights into the origin of 1/f^b noise.

Modeling non-Gaussian 1/f Noise by the Stochastic Differential Equations

We consider stochastic model based on the linear stochastic differential equation with the linear relaxation and with the diffusion-like fluctuations of the relaxation rate. The model generates monofractal signals with the non-Gaussian power-law distributions and 1/f^b noise.

A long-range memory stochastic model of the return in financial markets

We present a nonlinear stochastic differential equation (SDE) which mimics the probability density function (PDF) of the return and the power spectrum of the absolute return in financial markets. Absolute return as a measure of market volatility is considered in the proposed model as a long-range memory stochastic variable. The SDE is obtained from the analogy with earlier proposed model of trading activity in the financial markets and generalized within the nonextensive statistical mechanics framework. The proposed stochastic model generates time series of the return with two power law statistics, i.e., the PDF and the power spectral density, reproducing the empirical data for the one minute trading return in the NYSE.

Effective magnetic fields for stationary light

We describe a method to create effective gauge potentials for stationary-light polaritons in two or three spatial dimensions. When stationary light is created in the interaction with a uniformly rotating ensemble of coherently driven double $Λ$ atoms, the equation of motion is that of a massive Schrödinger particle in an effective magnetic field. In addition a repulsive scalar potential emerges which can however be compensated by a space-dependent detuning. Since the effective interaction area for the polaritons can be made large, degenerate Landau levels can be created with degeneracy well above 100. This opens the possibility to study the bosonic analogue of the fractional quantum Hall effect for interacting stationary-light polaritons.

Modelling of 1/f noise by sequences of stochastic pulses of different duration

We present and analyze the simple analytically solvable model of 1/f noise, which can be relevant for the understanding of the origin, main properties and parameter dependencies of the flicker noise. In the model, the currents or signals represented as sequences of the random pulses, which recurrence time intervals between transit times of pulses are uncorrelated with the shape of the pulse, are analyzed. It is shown that for the pulses of fixed area with random duration, distributed uniformly in a wide interval, 1/f behavior of the power spectrum of the signal or current in wide range of frequency may be obtained.

Quasi-relativistic behavior of cold atoms in light fields

We study the influence of three laser beams on the center of mass motion of cold atoms with internal energy levels in a tripod configuration. We show that similar to electrons in graphene the atomic motion can be equivalent to the dynamics of ultra-relativistic two-component Dirac fermions. We propose and analyze an experimental setup for observing such a quasi-relativistic motion of ultracold atoms. We demonstrate that the atoms can experience negative refraction and focussing by Veselago-type lenses. We also show how the chiral nature of the atomic motion manifests itself as an oscillation of the atomic internal state population which depends strongly on the direction of the center of mass motion. For certain directions an atom remains in its initial state, whereas for other directions the populations undergo oscillations between a pair of internal states.

Formation of solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates by dark-state adiabatic passage

We propose a new method of creating solitons in elongated Bose-Einstein Condensates (BECs) by sweeping three laser beams through the BEC. If one of the beams is in the first order (TEM10) Hermite-Gaussian mode, its amplitude has a transversal phase slip which can be transferred to the atoms creating a soliton. Using this method it is possible to circumvent the restriction set by the diffraction limit inherent to conventional methods such as phase imprinting. The method allows one to create multicomponent (vector) solitons of the dark-bright form as well as the dark-dark combination. In addition it is possible to create in a controllable way two or more dark solitons with very small velocity and close to each other for studying their collisional properties.

Trading activity as driven Poisson process: comparison with empirical data

We propose the point process model as the Poissonian-like stochastic sequence with slowly diffusing mean rate and adjust the parameters of the model to the empirical data of trading activity for 26 stocks traded on NYSE. The proposed scaled stochastic differential equation provides the universal description of the trading activities with the same parameters applicable for all stocks.

Polarisation rotation of slow light with orbital angular momentum in ultracold atomic gases

We consider the propagation of slow light with an orbital angular momentum (OAM) in a moving atomic medium. We have derived a general equation of motion and applied it in analysing propagation of slow light with an OAM in a rotating medium, such as a vortex lattice. We have shown that the OAM of slow light manifests itself in a rotation of the polarisation plane of linearly polarised light. To extract a pure rotational phase shift, we suggest to measure a difference in the angle of the polarisation plane rotation by two consecutive light beams with opposite OAM. The differential angle $Δα_{\ell}$ is proportional to the rotation frequency of the medium $ω_{\mathrm{rot}}$ and the winding number $\ell$ of light, and is inversely proportional to the group velocity of light. For slow light the angle $Δα_{\ell}$ should be large enough to be detectable. The effect can be used as a tool for measuring the rotation frequency $ω_{\mathrm{rot}}$ of the medium.

Quantum Trajectory method for the Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects

We perform stochastic simulations of the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects for two level system and for the decaying one. Instead of simple projection postulate approach, a more realistic model of a detector interacting with the environment is used. The influence of the environment is taken into account using the quantum trajectory method. The simulation of the measurement for a single system exhibits the probabilistic behavior showing the collapse of the wave-packet. When a large ensemble is analysed using the quantum trajectory method, the results are the same as those produced using the density matrix method. The results of numerical calculations are compared with the analytical expressions for the decay rate of the measured system and a good agreement is found. Since the analytical expressions depend on the duration of the measurement only, the agreement with the numerical calculations shows that otherparameters of the model are not important.

We consider the signatures of the Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a degenerate gas of electrically neutral atomic fermions. An effective magnetic field is achieved by applying two incident light beams with a high orbital angular momentum. We show how states corresponding to completely filled Landau levels are obtained and discuss various possibilities to measure the incompressible nature of the trapped two-dimensional gas
