Relativistic models for quasi-elastic neutrino scattering

We present quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus cross sections in the energy range from 150 MeV up to 5 GeV for the target nuclei 12C and 56Fe. A relativistic description of the nuclear dynamics and the neutrino-nucleus coupling is adopted. For the treatment of final-state interactions (FSI) we rely on two frameworks succesfully applied to exclusive electron-nucleus scattering: a relativistic optical potential and a relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation. At lower energies, the optical-potential approach is considered to be the optimum choice, whereas at high energies a Glauber approach is more natural. Comparing the results of both calculations, it is found that the Glauber approach yields valid results down to the remarkably small nucleon kinetic energies of 200 MeV. We argue that the nuclear transparencies extracted from A(e,e'p) measurements can be used to obtain realistic estimates of the effect of FSI mechanisms on quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus cross sections. We present two independent relativistic plane-wave impulse approximation (RPWIA) calculations of quasi-elastic neutrino-nucleus cross sections. They agree at the percent level, showing the reliability of the numerical techniques adopted and providing benchmark RPWIA results.

Extracting the Weinberg angle at intermediate energies

A recent experiment by the NuTeV collaboration resulted in a surprisingly high value for the weak mixing angle $\sin^2 θ_W$. The Paschos-Wolfenstein relation, relating neutrino cross sections to the Weinberg angle, is of pivotal importance in the NuTeV analysis. In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation to nuclear structure aspects at neutrino energies in the few GeV range. Neutrino-nucleus cross sections are calculated for $^{16}$O and $^{56}$Fe target nuclei within a relativistic quasi-elastic nucleon-knockout model.

Relativistic effects in neutrino-Fermi gas interactions

We study neutrino interactions in a hadron gas within a relativistic framework. The hadron matter is described by a non-interacting Fermi gas in beta equilibrium. We show that the introduction of relativistic effects causes a sizable enhancement of the neutrino-scattering cross sections.

Helicity asymmetries in neutrino-nucleus interactions

We investigate the helicity properties of the ejectile in quasi-elastic neutrino-induced nucleon-knockout reactions and consider the 12C target as a test case. A formalism based on a relativistic mean-field model is adopted. The influence of final-state interactions is evaluated within a relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA) model. Our calculations reveal that the helicity asymmetries A_l in A(\overlineν,\overlineν'N) processes are extremely sensitive to strange-quark contributions to the weak vector form-factors. Thereby, nuclear corrections, such as final-state interactions and off-shell ambiguities in the electroweak current operators, are observed to be of marginal importance. This facilitates extracting strange-quark information from the helicity asymmetry A_l.

A relativistic Glauber approach to polarization transfer in 4He(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})

Polarization-transfer components for 4He(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})3H are computed within the relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA). The RMSGA framework adopts relativistic single-particle wave functions and electron-nucleon couplings. The predictions with free and various parametrizations for the medium-modified electromagnetic form factors are compared to the world data.

Spin-dependent neutrino-induced nucleon knockout

We study neutrino-induced nucleon knockout off atomic nuclei and examine the polarization properties of the ejectile. A detailed study of the spin dependence of the outgoing nucleon is presented. The numerical results are derived within a non-relativistic plane-wave impulse-approximation approach. Our calculations reveal large polarization asymmetries, and clear dissimilarities between neutrino- and antineutrino-induced reactions. They reflect the fact that neutrino-induced nucleon knockout is dominated by the transverse axial current and gains its major contributions from forward nucleon emission and backward lepton scattering.

Polarization transfer in 4He(\vec{e},e'\vec{p}) and 16O(\vec{e},e'\vec{p}) in a relativistic Glauber model

Polarization-transfer components for 4He(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})3H and 16O(\vec{e},e'\vec{p})15N are computed within the relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA). The RMSGA framework adopts relativistic single-particle wave functions and electron-nucleon couplings. The predictions closely match those of a relativistic plane-wave model indicating the smallness of the final-state interactions for polarization-transfer components. Also short-range correlations play a modest role for the studied observables, as long as small proton missing-momenta are probed in quasi-elastic kinematics. The predictions with free and various parameterizations for the medium-modified electromagnetic form factors are compared to the world data.

Electromagnetic form factors of hyperons in a relativistic quark model

The relativistically covariant constituent quark model developed by the Bonn group is used to compute the EM form factors of strange baryons. We present form-factor results for the ground-state and some excited hyperons. The computed magnetic moments agree well with the experimental values and the magnetic form factors follow a dipole $Q^2$ dependence.

Identifying neutrinos and antineutrinos in neutral-current scattering reactions

We study neutrino-induced nucleon knockout from nuclei. Expressions for the induced polarization are derived within the framework of the independent-nucleon model and the non-relativistic plane-wave approximation. Large dissimilarities in the nucleon polarization asymmetries are observed between neutrino- and antineutrino-induced processes. These asymmetries represent a potential way to distinguish between neutrinos and antineutrinos in neutral-current neutrino-scattering on nuclei. We discuss astrophysical applications of these polarization asymmetries. Our findings are illustrated for neutrino scattering on $^{16}$O and $^{208}$Pb.

A Genetic Algorithm Analysis of N* Resonances in $p(γ,K^{+})Λ$ Reactions

The problem of extracting information on new and known $N^{*}$ resonances by fitting isobar models to photonuclear data is addressed. A new fitting strategy, incorporating a genetic algorithm, is outlined. As an example, the method is applied to a typical tree-level analysis of published $p(γ,K^{+})Λ$ data. It is shown that, within the limitations of this tree-level analysis, a resonance in addition to the known set is required to obtain a reasonable fit. An additional $P_{11}$ resonance, with a mass of about 1.9 GeV, gives the best agreement with the published data, but additional $S_{11}$ or $D_{13}$ resonances cannot be ruled out. Our genetic algorithm method predicts that photon beam asymmetry and double polarization $p(γ,K^{+})Λ$ measurements should provide the most sensitive information with respect to missing resonances.

Probing nucleon-nucleon correlations with (e,e'p) and (e,e'pp) reactions

Some of the recent attempts to detect signals of nucleon-nucleon correlations with semi-exclusive A(e,e'p) and exclusive A(e,e'pN) processes are reviewed. Unfactorized and distorted-wave calculations for these processes are discussed. The calculations implement two-body currents stemming from pion-exchange and intermediate $Δ$ excitation. The two-body currents are shown to be highly competitive with the mechanisms related to nucleon-nucleon correlations. This observation seriously hampers attempts to link semi-exclusive A(e,e'p) measurements, which probe high missing energies, to the correlated part of the nuclear spectral function. Signals of central short-range correlations (SRC) have been detected in (e,e'pp) measurements on ^{12}C and ^{16}O, thereby confirming the picture that in hadronic matter SRC solely affect nucleon pairs with a small center-of-mass momentum and residing in a relative S state.

Nuclear transparencies in relativistic A(e,e'p) models

Relativistic and unfactorized calculations for the nuclear transparency extracted from exclusive A(e,e'p) reactions for 0.3 \leq Q^2 \leq 10 (GeV/c)^2 are presented for the target nuclei C, Si, Fe and Pb. For Q^2 \geq 0.6 (GeV/c)^2, the transparency results are computed within the framework of the recently developed relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA). The target-mass and Q^2 dependence of the RMSGA predictions are compared with relativistic distorted-wave impulse approximation (RDWIA) calculations. Despite the very different model assumptions underlying the treatment of the final-state interactions in the RMSGA and RDWIA frameworks, they predict comparable nuclear transparencies for kinematic regimes where both models are applicable.

The 16O(e,e'pp)14C reaction to discrete final states

Differential cross sections for exclusive 16O(e,e'pp)14C processes are computed within a distorted-wave framework which includes central short-range correlations and intermediate Δ+ excitations. The cross sections are compared to high-resolution data from the MAMI facility at Mainz for a central energy and momentum transfer of ω=215 MeV and q=316 MeV respectively. A fair agreement between the numerical calculations and data is reached when using spectroscopic information extracted from a 15N(d,3He)14C experiment. The comparison between the calculations and the data provides additional evidence that short-range correlations exclusively affect nucleon pairs with a small center-of-mass momentum residing in a relative S state.

Electric and magnetic form factors of strange baryons

Predictions for the electromagnetic form factors of the Lambda$, Sigma and Xi hyperons are presented. The numerical calculations are performed within the framework of the fully relativistic constituent-quark model developed by the Bonn group. The computed magnetic moments compare favorably with the experimentally known values. Most magnetic form factors G_M(Q^2) can be parametrized in terms of a dipole with cutoff masses ranging from 0.79 to 1.14 GeV.

Relativistic formulation of Glauber theory for A(e,e'p) reactions

At sufficiently large proton energies, Glauber multiple-scattering theory offers good opportunities for describing the final state interactions in electro-induced proton emission off nuclear targets. A fully unfactorized relativistic formulation of Glauber multiple-scattering theory is presented. The effect of truncating the Glauber multiple-scattering series is discussed. Relativistic effects in the description of the final-state interactions are found not to exceed the few percent level. Also the frequently adopted approximation of replacing the wave functions for the individual scattering nucleons by some average density, is observed to have a minor impact on the results. Predictions for the separated $^4$He$(e,e'p)$ response functions are given in quasi-elastic kinematics and a domain corresponding with $1 \leq Q^2 \leq 2$ (GeV)$^2$.

Constraints on background contributions from K+ Lambda electroproduction

Results for response functions for kaon electroproduction on the proton are presented. A tree-level hadrodynamical model is adopted and it is shown that some of the electroproduction response functions are particularly powerful with the eye on gaining control over the parameterization of the background diagrams. The existing data set for the p(e,e'K+)Lambda reaction appears to rule out the use of a g_{K+ Lambda p} coupling constant beyond the boundaries of softly broken SU(3) flavor symmetry. Also the use of soft hadronic form factors, which has been proposed as a valid alternative for a hadrodynamical description of the p(gamma,K+)Lambda data in the resonance region, seems to be disfavored by the magnitude of the measured p(e,e'K+)Lambda cross sections.

Extraction of N* information from the limited p(gamma,K+)Lambda data set

Nucleon resonance information is often obtained from fitting hadrodynamical model calculations to data, where model parameters such as resonance coupling constants are the free parameters in the fitting procedure. For reactions with a limited data set, such as p(gamma, K+)Lambda, complications in the extraction of reliable N* information occur not only through theoretical uncertainties, but also due to technical difficulties in the fitting procedure. In this article we outline a fitting strategy based on a genetic algorithm and illustrate the kind of ambiguities which can arise.

Sigma photoproduction in the resonance region

A study of p(gamma,K)Sigma processes in an isobar model at tree level is reported. By comparing model calculations to the published SAPHIR data, we explore the possible role of different isospin I=1/2 (N*) and I=3/2 (Delta*) resonances in the reaction dynamics. In our analysis, the inclusion of the ``missing'' D_{13}(1895) resonance does only slightly improve the global description of the Sigma photoproduction data. More convincing signals for the presence of such a ``missing'' resonance emerged in the analysis of the isospin related p(gamma,K+)Lambda reaction. Various implementations of the nonresonant part of the Sigma photoproduction amplitude are presented. The sensitivity of the computed observables and extracted resonance parameters to the uncertainties inherent to the treatment of the nonresonant (background) diagrams are discussed.
