Semiconductive and Photoconductive Properties of the Single Molecule Magnets Mn12-Acetate and Fe8Br8

Resistivity measurements are reported for single crystals of Mn12-Acetate and Fe8Br8. Both materials exhibit a semiconductor-like, thermally activated behavior over the 200-300 K range. The activation energy, Ea, obtained for Mn12-Acetate was 0.37 +/- 0.05 eV, which is to be contrasted with the value of 0.55 eV deduced from the earlier reported absorption edge measurements and the range of 0.3-1 eV from intramolecular density of states calculations, assuming 2Ea = Eg, the optical band gap. For Fe8Br8, Ea was measured as 0.73 +/- 0.1 eV, and is discussed in light of the available approximate band structure calculations. Some plausible pathways are indicated based on the crystal structures of both lattices. For Mn12-Acetate, we also measured photoconductivity in the visible range; the conductivity increased by a factor of about eight on increasing the photon energy from 632.8 nm (red) to 488 nm (blue). X-ray irradiation increased the resistivity, but Ea was insensitive to exposure.

Semiconductive and Photoconductive Properties of the Single Molecule Magnets Mn$_{12}$-Acetate and Fe$_8$Br$_8$

Resistivity measurements are reported for single crystals of Mn$_{12}$-Acetate and Fe$_8$Br$_8$. Both materials exhibit a semiconductor-like, thermally activated behavior over the 200-300 K range. The activation energy, $E_a$, obtained for Mn$_{12}$-Acetate was 0.37 $\pm$ 0.05 eV, which is to be contrasted with the value of 0.55 eV deduced from the earlier reported absorption edge measurements and the range of 0.3-1 eV from intramolecular density of states calculations, assuming $2E_a$= $E_g$, the optical band gap. For Fe$_8$Br$_8$, $E_a$ was measured as 0.73 $\pm$ 0.1 eV, and is discussed in light of the available approximate band structure calculations. Some plausible pathways are indicated based on the crystal structures of both lattices. For Mn$_{12}$-Acetate, we also measured photoconductivity in the visible range; the conductivity increased by a factor of about eight on increasing the photon energy from 632.8 nm (red) to 488 nm (blue). X-ray irradiation increased the resistivity, but $E_a$ was insensitive to exposure.

High magnetic field-induced insulating phase in an organic conductor

We report electrical transport, skin depth, and magnetocaloric measurements in the tau-series of organic conductors at very high magnetic fields. Above 36 T these materials show a magnetic field induced first order phase transition from a metallic to an insulating state. The transition, which is a bulk thermodynamic phenomenon, does not follow the conventional prescription for field induced phase transitions in organic conductors.

Fermiology and superconductivity studies on the non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene structured organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6

The quantum oscillatory effect and superconductivity in a non-tetrachalcogenafulvalene (TCF) structure based organic superconductor beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 are studied. Here the Shubnikov-de Haas effect (SdH) and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) are observed. The oscillation frequency associated with a cylindrical Fermi surface is found to be about 4050 tesla, which is also verified by the tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) measurement. The upper critical field Hc2 measurement in a tilted magnetic field and the TDO measurement in the mixed state reveal a highly anisotropic superconducting nature in this material. We compared physical properties of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 with typical TCF structure based quasi two-dimensional organic conductors. A notable feature of beta-(BDA-TTP)_2SbF_6 superconductor is a large value of effective cyclotron mass m_c^*=12.4+/1.1 m_e, which is the largest yet found in an organic superconductor. A possible origin of the enhanced effective mass and its relation to the superconductivity are briefly discussed.

Disorder-driven magnetic field-dependent phases in an organic conductor

We report inter-plane ($R_{zz}$) electrical transport measurements in the \tp series of organic conductors at very high magnetic fields. In the field range between 36 and 60 T $R_{zz}$ shows a very hysteretic first order phase transition from metallic to an insulating state. This transition does not affect the Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations associated with the two-dimensional (2D) Fermi surface. We argue that this transition originates from inter-plane disorder which gives rise to incoherent transport along the least conducting axis. We conclude that this system becomes a strictly 2D Fermi-liquid at high magnetic fields.

Coherent vs incoherent interlayer transport in layered metals

The magnetic-field, temperature, and angular dependence of the interlayer magnetoresistance of two different quasi-two-dimensional (2D) organic superconductors is reported. For $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ we find a well-resolved peak in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance at $Θ= 90^\circ$ (field parallel to the layers). This clear-cut proof for the coherent nature of the interlayer transport is absent for $β$''-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$. This and the non-metallic behavior of the magnetoresistance suggest an incoherent quasiparticle motion for the latter 2D metal.

Photo-response of the conductivity in functionalized pentacene compounds

We report the first investigation of the photo-response of the conductivity of a new class of organic semiconductors based on functionalized pentacene. These materials form high quality single crystals that exhibit a thermally activated resistivity. Unlike pure pentacene, the functionalized derivatives are readily soluble in acetone, and can be evaporated or spin-cast as thin films for potential device applications. The electrical conductivity of the single crystal materials is noticeably sensitive to ambient light changes. The purpose, therefore, of the present study, is to determine the nature of the photo-response in terms of carrier activation vs. heating effects, and also to measure the dependence of the photo-response on photon energy. We describe a new method, involving the temperature dependent photo-response, which allows an unambiguous identification of the signature of heating effects in materials with a thermally activated conductivity. We find strong evidence that the photo-response in the materials investigated is predominantly a highly localized heating mechanism. Wavelength dependent studies of the photo-response reveal resonant features and cut-offs that indicate the photon energy absorption is related to the electronic structure of the material.

Novel Features of the Newly Discovered Field-Induced Superconducting Phase of lambda-BETS2FeCl4

We examine magnetic field dependent properties associated with the newly discovered field-induced superconducting state (FISC) in lambda-BETS2FeCl4. These include the metal-to-antiferromagnetic insulator transition, the critical field of the FISC state in tilted magnetic fields, and the low-pressure, magnetic field dependence of the insulating and superconducting phases.

Unexpected Metallic-like Behavior of the Resistance in the Dielectric Spin Density Wave State in (TMTSF)2PF6

We report unexpected features of the transport in the dielectric spin density wave (SDW) phase of the quasi one-dimensional compound (TMTSF)_2PF_6: the resistance exhibits a maximum and a subsequent strong drop as temperature decreases below approximately 2K. The maximum in R(T) is not caused by depinning or Joule heating of the SDW. The characteristic temperature of the R(T) maximum and the scaling behavior of the resistance at different magnetic fields B evidence that the non-monotonic R(T) dependence has an origin different from the one known for the quantum Hall effect region of the phase diagram. We also found that the borderline T_0(B,P) which divides the field induced SDW region of the P-B-T phase diagram into the hysteresis and non-hysteresis domains, terminates in the N=1 sub-phase; the borderline has thus no extension to the SDW N=0 phase.

Magnetothemopower study of quasi two-dimensional organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$

We have used a low-frequency magneto-thermopower (MTEP) method to probe the high magnetic field ground state behavior of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ along all three principal crystallographic axes at low temperatures. The thermopower tensor coefficients ($S_{xx}, S_{yx}$ and $S_{zz}$) have been measured to 30 T, beyond the anomalous low temperature, field-induced transition at 22.5 T. We find a significant anisotropy in the MTEP signal, and also observe large quantum oscillations associated with the de Haas - van Alphen effect. The anisotropy indicates that the ground state properties are clearly driven by mechanisms that occur along specific directions for the in-plane electronic structure. Both transverse and longitudinal magnetothermopower show asymptotic behavior in field, which can be explained in terms of magnetic breakdown of compensated closed orbits.

Superconductivity in an organic insulator at very high magnetic fields

We investigate by electrical transport the field-induced superconducting state (FISC) in the organic conductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$. Below 4 K, antiferromagnetic-insulator, metallic, and eventually superconducting (FISC) ground states are observed with increasing in-plane magnetic field. The FISC state survives between 18 and 41 T, and can be interpreted in terms of the Jaccarino-Peter effect, where the external magnetic field {\em compensates} the exchange field of aligned Fe$^{3+}$ ions. We further argue that the Fe$^{3+}$ moments are essential to stabilize the resulting singlet, two-dimensional superconducting state

Novel Phases in the Field Induced Spin Density Wave State in (TMTSF)_2PF_6

Magnetoresistance measurements on the quasi one-dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6 performed in magnetic fields B up to 16T, temperatures T down to 0.12K and under pressures P up to 14kbar have revealed new phases on its P-B-T phase diagram. We found a new boundary which subdivides the field induced spin density wave (FISDW) phase diagram into two regions. We showed that a low-temperature region of the FISDW diagram is characterized by a hysteresis behavior typical for the first order transitions, as observed in a number of studies. In contrast to the common believe, in high temperature region of the FISDW phase diagram, the hysteresis and, hence, the first order transitions were found to disappear. Nevertheless, sharp changes in the resistivity slope are observed both in the low and high temperature domains indicating that the cascade of transitions between different subphases exists over all range of the FISDW state. We also found that the temperature dependence of the resistance (at a constant B) changes sign at about the same boundary. We compare these results with recent theoretical models.

Quantum melting of the quasi-two-dimensional vortex lattice in kappa-(ET)2Cu(NCS)2

We report torque magnetization measurements in regions of the mixed state phase diagram (${\bf B}\simμ_o{\bf H}_{c2}$ and T$_c$/$10^3$) of the organic superconductor $κ-$(ET)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ where quantum fluctuations are expected to dominate thermal effects. Over most of the field range below the irreversibility line (${\bf B}_{irr}$), magneto-thermal instabilities are observed in the form of flux jumps. The abrupt cessation of these instabilities just below ${\bf B}_{irr}$ indicates a quantum melting transition from a quasi-two-dimensional vortex lattice phase to a quantum liquid phase.

Electronic Structure of Novel Cation-Radical Salts in High Magnetic Fields

Two organic conducting materials, where unusual aspects of their composition play important roles, are explored: beta''-(BEDT-TTF)2SF5XSO3 which exhibits superconductivity, or a metal-insulator transition (for X=CH2CF2 or CHF respectively), and tau-(P-S, S -DMEDT-TTF)2 (AuBr2) (AuBr2)y which exhibits a large, hysteretic, negative magnetoresistance. Detailed angular dependent magnetoresistance studies that allow a tomographic view of the electronic structure of these materials with increasing magnetic fields are presented.

Magnetic field-dependent interplay between incoherent and Fermi liquid transport mechanisms in low-dimensional tau phase organic conductors

We present an electrical transport study of the 2-dimensional (2D) organic conductor tau-(P-(S,S)-DMEDT-TTF)_2(AuBr)_2(AuBr_2)_y (y = 0.75) at low temperatures and high magnetic fields. The inter-plane resistivity rho_zz increases with decreasing temperature, with the exception of a slight anomaly at 12 K. Under a magnetic field B, both rho_zz and the in-plane resistivity plane rho_xx show a pronounced negative and hysteretic magnetoresistance with Shubnikov de Haas (SdH)oscillations being observed in some (high quality)samples above 15 T. Contrary to the predicted single, star-shaped, closed orbit Fermi surface from band structure calculations (with an expected approximate area of 12.5% of A_FBZ), two fundamental frequencies F_l and F_h are detected in the SdH signal. These orbits correspond to 2.4% and 6.8% of the area of the first Brillouin zone(A_FBZ), with effective masses F_l = 4.0 +/- 0.5 and F_h = 7.3 +/- 0.1. The angular dependence, in tilted magnetic fields of F_l and F_h, reveals the 2D character of the FS and Angular dependent magnetoresistance (AMRO) further suggests a FS which is strictly 2-D where the inter-plane hopping t_c is virtually absent or incoherent. The Hall constant R_xy is field independent, and the Hall mobility increases by a factor of 3 under moderate magnetic fields. Our observations suggest a unique physical situation where a stable 2D Fermi liquid state in the molecular layers are incoherently coupled along the least conducting direction. The magnetic field not only reduces the inelastic scattering between the 2D metallic layers, but it also reveals the incoherent nature of interplane transport in the AMRO spectrum. The apparent ferromagnetism of the hysteretic magnetoresistance remains an unsolved problem.

On the absence of spin-splitting in alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4

We report the results of a detailed study of the field orientation-dependence of the de Haas-van Alphen waveform in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$. By considering the field orientation-dependence of the sign and phase of the fundamental $α$ frequency, at fields both well above and below the kink transition field, it is found that a single value for the product of the effective mass with the electron {\it g}-factor can explain the experimental data deep within both the high magnetic field and low magnetic field phases. This implies that spin-splitting does not occur within the low magnetic field phase until the angle between the magnetic field and the normal to the conducting planes is $\sim$~42$^\circ$. This finding contrasts greatly with that recently published by Sasaki and Fukase, implying that electron-electron interactions do not play a significant role in the formation of the charge-density wave ground state. The manner in which the amplitude of the waveform of the oscillations is damped within the low magnetic field phase is indicative of a non harmonically indexed reduction of the amplitude, thereby eliminating both magnetic breakdown and impurity scattering as dominant damping mechanisms within this phase. Meanwhile, the presence of a large amplitude second harmonic within the low magnetic field phase that has a negative sign over a broad range of angles can only be explained by the frequency doubling effect.

Field-induced metal-insulator transition in a two-dimensional organic superconductor

The quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor beta-(BEDT-TTF)_2SF_5CH_2CF_2SO_3 (T_c approx 4.4 K)shows very strong Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations which are superimposed on a highly anomalous steady background magnetoresistance, R_b. Comparison with de Haas- van Alphen oscillations allow a reliable estimate of R_b which is crucial for the correct extraction of the SdH signal. At low temperatures and high magnetic fields insulating behavior evolves. The magnetoresistance data violate Kohler's rule, i.e., cannot be described within the framework of semiclassical transport theory, but converge onto a universal curve appropriate for dynamical scaling at a metal-insulator transition.

Magneto-thermal instabilities in kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2

Angle and temperature dependent torque magnetization measurements are reported for the organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2, at extremely low temperatures (approx. Tc/10^3). Magneto-thermal instabilities are observed in the form of abrupt magnetization (flux) jumps. We carry out an analysis of the temperature and field orientation dependence of these flux jumps based on accepted models for layered type-II superconductors. Using a simple Bean model, we also find a critical current density of 4x10^8 A/m^2 from the remnant magnetization, in agreement with previous measurements.
