Low-frequency method for magnetothermopower and Nernst effect measurements on single crystal samples at low temperatures and high magnetic fields

We describe an AC method for the measurement of the longitudinal (Sxx) and transverse (Sxy, i.e. Nernst) thermopower of mm-size single crystal samples at low temperatures (T<1 K) and high magnetic fields (B>30 T). A low-frequency (33 mHz) heating method is used to increase the resolution, and to determine the temperature gradient reliably in high magnetic fields. Samples are mounted between two thermal blocks which are heated by a sinusoidal frequency f0 with a p/2 phase difference. The phase difference between two heater currents gives a temperature gradient at 2f0. The corresponding thermopower and Nernst effect signals are extracted by using a digital signal processing method due. An important component of the method involves a superconducting link, YBa2Cu3O7+d (YBCO), which is mounted in parallel with sample to remove the background magnetothermopower of the lead wires. The method is demonstrated for the quasi two-dimensional organic conductor a-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4, which exhibits a complex, magnetic field dependent ground state above 22.5 T at low temperatures.

Transverse and in-plane modification of superconductivity and electronic structure in the quasi-two dimensional organic conductor $κ$--(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(SCN)$_{2}$ by uniaxial stress

We have employed uniaxial stress along the principal axes of the quasi-two dimensional organic superconductor $κ$--(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(SCN)$_{2}$. The lattice anisotropy is thereby altered, with corresponding changes in the intermolecular transfer energies. The effect of uniaxial stress on the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ and critical field $B_{c2}$ is found to be anisotropic. There is an indication of an increase in $T_{c}$ and $B_{c2}$ for in-plane stress, but both parameters decrease rapidly for transverse (inter-plane) stress. Magnetotransport studies reveal stress-induced changes in the Fermi surface through the observation of the Shubnikov de Haas oscillations. The stress dependence of a resistive anomaly in the magnetoresistance, which is associated with the critical field $B_{c2}$, is also investigated. We discuss the experimental findings in the context of recent phenomenological and theoretical treatments of quasi-two dimensional systems where the anisotropic triangular lattice Hubbard model has been used to treat two-dimensional superconductors.

Shubnikov-de Haas effect and Yamaji oscillations in the antiferromagnetically ordered organic superconductor k-(BETS)2FeBr4: A Fermiology study

Shubnikov-De Haas effect (SdH) effect and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) were observed in the organic superconductor: $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$. In contrast to its isostructural compound $κ-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$, SdH oscillations, for fields perpendicular to the conducting planes, reveal three Fermi Surface (FS) closed orbits $α$, $β$, and $γ$ whose cross sectional areas are 19.8 %, 99.9 %, and 2.4 % of the first Brillouin zone, respectively. The conduction electron effective masses were found to be: $μ_α = (4.7 \pm 0.2)$ m$_e$, $μ_β = (8.0 \pm 1.0)$ m$_e$, and $μ_γ = (2.0 \pm 0.2)$ m$_e$. The observation of a $γ$ orbit is not expected from band structure calculations, $μ_β$ is among the heaviest masses ever reported for an organic conductor. The observed Yamaji-like AMRO indicates a 2-D closed FS, warped along the $k_z$ direction.

Josephson plasma resonance in k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2

A cavity perturbation technique is used to study the microwave response of the organic superconductor k-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2. Observation of a Josephson plasma resonance, below Tc (approx. 10 K), enables investigation of the vortex structure within the mixed state of this highly anisotropic, type-II, superconductor. Contrary to previous assumptions, frequency dependent studies (28 - 153 GHz) indicate that the squared plasma frequency depends exponentially on the magnetic field strength. Such behavior has been predicted for a weakly pinned quasi-two-dimensional vortex lattice [Bulaevskii et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 801 (1995)], but has not so far been observed experimentally. Our data also suggests a transition in the vortex structure near the irreversibility line not previously reported for an organic superconductor using this technique.

The High Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of a Quasi-One Dimensional Metal

We present a unique high magnetic field phase of the quasi-one dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. This phase, termed "Q-ClO$_4$", is obtained by rapid thermal quenching to avoid ordering of the ClO$_4$ anion. The magnetic field dependent phase of Q-ClO$_4$ is distinctly different from that in the extensively studied annealed material. Q-ClO$_4$ exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) transition at $\approx$ 5 K which is strongly magnetic field dependent. This dependence is well described by the theoretical treatment of Bjelis and Maki. We show that Q-ClO$_4$ provides a new B-T phase diagram in the hierarchy of low-dimensional organic metals (one-dimensional towards two-dimensional), and describe the temperature dependence of the of the quantum oscillations observed in the SDW phase.

Temperature and Angular Dependence of the Magnetoresistance in Low Dimensional Organic Metals

Detailed studies of the magnetoresistance of alpha-(ET)2KHg(SCN)4 and alpha-(ET)2TlHg(SCN)4 as a function of temperature, magnetic field strength, and field orientation are reported. Below 15 K, the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance is metallic (dR/dT > 0) for magnetic field orientation corresponding to an angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillation (AMRO) minimum and nonmetallic (dR/dT < 0) at all other field orientations. We find that this behavior can be explained in terms of semiclassical models without the use of a non-Fermi liquid description. The alternating temperature dependence (metallic/nonmetallic)with respect to field orientation is common to any system with either quasi-one or two-dimensional AMRO. Furthermore, we report a new metallic property of the high field and low temperature regime of alpha-(ET)2MHg(SCN)4 (where M = K, Rb, or Tl) compounds.

Competition between Pauli and orbital effects in a charge-density wave system

We present angular dependent magneto-transport and magnetization measurements on alpha-(ET)2MHg(SCN)4 compounds at high magnetic fields and low temperatures. We find that the low temperature ground state undergoes two subsequent field-induced density-wave type phase transitions above a critical angle of the magnetic field with respect to the crystallographic axes. This new phase diagram may be qualitatively described assuming a charge density wave ground state which undergoes field-induced transitions due to the interplay of Pauli and orbital effects.

Critical State Behaviour in a Low Dimensional Metal Induced by Strong Magnetic Fields

We present the results of magnetotransport and magnetic torque measurements on the alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 charge-transfer salt within the high magnetic field phase, in magnetic fields extending to 33 T and temperatures as low as 27 mK. While the high magnetic field phase (at fields greater than ~ 23 T) is expected, on theoretical grounds, to be either a modulated charge-density wave phase or a charge/spin-density wave hybrid, the resistivity undergoes a dramatic drop below ~ 3 K within the high magnetic field phase, falling in an approximately exponential fashion at low temperatures, while the magnetic torque exhibits pronounced hysteresis effects. This hysteresis, which occurs over a broad range of fields, is both strongly temperature-dependent and has several of the behavioural characteristics predicted by critical-state models used to describe the pinning of vortices in type II superconductors in strong magnetic fields. Thus, rather than exhibiting the usual behaviour expected for a density wave ground state, both the transport and the magnetic properties of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4, at high magnetic fields, closely resembles those of a type II superconductor.

Cyclotron Resonance in the Layered Perovskite Superconductor Sr2RuO4

We have measured the cyclotron masses in Sr2RuO4 through the observation of periodic-orbit-resonances - a magnetic resonance technique closely related to cyclotron resonance. We obtain values for the alpha, beta and gamma Fermi surfaces of (4.33+/-0.05)me, (5.81+/-0.03)me and (9.71+/-0.11)me respectively. The appreciable differences between these results and those obtained from de Haas- van Alphen measurements are attributable to strong electron-electron interactions in this system. Our findings appear to be consistent with predictions for a strongly interacting Fermi liquid; indeed, semi-quantitative agreement is obtained for the electron pockets beta and gamma.

Paramagnetic limiting of the upper critical field of the layered organic superconductor $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(SCN)_2$

We report detailed measurements of the interlayer magnetoresistance of the layered organic superconductor $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2Cu(SCN)_2$ for temperatures down to 0.5 K and fields up to 30 tesla. The upper critical field is determined from the resistive transition for a wide range of temperatures and field directions. For magnetic fields parallel to the layers, the upper critical field increases approximately linearly with decreasing temperature. The upper critical field at low temperatures is compared to the Pauli paramagnetic limit, at which singlet superconductivity should be destroyed by the Zeeman splitting of the electron spins. The measured value is comparable to a value for the paramagnetic limit calculated from thermodynamic quantities but exceeds the limit calculated from BCS theory. The angular dependence of the upper critical field shows a cusp-like feature for fields close to the layers, consistent with decoupled layers.

Experimental determination of B-T phase diagram of YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d to 150T for B perpendicular to c

The B-T phase diagram for thin film YBa_2Cu_3O_7-d with B parallel to the superconducting layers has been constructed from GHz transport measurements to 150T. Evidence for a transition from a high T regime dominated by orbital effects, to a low T regime where paramagnetic limiting drives the quenching of superconductivity, is seen. Up to 110T the upper critical field is found to be linear in T and in remarkable agreement with extrapolation of the longstanding result of Welp et al arising from magnetisation measurements to 6T. Beyond this a departure from linear behaviour occurs at T=74K, where a 3D-2D crossover is expected to occur.

Violation of Kohler's rule by the magnetoresistance of a quasi-two-dimensional organic metal

The interlayer magnetoresistance of the quasi-two-dimensional metal $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$KHg(SCN)$_4$ is considered. In the temperature range from 0.5 to 10 K and for fields up to 10 tesla the magnetoresistance has a stronger temperature dependence than the zero-field resistance. Consequently Kohler's rule is not obeyed for any range of temperatures or fields. This means that the magnetoresistance cannot be described in terms of semiclassical transport on a single Fermi surface with a single scattering time. Possible explanations for the violations of Kohler's rule are considered, both within the framework of semi-classical transport theory and involving incoherent interlayer transport. The issues considered are similar to those raised by the magnetotransport of the cuprate superconductors.

Magnetoresistance and magnetic breakdown in the quasi-two-dimensional conductors (BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$[M=K,Rb,Tl]

The magnetic field dependence of the resistance of (BEDT-TTF)$_2$MHg(SCN)$_4$[M=K,Rb,Tl] in the density-wave phase is explained in terms of a simple model involving magnetic breakdown and a reconstructed Fermi surface. The theory is compared to measurements in pulsed magnetic fields up to 51 T. The value implied for the scattering time is consistent with independent determinations. The energy gap associated with the density-wave phase is deduced from the magnetic breakdown field. Our results have important implications for the phase diagram.

Quantum Hall Transitions in (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$

We have studied the temperature dependence of the integer quantum Hall transitions in the molecular crystal (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$. We find that the transition width between the quantum Hall plateaus does not exhibit the universal power-law scaling behavior of the integer quantum Hall effect observed in semiconducting devices. Instead, the slope of the $ρ_{xy}$ risers, $dρ_{xy}/dB$, and the (inverse) width of the $ρ_{xx}$ peaks, $(ΔB)^{-1}$, show a BCS-like energy gap temperature dependence. We discuss these results in terms of the field-induced spin-density wave gap and order parameter of the system.
