Intense source of cold cesium atoms based on a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap with independent axial cooling and pushing

We report our studies on an intense source of cold cesium atoms based on a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap with independent axial cooling and pushing. The new-designed source, proposed as 2D-HP MOT, uses hollow laser beams for axial cooling and a thin pushing laser beam for cold atomic beam extraction. Regulated independently by the pushing beam, the atomic flux can be substantially optimized. The atomic flux maximum obtained in the 2D-HP MOT is $4.02\times 10^{10}$ atoms/s, increased by 60 percent compared to the traditional 2D$^+$ MOT in our experiment. Moreover, with the pushing power 10 $μ$W and detuning $0Γ$, the 2D-HP MOT can generate a rather intense cold cesium atomic beam with the concomitant light shift suppressed by 20 times in magnitude. The axial velocity distribution of the cold cesium beams centers at 6.8 m/s with a FMHW of about 2.8 m/s. The dependences of the atomic flux on the pushing power and detuning are studied. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model.

Temperature and number evolution of cold cesium atoms inside a wall-coated glass cell

We report an experimental study on the temperature and number evolution of cold cesium atoms diffusively cooled inside a wall-coated glass cell by measuring the absorption profile of the 62S1/2 (F=4)-62P3/2 (F'=5) transition line with a weak probe laser in the evolution process. We found that the temperature of the cold atoms first gradually decreases from 16 mK to 9 mK, and then rapidly increases. The number of cold atoms first declines slowly from 2.1*10^9 to 3.7*10^8 and then falls drastically. A theoretical model for the number evolution is built and includes the instantaneous temperature of the cold atoms and a fraction p, which represents the part of cold cesium atoms elastically reflected by the coated cell wall. The theory is overall in good agreement with the experimental result and a nonzero value is obtained for the fraction p, which indicates that the cold cesium atoms are not all heated to the ambient temperature by a single collision with the coated cell wall. These results can provide helpful insight for precision measurements based on diffuse laser cooling.

Scaling of intrinsic Gilbert damping with spin-orbital coupling strength

We have experimentally and theoretically investigated the dependence of the intrinsic Gilbert damping parameter $α_0$ on the spin-orbital coupling strength $ξ$ by using L1$_{\mathrm{0}}$ ordered FePd$_{\mathrm{1-x}}$Pt$_{\mathrm{x}}$ ternary alloy films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. With the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect, $α_0$ is found to increase by more than a factor of ten when $x$ varies from 0 to 1.0. Since changes of other leading parameters are found to be neglected, the $α_0$ has for the first time been proven to be proportional to $ξ^2$.

Understanding BL Lac objects Structural & kinematic mode changes in the BL Lac object PKS 0735+178

Context. We present evidence that parsec-scale jets in BL Lac objects may be significantly distinct in kinematics from their counterparts in quasars. We argued this previously for the BL lac sources 1803+784 and 0716+714, report here a similar pattern for another well-known BL Lac object, PKS 0735+178, whose nuclear jet is found to exhibit kinematics atypical of quasars. Aims. A detailed study of the jet components' motion reveals that the standard AGN paradigm of apparent superluminal motion does not always describe the kinematics in BL Lac objects. We study 0735+178 here to augment and improve the understanding of the peculiar motions in the jets of BL Lac objects as a class. Methods. We analyzed 15 GHz VLBA (Very Long Baseline Array) observations (2cm/MOJAVE survey) performed at 23 epochs between 1995.27 and 2008.91. Results. We found a drastic structural mode change in the VLBI jet of 0735+178, between 2000.4 and 2001.8 when its twice sharply bent trajectory turned into a linear shape. We further found that this jet had undergone a similar transition sometime between December 1981 and June 1983. A mode change, occurring in the reverse direction (between mid-1992 and mid-1995) has already been reported in the literature. These structural mode changes are found to be reflected in changed kinematical behavior of the nuclear jet, manifested as an apparent superluminal motion and stationarity of the radio knots. In addition, we found the individual mode changes to correlate in time with the maxima in the optical light curve. The last two transitions occurred before a (modest) radio flare. The behavior of this pc-scale jet appears to favor a scenario involving non-ballistic motions of the radio knots, produced by the precession of a continuous jet within the ambient medium.

Effective nucleon mass in relativistic mean field theory

In the $σ$-$ω$-$ρ$ model of the relativistic mean field theory with nonlinear $σ$-meson self-interaction, the effective nucleon mass $M^*$ is discussed with relation to the symmetry incompressibility $K_s$ of nuclear matter, based on the model parameters fitted to nuclear matter properties. It is shown that $M^*$ is larger than $0.73M$, if $K_s$ is assumed to be negative and the nuclear matter incompressibility $K_0$ is kept less than $300 MeV$. Furthermore, the field system is shown to be stable, as the $σ$-meson self-interaction energy is lower bounded in this parameter region.

Nuclear matter properties and relativistic mean-field theory

Nuclear matter properties are calculated in the relativistic mean field theory by using a number of different parameter sets. The result shows that the volume energy $a_1$ and the symmetry energy $J$ are around the acceptable values 16MeV and 30MeV respectively; the incompressibility $K_0$ is unacceptably high in the linear model, but assumes reasonable value if nonlinear terms are included; the density symmetry $L$ is around $100MeV$ for most parameter sets, and the symmetry incompressibility $K_s$ has positive sign which is opposite to expectations based on the nonrelativistic model. In almost all parameter sets there exists a critical point $(ρ_c, δ_c)$, where the minimum and the maximum of the equation of state are coincident and the incompressibility equals zero, falling into ranges 0.014fm$^{-3}<ρ_c<0.039$fm$^{-3}$ and $0.74<δ_c\le0.95$; for a few parameter sets there is no critical point and the pure neutron matter is predicted to be bound. The maximum mass $M_{NS}$ of neutron stars is predicted in the range 2.45M$_\odot\leq M_{NS}\leq 3.26$M$_\odot$, the corresponding neutron star radius $R_{NS}$ is in the range 12.2km$\leq R_{NS}\leq 15.1$km.

Effective nucleon-nucleon interactions and nuclear matter equation of state

Nuclear matter equations of state based on Skyrme, Myers-Swiatecki and Tondeur interactions are written as polynomials of the cubic root of density, with coefficients that are functions of the relative neutron excess $δ$. In the extrapolation toward states far away from the standard one, it is shown that the asymmetry dependence of the critical point ($ρ_c, δ_c$) depends on the model used. However, when the equations of state are fitted to the same standard state, the value of $δ_c$ is almost the same in Skyrme and in Myers-Swiatecki interactions, while is much lower in Tondeur interaction. Furthermore, $δ_c$ does not depend sensitively on the choice of the parameter $γ$ in Skyrme interaction.

Nuclear matter properties in the relativistic mean field model with sigma-omega coupling

The possibility of extending the linear sigma-omega model by introducing a sigma-omega coupling phenomenologically is explored. It is shown that, in contrast to the usual Walecka model, not only the effective nucleon mass M* but also the effective sigma meson mass m*_sigma and the effective omega meson mass m*_omega are nucleon density dependent. When the model parameters are fitted to the nuclear saturation point (the nuclear radius constant r_0=1.14fm and volume energy a_1=16.0MeV) as well as to the effective nucleon mass M*=0.85M, the model yields m*_sigma=1.09m_sigma and m*_omega=0.90m_omega at the saturation point, and the nuclear incompressibility K_0=501MeV. The lowest value of K_0 given by this model by adjusting the model parameters is around 227MeV.
