GECAM detection of a bright type-I X-ray burst from 4U 0614+09: confirmation its spin frequency at 413 Hz

One month after launching Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), a bright thermonuclear X-ray burst from 4U~0614+09, was observed on January 24, 2021. We report the time-resolved spectroscopy of the burst and a burst oscillation detection at 413 Hz with a fractional amplitude 3.4\% (rms). This coincides with the burst oscillation previously discovered with \textit{Swift}/BAT \citep{Strohmayer2008}, and therefore confirms the spin frequency of this source. This burst is the brightest one in the normal bursts (except the superburst) ever detected from 4U~0614+09, which leads to an upper limit of distance estimation as 3.1 kpc. The folded light curve during the burst oscillation shows a multi-peak structure, which is the first case observed during a single burst oscillation in nonpulsating sources. The multi-peak profile could be due to additional harmonics of the burst oscillation, which is corresponding to several brighter/fainter spots at the stellar surface.

WALLABY Pilot Survey: HI gas disc truncation and star formation of galaxies falling into the Hydra I cluster

We present results from our analysis of the Hydra I cluster observed in neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) as part of the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). These WALLABY observations cover a 60-square-degree field of view with uniform sensitivity and a spatial resolution of 30 arcsec. We use these wide-field observations to investigate the effect of galaxy environment on HI gas removal and star formation quenching by comparing the properties of cluster, infall and field galaxies extending up to $\sim5R_{200}$ from the cluster centre. We find a sharp decrease in the HI-detected fraction of infalling galaxies at a projected distance of $\sim1.5R_{200}$ from the cluster centre from $\sim0.85\%$ to $\sim0.35\%$. We see evidence for the environment removing gas from the outskirts of HI-detected cluster and infall galaxies through the decrease in the HI to $r$-band optical disc diameter ratio. These galaxies lie on the star forming main sequence, indicating that gas removal is not yet affecting the inner star-forming discs and is limited to the galaxy outskirts. Although we do not detect galaxies undergoing galaxy-wide quenching, we do observe a reduction in recent star formation in the outer disc of cluster galaxies, which is likely due to the smaller gas reservoirs present beyond the optical radius in these galaxies. Stacking of HI non-detections with HI masses below $M_{\rm{HI}}\lesssim10^{8.4}\,\rm{M}_{\odot}$ will be required to probe the HI of galaxies undergoing quenching at distances $\gtrsim60$ Mpc with WALLABY.

A comparative analysis of pulse time-of-arrival creation methods

Extracting precise pulse times of arrival (TOAs) and their uncertainties is the first and most fundamental step in high-precision pulsar timing. In the classical method, TOAs are derived from total intensity pulse profiles of pulsars via cross-correlation with an idealised `1D' template of that profile. While a number of results have been presented in the literature relying on the ever increasing sensitivity of such pulsar timing experiments, there is no consensus on the most reliable methods for TOA creation and, more importantly, the associated TOA uncertainties for each scheme. In this article, we present a comprehensive comparison of TOA determination practices, focusing on the creation of timing templates, TOA determination methods and the most useful TOA bandwidth. The aim is both to present a possible approach towards TOA optimisation as well as the (partial) identification of an optimal TOA-creation scheme and the demonstration of optimisation differences between pulsars and data sets. We compare the values of data-derived template profiles as compared to analytic profiles and evaluate the three most commonly used template-matching methods. Finally, we study the relation between timing precision and TOA bandwidth to identify any potential breaks in that relationship. As a practical demonstration, we apply our selected methods to European Pulsar Timing Array data on the three test pulsars PSRs\ J0218+4232, J1713+0747 and J2145$-$0750.

An Overview on the Application of Graph Neural Networks in Wireless Networks

In recent years, with the rapid enhancement of computing power, deep learning methods have been widely applied in wireless networks and achieved impressive performance. To effectively exploit the information of graph-structured data as well as contextual information, graph neural networks (GNNs) have been introduced to address a series of optimization problems of wireless networks. In this overview, we first illustrate the construction method of wireless communication graph for various wireless networks and simply introduce the progress of several classical paradigms of GNNs. Then, several applications of GNNs in wireless networks such as resource allocation and several emerging fields, are discussed in detail. Finally, some research trends about the applications of GNNs in wireless communication systems are discussed.

Noise analysis in the European Pulsar Timing Array data release 2 and its implications on the gravitational-wave background search

The European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) collaboration has recently released an extended data set for six pulsars (DR2) and reported evidence for a common red noise signal. Here we present a noise analysis for each of the six pulsars. We consider several types of noise: (i) radio frequency independent, "achromatic", and time-correlated red noise; (ii) variations of dispersion measure and scattering; (iii) system and band noise; and (iv) deterministic signals (other than gravitational waves) that could be present in the PTA data. We perform Bayesian model selection to find the optimal combination of noise components for each pulsar. Using these custom models we revisit the presence of the common uncorrelated red noise signal previously reported in the EPTA DR2 and show that the data still supports it with a high statistical significance. Next, we confirm that there is no preference for or against the Hellings-Downs spatial correlations expected for the stochastic gravitational-wave background. The main conclusion of the EPTA DR2 paper remains unchanged despite a very significant change in the noise model of each pulsar. However, modelling the noise is essential for the robust detection of gravitational waves and its impact could be significant when analysing the next EPTA data release, which will include a larger number of pulsars and more precise measurements.

Non-equilibrium self-assembly of spin-wave solitons in FePt nanoparticles

Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L10-phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magneto-crystalline anisotropy. This in turn reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved X-ray diffraction and micromagnetic modeling that spin-wave solitons of sub-10 nm sizes form out of the demagnetized state following femtosecond laser excitation. The measured soliton spin-precession frequency of 0.1 THz positions this system as a platform to develop miniature devices capable of filling the THz gap.

Common-red-signal analysis with 24-yr high-precision timing of the European Pulsar Timing Array: Inferences in the stochastic gravitational-wave background search

We present results from the search for a stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) as predicted by the theory of General Relativity using six radio millisecond pulsars from the Data Release 2 (DR2) of the European Pulsar Timing Array (EPTA) covering a timespan up to 24 years. A GWB manifests itself as a long-term low-frequency stochastic signal common to all pulsars, a common red signal (CRS), with the characteristic Hellings-Downs (HD) spatial correlation. Our analysis is performed with two independent pipelines, \eprise{} and \tn{}+\ftwo{}, which produce consistent results. A search for a CRS with simultaneous estimation of its spatial correlations yields spectral properties compatible with theoretical GWB predictions, but does not result in the required measurement of the HD correlation, as required for GWB detection. Further Bayesian model comparison between different types of CRSs, including a GWB, finds the most favoured model to be the common uncorrelated red noise described by a power-law with $A = 5.13_{-2.73}^{+4.20} \times 10^{-15}$ and $γ= 3.78_{-0.59}^{+0.69}$ (95\% credible regions). Fixing the spectral index to $γ=13/3$ as expected from the GWB by circular, inspiralling supermassive black-hole binaries results in an amplitude of $A =2.95_{-0.72}^{+0.89} \times 10^{-15}$. We implement three different models, BAYESEPHEM, LINIMOSS and EPHEMGP, to address possible Solar-system ephemeris (SSE) systematics and conclude that our results may only marginally depend on these effects. This work builds on the methods and models from the studies on the EPTA DR1. We show that under the same analysis framework the results remain consistent after the data set extension.

B3\,0749+460A: A New "Changing-Look" Active Galactic Nucleus Associated with X-ray Spectral Slope Variations

Here we report an identification of B3\,0749+460A as a new double-peaked local "changing-look" active galactic nucleus (CL-AGN) in terms of our multi-epoch spectroscopic analysis. By comparing our new spectra taken in 2021 with the ones taken by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in 2004, BOSS in 2013, and MaNGA in 2016, we reveal type transitions of Seyfert (Sy) 1.9$\rightarrow$Sy1.8$\rightarrow$Sy1.9. In the transitions, the classical broad H$α$ emission fades away since 2013, and disappears in our 2021 spectrum, although the absence of broad H$β$ can be traced back to at least 2016. A follow-up observation in X-rays by the {\it Swift}/XRT reveals that (1) the X-ray emission level gradually decreases since 2005; and (2) the X-ray spectrum is soft in the optical "turn-off" state and hard in the "turn-on" state. We argue that the disappearance of the classical broad H$α$ emission can be likely explained by the disk-wind broad-line-region model, in which the CL phenomenon is sensitive to luminosity in individual AGNs.

Ultrafast generation and detection of propagating coherent acoustic phonon wave packets in ultra-thin iron pnictide films

We observe pronounced oscillations in differential reflectivity of 9 nm and 60 nm BaFe\textsubscript{2}As\textsubscript{2} (Ba-122) thin films using ultrafast optical spectroscopy. Our studies show that the oscillations result from propagating longitudinal acoustic (LA) phonon wave packets with strong thickness and temperature dependence. Particularly, the experimentally measured oscillation frequency approaches to 50 GHz for the ultra-thin film. Our calculations show that Young's modulus of 9 nm thin film is nearly four times as large as that of 60 nm thin film, consistent with the experiment. The increase in Young's modulus as thickness decrease was attributed to the decrease in parent Ba-122 tetragonality $c/a$ near the film-substrate interface due to material-substrate mismatch effect. %Temperature dependence of LA phonon mode frequency for 9 nm Ba-122 thin film is reported. The temperature-dependent change in LA phonon frequency was attributed to the change in parent Ba-122 othorhombicity $(a-b)/(a+b)$.

Quantum Fisher Information Perspective on Sensing in Anti-PT Symmetric Systems

The efficient sensing of weak environmental perturbations via special degeneracies called exceptional points in non-Hermitian systems has gained enormous traction in the last few decades. However, in contrast to the extensive literature on parity-time (PT) symmetric systems, the exotic hallmarks of anti-PT symmetric systems are only beginning to be realized now. Very recently, a characteristic resonance of vanishing linewidth in anti-PT symmetric systems was shown to exhibit tremendous sensitivity to intrinsic nonlinearities. Given the primacy of sensing in non-Hermitian systems, in general, and the immense topicality of anti-PT symmetry, we investigate the statistical bound to the measurement sensitivity for any arbitrary perturbation in a dissipatively coupled, anti-PT symmetric system. Using the framework of quantum Fisher information and the long-time solution to the full master equation, we analytically compute the Cramer-Rao bound for the system properties like the detunings and the couplings. As an illustrative example of this formulation, we inspect and reaffirm the role of a long-lived resonance in dissipatively interacting systems for sensing applications. \end{abstract}

The TaichuPix1: A Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor with fast in-pixel readout electronics for the CEPC vertex detector

The proposed Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC) imposes new challenges for the vertex detector in terms of high resolution, low material, fast readout and low power. The Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor (MAPS) technology has been chosen as one of the most promising candidates to satisfy these requirements. A MAPS prototype, called TaichuPix1, based on a data-driven structure, together with a column drain readout architecture, benefiting from the ALPIDE and FE-I3 approaches, has been implemented to achieve fast readout. This paper presents the overall architecture of TaichuPix1, the experimental characterization of the FE-I3-like matrix, the threshold dispersion, the noise distribution of the pixels and verifies the charge collection using a radioactive source. These results prove the functionality of the digital periphery and serializer are able to transmit the collected charge to the data interface correctly. Moreover, the individual self-tests of the serializer verify it can work up to about 3 Gbps. And it also indicates that the analog front-end features a fast-rising signal with a short time walk and that the FE-I3-like in-pixel digital logic is properly operating at the 40 MHz system clock.

Constrains on optical emission of FAST-detected FRB 20181130B with GWAC synchronized observations

Multi-wavelength simultaneous observations are essential to the constraints on the origin of fast radio bursts (FRBs). However, it is a significant observational challenge due to the nature of FRBs as transients with a radio millisecond duration, which occur randomly in the sky regardless of time and position. Here, we report the search for short-time fast optical bursts in the GWAC archived data associated with FRB 20181130B, which were detected by the Five Hundred Meter Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) and recently reported. No new credible sources were detected in all single GWAC images with an exposure time of 10 s, including image with coverage of the expected arrival time in optical wavelength by taking the high dispersion measurements into account. Our results provide a limiting magnitude of 15.43$\pm0.04$ mag in R band, corresponding to a flux density of 1.66 Jy or 8.35 mag in AB system by assuming that the duration of the optical band is similar to that of the radio band of about 10 ms. This limiting magnitude makes the spectral index of $α<0.367$ from optical to radio wavelength. The possible existence of longer duration optical emission was also investigated with an upper limits of 0.33 Jy (10.10 mag), 1.74 mJy (15.80 mag) and 0.16 mJy (18.39 mag) for the duration of 50 ms, 10 s and 6060 s, respectively. This undetected scenario could be partially attributed to the shallow detection capability, as well as the high inferred distance of FRB 20181130B and the low fluence in radio wavelength. The future detectability of optical flashes associated with nearby and bright FRBs are also discussed in this paper.

WALLABY Pre-Pilot Survey: HI Content of the Eridanus Supergroup

We present observations of the Eridanus supergroup obtained with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) as part of the pre-pilot survey for the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). The total number of detected HI sources is 55, of which 12 are background galaxies not associated with the Eridanus supergroup. Two massive HI clouds are identified and large HI debris fields are seen in the NGC 1359 interacting galaxy pair, and the face-on spiral galaxy NGC 1385. We describe the data products from the source finding algorithm and present the basic parameters. The presence of distorted HI morphology in all detected galaxies suggests ongoing tidal interactions within the subgroups. The Eridanus group has a large fraction of HI deficient galaxies as compared to previously studied galaxy groups. These HI deficient galaxies are not found at the centre of the group. We find that galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup do not follow the general trend of the atomic gas fraction versus stellar mass scaling relation, which indicates that the scaling relation changes with environmental density. In general, the majority of these galaxies are actively forming stars.

WALLABY Pre-Pilot Survey: The effects of angular momentum and environment on the HI gas and star formation properties of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup

We use high-resolution ASKAP observations of galaxies in the Eridanus supergroup to study their HI, angular momentum and star formation properties, as part of the WALLABY pre-pilot survey efforts. The Eridanus supergroup is composed of three sub-groups in the process of merging to form a cluster. The main focus of this study is the Eridanus (or NGC 1395) sub-group. The baryonic specific angular momentum - baryonic mass ($j_{\mathrm{b}} - M_{\mathrm{b}}$) relation for the Eridanus galaxies is observed to be an unbroken power law of the form $j_{\mathrm{b}} \propto M_{\mathrm{b}}^{0.57 \pm 0.05}$, with a scatter of $\sim 0.10 \pm 0.01$ dex, consistent with previous works. We examine the relation between the atomic gas fraction, $f_{\mathrm{atm}}$, and the integrated atomic disc stability parameter $q$ (the $f_{\mathrm{atm}} - q$ relation), and find that the Eridanus galaxies deviate significantly from the relation owing to environmental processes such as tidal interactions and ram-pressure affecting their HI gas. We find that a majority of the Eridanus galaxies are HI deficient compared to normal star-forming galaxies in the field. We also find that the star formation among the Eridanus galaxies may be suppressed owing to their environment, thus hinting at significant levels of pre-processing within the Eridanus sub-group, even before the galaxies have entered a cluster-like environment.

DeepDDS: deep graph neural network with attention mechanism to predict synergistic drug combinations

Drug combination therapy has become a increasingly promising method in the treatment of cancer. However, the number of possible drug combinations is so huge that it is hard to screen synergistic drug combinations through wet-lab experiments. Therefore, computational screening has become an important way to prioritize drug combinations. Graph neural network have recently shown remarkable performance in the prediction of compound-protein interactions, but it has not been applied to the screening of drug combinations. In this paper, we proposed a deep learning model based on graph neural networks and attention mechanism to identify drug combinations that can effectively inhibit the viability of specific cancer cells. The feature embeddings of drug molecule structure and gene expression profiles were taken as input to multi-layer feedforward neural network to identify the synergistic drug combinations. We compared DeepDDS with classical machine learning methods and other deep learning-based methods on benchmark data set, and the leave-one-out experimental results showed that DeepDDS achieved better performance than competitive methods. Also, on an independent test set released by well-known pharmaceutical enterprise AstraZeneca, DeepDDS was superior to competitive methods by more than 16\% predictive precision. Furthermore, we explored the interpretability of the graph attention network, and found the correlation matrix of atomic features revealed important chemical substructures of drugs. We believed that DeepDDS is an effective tool that prioritized synergistic drug combinations for further wet-lab experiment validation.

Detection of Flare-associated CME Candidates on Two M-dwarfs by GWAC and Fast, Time-resolved Spectroscopic Follow-ups

The flare-associated stellar coronal mass ejection (CME) in solar-like and late type stars is quite essential for the habitability of an exoplanet. In this paper, we report detection of flare-associated CMEs in two M-dwarfs, thanks to the high cadence survey carried out by the Ground Wide-angle Camera system and the fast photometric and spectroscopic follow-ups. The flare energy in $R-$band is determined to be $1.6\times10^{35}\ \mathrm{erg}$ and $8.1\times10^{33}\ \mathrm{erg}$ based on the modeling of their light curves. The time-resolved spectroscopyic observations start at about 20 and 40 minutes after the trigger in both cases. The large projected maximum velocity of $\sim500-700\ \mathrm{km\ s^{-1}}$ suggests that the high velocity wing of their H$α$ emission lines are most likely resulted from a CME event in both stars, after excluding the possibility of chromospheric evaporation and coronal rain. The masses of the CMEs are estimated to be $1.5-4.5\times10^{19}\ \mathrm{g}$ and $7.1\times10^{18}\ \mathrm{g}$.

WALLABY Pilot Survey: First Look at the Hydra I Cluster and Ram Pressure Stripping of ESO 501-G075

We present results from neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) observations of Hydra I, the first cluster observed by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY) on the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. For the first time we show that WALLABY can reach its final survey sensitivity. Leveraging the sensitivity, spatial resolution and wide field of view of WALLABY, we identify a galaxy, ESO 501-G075, that lies near the virial radius of Hydra I and displays an HI tail. ESO 501-G075 shows a similar level of morphological asymmetry as another cluster member, which lies near the cluster centre and shows signs of experiencing ram pressure. We investigate possible environmental processes that could be responsible for producing the observed disturbance in the HI morphology of ESO 501-G075. We rule out tidal interactions, as ESO 501-G075 has no nearby neighbours within $\sim0.34$Mpc. We use a simple model to determine that ram pressure can remove gas from the disc at radii $r\gtrsim25$kpc. We conclude that, as ESO 501-G075 has a typical HI mass compared to similar galaxies in the field and its morphology is compatible with a ram pressure scenario, ESO 501-G075 is likely recently infalling into the cluster and in the early stages of experiencing ram pressure.
