Search for a 33.9 MeV/c^2 Neutral Particle in Pion Decay

The E815 (NuTeV) neutrino experiment has performed a search for a 33.9 MeV/c^2 weakly-interacting neutral particle produced in pion decay. Such a particle may be responsible for an anomaly in the timing distribution of neutrino interactions in the KARMEN experiment. E815 has searched for this particle's decays in an instrumented decay region; no evidence for this particle was found. The search is sensitive to pion branching ratios as low as 10^-13.

Nuclear Structure Functions in the Large x Large Q^2 Kinematic Region in Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering

Data from the CCFR E770 Neutrino Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) experiment at Fermilab contain events with large Bjorken x (x>0.7) and high momentum transfer (Q^2>50 (GeV/c)^2). A comparison of the data with a model based on no nuclear effects at large x, shows a significant excess of events in the data. Addition of Fermi gas motion of the nucleons in the nucleus to the model does not explain the excess. Adding a higher momentum tail due to the formation of ``quasi-deuterons'' makes some improvement. An exponentially falling F_2 \propto e^-s(x-x_0) at large x, predicted by ``multi-quark clusters'' and ``few-nucleon correlations'', can describe the data. A value of s=8.3 \pm 0.7(stat.)\pm 0.7(sys.) yields the best agreement with the data.

Evidence for Diffractive Charm Production in nu_mu Fe and nubar_mu Fe Scattering at the Tevatron

We present evidence for the diffractive processes nu_mu Fe -> mu^- D_s^+ (D_s^*+) Fe and nubar_mu Fe -> mu^+ D_s^- (D_s^*-) Fe using the Fermilab SSQT neutrino beam and the Lab E neutrino detector. We observe the neutrino trident reactions nu_mu Fe -> nu_mu mu^- mu^+ Fe and nubar_mu Fe -> nubar_mu mu^+ mu^- Fe at rates consistent with Standard Model expectations. We see no evidence for neutral-current production of J/psi via either diffractive or deep inelastic scattering mechanisms.

Low Q^2 low x structure function analysis of CCFR data for F2

Analyses of structure functions (SFs) from neutrino and muon deep inelastic scattering data have shown discrepancies in F2 for x < 0.1. A new SF analysis of the CCFR collaboration data examining regions in x down to x=.0015 and 0.4 < Q^2 < 1.0 is presented. Comparison to corrected charged lepton scattering results for F2 from the NMC and E665 experiments are made. Differences between muon and neutrino scattering allow that the behavior of F2 from muon scattering could be different from F2 from neutrino scattering as Q^2 approaches zero. Comparisons between F2 muon and F2 neutrino are made in this limit.

Precision Calibration of the NuTeV Calorimeter

NuTeV is a neutrino-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering experiment at Fermilab. The detector consists of an iron-scintillator sampling calorimeter interspersed with drift chambers, followed by a muon toroidal spectrometer. We present determinations of response and resolution functions of the NuTeV calorimeter for electrons, hadrons, and muons over an energy range of 4.8 to 190 GeV. The absolute hadronic energy scale is determined to an accuracy of 0.43%. We compare our measurements to predictions from calorimeter theory and GEANT3 simulations.

Charm Production at NuTeV

Neutrino deep-inelastic scattering provides a means to study both the strange and charm content of the nucleon. The NuTeV experiment (Fermilab E-8Neutrino deep-inelastic scattering provides a means to study both the strange and charm content of the nucleon. The NuTeV experiment (Fermilab E-815) takes full advantage of separated neutrino and anti-neutrino beams to probe the nucleon. The strange sea is studied with charged-current charm production resulting in an opposite-signed two muon final state. The charm content of the nucleon is probed via neutral-current charm production creating an event with a single wrong-signed muon. Preliminary results are presented for both analyses.

Strange Content of the Nucleon (NuTeV)

The NuTeV experiment uses neutrino deep-inelastic scattering from separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams to study the structure of the nucleon. Charged-current production of charm is sensitive to the strange content of the nucleon while neutral-current charm production probes the charm content. Preliminary analyses of both topics are presented along with discussion of possible momentum asymmetry in the strange sea.

A Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering at NuTeV

The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab presents a determination of the electroweak mixing angle. High purity, large statistics samples of muon-neutrino and muon-antineutrino events allow the use of the Paschos-Wolfenstein relation. This considerably reduces systematic errors associated with charm production and other sources. With Standard Model assumptions, this measurement of sin2thw indirectly determines the W boson mass to a precision comparable to direct measurements from high energy e+e- and p-pbar colliders. NuTeV measures sin^2theta_W (on-shell) = 0.2253 +/- 0.0019(stat) +/- 0.0010(syst) which implies M_W = 80.26 +/- 0.11 GeV.

Measurement of sin^2 theta_W in nu N Scattering from NuTeV

We report the measurement of sin^2 theta_W in nu N deep inelastic scattering from the NuTeV experiment. By using separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, NuTeV is able to determine sin^2 theta_W with smaller systematic and similar or smaller statistical errors when compared to previous neutrino experiments. NuTeV measures sin^2 theta_W (on-shell) = 0.2253 +/- 0.0019(stat.) +/- 0.0010(sys.), which implies M_W = 80.26 +/- 0.11 GeV/c^2.

Magnetoresistance, Micromagnetism, and Domain Wall Scattering in Epitaxial hcp Co Films

Large negative magnetoresistance (MR) observed in transport measurements of hcp Co films with stripe domains were recently reported and interpreted in terms of a novel domain wall (DW) scattering mechanism. Here detailed MR measurements, magnetic force microscopy, and micromagnetic calculations are combined to elucidate the origin of MR in this material. The large negative room temperature MR reported previously is shown to be due to ferromagnetic resistivity anisotropy. Measurements of the resistivity for currents parallel (CIW) and perpendicular to DWs (CPW) have been conducted as a function of temperature. Low temperature results show that any intrinsic effect of DWs scattering on MR of this material is very small compared to the anisotropic MR.

Magnetoresistance of Epitaxial Fe Wires with Varied Domain Wall Structure

The low temperature negative domain wall (DW) contribution to the resistivity observed in expitaxial Fe microstructures has been investigated as a function of film thickness. The DW spin structure changes from Bloch to Neel-like with decreasing film thickness. Results suggest that an interplay between orbital effects in the internal magnetic fields near DWs and thin film surface scattering are at the origin of the observed negative wall contribution.

DIS Prospects at the Future Muon Collider Facility

We discuss prospects of deep inelastic scattering physics capabilities at the future muon collider facility. In addition to mu^+ mu^- collider itself, the facility provides other possibilities. Among the possibilities, we present muon-proton collider and neutrino fixed target programs at the muon collider facility. This mu-p collider program extends kinematic reach and luminosity by an order of magnitude, increasing the possibility of search for new exotic particles. Perhaps most intriguing DIS prospects come from utilizing high intensity neutrino beam resulting from continuous decays of muons in various sections of the muon collider facility. One of the most interesting findings is a precision measurement of electroweak mixing angle, sin^2theta_W, which can be achieved to the precision equivalent to delta M_W ~ 30 MeV.

Measurements of the longitudinal structure function and |V_cs| in the CCFR experiment

Measurements of charged current neutrino and anti-neutrino nucleon interactions in the CCFR detector are used to extract the structure functions, F_2, xF_3(nu), xF_3(nubar) and R(longitudinal) in the kinematic region 0.01<x<0.6 and 1<Q^2<300 GeV^2. The new measurements of R in the x<0.1 region provide a constraint on the level of the gluon distribution. The x and Q^2 dependence of R is compared with a QCD based fit to previous data. The CKM matrix element |V_cs| is extracted from a combined analysis of xF_3 and dimuon data.

Measurement of sin2thetaW from Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering at NuTeV

We report the measurement of sin2thetaW in neutrino-nucleon deep inelastic scattering from the NuTeV experiment. Using separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, NuTeV is able to determine sin2thetaW with low systematic errors by measuring the Paschos-Wolfenstein variable R-minus, a ratio of differences of neutrino and anti-neutrino neutral-current and charged-current cross-sections. NuTeV measures sin2thetaW(on-shell)= 0.2253+/-0.0019(stat)+/-0.0010(syst), which implies a W mass of 80.26+/-0.11 GeV.

Negative Domain Wall Contribution to the Resistivity of Microfabricated Fe Wires

The effect of domain walls on electron transport has been investigated in microfabricated Fe wires (0.65 to 20 $μm$ linewidths) with controlled stripe domains. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements as a function of domain wall density, temperature and the angle of the applied field are used to determine the low field MR contributions due to conventional sources in ferromagnetic materials and that due to the erasure of domain walls. A negative domain wall contribution to the resistivity is found. This result is discussed in light of a recent theoretical study of the effect of domain walls on quantum transport.

Magnetoresistance due to Domain Walls in Micron Scale Fe Wires with Stripe Domains

The magnetoresistance (MR) associated with domain boundaries has been investigated in microfabricated bcc Fe (0.65 to 20 $μ$m linewidth) wires with controlled stripe domains. Domain configurations have been characterized using magnetic force microscopy. MR measurements as a function of field angle, temperature and domain configuration are used to estimate MR contributions due to resistivity anisotropy and domain walls. Evidence is presented that domain boundaries enhance the conductivity in such microstructures over a broad range of temperatures (1.5 K to 80 K).

The Determination of $α_S$ at Hadron Colliders

Hadron colliders offer a unique opportunity to test perturbative QCD because, rather than producing events at a specific beam energy, the dynamics of the hard scattering is probed simultaneously at a wide range of momentum transfers. This makes the determination of $\al$ and the parton density functions (PDF) at hadron colliders particularly interesting. In this paper we restrict ourselves to extracting $\al$ for a given PDF at a scale which is directly related to the transverse energy produced in the collision. As an example, we focus on the single jet inclusive transverse energy distribution and use the published '88-'89 CDF data with an integrated luminosity of 4.2 pb$^{-1}$. The evolution of the coupling constant over a wide range of scales (from 30~GeV to 500~GeV) is clearly shown and is in agreement with the QCD expectation. The data to be obtained in the current Tevatron run (expected to be well in excess 100 pb$^{-1}$ for both the CDF and DØ experiments) will significantly decrease the experimental errors.
