Optical spectroscopic investigation on the temperature-dependent electronic structure evolution of the Jeff,1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4

We investigated the temperature-dependent evolution of the electronic structure of the Jeff,1/2 Mott insulator Sr2IrO4 using optical spectroscopy. The optical conductivity spectra $σ(ω)$ of this compound has recently been found to exhibit two d-d transitions associated with the transition between the Jeff,1/2 and Jeff,3/2 bands due to the cooperation of the electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. As the temperature increases, the two peaks show significant changes resulting in a decrease in the Mott gap. The experimental observations are compared with the results of first-principles calculation in consideration of increasing bandwidth. We discuss the effect of the temperature change on the electronic structure of Sr2IrO4 in terms of local lattice distortion, excitonic effect, electron-phonon coupling, and magnetic ordering.

Fundamental thickness limit of itinerant ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ thin films

We report on a fundamental thickness limit of the itinerant ferromagnetic oxide SrRuO$_3$ that might arise from the orbital-selective quantum confinement effects. Experimentally, SrRuO$_3$ films remain metallic even for a thickness of 2 unit cells (uc), but the Curie temperature, T$_C$, starts to decrease at 4 uc and becomes zero at 2 uc. Using the Stoner model, we attributed the T$_C$ decrease to a decrease in the density of states (N$_o$). Namely, in the thin film geometry, the hybridized Ru-d$_yz,zx$ orbitals are terminated by top and bottom interfaces, resulting in quantum confinement and reduction of N$_o$.

Localized electronic states induced by defects and possible origin of ferroelectricity in strontium titanate thin films

Several defect configurations including oxygen vacancies have been investigated as possible origins of the reported room-temperature ferroelectricity of strontium titanate (STO) thin films [Appl. Phys. Letts. 91, 042908 (2007)]. First-principles calculations revealed that the Sr-O-O vacancy complexes create deep localized states in the band gap of SrTiO3 without affecting its insulating property. These results are in agreement with electronic structural changes determined from optical transmission and X-ray absorption measurements. This work opens the way to exploiting oxygen vacancies and their complexes as a source of ferroelectricity in perovskite oxide thin films, including STO.

Design and Electronics Commissioning of the Physics Prototype of a Si-W Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the International Linear Collider

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the electromagnetic calorimeter, the current baseline choice is a high granularity sampling calorimeter with tungsten as absorber and silicon detectors as sensitive material. A ``physics prototype'' has been constructed, consisting of thirty sensitive layers. Each layer has an active area of 18x18 cm2 and a pad size of 1x1 cm2. The absorber thickness totals 24 radiation lengths. It has been exposed in 2006 and 2007 to electron and hadron beams at the DESY and CERN beam test facilities, using a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. In this paper, the prototype and the data acquisition chain are described and a summary of the data taken in the 2006 beam tests is presented. The methods used to subtract the pedestals and calibrate the detector are detailed. The signal-over-noise ratio has been measured at 7.63 +/- 0.01. Some electronics features have been observed; these lead to coherent noise and crosstalk between pads, and also crosstalk between sensitive and passive areas. The performance achieved in terms of uniformity and stability is presented.

Bandwidth-Controlled Insulator-Metal Transition and Correlated Metallic State in 5$d$ Transition Metal Oxides Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2, and $\infty$)

We investigated the electronic structures of the 5$d$ Ruddlesden-Popper series Sr$_{n+1}$Ir$_{n}$O$_{3n+1}$ ($n$=1, 2, and $\infty$) using optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. As 5$d$ orbitals are spatially more extended than 3$d$ or 4$d$ orbitals, it has been widely accepted that correlation effects are minimal in 5$d$ compounds. However, we observed a bandwidth-controlled transition from a Mott insulator to a metal as we increased $n$. In addition, the artificially synthesized perovskite SrIrO$_{3}$ showed a very large mass enhancement of about 6, indicating that it was in a correlated metallic state.

Precise Measurement of Neutrino and Anti-neutrino Differential Cross Sections

The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab has obtained a unique high statistics sample of neutrino and anti-neutrino interactions using its high-energy sign-selected beam. We present a measurement of the differential cross section for charged-current neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering from iron. Structure functions, F_2(x,Q^2) and xF_3(x,Q^2), are determined by fitting the inelasticity, y, dependence of the cross sections. This measurement has significantly improved systematic precision as a consequence of more precise understanding of hadron and muon energy scales.

Performance of an Operating High Energy Physics Data Grid: D0SAR-Grid

The D0 experiment at Fermilab's Tevatron will record several petabytes of data over the next five years in pursuing the goals of understanding nature and searching for the origin of mass. Computing resources required to analyze these data far exceed capabilities of any one institution. Moreover, the widely scattered geographical distribution of D0 collaborators poses further serious difficulties for optimal use of human and computing resources. These difficulties will exacerbate in future high energy physics experiments, like the LHC. The computing grid has long been recognized as a solution to these problems. This technology is being made a more immediate reality to end users in D0 by developing a grid in the D0 Southern Analysis Region (D0SAR), D0SAR-Grid, using all available resources within it and a home-grown local task manager, McFarm. We will present the architecture in which the D0SAR-Grid is implemented, the use of technology and the functionality of the grid, and the experience from operating the grid in simulation, reprocessing and data analyses for a currently running HEP experiment.

A Departure from Prediction: Electroweak Physics at Nutev

The NuTeV experiment has performed precision measurements of the ratio of neutral-current to charged-current cross-sections in high rate, high energy neutrino and anti-neutrino beams on a dense, primarily steel, target. The separate neutrino and anti-neutrino beams, high statistics, and improved control of other experimental systematics, allow the determination of electroweak parameters with significantly greater precision than past neutrino-nucleon scattering experiments. Our null hypothesis test of the standard model prediction measures sin2thetaW=0.2277+/-0.0013(stat)+/-0.0009(syst), a value which is 3.0 standard deviations above the prediction. We discuss possible explanations for and implications of this discrepancy.

A Precise Determination of Electroweak Parameters in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering

The NuTeV collaboration has extracted sin^2theta_W from the ratios of neutral current to charged current neutrino and anti-neutrino cross-sections. Our value, sin^2theta_W(on-shell)=0.2277+/-0.0013(stat)+/-0.0009(syst), is three standard deviations above the standard model prediction. We also present a model independent analysis of the same data.

Caby Photometry of the Hyades: Comparisons to the Field Stars

Intermediate-band photometry of the Hyades cluster on the Caby system is presented for dwarf stars ranging from spectral type A through late K. A mean hk, b-y relation is constructed using only single stars without anomalous atmospheres and compared to the field stars of the solar neighborhood. For the F dwarfs, the Hyades relation defines an approximate LOWER bound in the two-color diagram, consistent with an [Fe/H] between +0.10 and +0.15. These index-color diagrams follow the common convention of presenting stars with highest abundance at the bottom of the plot although the index values for the metal-rich stars are numerically larger. For field F dwarfs in the range [Fe/H] between +0.4 and -1.0, [Fe/H] = -5.6 delta-hk + 0.125, with no evidence for a color dependence in the slope. For the G and K dwarfs, the Hyades mean relation crosses the field star distribution in the two-color diagram, defining an approximate UPPER bound for the local disk stars. Stars found above the Hyades stars fall in at least one of three categories: [Fe/H] below -0.7, [Fe/H] above that of the Hyades, or chromospherically active. It is concluded that, contrary to the predictions of model atmospheres, the hk index for cool dwarfs at a given color hits a maximum value for stars below solar composition and, with increasing [Fe/H] above some critical value, declines. This trend is consistent, however, with the predictions from synthetic indices based upon much narrower Ca filters where the crossover is caused by the metallicity sensitivity of b-y.

A Search for Muon-neutrino to Electron-neutrino and Muon-antineutrino to Electron-antineutrino Oscillations at NuTeV

Limits on $ν_μ\to ν_e$ and $\barν_μ\to \barν_e$ oscillations are extracted using the NuTeV detector with sign-selected $ν_μ$ and $\nub_μ$ beams. In $\nub_μ$ mode, for the case of $\sin^2 2α= 1$, $Δm^2 > 2.6$ ${\rm eV^2}$ is excluded, and for $Δm^2 \gg 1000$ ${\rm eV^2}$, $\sin^2 2α> 1.1 \times 10^{-3}$. The NuTeV data exclude the high $Δm^2$ end of $\barν_μ\to \barν_e$ oscillations parameters favored by the LSND experiment without the need to assume that the oscillation parameters for $ν$ and $\nub$ are the same. We present the most stringent experimental limits for $ν_μ(\barν_μ) \to ν_e (\barν_e)$ oscillations in the large $Δm^2$ region.

The Potential for Neutrino Physics at Muon Colliders and Dedicated High Current Muon Storage Rings

Conceptual design studies are underway for muon colliders and other high-current muon storage rings that have the potential to become the first true ``neutrino factories''. Muon decays in long straight sections of the storage rings would produce precisely characterized beams of electron and muon type neutrinos of unprecedented intensity. This article reviews the prospects for these facilities to greatly extend our capabilities for neutrino experiments, largely emphasizing the physics of neutrino interactions.

Observation of an Anomalous Number of Dimuon Events in a High Energy Neutrino Beam

A search for long-lived neutral particles (N^0's) with masses above 2.2 GeV/c^2 that decay into at least one muon has been performed using an instrumented decay channel at the NuTeV experiment at Fermilab. Data were examined for particles decaying into the final states mu mu, mu e, and mu pi. Three mu mu events were observed over an expected Standard Model background of 0.069 +/- 0.010 events; no events were observed in the other modes.

Search for the Lepton Number Violating Process nu_mu-bar e^- -> mu^- nu_e-bar

The NuTeV experiment at Fermilab has used a sign-selected neutrino beam to perform a search for the lepton number violating process nu_mu-bar e^- -> mu^- nu_e-bar, and to measure the cross-section of the Standard Model inverse muon decay process nu_mu e^- -> mu^- nu_e. NuTeV measures the inverse muon decay asymptotic cross-section sigma/E to be 13.8 +/- 1.2 +/- 1.4 x 10^-42 cm^2/GeV. The experiment also observes no evidence for lepton number violation and places one of the most restrictive limits on the LNV/IMD cross-section ratio at < 1.7% at 90% C.L. for V-A couplings and < 0.6% for scalar couplings.

Observation of Anomalous Dimuon Events in the NuTeV Decay Detector

A search for long-lived neutral particles (N^0) which decay into at least one muon has been performed using an instrumented decay channel at the E815 (NuTeV) experiment at Fermilab. The decay channel was composed of helium bags interspersed with drift chambers, and was used in conjunction with the NuTeV neutrino detector to search for N^0 decays. The data were examined for particles decaying into the muonic final states mu mu, mu e, and mu pi. Three mu mu events were observed over an expected background of 0.040 +/- 0.009 events; no events were observed in the other modes. Although the observed events share some characteristics with neutrino interactions, the observed rate is a factor of 75 greater than expected. No Standard Model process appears to be consistent with this observation.

Physics at a Neutrino Factory

In response to the growing interest in building a Neutrino Factory to produce high intensity beams of electron- and muon-neutrinos and antineutrinos, in October 1999 the Fermilab Directorate initiated two six-month studies. The first study, organized by N. Holtkamp and D. Finley, was to investigate the technical feasibility of an intense neutrino source based on a muon storage ring. This design study has produced a report in which the basic conclusion is that a Neutrino Factory is technically feasible, although it requires an aggressive R&D program. The second study, which is the subject of this report, was to explore the physics potential of a Neutrino Factory as a function of the muon beam energy and intensity, and for oscillation physics, the potential as a function of baseline.
