NLS with mass-subcritical combined nonlinearities: small mass $L^2$-scattering

We prove small data scattering in the mass-subcritical regime for the NLS equation with double nonlinearities, where a focusing leading term is perturbed by a lower order defocusing nonlinear term. Our proof relies on the pseudo-conformal transformation in conjunction with a general variational argument used to obtain the positivity of certain modified energies. Moreover, the smallness assumption is only on the mass of the initial data, and not on the whole $Σ$-norm.

Mass-subcritical Half-Wave Equation with mixed nonlinearities: existence and non-existence of ground states

We consider the problem of existence of constrained minimizers for the focusing mass-subcritical Half-Wave equation with a defocusing mass-subcritical perturbation. We show the existence of a critical mass such that minimizers do exist for any mass larger than or equal to the critical one, and do not exist below it. At the dynamical level, in the one dimensional case, we show that the ground states are orbitally stable.

Scattering for non-radial 3D NLS with combined nonlinearities: the interaction Morawetz approach

We give a new proof of the scattering below the ground state energy level for a class of nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLS) with mass-energy intercritical competing nonlinearities. Specifically, the NLS has a focusing leading order nonlinearity with a defocusing perturbation. Our strategy combines interaction Morawetz estimates à la Dodson-Murphy and a new crucial bound for the Pohozaev functional of localized functions, which is essential to overcome the lack of a monotonicity condition. Furthermore, we give the rate of blow-up for symmetric solutions.

A Logarithmic Uncertainty Principle for Functions with Radial Symmetry

In this note, we prove a new uncertainty principle for functions with radial symmetry by differentiating a radial version of the Stein-Weiss inequality. The difficulty is to prove the differentiability in the limit of the best constant that, unlike the general case, it is not known.

A note on the fractional Hardy inequality

We give a direct proof of fractional Hardy inequality by means of Littlewood-Paley decomposition and properties of singular homogeneous kernels of degree -$d$. A refinement when $q>2$ is proved.

Compact embeddings for fractional super and sub harmonic functions with radial symmetry

We prove compactness of the embeddings in Sobolev spaces for fractional super and sub harmonic functions with radial symmetry. The main tool is a pointwise decay for radially symmetric functions belonging to a function space defined by finite homogeneous Sobolev norm together with finite $L^2$ norm of the Riesz potentials. As a byproduct we prove also existence of maximizers for the interpolation inequalities in Sobolev spaces for radially symmetric fractional super and sub harmonic functions.

Dynamics of solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We review some recent results on the long time dynamics of solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation governing non-trapped dipolar Quantum Gases. We describe the asymptotic behaviours of solutions for different initial configurations of the initial datum in the energy space, specifically for data below, above, and at the Mass-Energy threshold. We revisit some properties of powers of the Riesz transforms by means of the decay properties of the heat kernel associated to the parabolic biharmonic equation. These decay properties play a fundamental tool to establish the dynamical features of the solutions to the equation.

Dynamical collapse of cylindrical symmetric Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the formation of singularities for cylindrical symmetric solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. We prove that solutions arising from initial data with energy below the energy of the Ground State and that do not scatter collapse in finite time. The main tools to prove our result are the variational characterization of the Ground State energy, suitable localized virial identities for cylindrical symmetric functions, and general integral and pointwise estimates for operators involving powers of the Riesz transforms.

Ground state energy threshold and blow-up for NLS with competing nonlinearities

We consider the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined nonlinearities, where the leading term is an intracritical focusing power-type nonlinearity, and the perturbation is given by a power-type defocusing one. We completely answer the question wether the ground state energy, which is a threshold between global existence and formation of singularities, is achieved. For any prescribed mass, for mass-supercritical or mass-critical defocusing perturbations, the ground state energy is achieved by a radially symmetric and decreasing solution to the associated stationary equation. For mass-subcritical perturbations, we show the existence of a critical prescribed mass, precisely the mass of the unique, static, positive solution to the associated elliptic equation, such that the ground state energy is achieved for any mass equal or smaller than the critical one. Moreover, the ground state energy is not achieved for mass larger than the critical one. As a byproduct of the variational characterization of the ground state energy, we prove the existence of blowing-up solutions in finite time, for any energy below the ground state energy threshold.

Finite energy traveling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the subsonic regime

In this paper we study the existence of finite energy traveling waves for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This problem has deserved a lot of attention in the literature, but the existence of solutions in the whole subsonic range was a standing open problem till the work of Maris in 2013. However, such result is valid only in dimension 3 and higher. In this paper we first prove the existence of finite energy traveling waves for almost every value of the speed in the subsonic range. Our argument works identically well in dimensions 2 and 3. With this result in hand, a compactness argument could fill the range of admissible speeds. We are able to do so in dimension 3, recovering the aforementioned result by Maris. The planar case turns out to be more difficult and the compactness argument works only under an additional assumption on the vortex set of the approximating solutions.

Asymptotic dynamic for dipolar Quantum Gases below the ground state energy threshold

We consider the Gross-Pitaevskii equation describing a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate without external confinement. We first consider the unstable regime, where the nonlocal nonlinearity is neither positive nor radially symmetric and standing states are known to exist. We prove that under the energy threshold given by the ground state, all global in time solutions behave as free waves asymptotically in time. The ingredients of the proof are variational characterization of the ground states energy, a suitable profile decomposition theorem and localized virial estimates, enabling to carry out a Concentration/Compactness and Rigidity scheme. As a byproduct we show that in the stable regime, where standing states do not exist, any initial data in the energy space scatters.

On Traveling Solitary Waves and Absence of Small Data Scattering for Nonlinear Half-Wave Equations

We consider nonlinear half-wave equations with focusing power-type nonlinearity $$ i \pt_t u = \sqrt{-Δ} \, u - |u|^{p-1} u, \quad \mbox{with $(t,x) \in \R \times \R^d$} $$ with exponents $1 < p < \infty$ for $d=1$ and $1 < p < (d+1)/(d-1)$ for $d \geq 2$. We study traveling solitary waves of the form $$ u(t,x) = e^{iωt} Q_v(x-vt) $$ with frequency $ω\in \R$, velocity $v \in \R^d$, and some finite-energy profile $Q_v \in H^{1/2}(\R^d)$, $Q_v \not \equiv 0$. We prove that traveling solitary waves for speeds $|v| \geq 1$ do not exist. Furthermore, we generalize the non-existence result to the square root Klein--Gordon operator $\sqrt{-\DD+m^2}$ and other nonlinearities. As a second main result, we show that small data scattering fails to hold for the focusing half-wave equation in any space dimension. The proof is based on the existence and properties of traveling solitary waves for speeds $|v| < 1$. Finally, we discuss the energy-critical case when $p=(d+1)/(d-1)$ in dimensions $d \geq 2$.

Traveling waves for the quartic focusing Half Wave equation in one space dimension

We consider the quartic focusing Half Wave equation (HW) in one space dimension. We show first that that there exist traveling wave solutions with arbitrary small $H^{\frac 12}(\R)$ norm. This fact shows that small data scattering is not possible for (HW) equation and that below the ground state energy there are solutions whose energy travels as a localised packet and which preserve this localisation in time. This behaviour for (HW) is in sharp contrast with classical NLS in any dimension and with fractional NLS with radial data. The second result addressed is the non existence of traveling waves moving at the speed of light. The main ingredients of the proof are commutator estimates and a careful study of spatial decay of traveling waves profile using the harmonic extension to the upper half space.

Long time dynamics for semirelativistic NLS and Half Wave in arbitrary dimension

We consider the Cauchy problems associated with semirelativistc NLS (sNLS) and half wave (HW). In particular we focus on the following two main questions: local/global Cauchy theory; existence and stability/instability of ground states. In between other results, we prove the existence and stability of ground states for sNLS in the $L^2$ supercritical regime. This is in sharp contrast with the instability of ground states for the corresponding HW, which is also established along the paper, by showing an inflation of norms phenomenon. Concerning the Cauchy theory we show, under radial symmetry assumption the following results: a local existence result in $H^1$ for energy subcritical nonlinearity and a global existence result in the $L^2$ subcritical regime.

On dipolar quantum gases in the unstable regime

We study the nonlinear Schrödinger equation arising in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in the unstable regime. Two cases are studied: the first when the system is free, the second when gradually a trapping potential is added. In both cases we first focus on the existence and stability/ instability properties of standing waves. Our approach leads to the search of critical points of a constrained functional which is unbounded from below on the constraint. In the free case, by showing that the constrained functional has a so-called {\it mountain pass geometry}, we prove the existence of standing states with least energy, the ground states, and show that any ground state is orbitally unstable. Moreover, when the system is free, we show that small data in the energy space scatter in all regimes, stable and unstable. In the second case, if the trapping potential is small, we prove that two different kind of standing waves appears: one corresponds to a {\it topological local minimizer} of the constrained energy functional and it consists in ground states, the other is again of {\it mountain pass type} but now corresponds to excited states. We also prove that any ground state is a {\it topological local minimizer}. Despite the problem is mass supercritical and the functional unbounded from below, the standing waves associated to the set of ground states turn to be orbitally stable. Actually, from the physical point of view, the introduction of the trapping potential stabilizes the system initially unstable. Related to this we observe that it also creates a gap in the ground state energy level of the system. In addition when the trapping potential is active the presence of standing waves with arbitrary small norm does not permit small data scattering. Eventually some asymptotic results are also given.

Sharp lower bounds for Coulomb energy

We prove $L^p$ lower bounds for Coulomb energy for radially symmetric functions in $\dot H^s(\R^3)$ with $\frac 12 <s<\frac{3}{2}$. In case $\frac 12 <s \leq 1$ we show that the lower bounds are sharp.
