The ABCDEFG of Instantons and W-algebras

For arbitrary gauge groups, we check at the one-instanton level that the Nekrasov partition function of pure N=2 super Yang-Mills is equal to the norm of a certain coherent state of the corresponding W-algebra. For non-simply-laced gauge groups, we confirm in particular that the coherent state is in the twisted sector of a simply-laced W-algebra.

Operator spectroscopy for 4d SCFTs with a=c

We study a rich set of four-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) with both central charges identical: $a = c$. These are constructed via the diagonal $\mathcal{N}=2$ or $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauging of the flavor symmetry $G$ of a collection of $\mathcal{N}=2$ Argyres-Douglas theories of type $\mathcal{D}_p(G)$, with or without adjoint chiral multiplets, in arXiv:2106.12579 and arXiv:2111.12092. We compute superconformal indices of some theories where the rank of $G$ is low, performing a refined test for unitarity, and further determine the relevant and marginal operator content in detail. We find that most of these theories flow to interacting SCFTs with $a=c$ in the infrared.

Higgs, Coulomb, and Hall-Littlewood

The Higgs branch of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs can be analyzed via the Hilbert series of the Higgs branch or, in special cases, by computing the Hall-Littlewood index. For any class $\mathcal{S}$ theory corresponding to a genus-zero Riemann surface, they are conjectured to be identical. We present several families of counterexamples. We find that for any class $\mathcal{S}$ theory with four or more $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted punctures, they do not match. We construct 3d mirrors for such theories and analyze their Coulomb branch Hilbert series to compute the Higgs branch Hilbert series of the 4d theory. We further construct $a=c$ theories in class $\mathcal{S}$ using the twisted punctures, and these theories, which includes the $\hat{D}_4(SU(2n+1))$ theories, have Hall--Littlewood index different from the Hilbert series of the Higgs branch. We conjecture that this is the case for all $a=c$ theories with non-empty Higgs branch, including $\mathcal{N}\ge 3$ SCFTs.

Supersymmetric Spectral Form Factor and Euclidean Black Holes

The late-time behavior of spectral form factor (SFF) encodes the inherent discreteness of a quantum system, which should be generically non-vanishing. We study an index analog of the microcanonical spectrum form factor in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. In the large $N$ limit and at large enough energy, the most dominant saddle corresponds to the black hole in the AdS bulk. This gives rise to the slope that decreases exponentially for a small imaginary chemical potential, which is a natural analog of an early time. We find that the `late-time' behavior is governed by the multi-cut saddles that arise in the index matrix model, which are non-perturbatively sub-dominant at early times. These saddles become dominant at late times, preventing the SFF from decaying. These multi-cut saddles correspond to the orbifolded Euclidean black holes in the AdS bulk, therefore giving the geometrical interpretation of the `ramp.' Our analysis is done in the standard AdS/CFT setting without ensemble average or wormholes.

Infinitely many 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs with $a=c$ and beyond

We study a set of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) $\widehatΓ(G)$ labeled by a pair of simply-laced Lie groups $Γ$ and $G$. They are constructed out of gauging a number of $\mathcal{D}_p(G)$ and $(G, G)$ conformal matter SCFTs; therefore they do not have Lagrangian descriptions in general. For $Γ= D_4, E_6, E_7, E_8$ and some special choices of $G$, the resulting theories have identical central charges $(a=c)$ without taking any large $N$ limit. Moreover, we find that the Schur indices for such theories can be written in terms of that of $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang--Mills theory upon rescaling fugacities. Especially, we find that the Schur index of $\widehat{D}_4(SU(N))$ theory for $N$ odd is written in terms of MacMahon's generalized sum-of-divisor function, which is quasi-modular. For generic choices of $Γ$ and $G$, it can be regarded as a generalization of the affine quiver gauge theory obtained from $D3$-branes probing an ALE singularity of type $Γ$. We also comment on a tantalizing connection regarding the theories labeled by $Γ$ in the Deligne--Cvitanović exceptional series.

Classification of large N superconformal gauge theories with a dense spectrum

We classify the large $N$ limits of four-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with simple gauge groups that flow to superconformal fixed points. We restrict ourselves to the ones without a superpotential and with a fixed flavor symmetry. We find 35 classes in total, with 8 having a dense spectrum of chiral gauge-invariant operators. The central charges $a$ and $c$ for the dense theories grow linearly in $N$ in contrast to the $N^2$ growth for the theories with a sparse spectrum. The difference between the central charges $a-c$ can have both signs, and it does not vanish in the large $N$ limit for the dense theories. We find that there can be multiple bands separated by a gap, or a discrete spectrum above the band. We also find a criterion on the matter content for the fixed point theory to possess either a dense or sparse spectrum. We discover a few curious aspects regarding supersymmetric RG flows and $a$-maximization along the way. For all the theories with the dense spectrum, the AdS version of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (including the convex hull condition for the cases with multiple $U(1)$'s) holds for large enough $N$ even though they do not have weakly-coupled gravity duals.

Large N Gauge Theories with a Dense Spectrum and the Weak Gravity Conjecture

We find large N gauge theories containing a large number of operators within a band of low conformal dimensions. One of such examples is the four-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric SU(N) gauge theory with one adjoint and a pair of fundamental/anti-fundamental chiral multiplets. This theory flows to a superconformal theory in the infrared upon a superpotential coupling with gauge singlets. The gap in the low-lying spectrum scales as 1/N and the central charges scale as $O(N^1)$ contrary to the usual $O(N^2)$ scaling of ordinary gauge theory coming from the matrix degree of freedom. We find the AdS version of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) holds for this theory, although it cannot be holographically dual to supergravity. This supports the validity of WGC in a more general theory of quantum gravity.

A 4d N=1 Cardy Formula

We study the asymptotic behavior of the (modified) superconformal index for 4d $\mathcal{N} = 1$ gauge theory. By considering complexified chemical potential, we find that the `high-temperature limit' of the index can be written in terms of the conformal anomalies $3c-2a$. We also find macroscopic entropy from our asymptotic free energy when the Hofman-Maldacena bound $1/2 < a/c < 3/2$ for the interacting SCFT is satisfied. We study $\mathcal{N} = 1$ theories that are dual to AdS$_5 \times Y^{p, p}$ and find that the Cardy limit of our index accounts for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of large black holes.

Instantons from Blow-up

We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations to arbitrary gauge group with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations. Using our blowup equations, we compute the instanton partition functions for 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories for arbitrary gauge theory with a large class of matter representations, without knowing explicit construction of the instanton moduli space. Our examples include exceptional gauge theories with fundamentals, SO(N) gauge theories with spinors, and SU(6) gauge theories with rank-3 antisymmetric hypers. Remarkably, the instanton partition function is completely determined by the perturbative part.

Vanishing OPE Coefficients in 4d N=2 SCFTs

We compute the superconformal characters of various short multiplets in 4d N=2 superconformal algebra, from which selection rules for operator products are obtained. Combining with the superconformal index, we show that a particular short multiplet appearing in the n-fold product of stress-tensor multiplet is absent in the $(A_1, A_{2n})$ Argyres-Douglas (AD) theory. This implies that the operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients involving this multiplet vanish whenever the central charge $c$ is identical to that of the AD theory. Similarly, by considering the n-th power of the current multiplet, we show that a particular short multiplet and OPE coefficients vanish for a class of AD theories with ADE flavor symmetry. We also consider the generalized AD theory of type $(A_{k-1}, A_{n-1})$ for coprime k, n and compute its Macdonald index using the associated W-algebra under a mild assumption. This allows us to show that a number of short multiplets and OPE coefficients vanish in this theory. We also provide a Mathematica file along with this paper, where we implement the algorithm by Cordova-Dumitrescu-Intriligator to compute the spectrum of 4d N=2 superconformal multiplets as well as their superconformal character.

Landscape of Simple Superconformal Field Theories in 4d

We explore the space of renormalization group flows that originate from $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ gauge theory with one adjoint and a pair of fundamental chiral multiplets. By considering all possible relevant deformations - including coupling to gauge-singlet chiral multiplets - we find 34 fixed points in this simple setup. We observe that theories in this class exhibit many novel phenomena: emergent symmetry, decoupling of operators, and narrow distribution of central charges $a/c$. This set of theories includes two of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal Argyres-Douglas theories and their mass deformed versions. In addition, we find 36 candidate fixed point theories possessing unphysical fermionic operators -including one with central charges $(a, c)\simeq (0.20, 0.22)$ that are smaller than any known superconformal theory -that need further investigation.

Modular Constraints on Superconformal Field Theories

We constrain the spectrum of $\mathcal{N}=(1, 1)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(2, 2)$ superconformal field theories in two-dimensions by requiring the NS-NS sector partition function to be invariant under the $Γ_θ$ congruence subgroup of the full modular group $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$. We employ semi-definite programming to find constraints on the allowed spectrum of operators with or without $U(1)$ charges. Especially, the upper bounds on the twist gap for the non-current primaries exhibit interesting peaks, kinks, and plateau. We identify a number of candidate rational (S)CFTs realized at the numerical boundaries and find that they are realized as the solutions to modular differential equations associated to $Γ_θ$. Some of the candidate theories have been discussed by Höhn in the context of self-dual extremal vertex operator (super)algebra. We also obtain bounds for the charged operators and study their implications to the weak gravity conjecture in AdS$_3$.

Modular Constraints on Conformal Field Theories with Currents

We study constraints coming from the modular invariance of the partition function of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We constrain the spectrum of CFTs in the presence of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents using the semi-definite programming. In particular, we find the bounds on the twist gap for the non-current primaries depend dramatically on the presence of holomorphic currents, showing numerous kinks and peaks. Various rational CFTs are realized at the numerical boundary of the twist gap, saturating the upper limits on the degeneracies. Such theories include Wess-Zumino-Witten models for the Deligne's exceptional series, the Monster CFT and the Baby Monster CFT. We also study modular constraints imposed by $\mathcal{W}$-algebras of various type and observe that the bounds on the gap depend on the choice of $\mathcal{W}$-algebra in the small central charge region.

Four-dimensional Lens Space Index from Two-dimensional Chiral Algebra

We study the supersymmetric partition function on $S^1 \times L(r, 1)$, or the lens space index of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories and their connection to two-dimensional chiral algebras. We primarily focus on free theories as well as Argyres-Douglas theories of type $(A_1, A_k)$ and $(A_1, D_k)$. We observe that in specific limits, the lens space index is reproduced in terms of the (refined) character of an appropriately twisted module of the associated two-dimensional chiral algebra or a generalized vertex operator algebra. The particular twisted module is determined by the choice of discrete holonomies for the flavor symmetry in four-dimensions.

A "Lagrangian" for the E7 Superconformal Theory

We find an N=1 gauge theory that flows to the rank-one N=2 superconformal field theory with $E_7$ flavor symmetry. We first obtain a Lagrangian description for the $R_{0, N}$ theory, which appears in the S-dual description of the SU(N) gauge theory with 2N fundamental hypermultiplets. This is a straightforward generalization of the proposed Lagrangian description for the $E_6$ theory. The $E_7$ theory is then obtained via partial Higgsing of the $R_{0, 4}$ theory. From this Lagrangian description, we compute the full superconformal index. We also consider twisted dimensional reduction on $S^2$ to obtain N=(0, 4) theory for the $E_7$ one instanton string and compute its elliptic genus.

Vertex operator algebras of Argyres-Douglas theories from M5-branes

We study aspects of the vertex operator algebra (VOA) corresponding to Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories engineered using the 6d N=(2, 0) theory of type $J$ on a punctured sphere. We denote the AD theories as $(J^b[k],Y)$, where $J^b[k]$ and $Y$ represent an irregular and a regular singularity respectively. We restrict to the `minimal' case where $J^b[k]$ has no associated mass parameters, and the theory does not admit any exactly marginal deformations. The VOA corresponding to the AD theory is conjectured to be the W-algebra $\mathcal{W}^{k_{2d}}(J,Y)$, where $k_{2d}=-h+ \frac{b}{b+k}$ with $h$ being the dual Coxeter number of $J$. We verify this conjecture by showing that the Schur index of the AD theory is identical to the vacuum character of the corresponding VOA, and the Hall-Littlewood index computes the Hilbert series of the Higgs branch. We also find that the Schur and Hall-Littlewood index for the AD theory can be written in a simple closed form for $b=h$. We also test the conjecture that the associated variety of such VOA is identical to the Higgs branch. The M5-brane construction of these theories and the corresponding TQFT structure of the index play a crucial role in our computations.

N=1 Lagrangians for generalized Argyres-Douglas theories

We find $\mathcal{N}=1$ Lagrangian gauge theories that flow to generalized Argyres-Douglas theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry. We find that certain SU quiver gauge theories flow to generalized Argyres-Douglas theories of type $(A_{k-1}, A_{mk-1})$ and $(I_{m, k m}, S)$. We also find quiver gauge theories of SO/Sp gauge groups flowing to the $(A_{2m-1}, D_{2mk+1})$, $(A_{2m}, D_{2m(k-1)+k})$ and $D_{m(2k+2)}^{m(2k+2)}[m]$ theories.

Macdonald Index and Chiral Algebra

For any 4d N=2 SCFT, there is a subsector described by a 2d chiral algebra. The vacuum character of the chiral algebra reproduces the Schur index of the corresponding 4d theory. The Macdonald index counts the same set of operators as the Schur index, but the former has one more fugacity than the latter. We conjecture a prescription to obtain the Macdonald index from the chiral algebra. The vacuum module admits a filtration, from which we construct an associated graded vector space. From this grading, we conjecture a notion of refined character for the vacuum module of a chiral algebra, which reproduces the Macdonald index. We test this prescription for the Argyres-Douglas theories of type $(A_1, A_{2n})$ and $(A_1, D_{2n+1})$ where the chiral algebras are given by Virasoro and su(2) affine Kac-Moody algebra. When the chiral algebra has more than one family of generators, our prescription requires a knowledge of the generators from the 4d.
