An ergodic theorem for permanents of oblong matrices

We form a sequence of oblong matrices by evaluating an integrable vector-valued function along the orbit of an ergodic dynamical system. We obtain an almost sure asymptotic result for the permanents of those matrices. We also give an application to symmetric means.

A criterion for zero averages and full support of ergodic measures

Consider a homeomorphism $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ and a continuous map $ϕ\colon X \to \mathbb{R}$. We provide an abstract criterion, called \emph{control at any scale with a long sparse tail} for a point $x\in X$ and the map $ϕ$, that guarantees that any weak$\ast$ limit measure $μ$ of the Birkhoff average of Dirac measures $\frac1n\sum_0^{n-1}δ(f^i(x))$ is such that $μ$-almost every point $y$ has a dense orbit in $X$ and the Birkhoff average of $ϕ$ along the orbit of $y$ is zero. As an illustration of the strength of this criterion, we prove that the diffeomorphisms with nonhyperbolic ergodic measures form a $C^1$-open and dense subset of the set of robustly transitive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one dimensional nonhyperbolic central direction. We also obtain applications for nonhyperbolic homoclinic classes.

The entropy of Lyapunov-optimizing measures of some matrix cocycles

We consider one-step cocycles of $2 \times 2$ matrices, and we are interested in their Lyapunov-optimizing measures, i.e., invariant probability measures that maximize or minimize a Lyapunov exponent. If the cocycle is dominated, that is, the two Lyapunov exponents are uniformly separated along all orbits, then Lyapunov-optimizing measures always exist, and are characterized by their support. Under an additional hypothesis of nonoverlapping between the cones that characterize domination, we prove that the Lyapunov-optimizing measures have zero entropy. This conclusion certainly fails without the domination assumption, even for typical one-step $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycles; indeed we show that in the latter case there are measures of positive entropy with zero Lyapunov exponent.

Ergodic optimization of prevalent super-continuous functions

Given a dynamical system, we say that a performance function has property P if its time averages along orbits are maximized at a periodic orbit. It is conjectured by several authors that for sufficiently hyperbolic dynamical systems, property P should be typical among sufficiently regular performance functions. In this paper we address this problem using a probabilistic notion of typicality that is suitable to infinite dimension: the concept of prevalence as introduced by Hunt, Sauer, and Yorke. For the one-sided shift on two symbols, we prove that property P is prevalent in spaces of functions with a strong modulus of regularity. Our proof uses Haar wavelets to approximate the ergodic optimization problem by a finite-dimensional one, which can be conveniently restated as a maximum cycle mean problem on a de Bruijin graph.

Robust criterion for the existence of nonhyperbolic ergodic measures

We give explicit $C^1$-open conditions that ensure that a diffeomorphism possesses a nonhyperbolic ergodic measure with positive entropy. Actually, our criterion provides the existence of a partially hyperbolic compact set with one-dimensional center and positive topological entropy on which the center Lyapunov exponent vanishes uniformly. The conditions of the criterion are met on a $C^1$-dense and open subset of the set of a diffeomorphisms having a robust cycle. As a corollary, there exists a $C^1$-open and dense subset of the set of non-Anosov robustly transitive diffeomorphisms consisting of systems with nonhyperbolic ergodic measures with positive entropy. The criterion is based on a notion of a blender defined dynamically in terms of strict invariance of a family of discs.

The Scaling Mean and a Law of Large Permanents

In this paper we study two types of means of the entries of a nonnegative matrix: the \emph{permanental mean}, which is defined using permanents, and the \emph{scaling mean}, which is defined in terms of an optimization problem. We explore relations between these two means, making use of important results by Ergorychev and Falikman (the van~der~Waerden conjecture), Friedland, Sinkhorn, and others. We also define a scaling mean for functions in a much more general context. Our main result is a Law of Large Permanents, a pointwise ergodic theorem for permanental means of dynamically defined matrices that expresses the limit as a functional scaling mean. The concepts introduced in this paper are general enough so to include as particular cases certain classical types of means, as for example symmetric means and Muirhead means. As a corollary, we reobtain a formula of Halász and Székely for the limit of the symmetric means of a stationary random process.

Cocycles of isometries and denseness of domination

We consider the problem of approximating a linear cocycle (or, more generally, a vector bundle automorphism) over a fixed base dynamics by another cocycle admitting a dominated splitting. We prove that the possibility of doing so depends only on the homotopy class of the cocycle, provided that the base dynamics is a minimal diffeomorphism and the fiber dimension is least 3. This result is obtained by means of a general theorem on the existence of almost invariant sections for fiberwise isometries of bundles with compact fibers and finite fundamental group. The main novelty of the proofs is the use of a quantitative homotopy result due to Calder, Siegel, and Williams.

Peano curves with smooth footprints

We construct Peano curves $γ: [0,\infty) \to \mathbb{R}^2$ whose "footprints" $γ([0,t])$, $t>0$, have $C^\infty$ boundaries and are tangent to a common continuous line field on the punctured plane $\mathbb{R}^2 \setminus \{γ(0)\}$. Moreover, these boundaries can be taken $C^\infty$-close to any prescribed smooth family of nested smooth Jordan curves contracting to a point.

Continuity properties of the lower spectral radius

The lower spectral radius, or joint spectral subradius, of a set of real $d \times d$ matrices is defined to be the smallest possible exponential growth rate of long products of matrices drawn from that set. The lower spectral radius arises naturally in connection with a number of topics including combinatorics on words, the stability of linear inclusions in control theory, and the study of random Cantor sets. In this article we apply some ideas originating in the study of dominated splittings of linear cocycles over a dynamical system to characterise the points of continuity of the lower spectral radius on the set of all compact sets of invertible $d \times d$ matrices. As an application we exhibit open sets of pairs of $2 \times 2$ matrices within which the analogue of the Lagarias-Wang finiteness property for the lower spectral radius fails on a residual set, and discuss some implications of this result for the computation of the lower spectral radius.

Universal regular control for generic semilinear systems

We consider discrete-time projective semilinear control systems $ξ_{t+1} = A(u_t) \cdot ξ_t$, where the states $ξ_t$ are in projective space $\mathbb{R}P^{d-1}$, inputs $u_t$ are in a manifold $U$ of arbitrary finite dimension, and $A \colon U \to GL(d,\mathbb{R})$ is a differentiable mapping. An input sequence $(u_0,\ldots,u_{N-1})$ is called universally regular if for any initial state $ξ_0 \in \mathbb{R}P^{d-1}$, the derivative of the time-$N$ state with respect to the inputs is onto. In this paper we deal with the universal regularity of constant input sequences $(u_0, \dots, u_0)$. Our main result states that generically in the space of such systems, for sufficiently large $N$, all constant inputs of length $N$ are universally regular, with the exception of a discrete set. More precisely, the conclusion holds for a $C^2$-open and $C^\infty$-dense set of maps $A$, and $N$ only depends on $d$ and on the dimension of $U$. We also show that the inputs on that discrete set are nearly universally regular; indeed there is a unique non-regular initial state, and its corank is $1$. In order to establish the result, we study the spaces of bilinear control systems. We show that the codimension of the set of systems for which the zero input is not universally regular coincides with the dimension of the control space. The proof is based on careful matrix analysis and some elementary algebraic geometry. Then the main result follows by applying standard transversality theorems.

Almost reduction and perturbation of matrix cocycles

In this note, we show that if all Lyapunov exponents of a matrix cocycle vanish, then it can be perturbed to become cohomologous to a cocycle taking values in the orthogonal group. This extends a result of Avila, Bochi and Damanik to general base dynamics and arbitrary dimension. We actually prove a fibered version of this result, and apply it to study the existence of dominated splittings into conformal subbundles of general matrix cocycles.

Robust vanishing of all Lyapunov exponents for iterated function systems

Given any compact connected manifold $M$, we describe $C^2$-open sets of iterated functions systems (IFS's) admitting fully-supported ergodic measures whose Lyapunov exponents along $M$ are all zero. Moreover, these measures are approximated by measures supported on periodic orbits. We also describe $C^1$-open sets of IFS's admitting ergodic measures of positive entropy whose Lyapunov exponents along $M$ are all zero. The proofs involve the construction of non-hyperbolic measures for the induced IFS's on the flag manifold.

A geometric path from zero Lyapunov exponents to rotation cocycles

We consider cocycles of isometries on spaces of nonpositive curvature $H$. We show that the supremum of the drift over all invariant ergodic probability measures equals the infimum of the displacements of continuous sections under the cocycle dynamics. In particular, if a cocycle has uniform sublinear drift, then there are almost invariant sections, that is, sections that move arbitrarily little under the cocycle dynamics. If, in addition, $H$ is a symmetric space, then we show that almost invariant sections can be made invariant by perturbing the cocycle.

Generic linear cocycles over a minimal base

We prove that a generic linear cocycle over a minimal base dynamics of finite dimension has the property that the Oseledets splitting with respect to any invariant probability coincides almost everywhere with the finest dominated splitting. Therefore the restriction of the generic cocycle to a subbundle of the finest dominated splitting is uniformly subexponentially quasiconformal. This extends a previous result for SL(2,R)-cocycles due to Avila and the author.

Note on the dimension of certain algebraic sets of matrices

In this short note we prove a lemma about the dimension of certain algebraic sets of matrices. This result is needed in our paper arXiv:1201.1672. The result presented here has also applications in other situations and so it should appear as part of a larger work. The statement of the lemma goes as follows: Suppose $X$ is a nonempty algebraically closed subset of the affine space of $n \times m$ complex matrices. Suppose that $X$ is column-invariant (i.e., belongingness to $X$ depends only on the column space of the matrix). Suppose $E$ is a vector subspace of $\mathbb{C}^n$ that is not contained in the column space of any matrix in $X$. Then $codim(X) \geq m + 1 - dim(E)$. The proof is simple and relies on intersection theory of the grassmannians ("Schubert calculus").

Perturbation of the Lyapunov spectra of periodic orbits

We describe all Lyapunov spectra that can be obtained by perturbing the derivatives along periodic orbits of a diffeomorphism. The description is expressed in terms of the finest dominated splitting and Lyapunov exponents that appear in the limit of a sequence of periodic orbits, and involves the majorization partial order. Among the applications, we give a simple criterion for the occurrence of universal dynamics.

Nonuniform Hyperbolicity, Global Dominated Splittings and Generic Properties of Volume-Preserving Diffeomorphisms

We study generic volume-preserving diffeomorphisms on compact manifolds. We show that the following property holds generically in the $C^1$ topology: Either there is at least one zero Lyapunov exponent at almost every point, or the set of points with only non-zero exponents forms an ergodic component. Moreover, if this nonuniformly hyperbolic component has positive measure then it is essentially dense in the manifold (that is, it has a positive measure intersection with any nonempty open set) and there is a global dominated splitting. For the proof we establish some new properties of independent interest that hold $C^r$-generically for any $r \geq 1$, namely: the continuity of the ergodic decomposition, the persistence of invariant sets, and the $L^1$-continuity of Lyapunov exponents.

Nonuniform Center Bunching and the Genericity of Ergodicity among $C^1$ Partially Hyperbolic Symplectomorphisms

We introduce the notion of nonuniform center bunching for partially hyperbolic diffeomorphims, and extend previous results by Burns--Wilkinson and Avila--Santamaria--Viana. Combining this new technique with other constructions, we prove that $C^1$-generic partially hyperbolic symplectomorphisms are ergodic. We also construct new examples of stably ergodic partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms.
