Opening Gaps in the Spectrum of Strictly Ergodic Schrödinger Operators

We consider Schrödinger operators with dynamically defined potentials arising from continuous sampling along orbits of strictly ergodic transformations. The Gap Labeling Theorem states that the possible gaps in the spectrum can be canonically labelled by an at most countable set defined purely in terms of the dynamics. Which labels actually appear depends on the choice of the sampling function; the missing labels are said to correspond to collapsed gaps. Here we show that for any collapsed gap, the sampling function may be continuously deformed so that the gap immediately opens. As a corollary, we conclude that for generic sampling functions, all gaps are open. The proof is based on the analysis of continuous $SL(2,R)$ cocycles, for which we obtain dynamical results of independent interest.

$C^1$-Generic Symplectic Diffeomorphisms: Partial Hyperbolicity and Zero Center Lyapunov Exponents

We prove that if $f$ is a $C^1$-generic symplectic diffeomorphism then the Oseledets splitting along almost every orbit is either trivial or partially hyperbolic. In addition, if $f$ is not Anosov then all the exponents in the center bundle vanish. This establishes in full a result announced by R. Mañé in the ICM 1983. The main technical novelty is a probabilistic method for the construction of perturbations, using random walks.

Uniformly Hyperbolic Finite-Valued SL(2,R)-Cocycles

We consider finite families of SL(2,R) matrices whose products display uniform exponential growth. These form open subsets of (SL(2,R))^N, and we study their components, boundary, and complement. We also consider the more general situation where the allowed products of matrices satisfy a Markovian rule.

Cantor Spectrum for Schrödinger Operators with Potentials arising from Generalized Skew-shifts

We consider continuous $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycles over a strictly ergodic homeomorphism which fibers over an almost periodic dynamical system (generalized skew-shifts). We prove that any cocycle which is not uniformly hyperbolic can be approximated by one which is conjugate to an $SO(2,\mathbb{R})$-cocycle. Using this, we show that if a cocycle's homotopy class does not display a certain obstruction to uniform hyperbolicity, then it can be $C^0$-perturbed to become uniformly hyperbolic. For cocycles arising from Schrödinger operators, the obstruction vanishes and we conclude that uniform hyperbolicity is dense, which implies that for a generic continuous potential, the spectrum of the corresponding Schrödinger operator is a Cantor set.

A generic $C^1$ map has no absolutely continuous invariant probability measure

Let $M$ be a smooth compact manifold (maybe with boundary, maybe disconnected) of any dimension $d \ge 1$. We consider the set of $C^1$ maps $f:M\to M$ which have no absolutely continuous (with respect to Lebesgue) invariant probability measure. We show that this is a residual (dense $G_δ) set in the $C^1$ topology. In the course of the proof, we need a generalization of the usual Rokhlin tower lemma to non-invariant measures. That result may be of independent interest.

Dichotomies between uniform hyperbolicity and zero Lyapunov exponents for SL(2,R) cocycles

We consider the linear cocycle $(T,A)$ induced by a measure preserving dynamical system $T:X \to X$ and a map $A:X \to \mathit{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We address the dependence of the upper Lyapunov exponent of $(T,A)$ on the dynamics $T$ when the map $A$ is kept fixed. We introduce explicit conditions on the cocycle that allow to perturb the dynamics, in the weak and uniform topologies, to make the exponent drop arbitrarily close to zero. In the weak topology we deduce that if $X$ is a compact connected manifold, then for a $C^r$ ($r \ge 1$) open and dense set of maps $A$, either $(T,A)$ is uniformly hyperbolic for every $T$, or the Lyapunov exponents of $(T,A)$ vanish for the generic measurable $T$. For the continuous case, we obtain that if $X$ is of dimension greater than 2, then for a $C^r$ ($r \ge 1$) generic map $A$, there is a residual set of volume-preserving homeomorphisms $T$ for which either $(T,A)$ is uniformly hyperbolic or the Lyapunov exponents of $(T,A)$ vanish.

Robust transitivity and topological mixing for $C^1$-flows

We prove that non-trivial homoclinic classes of $C^r$-generic flows are topologically mixing. This implies that given $Λ$ a non-trivial $C^1$-robustly transitive set of a vector field $X$, there is a $C^1$-perturbation $Y$ of $X$ such that the continuation $Λ_Y$ of $Λ$ is a topologically mixing set for $Y$. In particular, robustly transitive flows become topologically mixing after $C^1$-perturbations. These results generalize a theorem by Bowen on the basic sets of generic Axiom A flows. We also show that the set of flows whose non-trivial homoclinic classes are topologically mixing is \emph{not} open and dense, in general.

$L^p$-generic cocycles have one-point Lyapunov spectrum

We show the sum of the first $k$ Lyapunov exponents of linear cocycles is an upper semicontinuous function in the $L^p$ topologies, for any $1 \le p \le \infty$ and $k$. This fact, together with a result from Arnold and Cong, implies that the Lyapunov exponents of the $L^p$-generic cocycle, $p<\infty$, are all equal.

Inequalities for numerical invariants of sets of matrices

We prove three inequalities relating some invariants of sets of matrices, such as the joint spectral radius. One of the inequalities, in which proof we use geometric invariant theory, has the generalized spectral radius theorem of Berger and Wang as an immediate corollary.

The Lyapunov exponents of generic volume preserving and symplectic systems

We show that the integrated Lyapunov exponents of $C^1$ volume preserving diffeomorphisms are simultaneously continuous at a given diffeomorphism only if the corresponding Oseledets splitting is trivial (all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero) or else dominated (uniform hyperbolicity in the projective bundle) almost everywhere. We deduce a sharp dichotomy for generic volume preserving diffeomorphisms on any compact manifold: almost every orbit either is projectively hyperbolic or has all Lyapunov exponents equal to zero. Similarly, for a residual subset of all $C^1$ symplectic diffeomorphisms on any compact manifold, either the diffeomorphism is Anosov or almost every point has zero as a Lyapunov exponent, with multiplicity at least 2. Finally, given any closed group $G \subset GL(d,\mathrm{R})$ that acts transitively on the projective space, for a residual subset of all continuous $G$-valued cocycles over any measure preserving homeomorphism of a compact space, the Oseledets splitting is either dominated or trivial.

Genericity of zero Lyapunov exponents

We show that, for any compact surface, there is a residual (dense $G_δ$) set of $C^1$ area preserving diffeomorphisms which either are Anosov or have zero Lyapunov exponents a.e. This result was announced by R. Mane, but no proof was available. We also show that for any fixed ergodic dynamical system over a compact space, there is a residual set of continuous $SL(2,R)$-cocycles which either are uniformly hyperbolic or have zero exponents a.e.

A formula with some applications to the theory of Lyapunov exponents

We prove an elementary formula about the average expansion of certain products of 2 by 2 matrices. This permits us to quickly re-obtain an inequality by M. Herman and a theorem by Dedieu and Shub, both concerning Lyapunov exponents. Indeed, we show that equality holds in Herman's result. Finally, we give a result about the growth of the spectral radius of products.
