Searches for Particle Dark Matter with the GLAST Large Area Telescope

The Large Area Telescope (LAT), one of two instruments on the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) mission, scheduled for launch by NASA in 2007, is an imaging, wide field-of-view, high-energy gamma-ray telescope, covering the approximate energy range from 20 MeV to more than 300 GeV. Annihilation of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP), predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model of Particle Physics, may give rise to a signal in gamma-ray spectra from many cosmic sources. In this contribution we give an overview of the searches for WIMP Dark Matter performed by the GLAST-LAT collaboration.

Discovery and Upper Limits in Search for Exotic Physics with Neutrino Telescopes

This note gives a short review of the statistical issues concerning upper limit calculation and claiming of discovery arising in the search for exotic physics with neutrino telescopes. Low sample sizes and significant instrumental uncertainties require special consideration. Methods for treating instrumental or theoretical uncertainties in the calculation of limits or discovery are described. Software implementing these methods is presented. The issue of optimization of analysis cuts and definition of sensitivity is briefly discussed.

Fluctuation studies and energy reconstruction in a segmented calorimeter

In order to better understand energy estimation of electromagnetic showers in segmented calorimeters, detailed Geant4 simulation studies of electromagnetic showers in the energy range 1--100 GeV in CsI have been performed. When sampled in layers of 1.99 cm thickness, corresponding to 1.08 radiation lengths, the energy fluctuations in the samples show distributions that vary significantly with depth. The energy distributions are similar for incident electrons and photons and were found to change systematically along the shower, varying little with the initial energy. Three probability distributions have been fitted to the data: negative binomial, log-normal and Gaussian distributions, none of which gives a good fit over the full shower length. The obtained parameterizations might be useful in the use of the maximum likelihood method for estimating the energy. Two methods for estimating the energy have also been studied. One method is based on fitting individual longitudinal shower profiles with a $Γ$-function, the other one corrects the measured energy for leakage by utilizing the energy deposited in the last layer. Our simulations indicate that the last-layer correction method applied to photons and electrons of 1 and 10 GeV gives about a factor of 2 improvement in the energy resolution.

Beam Test Performance and Simulation of Prototypes for the ALICE Silicon Pixel Detector

The silicon pixel detector (SPD) of the ALICE experiment in preparation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is designed to provide the precise vertex reconstruction needed for measuring heavy flavor production in heavy ion collisions at very high energies and high multiplicity. The SPD forms the innermost part of the Inner Tracking System (ITS) which also includes silicon drift and silicon strip detectors. Single assembly prototypes of the ALICE SPD have been tested at the CERN SPS using high energy proton/pion beams in 2002 and 2003. We report on the experimental determination of the spatial precision. We also report on the first combined beam test with prototypes of the other ITS silicon detector technologies at the CERN SPS in November 2004. The issue of SPD simulation is briefly discussed.

Likelihood ratio intervals with Bayesian treatment of uncertainties: coverage, power and combined experiments

In this note we present studies of coverage and power for confidence intervals for a Poisson process with known background calculated using the Likelihood ratio (aka Feldman & Cousins) ordering with Bayesian treatment of uncertainties in nuisance parameters. We consider both the variant where the Bayesian integration is done in both the numerator and the denominator and the modification where the integration is done only in the numerator whereas in the denominator the likelihood is taken at the maximum likelihood estimate of the parameters. Furthermore we discuss how measurements can be combined in this framework and give an illustration with limits on the branching ratio of a rare B-meson decay recently presented by CDF/D0. A set of C++ classes has been developed which can be used to calculate confidence intervals for single or combining multiple experiments using the above algorithms and considering a variety of parameterizations to describe the uncertainties.

On Bayesian Treatment of Systematic Uncertainties in Confidence Interval Calculation

In high energy physics, a widely used method to treat systematic uncertainties in confidence interval calculations is based on combining a frequentist construction of confidence belts with a Bayesian treatment of systematic uncertainties. In this note we present a study of the coverage of this method for the standard Likelihood Ratio (aka Feldman & Cousins) construction for a Poisson process with known background and Gaussian or log-Normal distributed uncertainties in the background or signal efficiency. For uncertainties in the signal efficiency of upto 40 % we find over-coverage on the level of 2 to 4 % depending on the size of uncertainties and the region in signal space. Uncertainties in the background generally have smaller effect on the coverage. A considerable smoothing of the coverage curves is observed. A software package is presented which allows fast calculation of the confidence intervals for a variety of assumptions on shape and size of systematic uncertainties for different nuisance parameters. The calculation speed allows experimenters to test the coverage for their specific conditions.
